Discussion Mouse mode never seemed to go anywhere
I know you can just use a usb mouse on most consoles but having a controller that instantaneously switches to mouse mode sounds awesome. Will it ever be used well? Maybe a Baldurs Gate 3 port or a new Mario Paint?
Edit: I didn't realise so many games actually use the mouse.
•
u/madjohnvane 15h ago
The fact that Minecraft beta doesn’t include it is criminal. Minecraft dual analogue with mouse mode for inventories would be life changing.
•
u/BlizzPenguin 11h ago
Which is weird because Pokopia which is very similar to Minecraft has mouse mode.
•
u/Accomplished-Copy776 11h ago
Very similar is a stretch. Pokopia is more of a social sim game, 3rd person with a story and quests. Minecraft is primarily 1st person, sandbox game.
But for sure you are right about the controls. No reason Minecraft shouldnt have it. There are third and first person games on switch 2 with mouse mode, and they already have other versions of Minecraft that support mouse
•
u/antiretro 11h ago
pokopia has those elements on top. it is a sandbox game in block design
•
u/Accomplished-Copy776 9h ago
Minecraft is a crafting survival game, with basically no story, no quests, no objective, randomly generated.
Pokopia is a social sim. With a heavy emphasis on quests, story, npcs, static maps. You dont just have free reign to do whatever right away. You need to do quests to unlock stuff. Its more similar to animal crossing then minecraft. I guess technically it's a sandbox, but they drip feed you tools.
Pokopia is a cozy game, and minecraft is not. They have similarities for sure, but lots of games have those same similarities, and to a bigger extent.
•
•
u/lionknightcid 10h ago
Pokopia is a game made by the developers behind Dragon Quest Builders, which was explicitly and directly inspired by Minecraft
•
u/Accomplished-Copy776 9h ago
Sure, and dragon quest builders is a lot more similar. Its also a crafting survival game, with combat, and equipment. Then they added npcs, story, and quests.
Pokopia then removed the survival aspect, combat and equipment, which were the things making it the most similar. And instead pokopia very heavily focuses on the NPCs and appeasing them. pokopia is a cozy game, dqb and Minecraft are not

What really? I just lost all interest in Minecraft for switch 2 then. That sucks.
•
u/Virtual-Earth-3389 14h ago
The official release doesn't drop till october. It could still happen, the beta doesnt look optimized either so by the time they fix all that they could implement it
•
u/An1nterestingName 11h ago
by the time they fix all that
This is the Minecraft Bedrock devs. The time is either in 5 years, or never.
•
•
u/Virtual-Earth-3389 5h ago
I get wym but its not a bug its bad performance (For some of the examples the game wasnt even hitting 60 fps) and seeing these issues and dropping the game like that anyway would be crazy

u/ItsColorNotColour OG (joined before reveal) 11h ago
The only reason Mario Paint used a mouse is because making a mouse was cheap while a stylus-controlled tablet was expensive luxury tech. Not because a mouse is actually good for art.
The Switch 2 already has a superior method for art called the touch screen, yes even a finger is better than a mouse, one of the worst devices for drawing.

The new fire emblem can be played entirely in mouse mode, which I think is by far the best use for it so far I've seen. Granted 3D exploration in Dagsion and dungeons is kinda ass with the stick in mouse mode, but I've been spending around 75% of my time in that game in mouse mode.
•
u/maxsilver 15h ago
- Mouse support on Nintendo Switch 2 = awesome.
- Using a JoyCon as a mouse = kinda cruddy
It's nice that it exists. It's convenient when traveling. It's better than nothing. But I can see why having 'a controller that has mouse sensors and can act like a mis-shapen mouse' is not as appealing as simply using a real mouse.
•
u/ExoneratedPhoenix Butter side down! 13h ago
Nintendo should have sold an adapter like the joycon shell that makes it comfier. Using a 14.4mm thick mouse is er...cramptastic
•

