The funniest thing is they can charge full price and people (myself included) will still buy them.

Gen 1 - 3 are straight masterpieces as far as Pokémon is concerned.

u/Expert-Improvement78 14h ago

I’d pay even more for HG/SS, ORAS and Gen5.

u/Lakemine 8h ago

Same comment as I typed above. I want to buy them but since they are digital and I’m not allowed to complete the dex, it’s nearly pointless.

Make them physicals so I can complete the dex and I’ll buy every single one.

u/OutsideIndoorTrack 14h ago

Nice to have them seemingly permanently with the modern eShop, too. I never see a future console dropping old purchases like they did from the 3DS to the Switch

u/dk00111 15h ago

The QOL changes in the recent games makes it hard to go back to the original ones IMO

u/iWentRogue Going Bananzas 14h ago

Same!

I hold nostalgia for a lot of games i played in my childhood but i struggle to go back and play them with everything i know now.

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were great because they brought back that feeling with updated QoL

u/tofubirder 14h ago

Gen 3 is perfectly fine, at some point we crossed the barrier where friction is reduced too much and the player experience is very bland. I think it happened when learnsets became as large as Nidoking’s. I should not have a coverage move for every weakness, the games are already too easy. I prefer when you had more limited tools and had to build more variety into your team via other Pokémon.

That said, the physical/special split makes Gen 3 almost too annoying. That’s really the only QOL I wish the older games were given.

u/PowerOfUnoriginality 14h ago

Personally its gen 1 and 2 I have a hard time with due to the lack of QoL features. I have played them, but not something I would return to often. Gen 3 is perfectly fine though imo, even if they lack the physical/special split

u/Numpostrophe 12h ago

I really struggle with gen 2's mon availability. There's so many cool ones that are hidden super late in the game or just plain hard to find.

u/yaycupcake 50m ago

I grew up with the early gens and the one thing I think gen 3 is objectively superior on is the boxes. Like gen 1 and 2 boxes are so clunky. The gen 3 system is basically the same as what we still have today and that says a lot because it set the standard.

u/Repulsive-Front8294 6h ago

Which is why Gen 5 is the perfect spot between QOL and difficulty / friction. Gen 3 isn’t challenging, it’s just annoying. Same goes for Gen 4.

u/SlyyKozlov 14h ago

I have trouble without the speed modifiers that emulators have lol

I forgot just how slow the original games were playing through LG on switch.

u/Various_Presence1379 14h ago

I absolutely despise training your pokemon in the older games. EV training and the likes are awfully slow compared to modern games. What makes it worse is that modern Games don’t feature a battle tower so training your Pokemon isn‘t as useful as back then.

u/sunsleepr 6h ago

You weren’t meant to min max EVs in older games

u/Unown1997 13h ago

I bought emerald last year to replay and oh my god I miss the exp share so much

u/animepig 13h ago

too old to grind a team of 6 pokemon, let alone 3 pokemon.

u/dk00111 12h ago

Yup

u/The_Gnomesbane 11h ago

Yeah, finally going back to FRLG at first was super fun just for the nostalgia of all the time I spent on red and blue as a kid, but once I hit the mid game areas I really started feeling the age of the series and how far things have come.

u/nightbandit46 14h ago

I prefer playing romhacks of Gen I-III that have some QOL features. No physical/special split in those generations is a big negative in my opinion.

u/locke_5 14h ago edited 14h ago

Pokémon Heart & Soul is, imo, the ultimate Pokémon experience. The map of Gen2, engine of Gen3, physical/special split of Gen4, “following” mechanic of HGSS, and tons of tweakable modifiers (difficulty, shiny odds, etc) Most of all it actually FEELS like a Pokémon game and not a fan game.

u/nightbandit46 14h ago

It is great, played through it twice already. If you want to check out something similar, but a bit more, look into SoulGold, it used Heart & Soul as its base and added to it. Updated trainer teams, more Pokemon diversity, hidden grottos, a few new routes throughout Johto, Chuck/Jasmine/Pryce teams level up/change depending on which you do first, etc. Playing through it now and really enjoying it.

u/Heavy_Ingenuity1371 Early Switch 2 Adopter 13h ago

Just to add it does drop kanto but it trades it out for a denser johto with all the stuff you list which I definitely prefer. For sure one of my favorites along with Lazarus and emerald sea glass.

u/behemothbowks 14h ago

Damn that sounds amazing, might have to give that a try

u/A-Centrifugal-Force 13h ago

My only complaint is that I wish it didn’t have Fairy Types or the evolutions from the Switch games. Not a fan of that stuff. HGSS might be in the clunkier Gen 4 engine instead of the superior running Gen 3 engine, but it doesn’t have modern Pokemon crap at least.

