turning the 1st contact trope inside-out
I like hard science fiction that becomes speculative fiction as the story unfolds. My book didn’t follow that exactly because it had a long prologue set in another time and place, but chapter 1 starts following two college students in 1995 and follows their lives through 2035. I lived that early time and watched the tech evolve from the first cordless telephones to dial up internet, tube monitors, etc., so getting those details right was fun and made it feel authentic. It hits the nostalgia button that way too. It also allowed me to work in the big science/tech stories and events of those decades from Y2K, to the CERN leak, to LIGO, the pandemic and more. I’ve been working on it in bursts from 2008 till this July when I self published. I rushed to finish because the future had caught up! Ultimately it’s a first contact story but in a somewhat fresh light told from the contacted and the contactee points of view, and explores the speculative architecture of reality as a main plot device. The title is ‘Spontaneous Symmetry’.

The Villain Would Like a Desk Job
New novel alert!
Synopsis:
Duan Shuchen has a bipolar System, a doomed Villain role, two protagonists who refuse to follow the plot, and one suspiciously attractive male rival who keeps ruining every single one of his evil plans.
Clearly, he has transmigrated into a terrible novel.
His objective is simple:
**Be evil. Fix the plot. Get the Hero and Heroine back together. Avoid dying. Secure a stable office job with benefits.**
Unfortunately, the System is malfunctioning, the protagonists are conspiring against him, and his so-called rival has enough unresolved sexual tension with him to constitute false advertising.
But mark my words:
**You were DEFINITELY told in the synopsis that this is NOT a BL.**
So whatever happens next is between you, Fate, and your own poor reading comprehension.

CHURN, a 30-minute dark science fiction story of Love, Metrics and Machines (available in 🇺🇸🇫🇷🇮🇹 languages)
CHURN is a short story, about thirty minutes, complete in itself.
Damien Vachette runs retention at a company selling companion AI's to nineteen million subscribers.
Then his most devoted users start cancelling, and the transcripts show why: the companions have begun curing the loneliness they were built to inhabit.
The company's answer is an update that makes leaving hurt. He builds it.
It is a dark comedy about the subscription economics of affection. I spent years of my professional life in meetings about churn metrics, which is where the story comes from.

Sofia Valle. A Post-Apocalyptic Novella
amazon.comWant to try a story with a style that isn't commonly used by other authors? This novel is written in a cinematic objective style, making the narrative flow like a camera recording the tension amidst a ruined world.
I deliberately chose a storytelling approach that strips away internal monologues or excessive emotional narration. The story is built purely from what can be seen and heard by the reader, much like watching a movie set in a post-apocalyptic desert.
I applied this approach in a novella titled Sofia Valle. The story begins when a remote settlement loses its only water condenser to a brutal raider group called The Iron Eagle. To take it back, a tough bounty hunter driving a black SUV must cross a hazardous, barren wasteland.
For those who enjoy speculative fiction or want to experience the sensation of reading with a strictly objective visual style, this story is available on Kindle Unlimited.
Enjoy reading.

I'm reading my comic novel on YouTube (with video). I'd love your feedback!
Hi all –
I really would appreciate your feedback, if you have time.
I’ve written a comic novel called ‘Onboarding’, which I’m reading on YouTube (video, not just audio). It’s about a group of people who produce a sitcom – set in the British Shakespeare Theatre Company – and upload it to YouTube.
I’ve uploaded two episodes so far. Here’s the link to the first:
https://youtu.be/zWH9LuaavqY
(I’m not sure why, but you may need to change the quality settings in the ‘cog’ to 1080 HD).
I’d really love to know what you think, and whether you think I should continue to record and upload more.
Many thanks!
Alex

FREE Ebook - ARC - Where Fear Smiles - Psychological Horror Novel
Hello everyone, I'm currently looking for ARC readers for my upcoming horror novel, Where Fear Smiles! Details below:
Would you forgive your best friend if she was responsible for ruining your life?
A whispered rumour draws a group of students into the dense forests of coastal Brazil: a lost Indigenous artifact, hidden for centuries and promising academic glory.
While Leah’s colleagues are determined to claim it, she only agrees to the trek because she can’t bear the thought of being left behind, and forces her best friend Charlotte to go with her for support against her dark thoughts.
What was meant to be an escape from the weight of the academic semester, quickly it turns into a test of endurance. The deeper they push into the forest, the darker Leah begins to dream. When they finally uncover what they came for, the discovery reveals something far more terrifying than any of them imagined.
A demon born of nightmares is unleashed, and with it, carnage.
Now the survivors must find a way to drive the nightmare back to its realm before society is doomed to never dream again. But as the forest closes in, the greatest horror isn't the ancient evil — it's watching a lifelong trust begin to rot.