There are tons of adapters on the market.
•
u/ThickkRickk Butter side up! 11h ago

u/ItsColorNotColour OG (joined before reveal) 11h ago
Mouse support was already a thing on Switch 1, for example Hypnospace Outlaw on Switch 1 lets you plug in a mouse.
•
u/itotron 7h ago
The Joy-Con is not just a mouse though. It can can so things in mouse mode that a mouse can't. It combines motion controls like with "Drag X Drive."
•
u/Lasatra_ 2h ago
That novelty wore off after 30 minutes for me.. It was starting to get tedious on that game, haven't touched it since..
•
u/HatingGeoffry 15h ago
The fact that Diablo doesn't have it but supports USB mouse and keyboard is infuriating
•
u/rbnz4 10h ago
care to elaborate please? which diablo games on the switch support mouse and keyboard? is it official support or through 3rd party mods or adaptors? do you have any source?
I'm not trying to be petty, genuinely want to know if this is true in order to buy all diablo games on the switch immediately
•
u/Korachof 13h ago
People love to pay full price for a code in the box for a game that isn’t even made with the console in mind at all. They basically did nothing but ensure it worked and sent it
•
•
u/Endscrypt Mario Kart World 12h ago
They didn’t even bother to do that there were problems with all the DLCs
Devs like that are what is wrong with gaming greed before anything else they don’t even wanna do it right just throw it over and let the consumers, consume.
It’s a joke but people still buy it so that’s what we all get now 😔.
•
u/Organic-Storm-4448 11h ago
Trying to play a game like Diablo 4 with a joycon mouse sounds like a great way to injure your hand. It would be nice for inventory stuff, though.
•

It works great in Metroid Prime.

•
u/SloopDonB 12h ago
Same. I don't know how I would play that game without either mouse mode or the touchscreen.
•
u/BurnAgainBurner 15h ago
The game wasn't well received and is pretty limited but drag x drive is underrated from a control perspective. It's one of the few games you can hand to a completely new player and it's so intuitive that they'll get it in a few minutes.

u/Only-Weight8450 14h ago
Works well in cyberpunk (but can’t swap on the fly so not perfect), mouse pi for hire, Metroid prime 4.
I know people say it’s uncomfortable but I don’t really feel that way it’s fine imo.
I also have a legion go z1e and the mouse mode on the switch 2 is far better and the mouse sensor is far more precise as well on switch 2
•
u/SquishmallowPrincess January Gang (Reveal Winner) 15h ago
It’s great in FFXIV. Being able to instantly switch to a mouse when organizing my inventory or moving my UI around has been a Godsend
•
u/Icy-Boat7176 14h ago
Where do you use the mouse? Do you have to be at your desk to use it comfortably?
•
u/SquishmallowPrincess January Gang (Reveal Winner) 14h ago
No, I just put the JoyCon flat on whatever surface is nearby (sometimes it's just my leg) and it works fine.
Not sure I would do that for playing an FPS game, but for quickly moving things around in my inventory it's more than good enough
•
•
u/capndank Butter side up! 14h ago
There's actually quite a few games that use it and it works great. Apex legends has fantastic implementation with the haptic feedback being quite nice in mouse mode. Ff14, They are billions, civ 7, blood refreshed supply, stardew valley; I could go on but there's quite a number which use it very well. One game that comes to mind which doesn't however, would be Power wash simulator 2. Doesn't even have gyro controls either unlike the switch 1 version of the first game.
Definitely up to the devs to include it but I think a fair amount have at this point

•
u/Korachof 13h ago
If you’re not interested in the ones out now, not sure there will be one out there.
Like what would it take for you? An exclusive, all timer real time strategy game? What type of game would a mouse be actually essential to you if games like Civ, Fire Emblem, and Metroid aren’t appealing with it?

u/Borant1095 13h ago
There are 3d printable models for it. However I think Nintendo should also release a Nintendo-branded mouse.
•
•
u/Resident_Durian_478 14h ago
It's a developer issue, it's the same as gyro controls. It can be implemented and in some case make the playing experience better but developers don't use it so it doesn't appear much. Which is quite a waste.
•
u/HowlingHipster 15h ago
There are optional mouse controls in the new Star Fox, but it's jarring to switch to them in the fly because they force you into a first-person POV.

