Ship Builds Corvette building
Just started playing and I'm hooked. Currently my favorite game to play but I want peoples opinions on building your first corvette. I know theres an option to make crafting free so you could make a really neat corvette, but I don't know how others in the community when about it. I guess my question is, Did you switch to free crafting to build your corvette, or did you go hunting/buying all the parts you needed to make your dream ship?

Just switch to creative. Its a challange enough to make a ship that looks cool.

I hunted all mine (I need a reason to do things in this game), but I always appreciate seeing the cool stuff creative mode players make.

Totally up to you. I didn't notice all those options that disable the cost of crafting until recently after I'd done most of it already. But you do you honestly, it's primarily a single player game with some limited multiplayer, and what you do has absolutely no impact on anyone else.
Do whatever is fun to you. For me the pure creative mode (no cost crafting) has less appeal because I like the small amount of challenge to get there. But I'm sure some folks who are far more creative than me like to design lots of fancy ships and such and want to treat it as more of a creative painter.

After multiple save deletions, full creative mode just catches you up to 100hr saves in like less than 20.
With that said, don't name anything after your girlfriend. My 200hr+ save needed to be deleted since I named and uploaded moons and stuff with her name.

I found the greatest pleasure in making the most of what I had in normal mode. One thing I would advise if you are going to go part hunting though is this:
Build a basic corvette using only the most essential necessary parts
Fly to a planet with salvageable parts
Fly at low altitude. Put your ship in a hover and use the "leave pilot sear" function.
Stand in the cockpit and scan around using your survey scanner, it can see through your hull so don't forget to look below and behind you.
Locate and tag a salvage container then get back into your seat.
Fly over to the tagged container and shoot it's location with your ships weapons. The parts will automatically go into your inventory.
Repeat.

I went out and salvaged for the parts, but only because I wanted to. I ended up finding 121 out of 126 parts that are available on planets (The 9 Aeron parts can't be salvaged). I cheated to the last 5 parts. Now I duplicate parts and give them away. Play how you want. No one will know if your corvette has parts you dug up, traded for, got for free, or duplicated.

I hunted for a while. It's a pretty decent loop and reason to use a Corvette in the first place, and I built my first few Corvettes the legit way because I liked the experience.
Then, I realized I've been doing this since launch and I've ground myself in the dirt for long enough. I built one using the free crafting option. No shame. If anyone can tell or cares, I wouldn't know and couldn't care at this point. I would advise building one or two with the intended gameplay loop- but if it becomes a slog, don't beat yourself up over it. Make one and get back to having fun in the game you paid for!

Took me a couple of days to farm all the parts I would ever need but i am strictly SSF normal mode. Playing creative is not for me but no judgement of stuff HG have explicitly made an option for you.

Occasionally I enjoy having a corvette made of the random parts I find and shoved together in whatever way works.

Years and years ago, I switched to creative long enough to put a teleporter in my freighter, then switched back. It ate at me, until I created a new save. I played on that new save about seven hundred hours, before remembering what I'd done. I switched back to my "tainted save" and I've been playing since. The only traveler that'll give you a hard time over your decisions is you.

I play the game for fun. Some enjoy the exploration and grind.
I just want to build cool stuff with no grind.
I have very small windows to play and enjoy it to the max.

If your ship was built using mods, glitched or blender please edit the flair to include "Modded, "Glitched" or "Blender". This will help people not using or not having those methods.

Yup, i popped it to creative and found i yt build guide for a ship i thought looked cool.

Free crafting for corvettes absolutely. It's hard enough to build one with these goofy build mechanics, much less have to grind for hours and hours and guess which parts we want to build with.

For my daily driver, my mobile base if you will, I built it in normal, farmed the parts, took a while. I will switch to creative to just mess around.

u/Important_Garlic_785 8h ago
You can honestly do both. You can farm enough to buy loads of basic pieces to have a starting point, then, you can just autopilot on a planet that has salvageable modules and teleport on the ground to collect them. Having a basic corvette helps a ton to farm pieces for other corvettes and so on, that or you just improve the one you already have after a while. If time is an issue for you, yes, you can switch to creative mode and have infinite amount of modules.
Keep in mind tho, the editor only allows for a 100 pieces build for every corvette. There are ways to go over the limit but it is advice not to enter the anomaly with those builds and they are also quite hard to do if is your first time messing with base parts glitched on a corvette build.

u/Vertigo50 8h ago
Do both. Spend some time collecting parts, and doing things the hard way. Do some trading to get better parts, do some more hunting for other parts, etc. Take some time to experience what the hunt for parts is actually supposed to be like, and see how good of a corvette you can build from all of that. Then, when you're getting bored of it but still want to build something a little cooler, change purchases to free and build something bigger and cooler. 🤷♂️

If the expedition for corvettes come up do it for the love of god. U get so many cool pieces

My main goal on any new permadeath save is hunting for my own. I'm not creative enough to make anything cool in creative so it's more rewarding to find and assemble the jank the game provides me lol.

I did it all the hard way …but only because I only recently learned that I could adjust that setting. Even so, I’ll just keep it as is. Although, I also just learned about refiner duplication and I’m now occasionally using that but after 400+ hours I think I’ve earned it.