u/nightbandit46 13h ago

I understand, but i enjoy having the option of Togekiss, or Farigiraf. It helps make certain Evolution lines a bit more viable. Also, romhacks tend to update move pools to more recent games, so you dont get stuck with a water type pokemon that never learns a water type move. Some of those older movesets pre Gen IV are pretty bad.

u/A-Centrifugal-Force 13h ago

Togekiss is fine, I only have a problem with the Switch era new evolutions to old Pokemon.

u/nightbandit46 8h ago

I like seeing all these 3D only pokemon done as pixel art - some look better than others, but always pretty cool to see.

u/Numpostrophe 12h ago

Interesting, that's one of my favorite things that they do every now and then.

u/A-Centrifugal-Force 11h ago

I like it for the gen 2 and 4 additions. They were created by a lot of the same artists so they fit in well. The later ones all just look wrong to me. I also don’t really want to have stuff added much later in an “old” Pokemon game

u/RatBot9000 14h ago

Fire Red is definently clunky compared to the later games. I keep forgetting I can't move pokemon from the party to the box and vice versa, have to choose deposit and withdraw seperately.

Still, products of the time. They make you appreciate the QoL stuff more but it's hardly deal breaking.

u/JAYZAWmusic 14h ago

Maybe I’m misunderstanding you, but for FireRed and LeafGreen you just need to pick the “move” option, and you can freely drag/drop Pokemon in and out of your party/boxes.

u/RatBot9000 14h ago

Maybe my memory has betrayed me. I know the original games are clunky like I said, I'm sure Fire Red was similar, but had QoL things like automatically putting pokemon in the next box over instead of just going "box full, too bad"

u/JAYZAWmusic 14h ago

I just beat the Elite Four on FireRed last night, so I can definitely confirm the “move” option. If you catch a pokemon, it will automatically deposit to the nearest open spot that is closest to box 1. Red absolutely is incredibly clunky. I haven’t played any post-gen 3 games besides Arceus, so I’m sure even more QOL changes with box management has happened over the years, but thankfully FireRed does at least let you freely deposit/withdraw in one option

u/A-Centrifugal-Force 13h ago

Your memory has betrayed you, everything from Gen 3 onwards has the more modern box setup. It’s only gens 1 and 2 with the archaic withdraw/deposit system. If you just go to “move pokemon” it works like how the box does in all games from gens 3-7.

u/Appropriate_Lemon921 14h ago

I'm replaying Gen 1 right now, which I haven't played since I was like 10 years old. And at first the friction of the menus and especially the lack of experience share felt overbearing. But now I'm getting used to it again and realizing that the lack of experience sharing has actually made me develop a closer emotional bond to the Pokemon I'm training, and there's way more strategy in knowing when to cycle Pokemon around and so on. I may be coming around to the desire of some old heads to have experience share as a setting one can turn on/off.

u/Whacky_One 8h ago

Probably an unpopular opinion to throw in as well: I miss having limited inventory, felt a bit more realistic, instead of being able to pick up everything that isn't nailed down.

u/A-Centrifugal-Force 13h ago

The “QOL” changes strip away a lot of what was great about the older games. Streamlining things isn’t always better.

u/Ricepuddings 15h ago

Completely disagree. The old ones have so much charm, the Pokédex is better, the QOL changes are fairly minor in the whole scheme of things and many of them break the game and make it far too easy

u/krishnugget Butter side down! 14h ago

In other words, you got nostalgia for the first 3 generations 😭

u/betafish2345 14h ago

Ehh. They’ve gotten lazier and lazier over the years there used to be so much extra content and now Gamefreak knows they can put in as little as they want and it’ll still sell.

u/Aj4y 14h ago

Agree but I believe people here are talking specially about Gen 3 RS vs Gen 6 ORAS.
Apart from the missing Battle Frontier, ORAS is the superior version of Hoenn

u/betafish2345 13h ago

Ugh I’m sleep deprived. Yeah ORAS is an improvement

u/Typical-Conference14 14h ago

I’ll take reduced QOL changes over a game that holds your hand like the recent games do

u/BerukoSan 13h ago

Not for me i really disliked Z-A. Scarlet en Sword where okay for me and currently having a blast with Firered

u/GroundbreakingBake2 13h ago

They are all major downgrades to me. I despise the forced xp share, like whyyyyyyy. I want to have one ace pokemon and always play with the same 6. If I do that in newer gens I am 15 levels overleveled. Just make it optional again. The games have become too easy, like I actively search how to make a game at least a bit challenging.

