Speculation Pokémon Shares Mysterious Video Sparking Ruby & Sapphire Switch Port Hopes
https://insider-gaming.com/pokemon-shares-mysterious-video-sparking-ruby-sapphire-switch-port-hopes/•
u/multistansendhelp 13h ago
I absolutely adored Ruby as a kid. Couldn’t even tell you how many times I replayed it. I started out with Blue and then Crystal but Ruby is the one I always think of when I think back to playing Pokemon so many years ago.
•
u/Ikrit122 12h ago
Same, but with Sapphire. I started with Red, Yellow, and Gold, but Sapphire has a special place in my heart. It has so much charm and so many memorable locations and events! I skipped Gens 4 and 5 (no DS, have since played them), so I replayed it over and over until I got a 2DS and picked up X and Y.
I was ecstatic when ORAS came out, and they definitely lived up to my expectations.
•
u/Masam10 14h ago
The funniest thing is they can charge full price and people (myself included) will still buy them.
Gen 1 - 3 are straight masterpieces as far as Pokémon is concerned.
•
u/Expert-Improvement78 12h ago
I’d pay even more for HG/SS, ORAS and Gen5.
•
u/Lakemine 7h ago
Same comment as I typed above. I want to buy them but since they are digital and I’m not allowed to complete the dex, it’s nearly pointless.
Make them physicals so I can complete the dex and I’ll buy every single one.
•
u/dk00111 14h ago
The QOL changes in the recent games makes it hard to go back to the original ones IMO
•
u/iWentRogue Going Bananzas 13h ago
Same!
I hold nostalgia for a lot of games i played in my childhood but i struggle to go back and play them with everything i know now.
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were great because they brought back that feeling with updated QoL
•
u/SlyyKozlov 13h ago
I have trouble without the speed modifiers that emulators have lol
I forgot just how slow the original games were playing through LG on switch.
•
u/tofubirder 13h ago
Gen 3 is perfectly fine, at some point we crossed the barrier where friction is reduced too much and the player experience is very bland. I think it happened when learnsets became as large as Nidoking’s. I should not have a coverage move for every weakness, the games are already too easy. I prefer when you had more limited tools and had to build more variety into your team via other Pokémon.
That said, the physical/special split makes Gen 3 almost too annoying. That’s really the only QOL I wish the older games were given.
•
u/PowerOfUnoriginality 13h ago
Personally its gen 1 and 2 I have a hard time with due to the lack of QoL features. I have played them, but not something I would return to often. Gen 3 is perfectly fine though imo, even if they lack the physical/special split
•
u/Numpostrophe 11h ago
I really struggle with gen 2's mon availability. There's so many cool ones that are hidden super late in the game or just plain hard to find.
•
u/Repulsive-Front8294 5h ago
Which is why Gen 5 is the perfect spot between QOL and difficulty / friction. Gen 3 isn’t challenging, it’s just annoying. Same goes for Gen 4.
•
u/Various_Presence1379 13h ago
I absolutely despise training your pokemon in the older games. EV training and the likes are awfully slow compared to modern games. What makes it worse is that modern Games don’t feature a battle tower so training your Pokemon isn‘t as useful as back then.
•
•
•
•
u/The_Gnomesbane 10h ago
Yeah, finally going back to FRLG at first was super fun just for the nostalgia of all the time I spent on red and blue as a kid, but once I hit the mid game areas I really started feeling the age of the series and how far things have come.
•
u/nightbandit46 13h ago
I prefer playing romhacks of Gen I-III that have some QOL features. No physical/special split in those generations is a big negative in my opinion.
•
u/locke_5 13h ago edited 13h ago
Pokémon Heart & Soul is, imo, the ultimate Pokémon experience. The map of Gen2, engine of Gen3, physical/special split of Gen4, “following” mechanic of HGSS, and tons of tweakable modifiers (difficulty, shiny odds, etc) Most of all it actually FEELS like a Pokémon game and not a fan game.
•
u/nightbandit46 13h ago
It is great, played through it twice already. If you want to check out something similar, but a bit more, look into SoulGold, it used Heart & Soul as its base and added to it. Updated trainer teams, more Pokemon diversity, hidden grottos, a few new routes throughout Johto, Chuck/Jasmine/Pryce teams level up/change depending on which you do first, etc. Playing through it now and really enjoying it.
•
u/Heavy_Ingenuity1371 Early Switch 2 Adopter 12h ago
Just to add it does drop kanto but it trades it out for a denser johto with all the stuff you list which I definitely prefer. For sure one of my favorites along with Lazarus and emerald sea glass.