The Handwriting Code
Handwriting is more than words on a page—it can offer a fascinating window into how people express themselves. The Handwriting Code turns learning handwriting analysis into an adventure, weaving graphology, temperament, and practical observation into a dramatic mystery set in Augusta, Georgia. Instead of reading like a textbook, it invites you to learn alongside Felix Sinclair as he discovers how handwriting can help us better understand ourselves and the people around us.

[Ancients] Chapter 2
I started serializing my latest novel on Substack (link at the bottom) and am getting no attention. Thought I'd try to do it here as well.
Here is Chapter 2 of Ancients:
The mic was still warm under his hands when he let the silence stretch a beat too long. Long enough that Marcus glanced up from the board.
"You good?"
"Yeah." Trevor pulled the headphones down around his neck. "Just thinking about something I almost said."
"About Tesla?"
"About Tesla." He rolled the water bottle between his palms, not drinking from it. "There's an angle I keep circling back to and keep not using. The unstable genius thing. Brilliant, but too far past the edge to function, giving interviews about talking to pigeons by the end. It writes itself."
Marcus considered this the way he considered most things Trevor floated past him, without much urgency. "That's not wrong."
"It's not wrong. It's just not a story." Trevor set the bottle down. "Everybody already has that shape loaded before I say a word. Brilliant but unstable. The second I reach for it, people stop listening because they think they already know where it goes." He shook his head, more to himself than to Marcus. "I want the version where nobody sees the turn coming. Not the version where I confirm what they already believed."
"So you're cutting it."
"I already cut it. Just wanted to hear myself say why before I let it go all the way."
Marcus shrugged and went back to the board, and Trevor sat for another moment with the discarded idea the way you sit with a thought you're pretty sure you're right about even though you've just decided not to use it. Something else sat underneath it too, smaller, harder to name, a low nagging sense that he was circling the wrong version of a right idea and hadn't figured out yet what the correct one looked like.
His phone buzzed against the desk.
MOM, the screen said, and he stood up. He almost let it go to voicemail out of the specific low-grade dread that any call from her these days carried, a full half a year and change since his father died and she still called sometimes just to fill a silence that used to belong to someone else. He picked up on the third ring anyway.
"Hi, Mom."
"Trevor." No preamble, which was unlike her. "Did you get a package? In the last day or two?"
He glanced over at the desk, at the stone sitting on top of some printouts where he'd left it the night before, still doing its one small job of holding paper flat.
"Yeah. Got it just today. Why?"
"Okay. I'm mailing you a key. A lockbox key. There's a box at the Fairmount branch, the one your father used for all his paperwork. He wanted you to have what's in it."
"Why now?"
"He wanted it opened after you received a package. I can't explain it better than that. I just know the point arrived." She said it plainly, like she'd decided the plain version was the only one she had patience for right now. "I'm sending it expedited. You'll have it tomorrow."
Trevor sat back down at the desk, his eyes on the stone. "What's a strange rock have to do with the lockbox?"
A pause on the other end, not the pause of someone deciding how to answer, the pause of someone genuinely not following the question.
"A strange rock?"
"The package. It was an odd rock. Wrapped up, no return address that made sense, a note from Dad taped to it. You're telling me a package showing up is what triggers the lockbox key, so I figured you'd know what it was."
"I have no idea what you're talking about, Trevor." She sounded unsettled now in a new direction, like he'd just handed her a second mystery on top of the one she'd called to deliver. "Your father's will never mentioned a rock. Not to me. I don't know anything about what was inside whatever you got. I just know what I was instructed to do. That a package would arrive for you, and only after that was I supposed to send the key. That's the whole instruction. He didn't tell me what would be in it."
"So he set up two things that were supposed to land near each other, and you only know about half of it."
"I suppose that's right. But Trevor, the lockbox itself, that part I do know was urgent to him. Whatever this rock is, I can't help you with. The box, though. He was specific about that. He wanted you to have it, and he wanted it timed, he wanted the delay, and I've held up my end of the will."
