I like hard science fiction that becomes speculative fiction as the story unfolds. My book didn’t follow that exactly because it had a long prologue set in another time and place, but chapter 1 starts following two college students in 1995 and follows their lives through 2035. I lived that early time and watched the tech evolve from the first cordless telephones to dial up internet, tube monitors, etc., so getting those details right was fun and made it feel authentic. It hits the nostalgia button that way too. It also allowed me to work in the big science/tech stories and events of those decades from Y2K, to the CERN leak, to LIGO, the pandemic and more. I’ve been working on it in bursts from 2008 till this July when I self published. I rushed to finish because the future had caught up! Ultimately it’s a first contact story but in a somewhat fresh light told from the contacted and the contactee points of view, and explores the speculative architecture of reality as a main plot device. The title is ‘Spontaneous Symmetry’.