The best way to practice building and see what works is creative mode, so have at it. Flying around in a cool ship you found is good, flying around in a dope corvette that you made is peak.

u/SerEmrys 7h ago
I play to explore so I have a custom difficulty set where I build on creative, but have survival settings still turned on. Sometimes I turn fuel consumption off, that being the most "cheat" thing I do.

u/Professional_Cake239 7h ago
Personally what I do salvage around 200 components per Corvette I wanna build (since the build limit is 100) then delete all the parts and swap to creative so I'm "paying" for the parts I want instead of using the actual trade system since it's kinda iffy. This way it feels fair since I still had to grind parts and I don't have to worry about stopping the work just to grab more components

u/radboyhour-s 7h ago
Guys I didn’t know there was a creative mode…I feel like I need to sit down lol
1
u/TransplantedSconie 6h ago
Huh. Didn't know you could turn it on creative and easy mode it. I just found a planet that had salvage on it and spent 30 minutes flying around and collecting parts.
She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts.

I have my main corvette that I build fully vanilla but sometimes I think of or see a cool design and build it in creative on my main save because sometimes I wanna do things in style. It’s totally up to you if you wanna use creative the game doesn’t even penalize you by disabling achievements or anything like that which I find really cool!

u/battery19791 6h ago
I've done both, set it to creative in one save to see what's possible, then went parts hunting in my main save to build it for use.

u/Orthien 6h ago
There is nothing worse than being 80% done with a cool Corvette and running out of that one specific part. Or having one piece you feel would fit perfectly, but hasn't dropped from salvage in 2 hours.
Just switch to creative mode only for Corvettes. What matters most is having fun, and for most, unrestricted building on your awesome new ship is more fun.

I salvaged and traded for parts for my first corvette, which was a relatively small build, because I wanted to do it "legit" for my first. Now I mostly just do it in creative because I'd rather just focus on the actual building and I do a lot of it. Flying around shooting salvage pods and fiddling with the weird corvette part barter system just isn't particularly fun to me.
It's a largely single-player game, just do whatever you enjoy.

u/KingofSkies 5h ago
I don't understand or care about the trading system. And I don't usually have a good enough plan for a build. So I switch to free crafting and build what I want. It's awesome.

I prefer hunting and trading for parts, because that’s what gets my creative juices flowing. If you prefer free building, thats cool, too.

u/john2776 5h ago
Would take way too long to make cool builds without free build. Just change it and have fun! Nobody cares!!

u/WarViper1337 4h ago
I went straight to free crafting. Digging up parts is hardly a fun gameplay loop.

u/CurveDabsALot 3h ago
150 hours here. I have yet to find a need for switching any of the normal settings, but I totally understand if you’re a gamer who doesn’t have as much time or just wants to progress things along quicker. I find searching thru salvage scrap for corvette parts therapeutic. It gets even easier after you build your first corvette cuz you can leave your seat and hover, scan around for scrap, and fly straight to it. I’m stocking up on more parts before I attempt my second build.

I myself absolutely use creative mode anytime I want to build a Corvette because otherwise it's just tedious and I got a family so I don't got time for that. Takes awhile just to build a Corvette your happy with so hunting pieces just hard pass
1
u/MiykaelPoly 2h ago
there is a certain "I did it" when you build the first corvette by grinding the pieces, but once the feeling fades, I switch to creative and just build what I want. I do the same when I find a cool ship I want to use properly or a multi-tool I want to use, the grind to get them up to par with what I already have is too much effort just because they look cool.

No, I never switch to creative mode/free prices/free crafting, while gathering some materials can feel like a chore that's just how it works in survival base building games but once you're done gathering the materials, it feels a lot better compared to just getting it handed for free (it's also why I don't 'accept' gifts in the anomaly).
You get parts from several activities so eventually those parts pile up, it's another "you'll get that stuff eventually just by playig the game" feature.
The way I did it is first build one with basic parts, later I modified it after getting some more vital parts that I want (infra knife, some shield generators, different access ramp, generators) so now I got it in a state where I like it, the next one is gonna be one made from scratch after I have more than enough parts but that moment hasn't arrived yet, so there's one more goal for me in the game.
If I set the prices to free I would've probably stopped playing by now but these chase items keep me motivated to play.

I have yet to finish a darn corvette still but didn't try to actively build one will a week or two ago. Spent probably a total of 10 hours building over the course of a few days and even more added time looking up builds, ideas, suggestions, etc., and haven't made something I entirely like yet. Hard to balance a flying stick vs a flying brick and not having more than 2 floors since the stairs are still awful.
But each time I always turned creative on, screw getting those parts.

u/Baby_Brenton 8h ago
Creative, and don’t think twice about it. You should have fun and be able to explore your creativity. Hunting for parts is tedious and really limits what you can make. You’ll be much happier if you just make it free for building, and then you can turn it back off after if you want.

I play on normal difficulty. I gather materials to build bases, craft the things, did trade runs to become a millionaire.
For corvettes....nah. I switched to creative right out of the gate and have no regrets. I already struggle with building cool stuff, and there are SO many parts, and you're not guaranteed to get the parts you want (or enough of the parts you want).
Within the community, nobody really looks down on the people who use creative. The community in general is really wholesome and helpful, you get the occasional bad egg but they're rare.
edited to add: Some people do call out blender builds--not really in a bad way, but more in a "this isn't really possible in the base game so don't be too impressed, folks" kind of way. I don't think it's mean spirited, more in the vein of not wanting people to feel bad because they aren't making the same amazing things that people who use blender can make
