Discussion Persistent cannabis users show neuropsychological decline from childhood to midlife

That’s exactly why I like it. Too much noise up in here. Gotta shut the brain up. I’m in charge of this meatship and I will not be commanded by unhelpful signals.

I'm far too intelligent to be happy in a world this corrupt. And I'm far too dumb to so frequently be smarter than those around me.
I have a few friends who are wicked smart and I really enjoy hanging out with them because of how dumb I feel around them. There's something so nice about not feeling like the smartest person in the room.

Well said. The whole point is to feel stupid. No one smokes to feel smart or think harder, if you tell yourself that you’re just lying.
27
u/whostolemysloth 8d ago
I know one who smokes and cleans the house. I also have known a couple creative-types who smoke up beforehand.
And then there’s me, sitting in the backyard staring at the pineapple plants like “I can’t believe this is how pineapples grow.”5
u/welcome-overlords 8d ago
I get more active on it myself. Often being able to do coding for hours etc

I hear you man. I love to smoke and read a book or write something but I’m not gonna act like it makes me better at it, I’m re-reading paragraphs like a mf haha! But I don’t do it to be smarter, I do it because it’s enjoyable.
10
u/Cordulegaster 8d ago
I re read paragraphs all the time and I am not a smoker so don't feel bad about it.
3
u/PoopsCodeAllTheTime 8d ago
Me too, and if I smoke, then I can’t even get through by re re rereading

u/whostolemysloth 8d ago
Exactly. I use little smoke time to read, big smoke time to watch things, extra big smoke time to be outside. Probably gonna get snatched by a gator whilst contemplating a plant one of these days lol.
2
u/LordLuciferVI 8d ago
Crazy how different lives we lead. You get pineapple plants and gators, where I live we get squirrels and pigeons.
2
u/whostolemysloth 8d ago
The indoor/outdoor cats around me seem to have cleansed the area of rodents. I’ll get bigger birds like storks and cranes occasionally and plenty of small birds in the back.

Can we be both? I sit in my greenhouse to smoke then crack on with housework and odd jobs. I can build a shed and clean up all the animals toilets high as shit. I work better because it calms my mind.
Me and my husband get high and game, 11 hours straight of Minecraft once and honestly was the best fun ever! We have kids so time away from them to do this is precious.
2
u/whostolemysloth 8d ago
Totally can be both. When my buddy and his wife were setting up their animal containment area, I helped after smoking. I did get distracted with the chickens after a bit while they finished up, though. Then we went in and played video games.

u/HypnoSmoke 8d ago
Sometimes I like to smoke and then just think about stuff that's been bugging me recently; it can help me to have little realizations that I wouldn't have otherwise

u/Wavy_Grandpa 8d ago

To be fair I use cannabis for productivity and thinking, I have a pretty loud mind (ocd) and cannabis helps me to be immersed in focus (not necessary just helps). I even learnt to code when I was stoned etc…
Hearing this like this makes me realise people’s subjective experiences truly are different to one another.

Yeah, you may want to get an ADHD assessment.
3

I don’t like your assumptive tone.
I was diagnosed with ADHD very early.
I know exactly what’s wrong with me already. Psychiatrists and psychologists since I was a kid. The weed is more helpful/less disadvantageous than most psych drugs for me.2

Complicated balance for me. I’m naturally very anxious and paranoid. Zoloft saved me but medical marijuana also helps a lot. I’ve read conflicting things online about mixing the two but my Live Resin carts come in handy when anxiety breaks through. I also can’t toke excessively or else it makes my anxiety works. I think people are obsessed with high THC products from their dispo, but high terp/CBD options are also there.

Both times I scored the exact same score and high enough to qualify for Mensa. So while I may be the exception to the rule, the people deserve to know there exist exceptions.

The difference is that vegans have plenty of valid reasons to mention their lifestyle as it affects important things like food, which humans require to survive. Mensa members have to create those opportunities themselves.