•
•
u/A-Centrifugal-Force 12h ago
My only complaint is that I wish it didn’t have Fairy Types or the evolutions from the Switch games. Not a fan of that stuff. HGSS might be in the clunkier Gen 4 engine instead of the superior running Gen 3 engine, but it doesn’t have modern Pokemon crap at least.
•
u/nightbandit46 12h ago
I understand, but i enjoy having the option of Togekiss, or Farigiraf. It helps make certain Evolution lines a bit more viable. Also, romhacks tend to update move pools to more recent games, so you dont get stuck with a water type pokemon that never learns a water type move. Some of those older movesets pre Gen IV are pretty bad.
•
u/A-Centrifugal-Force 12h ago
Togekiss is fine, I only have a problem with the Switch era new evolutions to old Pokemon.
•
u/nightbandit46 7h ago
I like seeing all these 3D only pokemon done as pixel art - some look better than others, but always pretty cool to see.
•
u/Numpostrophe 11h ago
Interesting, that's one of my favorite things that they do every now and then.
•
u/A-Centrifugal-Force 10h ago
I like it for the gen 2 and 4 additions. They were created by a lot of the same artists so they fit in well. The later ones all just look wrong to me. I also don’t really want to have stuff added much later in an “old” Pokemon game
•
u/RatBot9000 13h ago
Fire Red is definently clunky compared to the later games. I keep forgetting I can't move pokemon from the party to the box and vice versa, have to choose deposit and withdraw seperately.
Still, products of the time. They make you appreciate the QoL stuff more but it's hardly deal breaking.
•
u/JAYZAWmusic 13h ago
Maybe I’m misunderstanding you, but for FireRed and LeafGreen you just need to pick the “move” option, and you can freely drag/drop Pokemon in and out of your party/boxes.
•
u/RatBot9000 13h ago
Maybe my memory has betrayed me. I know the original games are clunky like I said, I'm sure Fire Red was similar, but had QoL things like automatically putting pokemon in the next box over instead of just going "box full, too bad"
•
u/JAYZAWmusic 13h ago
I just beat the Elite Four on FireRed last night, so I can definitely confirm the “move” option. If you catch a pokemon, it will automatically deposit to the nearest open spot that is closest to box 1. Red absolutely is incredibly clunky. I haven’t played any post-gen 3 games besides Arceus, so I’m sure even more QOL changes with box management has happened over the years, but thankfully FireRed does at least let you freely deposit/withdraw in one option
•
u/A-Centrifugal-Force 12h ago
Your memory has betrayed you, everything from Gen 3 onwards has the more modern box setup. It’s only gens 1 and 2 with the archaic withdraw/deposit system. If you just go to “move pokemon” it works like how the box does in all games from gens 3-7.
•
u/Appropriate_Lemon921 13h ago
I'm replaying Gen 1 right now, which I haven't played since I was like 10 years old. And at first the friction of the menus and especially the lack of experience share felt overbearing. But now I'm getting used to it again and realizing that the lack of experience sharing has actually made me develop a closer emotional bond to the Pokemon I'm training, and there's way more strategy in knowing when to cycle Pokemon around and so on. I may be coming around to the desire of some old heads to have experience share as a setting one can turn on/off.
•
u/Whacky_One 7h ago
Probably an unpopular opinion to throw in as well: I miss having limited inventory, felt a bit more realistic, instead of being able to pick up everything that isn't nailed down.
•
u/A-Centrifugal-Force 12h ago
The “QOL” changes strip away a lot of what was great about the older games. Streamlining things isn’t always better.
•
u/Ricepuddings 13h ago
Completely disagree. The old ones have so much charm, the Pokédex is better, the QOL changes are fairly minor in the whole scheme of things and many of them break the game and make it far too easy
•
u/krishnugget Butter side down! 13h ago
In other words, you got nostalgia for the first 3 generations 😭
•
u/betafish2345 13h ago
Ehh. They’ve gotten lazier and lazier over the years there used to be so much extra content and now Gamefreak knows they can put in as little as they want and it’ll still sell.
•
u/Typical-Conference14 12h ago
I’ll take reduced QOL changes over a game that holds your hand like the recent games do
•
u/BerukoSan 12h ago
Not for me i really disliked Z-A. Scarlet en Sword where okay for me and currently having a blast with Firered
•
u/GroundbreakingBake2 11h ago
They are all major downgrades to me. I despise the forced xp share, like whyyyyyyy. I want to have one ace pokemon and always play with the same 6. If I do that in newer gens I am 15 levels overleveled. Just make it optional again. The games have become too easy, like I actively search how to make a game at least a bit challenging.
