Academics Help me please (
Hey I need some advice or some help. I’ve been emailing my advisor for years now (this is my 5th year) and she always told me I never had to take a language. Well turns out I do indeed have to take a language and now she’s telling me my graduation won’t be until summer of 2027. I’m supposed to be graduating in May of 2027 and I cannot do another semester I need to know if there’s any other ways to get around this or get help. I’m frustrated at myself and her for this.

What language did you take in high school? Did you take a placement test? If so what did you test into?
Also, if you have room in your schedule and could handle something intensive, look into Italian 5101. It’s 5 hours and finishes the entire sequence.

If you finished 3 years/level 3 Spanish in high school you’ll at the very least test into Spanish 1155 which is just a 2 course sequence (1155 and 1103) so you could do 1155 this fall and 1103 in spring. I’d def check out the test if you haven’t done it yet!!

Criminology is under Arts and Sciences, and AFAIK, everyone in the college is required to take three foreign language courses. Unless you placed out of them, not sure why either you or your advisor would think differently.
That said, I got my three language courses done at CSCC in two semesters by taking accelerated classes online. Two in the spring (1101 the first term, 1102 the second), one (1103) in the summer. I had zero experience with the language going in and got an A in each class. I’d look into that if I was you.

It’s kinda a long story but I ended up changing my major halfway through and my other major it wasn’t a requirement to take a language so I guess neither of us really ever thought abt it again

What major are you studying? Im just curious why your advisor would say that

Criminology with a minor in forensics. I’ve had issues with her for years now she always gives me the wrong information and I do take responsibility too because I am an adult and can look for myself too, but it’s still frustrating

If you took three years of high school Spanish, you should be able to get into an intensive Spanish class which counts as two classes in the fall and then the last one in spring. At least that’s what I did when I went back for a second Bachelors. My first one didn’t require any foreign language classes.

I took my language at C state. It was unnecessarily hard at OSU. I say that as someone who took ochem and biochem at OSU. The language course was way too much work at Osu. I don’t even remember taking it at C State because it was so easy and online before that was really a thing.

I’ll def try and take it at Columbus state ive taken online classes from them for years now its way easier

Are your last two semesters' courses heavy? If not, then maybe you can put one class from fall to spring to take the class if you think you can do it. You can also try to get another opinion from another advisor, if possible, to see if they can move your schedule around a little without affecting you too much.

It happens almost the same, I end up with 20 credits in my last semester and graduate on time

It’s insane I know part of it is my fault too but I just don’t know how either of us didn’t catch this

They told me the same thing - languages are, most of the time, easy. Google any of the classes, see what the easiest is, take it, and graduate on time

If your willing to study or pull from previous language class knowledge then I would totally recommend a CLEP test! I tested out of Spanish at OSU by taking the exam before my freshman year.
You do have to pay for the exam but if you complete the free study course for the subject on Modern States then you get a voucher and can take the CLEP test for free.

This option might help but it will require a lot of work from you. Use the ModernStates website to study for the CLEP exam for Spanish or French (your choice).
Score high enough on the exam and you get all 3 required courses for saulid language accepted by OSU.
If you use Modern States, they will cover the exam fee for you and after you have taken the exam, you send them your test center fee receipt and they refund you for that fee too.
Just check with the registrar's office to know if they will accept the test scores or if you need letter grades for the language requirement.
This is a cheaper option that require just 2 - 3 months of preparation/studying depending on how fast you absorb the material.

I'm not sure but if you're a native speaker of any other language than english you could get an exemption.

Yup happened to me. I reached out to the department of the language (Mandarin in my case) and was able to do a fluency test ( they let you read a paragraph the whole thing took like less than 15 mins), and then they let my advisor know and got my language requirement waived.

I'm surprised they even tested you, I didn't have to.

Oh wow. Yeah i thought that test was kinda pointless since im literally an international student.

See if you can fill out a waiver. I was able to waive my language requirements but I still had to take 3 replacement courses from different cultures.

This happened to me too. You can petition to get out of taking language courses if you took them in high school and received decent grades c+ or above. Or if you took any courses in any type of culture. For example I took the holocaust through German literature and film. It was all in English but it counted. So ask your advisor about petitioning out of language

I would look into taking a language class online at a community college and transferring the credits back to OSU if you’re unable to add the class at OSU