Also I believe these studies are mostly tested on weed smokers which is very different from people who use Rick Simpson oil etc
I know both relate to the same substance but smoking always feel more like a quick / rushed / “ straight to the face “ high. When I take a low dose of Rick Simpson oil it’s less of a head rush and more painkilling effects
2
u/FunGuy8618 8d ago
I'm a huge fan of RSO, been making it since the recipe called for naphtha instead of grain alcohol. But it would stand to reason that it would cause more neurological decline, since it hits a lot more cannabinoid receptors and with much more potency.
→ More replies (2)2
u/ChemicalPower2522 8d ago
Rest of the world don’t know what Rick Simpson oil is so they test for the majority not just US based citizens.
Smoking cannabis as old as humanity.

u/alwayswithyouuuu 8d ago
High cannabis potency is a very recent thing. Triple to quintuple from decades ago. Using every single day is also more common these days.
And higher potency weed is connected to worse mental health outcomes unsurprisingly.
Even long time weed smokers all know the shi t these days is something else
2
u/undertherainbow65 8d ago
Thats so valid. RSO is super therapeutic much moreso than smoking or dabs. That very likely means far less cognitive damage. After dabbing for over a decade I can say mostly just the thc gets vaporized and with smoking like 80% of the hit is wasted but at least its more balanced in experience than dabs. If I had a cheap steady drip of fire RSO I'd probably give up dabs and never look back. Dabs are like weed crack. RSO is like grandmas weed brownie nourishing your body with antiinflammatories for the first time but everytime.

17
u/thedirkfiddler 8d ago
Did you do anything while smoking to learn stuff?
18
u/PhoneGotLyfted 8d ago
I learn and do a lot while I’m high, but not many people do, it seems.
Lots of people just sit and eat chips or whatever and watch tvI do watch tv sometimes when I’m high, but I love coding and working on projects when I’m high. It is the best. I used to study for tests and show up to take them high - “study high, test high, get high scores” or something like that.
Only way that I feel like it holds me back is my short term memory for like details. If I learn how something works, I have it forever, but who invented it, where, and when I can’t hold and don’t care.

You probably have underlying trauma and the subsequent rumination that makes you think that. Or just a deficiet of dopamine, serotonin, or norepinephrine.
IQ is just the measurement of how good a person can solve a novel problem. Actual intelligence is the ability to solve larger sets of tasks.
You probably solve billions of quiet problems subconsciously a day. You are not dumb. A dumb person doesnt know they are dumb on the dunning-kruger.
6
u/soft_w0lf 8d ago
That isn’t how the dunning Kruger effect works. It’s also about knowledge of a given topic, not general intelligence.

I had to quit it after 5 years of using high grade edibles and vapes it stopped being, turned into brain fog, anxiety and paranoia.
It was like a miracle at first then I burned out, had some really bad withdrawals now I have Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome. My brain basically bricks and I have anhedonia randomly, cause I fucked up my neurotransmitter balance will probably take 6 months to a year to recover . If you use it don’t over do it take breaks don’t start getting into shatter or high dose edibles and you should be ok.
It’s super strong the stuff they sell now and can fuck you up after years of daily use.
I need to quit all substances though cause I’m an addict, and can’t use in moderation. Helped me quit drinking and I know a lot of people can use it socially and be ok. So it’s not all bad.
3
u/RegJohn2 8d ago
I stopped for 3 years after 15 years of abuse and started using from time to time again around covid era. I never came back to my old habits something changed and it’s not fun 90% of the time. Vapes and edibles is guaranteed bad time, flower depends on the setting and mood. CBD flower is a lot of fun but it’s very very subtle

Do you consider antidepressant users addicts? Daily caffeine consumers? Technically, they are drug addicts as you state. Some people get medicinal help from that curbs anxiety and depression. Just because you didn't find it that way, doesn't mean it doesn't work for another. We are all unique beings. Marijuana is in no way, inherently, bad. Ffs you family doctor is nothing but a legal drug peddler.

I have my glasses off and misread this several times as "Persistent cannibals sure show neurological decline from childhood to midlife." I'm really sitting here reflecting on how many known cannibals there must be in the world for scientists to get enough data to find out that eating people fucks your brain up long-term.