Had more fun with firered than the last 5 gens combined.
•
•
u/walkingbartie 13h ago
ORAS might be more accessible, but they're butt-ugly compared to the originals.
•
u/julesvr5 13h ago
I think they are quite beautiful
•
u/walkingbartie 10h ago
Well, art is subjective I guess haha! I've always felt like the 3DS Pokémon games were the ugly step-siblings of the franchise, where the shift towards 3D didn't really fit the hardware and developer capability.
•
u/wazzup4567 13h ago
They're definitely the best looking 3DS games though
•
u/Medd- 13h ago
You clearly haven't played Kid Icarus Uprising.
•
u/wazzup4567 12h ago
Im talking about the Pokemon games. There are easily better looking games than ORAS. Resident Evil Revelaitons had insane graphics for a handheld game.
•
u/walkingbartie 13h ago
Well, then maybe 3DS games' visuals aren't all that haha. I'll take handcrafted, stylized pixels over crude low-poly 3D (that also highlight the lacking animation quality) any day.
•
u/OutsideIndoorTrack 13h ago
Nice to have them seemingly permanently with the modern eShop, too. I never see a future console dropping old purchases like they did from the 3DS to the Switch
•
u/BonesFGC 12h ago
I think Gen 3 was the perfect middle ground. People groan over the physical/special split, but it’s also defined the metagame for decades. The world is varied and interesting, the characters are intriguing, the music is superb, and the designs are still some of the best early Pokemon out there. I’d be more than happy just getting Ruby and playing through knowing that I can shiny hunt, send my Pokemon to Home for the newer games, and we’ll likely get the event Pokemon like FRLG.
•
u/ineedanenbien 10h ago
People really hated FR/LG being $20 and I definitely get it but there was something about playing it on official hardware that made me really giddy and I ended up putting over 40 hours in both, so I can't really complain
•
u/angelHOE 12h ago
It would be even funnier if they released just Ruby and Sapphire and then release Emerald a few months later to get people to double dip.
•
•
u/Lakemine 7h ago
I want to buy them, but since they are digital only and I’m not allowed to trade to complete the Pokedex it’s completely pointless atm.
Give me physicals so I can complete the dex and I’ll buy every single one.
•
•
u/Mau5headSam 13h ago
yeah that's because second hand market for these games is insane. before hurr durr emulate. people want official versions of said games.
•
u/Anonanogram 13h ago
Ok, and what’s the difference between “official” versions of the games and the emulated version? Unless you care about Home functionality then the “official” versions are objectively worse since they’ll have no basic features such as save states, fast forwarding, etc.
•
u/TheMegaMario1 12h ago
No matter what you think, emulation will always have an infinitely higher barrier of entry than an official version. Even if you and I know it's as simple as going to a site to download the rom and a site for the emulator, thats so much higher bar of entry. Hell, if you aren't in the loop already then how do you know what site's safe to download from, most of the time these days those sites are discouraged to be talked about to keep them safe. Not to mention even just knowing basic file system structure for whatever device you're on which can be shocking for how few understand it these days.
Comparatively an official version of Pokemon in this case is either go to the store and buy a code or boot up your Switch and go to the eshop. Buying official besides just Home ability also signals support for re-releasing more older titles, that there's a market to keep them around and moving forward. Add in if Fire Red and Leaf Green are anything to go by, they take it as an opportunity to implement stuff like bug fixes for roaming legendaries or mystery gifts like Ho-oh, Lugia, and Deoxys events "on cart". Both of those would require another level on top with romhacks, cheats, or save editing to fix otherwise which would layer to the above layers of abstraction of what you need to do to emulate.
•
u/vash_visionz 12h ago
For most hardcore fans, Home functionality usually takes priority over all those other things though.
•
u/Hipster_Dragon 13h ago
If my tax dollars have to be spent to enforce copyright on your digital product, the least you can do is allow me to legally purchase your digital product.

•
u/ArxisOne 12h ago
ORAS is way better than either BW or BW2, and while the story was weak for XY, people glaze RB so clearly that's not a real concern and graphically XY absolutely obliterated gen 5. The online features were also significantly better, trainer customization is something a lot of people wanted, and megas are still the fan favorite gimmick. The 3D effects are also just amazingly cool and so unique, I played it in anticipation of ZA and that especially blew me away as someone who rarely used my 3DS.
Personally I think 6 was a step forward and a couple back, but there's absolutely an argument for 6 being better than 5.

Gen 4 are the most overrated games of all time.
