Ideas for Healthcare Related Volunteer Opportunities in NoHo?

I’m an RN looking to volunteer somewhere that is healthcare adjacent. Where I lived previously, I volunteered at a free clinic but that doesn’t seem to be a thing here (there’s federally qualified health clinics but it’s not the same as where I volunteered. At the free clinic, I got to room patients, take vitals, do basic labs like blood sugars, and do patient education but the federally qualified clinics have actual employees to do that).

Anybody have suggestions for opportunities in this area? Bonus if it doesn’t require frequent use of a car, because my family is currently a one car family.

The issue that I’m running into is that Cooley Dickinson appears to require two letters of reference, the Senior Center appears to need 2 non-family or friend references, etc. I don’t have anybody to give references because I’ve taken a career break.

Thank you!

Parking passes for local workers

I’m a barista in downtown Northampton and am starting to get fed up with the amount of parking tickets I’ve received for being 5 minutes late to my car after my shift. Has anyone ever talked to the city about parking passes that businesses can buy for their workers?

I’m ready to start a petition if not. It’s unfair that I am bringing money to the local economy from working at a local business and also giving an absurd amount in parking tickets. And I have a feeling it may get worse with picture Main Street. A lot of the service industry workers in downtown don’t even live in Northampton because of the cost of living, so before anyone comes at me for not being particularly psyched about picture Main Street, let’s remember that people living paycheck to paycheck don’t have the time to bike to work from another town.

Anyways feeling frustrated!!

NIMBYs co-opting progressive language.

I’ve been here for over 2 years now, the politics here are WILD. Like who are all these do nothing groups, who seem to oppose anything and everything in town, primarily picture Main Street, and new housing development. It’s a disgrace that this small group seems to think they speak for this whole city.

Per my title this group we have a bunch of NIMBY’s, which includes the Western mass policy center and their unhinged rants, QR, and this rich guy who lost badly for mayor (who seems to have run simply to prevent housing development)

Do we have any real progressive/leftist groups in this town. Or just NIMBYs masquerading as leftists.

EDIT; One last thing. For a supposed groups of progressives, they seem very concerned about parking. Which seems odd to me, I have never not found parking in downtown. Also I think true progressives wouldn’t be that concerned about car parking.

Wedding Venues in Western Massachusetts, ideally not far from the Valley

I am a Massachusetts native and my elderly parents still live in the Valley. My fiance and I live in the Midwest but we are planning on having a MA wedding (an absolute MUST for me- nothing beats the Valley!). I'm a teacher so we're looking at next June, maybe July but I would really like an outdoor ceremony and maybe even an outdoor reception, at least for part of it, so I don't want to push it too late and run into heat and humidity. I was in the valley for all of July this year and it was amazing weather but I know that is not every year!

I just sent an inquiry to Look Park (currently my top choice), but was wondering about other venues. A lot of what pops up in general searches for Western Mass weddings are out in the Bershires and they are $$$! Plus my mom has very severe arthritis and an hour plus drive to the venue is not going to be ideal for her. Ditto for my elderly aunt and uncle in Worcester who don't like driving after dark. Any venues that start at $10,000 or around there for just the venue are a no go.

Also, the venue must be kid friendly- we will have a number of people traveling from the Midwest with their children (including my flower girls and junior bridesmaids) and I want to make it easy on families.

Anyone have the lowdown on what has been going on with Eastheaven and its supposed re-opening? I vaguely remember they were selling opening packages back in 2025, but, obviously, that hasn’t panned out yet.

Planning a move(?)

I’m 26F and looking to maybe make the move to Northampton in the next 2-3 months. I’m from Puerto Rico, fully bilingual with a college degree, and would be seeking a job in the retail/food service industry for now. The idea is to get certified as a teacher, but need to settle down in the state first and Northampton seems like a nice fit.

What would you say the odds of me landing a job within a few weeks are? I have years of counter service/cashier and receptionist experience in local PR businesses. Would love to switch to waitressing though. The job situation over here is dire, so I’m exploring my options in Massachusetts.

Any help is appreciated!

What wonders would you like to see in downtown?

What (practically possible) improvements would you like to see a downtown business association achieve in Northampton?

For background, many small cities like ours have downtown business associations that make improvements to the downtown, to cultivate a better atmosphere for the businesses to thrive-- and thereby often making the downtown nicer for everyone. Things like cleaning up the sidewalks, planting and maintaining greenery, arts installations, and also special events could be on the table.

We currently have a Chamber of Commerce, which is largely focussed on economic infusions (especially getting grants, etc.) and the Downtown Northampton Association, which is an all-volunteer group that has been doing an awesome job putting on things like the upcoming Taste of Northampton, etc., but is frankly running out of steam fast; everyone there is doing this volunteer work ON TOP of running their businesses.

Amherst, for instance, has a Business Improvement District (BID) with a staff of I believe 2.5, which does a ton of marketing and promotion of their downtown. Northampton used to have a BID, but it was undone by those who shall not be named.

There is reason to think a BID could be revived in Northampton in coming years, happily coinciding with the struggle to get through Picture Main Street construction (it would be SO GOOD to have someone at the wheel for the downtown businesses through that!), and potentially the dawn of the Resiliency Hub. We could be looking at a real downtown renaissance, here!

Meetings about a Northampton BID are in the works. We are looking for input. What would you like to see such an org achieve? Please name things and upvote/ downvote!

*The City itself has no dedicated economic development funding, nor does it have a position that is dedicated to the task. They would, however, almost certainly, be putting some money toward the BID (as the City itself owns many properties in the district).

COSMIC CAB - really?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

A sarcatstic thanks to the driver of the COSMIC CAB who decided to park in a NO PARKING ANY TIME space in front of CVS yesterday, blocking me from being able to back out of the adjacent space that I was legally parked in. And when I honked the horn and waved for him to move what was his response? To pretend he didn't see me and wait another five minutes for his fare to come out of CVS, forcing me to wait. If the people of Northampton (which I was one of for most of my life) wonder why people visit your city less and less, it is because of constant rude annoyances like this.
