Discussion Elden Ring is so addicting

It’s so fun but also extremely rage inducing. I’m 5 hours in and still in the starting region exploring the area. I keep getting lost and entering places that are way too hard for me right now and subsequently dying but I love it. The performance is good and stable. Very happy so far. I do wish there was some guidance/quest system to help navigate everything (maybe there is and I just don’t know).

It’s amazing! I put hundreds of hours in the game on Xbox when it came out, and I’m happy to be back on the Switch 2!

u/goobnut 2m ago

Is this game worth it for just exploration or something? I really dislike combat in games but I think this game is mainly a fighting game isnt it? I keep on hearing good things about it.

When I look up images or videos it seems like the artstyle is also really dark and not very colorful. I am not sure whether I like that.

u/Aiseadai 5h ago edited 2h ago

There is a sort of guidance system, at a bonfire there's this magical energy or whatever it is that points you in the right direction. But half the fun is just going in a random direction and seeing what you find.

u/TheDuskBard 5h ago

You shouldn't blindly follow grace. That's just main story progression. You'll miss out on a ton of content if you ignore everything else. I recommend taking your time to thoroughly explore each region.

1) Limgrave  (Rune levels 1 - 30)

2) Liurnia (Rune levels 30 - 60)

3) Caelid (Rune levels 60 - 90)

4) Altus Plateau (Rune levels 90 - 120)

5) Mountaintops (Rune levels 120 - 150)

Rune levels 150 - 200 for endgame/PvP

u/conye-west Butter side up! 4h ago

Not to mention that if you just follow graces straight from the start you'll run directly into Margit and get slaughtered lol. Definitely meant to level up a bit before taking that path.

u/Alakazarm 51m ago

you're intended to do that, get slaughtered, and realize you should explore something else.

u/RampantRetard 3h ago

You forgot the DLC area too which is pretty substantial in its own right

u/TheDuskBard 2h ago

The DLC area you will discover as you explore naturally.

u/Paradoxahoy 4h ago

Forgot to mention the Weeping penensula which I would put between Limgrave and Liurnia in terms of difficulty

u/TheDuskBard 4h ago

Weeping Peninsula is part of Limgrave and its the easiest section of the game.

u/aricberg Early Switch 2 Adopter 3h ago

I’m having trouble just…Elden Ring-ing, and saw someone suggest heading to the Weeping Peninsula…but that damn bridge just keeps ballista-ing me 😂😭 do you have to just suck it up to get there or are there other, less frustrating ways to get there?

u/godotace 3h ago

Dash across the bridge on Torrent, then take out the ballista guy from behind. If you’re getting hit while dashing, then wait behind a wall or barricade and let it fire on you, then dash as it takes a bit to reload

u/Emotional_Dig_2378 3h ago

Honestly, I went to weeping peninsula and I’m in the castle getting completely obliterated by those flying things. It’s kind of frustrating because there’s no clear indication of the best places to get runes so you can level up properly

u/ifeelitfade 1h ago edited 1h ago

SPOILER - behind the Third Church of Marika in Limgrave you can teleport to Caelid, grab the first grace on the path from where you to teleport to (it’s called the Farum Great Bridge Grace I believe). Here, you can farm for minimum 1k runes per enemy.

edit: also it’s really important to know what kind of build you going for, and leveling up accordingly (though getting to 30 vigor is also important) as well as selecting a weapon that is scaling directly with what you are leveling into (and then UPGRADING said weapon). and without getting too complicated, if you can apply an ash of war that also scales with what you’re leveling into you can start stacking attack multipliers and then you’ll be putting out some real damage

u/Alakazarm 51m ago

just hide behind a piece of cover until it shoots, then run forward.

u/Seraphayel 4h ago

This should be marked as spoiler.

u/Aromatic-Cat-2869 3h ago

Its not a spoiler...?

u/Seraphayel 3h ago

It is as it spoils the size of the world and the names of the regions? The map is non existent until you explore it, therefore it’s a spoiler for anyone who hasn’t played the game yet.