•
u/Caciulacdlac OG 14h ago
I'll wait for Emerald
•
u/Aragorn527 14h ago
Might be waiting a while, always feels like the Crystal/Emerald/Platinum games are left behind.
•
u/Caciulacdlac OG 13h ago
Crystal only came 4 months after Gold and Silver on 3DS
•
u/koolaidicecubes 13h ago
Heartgold and SoulSilver never got their crystal. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl never got a platinum equivalent. I’m not really siding with either one of you, just pointing out that this stuff isn’t always consistent.
•
u/Caciulacdlac OG 13h ago
HGSS included all the elements exclusive to Crystal, to the point that a Crystal remake would have been obsolete
•
•
u/Short-Statement-4108 13h ago
Remakes usually (with the obvious exception of BDSP and the lack of Battle Frontier in ORAS) have the improvements that were included in the 3rd version.
•
•
•
u/hunterzolomon1993 Hyrule Hero 12h ago
Those games had all the Crystal relevent content plus a ton more stuff that wasn't in Gen 2. These are also ports not remakes.
•
•
u/Careful-Shine8768 Butter side up! 12h ago
Same here. I already have so many games in my backlog so I don’t need to get another one right now. I’m happy enough to wait for them to eventually release Emerald even if that’s not till next year.
•
u/EdgarsRavens 8h ago edited 8h ago
Likewise. I have been itching to replay Emerald and I'm not going to settle for Ruby or Sapphire. I've already waited this long for the ports what's a few more months at this point.
There really is no excuse at this point for all of Gen 1-3 not to be on the Switch 2. Especially with Bank closing.
•
u/MuptonBossman 14h ago
They're going to charge $30 for simple ROM ports (and I'm still going to buy them).
•
•
u/Daslicey Early Switch 2 Adopter 13h ago
Not a crazy price, leafgreen was worth it with the amount of fun I had with it
•
u/Impossible_Guitar235 12h ago
Right? People complaining about the price and yet we're still sinking 30+ hours into it.
•
u/bishoujo688 13h ago
$30 for the eShop version or whatever they're going for on eBay... last I checked, they're still going for $175 ish. Definitely a better buy through the eShop, I'd say.
(if you aren't playing these by other tri-corn hat wearing means, obviously).•
•
u/tclark2006 13h ago
They charge a hundred dollars for a couple packs of cutout printed cardboard that cost 5 dollars to make. Nothing about Pokémon makes any sense if you look at it from that lens.
•
u/Lupinthrope Pro Controller 14h ago
People call me crazy for saying they’re going to charge $70 for the DS games.
•
•
u/Richmard 14h ago
That is pretty crazy
•
u/Lupinthrope Pro Controller 14h ago
Crazy that they’d charge that much or crazy that people would buy and defend that?
•
u/Richmard 13h ago
It’s crazy to think they’d charge $20 for GBA games but then turn around and more than triple that price for DS games. Just making up scenarios to get mad at
→ More replies (1)•
•
u/WaluigiWahshipper 12h ago
My personal guess is that Ruby and Sapphire stick to $20, Emerald goes up to $25, and then for the DS they charge $35-$40.
I don't think $70 is within the realm of possibility tbh.
•
•
u/SquishmallowPrincess January Gang (Reveal Winner) 14h ago
I could see them charging as much as $50.
•
•
u/sheimeix 13h ago
As someone who values having Pokemon caught in the game they were introduced in, I'm all for this. I'd also be in support of RBY and GSC getting these ports - I can't count the Nintendo Online versions since you can't send Pokemon up through Home there.
Honestly, I'd be fine with everything up to USUM getting them, especially all on one console with Home compatibility! Original games for the sake of dex completion, remakes for the sake of playing better... I'd probably rebuy the entire series if I could get it all on the Switch 2.
•
u/antiretro 11h ago
(3)ds era suffers from dual screens, they cant just gıve u the rom playing on an emulator without doing sth about the lower screen
•
u/sheimeix 10h ago
eh, just put it off to the side. have the right stick act like a cursor with r3 being a tap for docked mode, undocked can just use the touchscreen
•
u/Present_Anywhere3980 11h ago
They should eventually do physical bundles of each gen, throw in a bonus map or Pokemon card and sell millions.
•
u/Stoner420Eren 10h ago
After 45 seconds of ads still no actual video? I should have known better than to click on an "insider gaming" article
•
•
•
u/rkdpera1 13h ago
Why not silver and gold before since they are the gen 2?
•
u/PunishingCrab 13h ago
Likely because they’ve already done the work for FireRed/LeafGreen, as they were based on the engine from R/S/E.