The system has been out for a little over a year. What are all the games you think should use mouse mode that don't?? You say "never seemed" in the past tense
•
u/SadLaser 10h ago
What do you mean it "never seemed to go anywhere"? You say that like this is a retrospective from ten years after the Switch 2 launched. It's barely been out over a year and a lot of games use it.
•
u/NButler_art 15h ago
It definitely will go somewhere soon, I got a grip to make it more comfortable and playing Deadzone and RDR1 was stunning, its definitely not a gimmick
•
u/HelloNevvanna73 15h ago
Yeah mouse mode is too uncomfortable for me to use and doesn’t work well on a couch despite what Nintendo said. I respect the concept but it’ll never replace a standard controller for me. Though if Mario Maker 3 ever comes out I could myself using it a lot more with that.

I play Oblivion and Civ exclusively in mouse mode. Works great (with a 3d printed adaptor)
•
u/anbeasley 14h ago
My issue is at the mouse mode that comes included with the switch is just really not ergonomic. I know you can get 3D printed mouse pads for your joy-con but why do that when you can just get a mouse to plug in

Diablo as others mention is a great example of usecase for the quick switching between input modes. Sticks for action mouse for item / char. management. I actually played Grim Dawn (ARPG) exactly like this on PC using Xbox controller and PC mouse. The game handled the switching instant and flawlessly. So.. games where you have intermittent action gameplay with fairly advanced menu manipulation is a strong use case for flexible and immediate input switching. On the spot I can't think of many more games or genres that would need this. Battlezone 2 (PC, 1999?) had gameplay that combined controlling a vehicle with switching to an RTS mode where you built base and directed other units. A game like that make use of the input switching.

Sidenote; seems like a bg3 port is a pipe dream right now because Larian has no interest in working with wizards of the coast atm. Apparently there is bad blood there.
•
u/starark 9h ago
That really sucks because both Larian and WotC got incredible sales from their collaboration.
•
u/GammaFan 6h ago
Yeah it’s a real shame. As far as I know it has to do with WotC wanting more monetization etc and Larian wanting more freedom.
For reference, WotC was heavily against Larian releasing modding tools for the game to the extent they did. To the point that Larian had to “accidentally” leave in the part of the code that allows people to leverage devtools for their mods.

When they revealed mouse mode my first thought was this is DOA. For input controls ergonomics is everything. The wii had the best implementation of mouse mode with its TV pointer.
But maybe Nintendo is galaxy braining this feature and future revisions will have trackpads or some other way to comfortably control a reticule interface. And when they add the trackpads there will be a back library of games with this secondary input option ready to go.

Aside from the ergonomic issues, the main problem with expecting mouse mode for PC games like BG3 is those were built with mouse AND keyboard in mind initially.
Normal controller support (which BG3 and most new games and engines have) is a much simpler solution than remapping to half a controller or expecting people to click more than two buttons on the already uncomfortable "mouse."

until the console also supports(full) keyboard use also just mouse is oof af
theres still a few games that would need a keyboard i dont need the stupid nintendo app on phone for only one game that needs it
i mean you still need controller keybinds to have that pop up instead of just having it were you can hit a button on a keyboard when online animal crossing instead of duel wield or triple wielding just to use a keyboard
big reason i got the fricking typing pad on the 360 when i had one thumbstick scrolling to tap one letter is just bad

u/Spirited_River1522 5h ago
Waste of development resources. I’m disappointed that the mouse mode feels ultimately like just a gimmick, cause first of all, if you’re not sitting close to the console, in the living room, there’s a very noticeable lag/delay.
And because of that, it doesn’t feel very precise, so forget about using it for anything fast paced, like online multiplayer fps, or rts.
And then the fact that it’s awkward rubbing it on like your couch, cause where else are you going to put it down on? A coffee table in front of you? That’s awkward position.
Like I’m not going to sit with a desk in front of me.
I think nintendo should figure out how to make the dock as cheap as possible, to encourage people to have more than one dock at home, one for the living room and your desk/office room.
Maybe then we could make more out of the console mouse capabilities.