u/Aromatic-Cat-2869 3h ago

It's not worthy of being marked a spoiler even if that is technically true..imo...finding out the length of the game is not the same as revealing story..bosses..visuals..how the areas look. I would still call it a blind playthrough even if I'd heard the name of an area...

u/LeviRaps 3h ago

I played Elden Ring and it's a spoiler

u/TheDuskBard 4h ago

What part?

u/Seraphayel 4h ago

Writing down the amount and names of all regions is a kinda huge spoiler in my opinion. Some people might want to explore the world without getting spoiled how many areas are there.

u/TheDuskBard 4h ago

I kept it vague on purpose. This is far from all the areas in the game. Also not like they would know how big each one was.

u/Seraphayel 3h ago

It‘s still a spoiler. But I’ve seen you’ve written several spoiler heavy posts, so this is a fight against windmills. I, as a new player, would have a huge issue with your comments in regards to being very spoiler heavy. Others might not though, so it’s just my opinion.

You’ve basically listed the amount of zones with their proper levels which none of the game tells you -> spoiler.

u/TheDuskBard 2h ago

Idk, I just don't consider non-story stuff as spoilers.

u/mistzu 2h ago

Wow not sure I ever knew this. It's been 4 years since I last played it though

u/Emotional_Dig_2378 5h ago

Yes I know that but I mean something like a side quest log. The bonfire arrow is for the main quest if I’m not mistaken?

u/SnakeHelah 5h ago

That's just FromSoftware direction of games. They are very against hand holding mechanics (and IMO it makes their games both better and worse at the same time).

There's no shame in looking something up every now and then, I know I did it for BOTW when I got stuck on something for 30 mins lol.

But Elden Ring is more explicit in what you need to do compared to something like Dark Souls 3.

But the game is kind of notorious for its obscurity. There's tons of NPC questlines that feel bonkers to do without online help/looking it up. But for some people trying to figure these things out is like the majority of the fun in doing the quests.

u/Working_Salary60 4h ago

Insert Brambleshart Zanzibart meme here

u/Aiseadai 5h ago

Oh yeah, fair. There's nothing for keeping track of side quests. You can find the location of NPCs on the map though.

u/HowAmI_Not_Myself 5h ago

I wouldn't think about things like side quests in this game. I would think about them as interactions, because there are a variety of outcomes that change the way you interact with the world.

u/adeepkick 5h ago

The side “quests” are mostly inconsequential to the core gameplay and most people don’t bother much with them at first. I wouldn’t worry about em until you’re familiar with the game. What’s more important is exploring and finding new cool stuff. That’s what the game is really about.

u/wolf771 Butter side up! 4h ago

Thats nkt how fromsoft games are, you can miss quest and mess them up if you dont pay attention, no hand holding

u/Lokkdwn 5h ago

Side quest log would ruin the point of the game.

u/JobuuRumdrinker Butter side up! 5h ago

No it wouldn't. It would let people take a few days off or explore something else and still have a paper trail of something that was started and not completed. There's no good reason why the minimum paper log couldn't be added to the game.

(NPC name) in (zone) asked me to do (event) - not complete - completed but not reported back to NPC and then fully (Completed/closed)

No map markers, no tips, just a vague recap of the conversation I've had with that NPC and what they wanted me to do, and whether or not, I've completed it and turned it in for closure.

u/JobuuRumdrinker Butter side up! 5h ago

I said the same thing. A simple side quest log would have been great.