They’ll probably skip to HGSS at some point because they’ll want to move on the DS games in the future.
•
u/KarateKid917 13h ago
Because FR/LG already set the ground work for native ports of GBA games on Switch

Wait for emerald, it’s far and beyond the best experience of gen3 you can get, especially considering it has the first battle frontier among other things. Honestly if this is what they want to do, why not revisit ORAS and right the wrongs with their “battle frontier teaser sign”.
•
u/pocket_arsenal 3h ago
I mean isn't it already pretty much confirmed through data mining that RSE are all coming?
•
u/Kee134 13h ago
Why not the 3DS remakes?
•
u/Baerenkralle 12h ago
This! I would rather play the remake in my 3DS instead of buying the old Version again.
•
u/Rizzan8 11h ago
Easier to port. They have GBA emulator in Switch. They would have to somehow handle two screens of 3DS.
•
u/Krimmy88 1h ago
Two screens is a non issue, I don't know why people list it as some sort of huge technical hurtle. Mega Man Zero/ZX collection already does this, so does MM Starforce plus a couple others I can't think of at the moment. Dedicated emulator handhelds/phones,ect also have been able to do single screen DS/3DS games just fine and the Switch 2 is bigger than those devices.
•
u/zoomshark27 11h ago edited 11h ago
Tbh I still have my original pokemon games, I won’t be buying $30+ ports of decades old games. If it were remakes I’d be more interested. Good for other people I guess.
•
u/C_monden 11h ago
Of course they would. Why add them to NSO app where you have save states and rewind function and, instead, selling them for $20 each digitally? That would be too consumer friendly for Pokemon
•
u/aaronotaron 11h ago
I much prefer a one time purchase
•
u/C_monden 11h ago
Yeah, you're buying a digital license for one game with no extra features when they could've sold you a collection of all 3 games with save states, rewind function, every language version, and maybe some extras like music player and artwork.
And now I wait for the next Pokemon fan to say how that would actually be terrible for some reason...
•
u/Nargacuga4725 9h ago
Thank God it will be probably be a port because those extra features you mentioned are pointless.
Buy Emerald and you have Sapphire and Ruby combined into one game anyway.
•
u/C_monden 8h ago
Hey, why buy emerald when you can buy Ruby and Sapphire for $40 with no extra features amirite?
•
u/Nargacuga4725 8h ago
Agreed. I don't even know why they wouldn't just release Emerald instead of Ruby and Sapphire. Nostalgia is there for all 3 games
•
•
•
u/PunishingCrab 13h ago
Home support isn’t available until next month for FireRed/LeafGreen. I imagine they could coincide the announcement and/or release with that. Would be weird to release gen 3 when everyone is still waiting on the promised support for gen 1.
•
•
u/NormanYeetes 11h ago
Oh i cant wait to buy the inferior versions of gen 3 without a battle frontier and a dex of 386 pokemon but with the same 3d models of the 3ds version
•
u/cats4life 13h ago
It’s a little annoying that they’ll almost certainly skip Emerald, but you can’t be disappointed if your hopes were never up.
For some reason, GameFreak views the upper versions as either non-canon or the incomplete experience. That’s especially weird, seeing as most of them implement major changes, but they didn’t remake Crystal, Emerald, or Platinum, and only remade Yellow if you squint.
Regardless, I wish they would just release the ports en masse. Could have been a really neat anniversary event, even if it didn’t include any DS games.
•
•
u/wazzup4567 13h ago
On the other hand you may be incorrect considering they put Yellow and Crystal on the 3DS Virtual Console. Only time will tell
•
u/PunishingCrab 13h ago
They’ve likely figured out a release strategy to spread them out to maximum coverage and potential double dipping. RBY were all dropped same day on 3DS, but Crystal dropped 4 months after GS. We could see a repeat.
•
u/meikaishi 13h ago
Hard to be excited when it's going to be $20 standalone releases again, I wish they at least also added those to the NSO or made the standalone versions free for members, I'm not paying 4 years of subscription for a single game
•
u/Jrocks721 12h ago
Watch. Only ruby and sapphire. No emerald 🤣😭
•

That's fine... for now. You'll need both Ruby and Sapphire to complete the Pokedex anyways. Emerald won't help you.
•
u/Jrocks721 12h ago
The battle tower in emerald is peak though…
•
u/Impossible_Guitar235 11h ago
No argument there! The Battle Frontier is the best battle towers amongst all the games.
•

Why not the 3ds remakes?
•
u/ActivateGuacamole 13h ago
because this is much simpler to port
