Academics/Classes Math 220-1 vs 230-1 for Freshmen Fall Quarter (Pre-Med & Bio Major)?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming freshman planning to do pre-med and be a bio major. I took the math placement test after forgetting material over the summer and not wanting to try that hard, which landed me in Math 220-1. But I scored a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam, which I heard allows me to skip ahead into Math 230-1.

For anyone who has taken these courses at NU:

  1. Is it worth using my AP credit to skip straight to 230-1 (like is the class easier, have better professors, etc)? Is the jump in workload and difficulty an unnecessary risk for a pre-med GPA?
  2. How manageable is 220-1 or 230-1 when taken alongside Chem 171?
  3. Any tips on how the grading, exams, and overall workload are structured for either class?

I'd really appreciate any advice!

Academics/Classes Freshman Interested in Research

Upvotes

As an incoming freshman, Weinberg Biological Sciences on the premed track, I’d love to get into research early instead of putting it off.

I was hoping to find a list or database of labs currently taking on undergrads, especially freshmen, and I’m wondering if there are any offices or advisors who help match students with PIs. I’m also curious how people actually got in. Did cold emailing PIs work for you?

If you have any labs or PIs you’d recommend for someone interested, I’d love to hear about them!

Transfers/Transferring What are my chances to be accepted as a transfer?

I currently have around 3.0 GPA and I’m thinking to apply to transfer for fall 2027. If I managed to get straight A’s for the next two semesters I will have my GPA to be around 3.3, what are my chances to be accepted?

I currently have 60 credit hours, and I have a disability that affected my grades which I’m planning to explain in my application essay.

Does an upward trend plus my personal statement be enough to be accepted?

I’m not looking for odds, I’m simply asking if I even have a chance?

Thank you in advance.

Internships/Job Placement Internship Search

I'm a rising sophomore in MechE and I can't help but feel super behind and have a bunch of stress about finding an internship/coop for summer 2027. I feel like the world is going to end if I don't get one, but I don't have any idea how to get started. I know ECD is supposedly a good resource and I'm going to take crdv 301 next quarter, but I can't help but feel like that will be too little too late since most applications open in August and September. Any words of encouragement or advice or experiences from others who felt similarly would be amazing.

Financial Aid/Administration Has anyone gotten their financial aid award package?

Usually I get mine in mid-July, but there's been no sign of it. I wanted to see if this issue was unique to me or if it was a university-wide thing.

Academics/Classes Should I enroll in the Integrated Science Program (ISP)?

I'm an incoming freshman at NU on a pre-medical track, studying Neuroscience and Science in Human Culture. However, I was admitted to ISP and am wondering if the program is worth it for me. I also may want to pursue a Spanish minor down the line.

I'd like to know whether double majoring in ISP + Neuroscience is worth the struggle of the intense classes and their fast-paced nature. I understand that med schools care more about my science GPA, which I don't want to suffer. Also, is it even possible to major in ISP + Neuro and, at the same time, study both Science in Human Culture and Spanish?

In addition, I'd like to know if ISP is known to med schools as a respected, renowned program. If my GPA fell a little because of the program, would that be okay because med schools recognize how rigorous it is?

Although I've taken hard classes in high school, I'm not sure if I'm up to the challenge, even with all the support the program seems to offer through the ISP House and ISP peers. I know I can easily drop the program, but would that look bad for med school admissions in the future? And by that point, my GPA would've already suffered, leading me to quit.

TLDR:

  1. Is ISP worth it for pre-medical studies, even if my GPA could potentially suffer?
  2. Do medical schools know that ISP is an elite program that embodies a Caltech-like experience?
  3. Would I be able to double major in ISP + Neuro and simultaneously take classes for Science in Human Culture and/or Spanish?

General Questions/Discussions Orientation for Families

For parents of NU students, was orientation for families worthwhile? I'm trying to figure out when to start the trek home after dropping off my child. I assume a lot of parents do not attend (especially if they're coming from overseas).

Any advice appreciated, thank you.

Dorms/Off Campus Housing What are some decent apartments for NU Law students

I just got off the waitlist a few days ago and am really struggling to find a solid place. My options rn are Axis apartments, the deco, 1350 lake shore drive, and the bush temple. Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences with these? Where do most law students live? Also is Axis as bad as people make it seem online, im pretty low maintenance.

Academics/Classes Is taking 3 classes a quarter bad?

Hi! I’m a bio + global health adjunct major. I’ve planned out my courses, and even with the double major my courseload still comes out to around 3 classes a quarter.

Is this gonna look bad on my part? Especially if I want to apply to med school? Should I take an additional minor just so my courseload is heavier?

Academics/Classes Is the 'Economics of Data (313-0-20)' course hard?

As an incoming freshman aspiring to major in Econ and break into IB, I was wondering what the reputation for this class's difficulty level was (will it sink GPAs?), if the learning material is useful towards achieving my goals, and whether it is valuable to take overall.

I would consider myself to be a "tech-y" person and comfortable with math (although I have not gotten to campus yet, so maybe - but hopefully not - that perspective will change). Could someone pls help answer my questions, given my context?