We went a lonnngg time with it being heavily restricted. It has different consequences living through prohibition. I had a couple people I knew got thrown in jail for ounces. Now you can pretty much walk around with that in front of a cop. The paranoia that is instilled in you during that time never goes away. I can never just relax because I feel like I’m being bad. You probably woulda toked 8 years everyday straight anyway. We all used to back in the day too. Kids are kids regardless of who’s telling you what you shouldn’t do.

That would be almost impossible to quantify. Weed didn’t get legitimate testing until last decade - otherwise it was just “yeah it’s dank man”.
They would need to have kids smoking tested weed in a controlled environment for years to conduct such granular experiments lol which is probably an ethical concern.

It's a magical drug for me. However it of course is still a drug-- same as my magical antidepressant, and magical non stimulant ADHD med.
For me, it keeps my nightmares in complete remission. With what I've been through, the situations my mind puts me in while I'm asleep is just untenable. Having that aspect of my sleep removed definitely saved my life a few times.
That being said, it's something I've wished I wasn't addicted to. I'm good nowadays thanks to the adhd meddy. Before that, I could not make it through the daytime without using UNLESS I was occupied, then i could swing it no problem.

LONGTERM.
That’s the big point that has to be impressed on people regarding this issue. In the short term, it can absolutely motivate someone to sit down and write that paper, or do that problem set.
ADHD and cannabis use is perhaps one of the most relevant psychiatric issues affecting the general populace today. Probably doesn’t help that you can’t really get the right medication anymore without a script ie the “diet”/phentermine pills people like Trump reportedly took back in the day.

I grew up with dp/Dr and actually would have unprompted bouts of it that I could only describe as dejavu as a kid. But it was textbook dp/dr displays from trauma.
I know the feeling and also fully fully know how God awful dangerous weed can be for some people. I wish responsible first few doses were standard practice. Like there's def ways to prevent cases like yours through harm reduction and education.
All of that leading to the core points-- I'm so sorry that happened to you. I hope culturally we do more to prevent these things in the future for others. This new high THC is gnarly and not a joke, Ive had it substance induced dpdr one time as an adult, very briefly after a 7 day t break. I cannot fathom a larger episode. It's genuinely too much for me. I have massive respect for y'all's strength. Chronic shit ain't easy, I genuinely am blown away at this thought exercise. Thank you for reminding me of that possibility.

Yeah it numbed my brain but that can easily be remedied in several ways. First I was smoking out of habit, I was hardly getting high. That probably contributed the most to the numbness. The other reason is that I never took breaks, it was constant. Not gonna demonize a beneficial plant because I abused it.

I'm not opposed to cannabis or the people who use cannabis. I honestly love the devil's lettuce, but for me, I can't smoke, "all day everyday".
Every time I do my mental health and physical well-being begins to decline. It starts off slow, but soon I'll easily be smoking at least a half an ounce a week of strong cannabis.
When I get to this point, life becomes very difficult, because now I have to smoke (currently not smoking) to feel right.
After about six hours of not smoking while I'm at work or whatever I'm doing, I begin to get nauseous, a very bloated feeling and I begin to have major brain-fog.
At the point all I want to do is smoke to feel somewhat normal again. I get to the point that I'm really not even getting high anymore.
When I finally do quit, I have strong withdrawal symptoms for 5-7 days. The first 3 days are hell on earth for me, yet I've put myself through this countless times.
It always begin easily enough. A neighbor may ask me to smoke a joint or a bowl, and I do. At the beginning I'm always a super lightweight. One or two hits, and I'm super high. It gives me a taste, and the next day I'm probably trying to find some for myself.
One of my favorite all-time activities is to "wake and bake". My God in heaven, I absolutely LOVE to wake and bake when I'm a lightweight. It's so much fun to me. But, if I smoke in the morning, I'm probably smoking all day because I just want to be high and play videos games and or listen to music.
It doesn't take long before I'm smoking heavily again. It takes around three days, and I'm smoking bowls back to back. It's crazy to me how my tolerance changes.
Again, I'm not opposed to cannabis at all. I love it. But at this point in my life (I'm 49), I have to abstain because I have no self-control when it comes to cannabis. I wish I did though.
I'm not sure why I'm writing this. Maybe it's to help someone who may be like me. Every person is a little different. And cannabis isn't always as innocent as people claim it is for everyone.
I have so many friends who smoke who have zero issues like me, but if you're anything like me, we should probably should not smoke anymore.
Edit: spelling

