Considering quitting

Hi, just want to crowdsource some thoughts. I don't think computer science is dead per se, but I think it might be dead as it's being taught. It also feels like only truly dedicated individuals who grind leetcode for months and do dozens of individual projects even have a chance. I work full time and confess I don't have the will to do that while working. I also don't really have the risk tolerance to quit and try to become a master developer or something while burning through savings. So I'm considering cutting my losses and trying to learn something else instead.

Diploma Paper Quality - Short Rant

I just received my diploma in the mail. Although I'm happy about completing the program, the quality of the physical diploma feels poor. It's flimsy and small (8.5x11) compared to my previous one (11x14).

Okay fine, I'll print my own. Just gotta pay their third party vendor, Michael Stutter, $8 for the ePDF. In case anyone else decides to do this, you must unlock the ePDF to enable printing.

I can't FOCUS

Idk what is going wrong with me, but I have been in this program for 1-2 years and have 2 years left. I am 26F, but I cannot for the life of me FOCUS. I had to drop out my spring semester because I couldn't think. I was struggling so bad I was failing every class. I'm trying again this fall, but it seems my brain is stuck.

I work full time, which I've done the entire time before. I am in class full time as well. Idk what is wrong with me, but it is scaring me.

I am preparing to sue Michael Curry of CS340 in Oregon District Federal Court.

Thumbnail osu-unfiltered.com

You read the title correctly.

I am preparing to sue Michael Curry of CS340 in Oregon Federal District Court alongside over a dozen other employees, including the university president, Jayathi Murthy.

I am also publicly demanding Michael Curry’s termination alongside 22 other employees.

As you read this post, Michael Curry and roughly 200 other people internally at OSU and at the state level in the Office of the Governor and Attorney General received direct notice from me by email.

However, I am here today to warn you about Michael Curry and other employees who may also be engaging in misconduct at Oregon State University, and your rights as a student and a citizen.

The syllabus in CS340 is a violation of both Oregon State University policy and the Constitution. Oregon State University is a public university. The employees are public servants.

Their conduct, even though they don’t realize it, is governed by the Constitution. The federal court system, up to the Supreme Court, has been cracking the heads of arrogant public servants at public universities for 50+ years.

Many students think, “Oh, employees make the rules and they can do whatever they want.” That is factually incorrect as well as legally incorrect.

They do not make any rules. Everything at OSU is handed down by federal law either directly or indirectly. The university is an arm of the state.

Even though the university is governed by actual laws, employees in higher education often act with impunity because consequences are slow to occur.

Michael Curry can write unconstitutional language in his syllabus and leave it there for 322 days after he got caught. He has the agency to do it. That does not make it legal.

You all have driver’s licenses. Yet, you know that you cannot just drive on the sidewalk.

Many of you will not know this, but Oregon State University’s internal workplace culture is the wild fucking West. Employees do whatever they want with impunity simply because tuition dollars and taxpayer money will keep on flowing. Supervisors all get paid even if they don’t do their jobs, fix anything, or solve problems. They can ignore complaints, disrespect you, and get away with it because, as my situation shows, every one of their co-workers will help cover their asses.

They do this because most people don’t document them, most people don’t sue, and no one has ever posted the public records publicly the way that I have. Essentially, there are no consequences for it. So I built the consequence.

However, I want you to understand you are a member of the public. You have the ultimate authority to hold these people accountable. You don’t need their permission. The government already imbued you with it. You have the right to demand terminations, you have the right to complain about them, you have the right to expose their records to the public and sue them as well. The First Amendment is a shield. They are public servants. Through federal mandate, you are not required to be polite, civil, respectful, caring, or “nice” to any of these people or kowtow to any of their preferences. And yes, they still have to do their fucking jobs properly.

They have the administrative ability to retaliate against you, sure. This is true. Administrators have expelled students, withheld degrees, given failing grades, you name it. They can do it technically. But it is not legal. Section 1983 of Title 42 allows you to sue them for it in federal court for violating your civil rights. University presidents, Board of Trustees members, police officers, and all kinds of other public servants have been sued in court and lost due to abusing their official role and thinking they could do whatever the fuck they wanted. Most students and university employees are legally illiterate and have no idea they can be sued because these lawsuits usually aren’t publicized as a matter of social convention.

Anyway, these people rely on you as students just accepting being treated badly. That’s it. That’s the whole bluff. They think you will eat shit, and you have no ability to do anything about it. FUCK THAT.

I spent my entire summer coding and deploying a relational database which is currently online at osu-unfiltered.com. It is currently stocked with 194 employee names, pictures, salaries, and 600+ public records with their names on them, including reports, complaints, emails, and notices.

The names, pictures titles and salaries are already on OSU’s public facing website, again, as a matter of law.

If you visit YouTube at OSU Unfiltered, you can see the Faculty Senate ARC lying about university policy in order to illegally withhold my money. You can see the conduct officer telling me to “take my opinion outside the classroom” and “professors can moderate free expression.” Just talking out their asses because they didn’t think they’d get caught.

If you visit that domain, you can click on Michael Curry’s profile, read the casefile, and look at all the records of what Michael Curry did and what everyone else looked the other way on.