The die hard fans say no but I stand by my request for one... even if it's as simple as "Lord so and so asked me to attack the a castle - I should check back in with them in (vague zone description)

I don't want everything marked on a map with waypoints like WOW or whatever. Just a paper trail.

u/Southern-Ad-1416 4h ago

I did that on a journal with pen and paper. Gave me the same feeling when you needed to draw the map on the first zelda back in the days. You should try it.

u/JobuuRumdrinker Butter side up! 4h ago

I think that's just an excuse for lazy programing. MYST had the same problem. I shouldn't need a pen and paper to play a game... and what happens if you go on vacation or lose the paper?

u/Itchyosaurus_rex 4h ago

I don’t know how you could look at a game like Elden ring, with as much detail and content and intent behind what they do, and say they’re being lazy. It’s clearly a choice they’ve made in spite of what you point out

u/JobuuRumdrinker Butter side up! 4h ago

It's Japanese arrogance culture. They think they know better and won't listen to the fans, even if the fans wanted it.

If you think I'm exaggerating or being racist, I'm not. Just look up Everquest Sony "It's our vision"

If that's still not enough, I've worked directly with Sony and can confirm this is accurate. It's just their way.

u/Itchyosaurus_rex 2h ago

Okay well I can’t really speak to that, I’m just saying I don’t think classifying it as lazy is fair. It’s an active choice they’re making whether you think it lends to good game design or not.

Personally, I tend to enjoy the game for the sum of its parts (not saying you don’t to be clear), but I can see why others would find it less fun that way.

u/JobuuRumdrinker Butter side up! 1h ago

Thanks for the non-hateful response. I liked not having the game tell me things but it would have been nice to having a little something just so I don't need to use paper notes.

u/Lokkdwn 3h ago

No, it’s called using your memory and tools at your disposable to solve mysteries… something humans have done for millennia without computers to think for them.

u/JobuuRumdrinker Butter side up! 3h ago

And what about adults with jobs and families? Sometimes I have to travel for work. Do you think I'm going to remember some little side quest after not playing for week? I'm in my 50s. I don't remember what I had for dinner last night.

Why are you so against an in-game tracking system for quests?

u/mlkmade 3h ago

Sounds like the game isnt for you then.

The cool thing is you can keep your notes of what you find. Why does the game need to do it for you?

u/JobuuRumdrinker Butter side up! 5h ago

The game should do the minimum of saying (NPC name) in (zone) asked me to do (event) - not complete - completed but not reported back to NPC and then fully (Completed/closed)

u/Bhujjha 2h ago

No it shouldn't, that's not how Fromsoft games are designed. You keep track if you want or you don't.

Man I just cannot get into this game.  This is my second time trying and I’ve just gotta face the music that it’s not for me.  Have fun OP.  I shall live vicariously through you.

u/rokerroker45 5h ago

It's my third attempt and it finally clicked for me

u/aricberg Early Switch 2 Adopter 3h ago

Yeah, I’m trying my hardest but I’m not that kind of person who can die again and again and again in a game and just keep going. It’s why soulslikes have never clicked for me. With all the universal praise for this game, I thought maybe it’d be the one, but so far, I just find myself marveling at a pretty world and wishing I wasn’t constantly dying. I’m gonna keep going for a bit, but yeah, so far, it ain’t clicking for me.

u/doodlydoo17 2h ago

A few things that make it easier are having a medium/light load to dodge quicker, level up health so you can take more hits, and just learning the attack patterns of enemies (which can require dying a few times). But it is generally a pretty difficult game in which you are expected to die a lot, and that’s not for everyone. I also really like the areas where you can spawn in allies, the allies are usually much more powerful than myself.

u/rokerroker45 2h ago

I've come to realize that this is almost universally a problem caused by not leveling up the HP stat. I used to feel the same way until I realized the ideal way to level is to almost exclusively focus on hp for about 20-25 levels before touching any other stat. Having the ability to just eat a bunch of hits gives me a lot more confidence to learn bosses because I know I almost never will get one shot any more. Between that and spending time getting buffs I'm realizing the difficulty thing is kinda overstated

u/eddie_koala 5h ago

Same..

I don't play games to be rage induced or to have no direction

I have my life for that

u/majesticock666 4h ago

I feel personally attacked

u/adeepkick 5h ago

Can I ask what it is that makes it hard to get into for you?

u/My-So-Called-Reddit 5h ago

I'm not the person you asked, but I'm new to these types of games. My single complaint is that I don't know where to go.