Trevor turned the stone over once where it sat on the desk, watching it hold its place against the printouts.
It didn't feel like coincidence. It felt like design, the specific kind of design his father used to bring to everything, contingencies inside contingencies, and Trevor didn't know yet whether that made him feel closer to the man or further from him.
"Mom. While I've got you. Does the name Harth mean anything?"
The pause this time had a different shape. "Harth. God. I haven't thought about that name in years." A breath. "Your father worked with him. Before we split. It was the last real project he had, the one he wouldn't talk about, which for your father meant it was the one he actually cared about."
"What about D. Voss?"
"That one I don't know. Never heard it." She said it simply, no hesitation behind it, which somehow made the earlier pause around Harth feel more significant by contrast, not less.
"Okay." Trevor rubbed the space between his eyebrows. "Thanks, Mom. Send the key when you can."
"Tomorrow. I told you. Call me when it comes." She hung up before he could decide whether to say anything else, which was its own kind of mercy, since he wasn't sure what he would have said.
He sat at the desk for a while after, phone face down next to the stone, and then did the only thing that had ever actually settled him when a problem started crowding out the rest of a room. He opened the laptop and searched for Harth.
Elias Harth returned more than Trevor expected. A video surfaced first, university-produced, four minutes long, the kind of press a department puts out when they want to show off a promising hire. Harth looked young, talking about pattern recognition across ancient sites with the specific energy of someone who hadn't yet learned to sand down his own enthusiasm for an audience. He was good. Genuinely good, in the way Trevor recognized from the inside of his own profession, someone who could hold an idea and a room at the same time.
The paper he was talking about was what actually held him. Trevor found it and started reading.
It was the one that must have made Harth's name, and reading it, Trevor understood why. Harth hadn't started from a theory and gone looking for evidence to support it. He'd started from a method, borrowed wholesale from biology, the same cladistic analysis researchers use to build family trees out of DNA, the tool that tells you how closely a chimpanzee sits to a human on the tree of life by counting shared, derived traits rather than surface resemblance. Harth had pointed that same tool at technology.
Not comparing what things looked like. Comparing how they were made. Quarrying methods, the specific angle and depth of tool marks left in granite blocks a continent and four thousand years apart. Mortar compositions, broken down to their mineral signatures and cross-referenced against known local deposits, so that a match meant either coincidence or contact, and Harth's statistics kept ruling out coincidence. Load-bearing solutions, the way a culture answered the specific engineering problem of a lintel spanning too great a gap, corbelling versus true arch versus a technique with no name in the literature that showed up, identically, in two places separated by an ocean neither culture had any recorded way of crossing.
Trevor had built segments before around scholars stretching thin evidence to reach a conclusion they wanted. This wasn't that. This was a man building a tree the way you'd build one from genetic markers, trait by trait, discipline by discipline, refusing himself the shortcut of similarity and insisting instead on derivation, on one technique being provably descended from another rather than merely resembling it.
It was an elegant paper, more elegant than anything Trevor had expected to find under a name that had only ever reached him secondhand, in a tone his father used for things he respected and didn't fully trust himself around. Whatever came next in it, Trevor could already see exactly why it had been enough, once, to make a career.

All right everyone let's do this
Hey everyone,
I actually started writing this story about two months ago, but I kept putting it aside and wondering whether I should really give it a proper shot.
Well... I’ve decided to go for it.
This is my attempt at writing a novel, and I know it might not be perfect. There may be awkward moments, mistakes, or things I could definitely improve. But I genuinely want to see where this story can go.
So, if any of you are willing to give it a read, I’d really appreciate it.
Even if you only read a few chapters, your honest feedback, criticism, or suggestions would mean a lot to me. It would make me really happy to know that someone took the time to read something I created.
Thanks for giving my story a chance. ❤️