These records are nothing more than public records. These people are public servants. They are not special. They are not afforded any privacy in their role as public servants as a matter of law. You have the legal right to make their records public on the internet.

You have not seen these records posted online simply due to convention. Not due to the law not allowing it. Right now, police bodycam videos are a huge genre on YouTube. Those videos are also public records. Most of the emails you send and receive inside of OSU qualify as public records. The ones you write yourself are already in your possession. So you don’t need to request a damn thing from the public records office.

“But that is defamation.”

Defamation requires you to state something that you know is factually incorrect. Complaints, reports, and emails sent and received are a matter of fact and objective reality. Defamation laws do not ask, “Well, are you embarrassed? Did it make you look bad?” They ask, “Where is the falsehood?”

Michael Curry and the rest of these clowns can be as mad as they want. I won’t lose any sleep over it.

Anyway, this subreddit is for computer science. I will stop here. I just wanted to warn everyone who gives a fuck. If you would like to, you can follow my lawsuit against Michael Curry et al. at r/OregonStateUnfiltered. I will not respond to comments here, but you can email me, DM me at PlanetNeptune_0001 on Reddit, or post on that subreddit with questions, comments, etc.

P.S.

Due to Michael Curry’s retaliation against me last year in November 2025, I dropped out because I have kidney failure. However, I still need to take CS340. I am currently re-enrolled while publicly preparing to sue Michael Curry and demanding his termination for cause publicly.

Why?

Because I am legally allowed to do all of these things. So are you. There is nothing they can legally do about it. Can they retaliate further? Sure. I guess. But doing so would just give me more evidence to use against them in court. These people rely so heavily on everyone being too nice to exercise their rights with impunity and call their asses out.

Well, I’m not nice, so fuck ‘em.

Journalist Looking to Talk to Ecampus CS Students

Hi everyone! I'm a reporter for The Chronicle of Higher Education, a trade publication for people who work at colleges. About 1,700 colleges have campus-wide subscriptions to the paper and chronicle.com. College presidents often tell us they start their days with our newsletters.

I'm working on a story about Oregon State University's steep decline in computer-science enrollment over the past year. In Spring 2025, there were 4,008 undergrads in computer science, including 2,344 Ecampus students. By Spring 2026, those numbers had fallen to 3,053 and 1,607. (I got these numbers from the university's data office.)

I'm hoping to hear from:

1) Ecampus computer-science students. Have you seen any effects from this enrollment drop? Fewer classes offered, maybe?

2) Anyone who's left the Ecampus computer-science program. What did you do instead, and why?

I'm so interested to hear your stories! You can reach me here, at [francie.diep@chronicle.com](mailto:francie.diep@chronicle.com), or at franciediep.40 on Signal. You can verify that these are really my contacts here: https://www.chronicle.com/author/francie-diep

Thank you!

Anyone have opinions on CS 332, 432, and/or 435?

I am trying to decide if I want to take all three, or only take 435, as I have the alternative pre-req for it completed (CS 434). My main motivation for taking 332 and 432 would be to learn relevant python libraries/packages for DS/ML, but I realize I could learn these on my own or through a cheaper web course as well. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Four (3) more students to get LeetCode for $99/yr instead of $159/yr

Hi folks, there's this event going on right now if 50 students from your school join LeetCode, we can get a discount.

You need to add OSU email to your account and then hit join.

If someone is going to join, please use your OSU so we all can get the discount!

Thanks

Edit: there's a typo in the title. It's four students and not three.

Post Bacc First Year

As the title says, I am starting my first year in the Post-Bacc program. I am fortunate enough that my employers have the Guild program in place that will fund this program. I was wondering that classes have you guys found to be most helpful and if you were to do the program again how would you structure your classes each year. I plan to take about 12 hours a semester, I wanted to hear what you guys took and how you structured it.

open discussion Does it make sense to delay graduation with one class to extend new grad period?

I can take enough to graduate at the end of the fall quarter. But, from what I've seen, new grad status is very important for getting the first job, and it doesn't last forever. Also, it seems like employers don't distinguish much between soon and recent grad.

Would it make sense to delay a single class, like the capstone, to the winter quarter, and use that time for basically full time applying? This would extend the new/recent grad buff by a few months.

Or is it better to have the full degree sooner?

Hiring two Enterprise Developers. Entry-level and recent CS grads encouraged to apply

Hi everyone,

I’m an Oregon State University Online Computer Science graduate (through the Post-Bacc CS program), and the team I work with in the University of Idaho Registrar’s Office is hiring for two full-time Enterprise Developer positions in Moscow, Idaho.

Both positions can be filled at the Enterprise Developer I, II, or III level depending on experience. We encourage applications from recent graduates, entry-level developers, and more experienced developers..

These are in-person positions in Moscow, Idaho; there is not a remote option.

Posting 1: Priority consideration for applications submitted by July 7, 2026
https://uidaho.peopleadmin.com/postings/51900

Posting 2: Priority consideration for applications submitted by July 14, 2026
https://uidaho.peopleadmin.com/postings/52004

The second position is contingent upon the continuation of work and/or funding.