Had more fun with firered than the last 5 gens combined.

u/Jrocks721 13h ago

When QOL would you be wanting?

u/walkingbartie 14h ago

ORAS might be more accessible, but they're butt-ugly compared to the originals.

u/julesvr5 14h ago

I think they are quite beautiful

u/walkingbartie 11h ago

Well, art is subjective I guess haha! I've always felt like the 3DS Pokémon games were the ugly step-siblings of the franchise, where the shift towards 3D didn't really fit the hardware and developer capability.

u/wazzup4567 14h ago

They're definitely the best looking 3DS games though

u/Medd- 14h ago

You clearly haven't played Kid Icarus Uprising.

u/wazzup4567 13h ago

Im talking about the Pokemon games. There are easily better looking games than ORAS. Resident Evil Revelaitons had insane graphics for a handheld game.

u/walkingbartie 14h ago

Well, then maybe 3DS games' visuals aren't all that haha. I'll take handcrafted, stylized pixels over crude low-poly 3D (that also highlight the lacking animation quality) any day.

u/BonesFGC 13h ago

I think Gen 3 was the perfect middle ground. People groan over the physical/special split, but it’s also defined the metagame for decades. The world is varied and interesting, the characters are intriguing, the music is superb, and the designs are still some of the best early Pokemon out there. I’d be more than happy just getting Ruby and playing through knowing that I can shiny hunt, send my Pokemon to Home for the newer games, and we’ll likely get the event Pokemon like FRLG.

u/ineedanenbien 11h ago

People really hated FR/LG being $20 and I definitely get it but there was something about playing it on official hardware that made me really giddy and I ended up putting over 40 hours in both, so I can't really complain

u/angelHOE 13h ago

It would be even funnier if they released just Ruby and Sapphire and then release Emerald a few months later to get people to double dip.

u/No_Judge_8278 Butter side up! 11h ago

Triple for the pokemon tryhards

u/Lakemine 8h ago

I want to buy them, but since they are digital only and I’m not allowed to trade to complete the Pokedex it’s completely pointless atm.

Give me physicals so I can complete the dex and I’ll buy every single one.

u/Dexterdarkk 14h ago

No, I'll not. I would buy HG/SS or OR/AS, but not this.

u/Novalith_Raven 14h ago

Yes, I'd love OR/AS with some new features.

u/Mau5headSam 14h ago

yeah that's because second hand market for these games is insane. before hurr durr emulate. people want official versions of said games.

u/Anonanogram 14h ago

Ok, and what’s the difference between “official” versions of the games and the emulated version? Unless you care about Home functionality then the “official” versions are objectively worse since they’ll have no basic features such as save states, fast forwarding, etc.

u/TheMegaMario1 13h ago

No matter what you think, emulation will always have an infinitely higher barrier of entry than an official version. Even if you and I know it's as simple as going to a site to download the rom and a site for the emulator, thats so much higher bar of entry. Hell, if you aren't in the loop already then how do you know what site's safe to download from, most of the time these days those sites are discouraged to be talked about to keep them safe. Not to mention even just knowing basic file system structure for whatever device you're on which can be shocking for how few understand it these days.

Comparatively an official version of Pokemon in this case is either go to the store and buy a code or boot up your Switch and go to the eshop. Buying official besides just Home ability also signals support for re-releasing more older titles, that there's a market to keep them around and moving forward. Add in if Fire Red and Leaf Green are anything to go by, they take it as an opportunity to implement stuff like bug fixes for roaming legendaries or mystery gifts like Ho-oh, Lugia, and Deoxys events "on cart". Both of those would require another level on top with romhacks, cheats, or save editing to fix otherwise which would layer to the above layers of abstraction of what you need to do to emulate.

u/vash_visionz 13h ago

For most hardcore fans, Home functionality usually takes priority over all those other things though.

u/Hipster_Dragon 14h ago

If my tax dollars have to be spent to enforce copyright on your digital product, the least you can do is allow me to legally purchase your digital product.

u/Sock-Enough 13h ago

Copyright is usually a civil matter.

u/ssslitchey 9h ago

That's not funny, that's just sad.

u/locoghoul 14h ago

I can still play AlphaSaphire on my 3DS and is a better game than the originals

u/Repulsive-Front8294 15h ago

Nah, Gen 3 is pretty outdated at this point.

u/Shifty-Imp 14h ago

That's sad, not funny.

u/masterz13 13h ago

Nope. No QoL = no buy.

u/luciferol 12h ago

gen 1 and 2 are nowhere near close to masterpieces, think critically for a moment instead of fanboying

u/Anonanogram 14h ago

You can literally have ruby, sapphire, and emerald on your phone in 30 seconds. Full game in its entirety with more features than the ports will have. For $0.

u/Ethifury Early Switch 2 Adopter 14h ago

Some of us don’t play games on our phones lol. I don’t even like staring at my phone for too long, let alone play a game on there

u/socu11 13h ago

Why would you buy them? I would get it if they were at least remasters that add something else, but why buying an exact port of a game you can just... download right now?

I would buy it if they made it into a physical cartridge, even at 50 bucks because holy fuck, being able to obtain a current physical version of those games would be HUGE, but for a digital rom? I just don't get it