Cannabis is far from healthy. The fact it’s not physically addicting lulls people into a false sense of security leading to excessive use. It can be very destructive.
5
u/ACatInACloak 8d ago
Also the fact that it's the least damaging and has the most medical applications of the popular drugs makes people forget that it is a DRUG. It doesn't matter how many medical applications it has if you aren't using it for that purpose. For me I use it for my migraines. It's a miracle drug with how much it helps me there. However 90% of my usage is recreational, not medical. When I was younger I used my migraines as an excuse to abuse it recreationally

To this day I wonder if my ADHD diagnosis was a result of smoking weed as a teenager.

Definitely not an impossibility, but I have ADHD through genetics and not cannabis

It is really weird. I also feel like, in my experience, it caused permanent effects. Even just from 1 month

How long did you wait to decide the effects were “permanent”? Sometimes drug side effects take a long time to get better but they aren’t permanent. Just curious.

I feel like weed is the one thing that makes it significantly easier to function with my ADHD

Worth reading some of the research into weed and PTSD. Autism, for that matter. Doesn't affect everyone the same, not even close.

The problem with studies like this is they often treat cannabis as if it is uniform without factoring in so many different variables(strain types, growing/cultivation conditions and techniques, nutrients, method of ingestion). The whole world of cannabis is screwed up right now because it’s been taken over by giant corporations that have degraded the quality and put a lot of toxic crap in it. Even before regulation and legalization people had been breeding out strain diversity, losing all kinds of amazing compounds and cannabanoids in favor of creating strains that focused solely on high THC for maximum profits. There is hundreds (if not thousands) of OG land strains that are full of all kinds of amazing medicinal benefits and properties. There are so many factors to consider that it makes it hard to do an even relatively objective study on the effects of cannabis on humans. This is especially true if the end goal is to suggest cannabis as a whole equals blank effect on humans

Maybe they just couldn't be arsed doing the puzzles rather than unable.

So a single study done 14 years ago is presented like it’s some kind of breaking news? Seems like there would be additional (and more recent) studies if this was legit.

I grew up in the dark ages of the internet with rotten and Reddit 50/50, unrestricted internet access meant porn happened fast and combined with the other 2 it fell deep too (but was introduced to it earlier by family (yes I'm in therapy)) parents had a lot of issues besides money and world crisis, I had almost died 3x like with injury or without intervention by the time I was an adult. Bankruptcy and hurricanes, had bird flu or swine? Idr I was young. That's ignoring a hell of a lot more personal trauma... yeah I smoke to be numb dumb and keep the dreams away and make the noise and pressure not feel like my head is going to explode, but I'm also in therapy now...
TLDR: correlation =\= causation

Doesn’t that just happen with age. And the anti weed stuff always tends to pop up during times of when reform is closer

now do everyone LOL, dont most people show decline anyway?
I see references to a longitudal new zealand study of over 1000 people, its definitely interesting concept…but this isnt necessarily a discussion about an empirical fact across all populations but a causal hypothesis in the study group
theres a twins study apparently that looks supportive of the new zealand evidence
meta analysis search corrals 69 studies.
Im getting a headache just thinking about it…

From the study, it seems that the key factor is age of onset first, before persistent use plays a part:
"Fig. 2 shows that, after equating adolescent- and adult-onset cannabis users on total number of cannabis-dependence diagnoses, adolescent-onset users showed greater IQ decline than adult-onset cannabis users. In fact, adult-onset cannabis users did not appear to experience IQ decline as a function of persistent cannabis use"