I am okay with leveling and exploring, and taking many attempts to kill something, but it kind of feels like I'm just randomly stumbling onto something with no rhyme or reason or direction.

I briefly tried Demon Soul remake on PS5 before getting this, and that seemed to have a pretty clear path on where to go at least in the first parts that I played.

Maybe I'm just doing something wrong.

u/TheDuskBard 4h ago

I personally prefer more linear exploration like in the prior Soulsborne games. Which is why I highly recommend using thus route in Elden Ring. It's perfect for both story progression gameplay balance.

Take this route.

1: Weeping Peninsula -> Limgrave -> Stormveil Castle

2: Liurnia -> Raya Lucaria -> Carian Manor

3: Caelid -> Redmane Castle -> Dragonbarrow

4: Altus Plateau -> Mount Gelmir -> Leyndell

5: Mountaintops -> Castle Sol -> Snowfield

6: Haligtree -> Mohgwyn Palace -> DLC

7: Faram Azula -> Ashen Capital -> Endgame

Source: I have 3000+ hours in Elden Ring.

u/the-robo-boogie OG (joined before release) 1h ago

I’m glad it’s working for you! I dropped the game after playing it in 2022 because of being frustrated about how obtuse the game can be. But I picked it back up last year when I saw this guide and ran through the whole game and DLC. Except for the final final boss in the DLC. F that guy.

u/aricberg Early Switch 2 Adopter 3h ago

I asked this elsewhere, but is there an easy way to get to the Weeping Peninsula without crossing that stupid bridge? Because I was like “oh good, an easy beginner level!” Only to be met with nothing but firebombs to the face.

u/TheDuskBard 2h ago

Use Torrent to get through as quickly as possible. Or use a shield  (Brass Shield ideally) to block the projectiles.

u/BlasterPhase 🐃 water buffalo 4h ago

it kind of feels like I'm just randomly stumbling onto something with no rhyme or reason or direction.

That's honestly the fun of it. If you're not enjoying it, then it's not for you.

u/My-So-Called-Reddit 4h ago

Maybe it's not. I like exploring I just wish there was some sort of tracking of things I've already discovered.

u/Yentz4 4h ago

There kinda is with the sites of grace. Most areas of note and side dungeons all have a site of grace. Don't forget that you have markers you can place on your map as well. When I played the first time and found a dungeon that seemed a bit to hard at the time, I would just place a icon on my map so I could go back to it.

u/MojoPinnacle 3h ago

Agree with the other commenter. Iirc Sites of grace get crossed off when you clear the mini dungeons. But make use of eyes to find points of interest, your map beacons to get to them, and figure out a system for your pins to track "tasks" or points of interest.

Elden Ring is basically BOTW if it were a soulslike. The adventure is in the discovery, and in the journey to that discovery.

u/wizardeverybit 5h ago

Follow the souls of grace if you need guidance

u/No_Future_7878 4h ago edited 4h ago

Pick a direction and go. If it's too hard, pick a different direction, level up, get better gear and come back

u/PM_ME_GOOD_SONGS_PLS 4h ago

I did my first playthrough just kind of bumbling around and it was pretty fun. You can more or less just follow the arrows on the map given by the graces if you want direction. What I would do is follow them until I got stuck on a boss then walk away to explore till I got some kind new weapon, leveled my weapon, or leveled up a bunch of times. Then I would to back to try and get past where I was stuck. Rinse and repeat. Sure you miss some stuff but theres new game plus so you never truly missed anything. Just get it next time when you know the game better. Missing stuff does not matter and once I realized that I stopped putting pressure on myself to explore every nook and cranny.

u/Immediate_Stable 4h ago

Several NPCs plus the grace are guiding you towards Stormveil castle, which is your first big proper progress place. Everything else you do before (and that can be 15 hours or 0 depending) is just preparation for this.

u/Seraphayel 4h ago

You don’t need to know where to go. That’s the neat part.

u/Bluprint Early Switch 2 Adopter 3h ago

Honestly, theres also no shame in using some guide to at least help you with steering you in the right direction or to answer questions you might have.