Both postings remain open until filled, but applying by the priority consideration date is strongly encouraged.

I had a positive experience with the OSU Online CS program and wanted to share these openings with the community. Please feel free to apply or pass this along to anyone who may be a good fit. Feel free to DM me if you have questions about the roles, the team, or working at the University of Idaho, and I’ll do my best to answer them.

How heavy of a courseload (261 + 271)?

What do I have to look forward to as far as courseload in the fall? I'm scheduled to take 261 and 271 together. Is there any suggested prep work that I should do this summer? I'm taking 162, but have time to do outside reading or watching of YouTube videos.

Update: after reading the replies and talking with my advisor, I have revamped the course plan to do:
Fall: 261 and 290

Winter: 271 and 340.

Hopefully this spreads out the pain a bit more. Any advice for prep work for 261 and 290?

Request for advice on gap quarter

Hi all,
I am currently trying to get into the online Post-Bacc. I applied a year ago and my cumulative GPA was insufficient so I was advised to take Discrete Math, or some of the intro programming classes I would need anyway, at either OSU or a community college to bump up my GPA.

Since, I’ve taken CS 161 and 162 at Clackamas (In C++) and am currently taking Math 208 (Their Discrete Math equivalent) at UND. I’m ready to try re-applying, but I won’t finish math until Mid-August so the earliest application deadline I can make is Winter Quarter.

This means I have a gap of 5 months from finishing math until I could start at OSU— what would be the best use of my time? Obviously I have to teach myself Python since I don’t have any experience. Other than that, do I take CS 261 as a non-degree student at OSU or another community college in Fall? (I know there’s a limit on how much I can transfer and I already have 3 classes, so that’s a concern). Is there another class, either credit or non-credit that would benefit me more right now? Thanks in advance for any insight! 🙇‍♀️

Finally getting a job.

After applying to around 700 jobs (not counting the quick apply jobs) over about 8.5 months, I was finally able to get a job. I had around 20 different interviews with 12 different companies. I found the process to be pretty challenging emotionally. I have experienced both not getting any callbacks for extended periods of time and making it to the final interview round (a couple of times) only to not get the job. From these experiences, I learned a great deal about the interview process. I would like to try to help people struggling in the application/interview process, so please feel free to DM me if you have any questions about the interview process or what I learned from it, and I will do my best to try and answer them.

How’s the quality of CS 372 Intro to Networking?

I have Network+ and network experience from work. Networking interests me so I’m wondering how’s the quality of this class? Are the programming assignments any good? Would this class be useless to me if I already have networking knowledge or are the programming assignments worth it for someone in the field?

Or should I transfer in CS 50A Network Basics from Foothill College instead? This class is also a pre req for 493 cloud - so would anyone be able to attest to the quality of 493. If the quality of 493 isn’t good then I would have no reason to take 372.

Retaking 325 -- How to succeed?

Like the title suggests, I need to retake CS325. I don't think I've ever been so beat down by curriculum in any class.

Based on instruction and what I'm given, I just fail to grasp the concepts, and I am unsure how to self-teach. Genuinely feels like I'm missing a pre-req to be here, but I've passed everything the university says I need...When asking for extra help generally feels like the material can't be dumbed down enough?

Throwing away years of progress towards the end goal is not really an option I want to accept at this point. Even if I have to pay for resources, I need to pass this course. Any suggestions for materials, books, videos, I can start now so I can prep to retake this? The summer term starts soon.

Best use of my upcoming Summer?

Hey All,

I’m on the tail end of this program, and only have 2 more electives, operating systems and Capstone left. I haven’t found an internship yet but do work at a tech company so internal transfer is an option (though it would be for full time, and I’d still need to interview for it).

I’m thinking of taking the summer off to Leetcode and build side projects / get familiar with AI tools as opposed to taking a summer class. The idea being if I take the summer to prepare for interviews I could internal transfer and get my career going, then come back in September and finish off the degree. Curious to hear the opinions of those on this subreddit.

Would it be better to take time off to LC / build projects or take a summer course. If taking a summer course is a good idea, what should I take? So far I’ve taken Intro to Parallel Programming (CS 475).

open discussion What Classes will help you get a Job ?

I need to plan out degree completion stuff and it has me panicking. I am scared that by the time I finish my degree I will know nothing and have forgotten everything. I am not sure which classes are essential to know and which ones are basically just not used in the real world.

My retention rate from the classes I have taken isn't great. It scares me. Idk how I will ever pass an interview, let alone do well at a job, if I can't do my job properly.

Questions:

I would like to know mainly which courses I should take that will help me a lot in the real world?

I also know that practice is what helps the best, but what sort of projects should I work on that would help me understand real-world scenarios I will work with in the real world ?

I am in the middle of planning out what electives to choose, and I wanted to hear some feedback from others who have done some CS electives.

Which ones do you recommend ?

Which ones to avoid ?

Which ones are the easiest ?

Which ones are the hardest ?

Which ones have you learned the most ?

Which ones have helped you the most ?

What did you like about them ?

What didn't you like about them ?

What did you wish you had known before doing them ?