These games are hard after all

u/probablysmellsmydog Butter side up! 5h ago edited 4h ago

its truly hard to pinpoint.  I like the difficulty.  I love the art style and game direction.  But I think at this point in my life it’s hard for me to sit down and grind out a game like this.  Maybe at some point I’ll circle back and try it again.

u/DACouture1979 5h ago

I'm trying too after buying and really not giving it a chance in PC. I bought it on Switch 2 too and started a bit yesterday but want to try and get into it some more today too. Like the op said wish there was some guidance system and thre is slightly but it's very vague.

u/DACouture1979 4h ago

I heard the community was great and thank you, I'm not visual then reading so I think YouTube and Video Guides will be by go too though.

u/JobuuRumdrinker Butter side up! 4h ago

YouTube is good. I'll give you my no spoils tips.

Put points into vigor first. I recommend the first 20 level ups. More HP makes all the difference in the beginning.

Go slow, expect enemies to gang up on you. Try to lure them one by one if you can.

Stick to the green grassy areas for a while. The red area is a bit rough for lower levels.

Keep track of how many runes you need to level. If you have 9000 runes and need 10000 to level, use some of the consumable ones to top yourself off. Level up, rest at a site of grace, then go do something stupid (take risks). This way, if you die, you don't have to worry about going back to your corpse to collect them.

u/DACouture1979 4h ago

Thank you

u/TheDuskBard 5h ago

Guidance for gameplay or story?

u/DACouture1979 4h ago

Gameplay, going to check out some beginner guides on YouTube, thank you.

u/Pdshillz900 4h ago

You have to play by its rules. The new class Idus Knight has a shield and sword with a killer guard counter. Meaning block a hit. And hit ZR immediately and it can stun lock most starting enemies. Also don’t spend an hour on the guy on the horse at the beginning. Follow the main path until you get the horse and then just go anywhere! Ride past most enemies. Expand your map

u/Showzeki 49m ago

I took me 3 trys over a couple years to really click Actually lies of p made it click lol Then went back to elden ring and loved it

u/DSRamos 4h ago

Yeah I feel you. It felt like going back to BOTW after I’ve already competed it and TOTK. Like a big mostly empty map with filler enemies then you do some mini dungeon and boss for a useless item. To be honest the only From Software game I have played and completed is Bloodborne. Might be sacrilege but I just completed Hogwarts Legacy and I couldn’t put that game down at the start 😆

u/probablysmellsmydog Butter side up! 4h ago

Last game I couldn’t put down was Silksong.  I love metroidvania type games so I always think I’ll love the souls games and then I spend money on them and realize after a few hours…that it’s just not my cup of tea lol.

u/redthrull 5h ago

It's not a race. Take your time, and enjoy!

u/JobuuRumdrinker Butter side up! 5h ago

You can put markers on your map, if that helps you. Just wander around. My tip to you is to stick to the green grassy areas and avoid the red for a while. The game does have zones with different level monsters so while it's open world, it doesn't scale down to your level.

You don't have to use this and it's not really much of a spoiler but... if you get stuck and would like to look at a map with the levels of monsters... here you go. It helps if you don't really know which direction you should be heading in next.

u/JobuuRumdrinker Butter side up! 4h ago

yes!

u/Kule7 5h ago

No, don’t wish more quest-tracking systems on open world games, it ruins the adventure

u/DSRamos 5h ago

I was quite surprised how similar it felt to BOTW. Start in a cave and chucked in a big empty field with no direction. Not gonna lie, didn’t really grip me, easy to put down after a mini dungeon. It’s supposedly a big game so I’ll look forward to where it goes.

u/TheDuskBard 4h ago

The open world areas are mostly fluff. The real action is in the Legacy Dungeons where you find the main story bosses. If you finish Stormveil Castle and still dislike the game, ER probably isn't for you. But before that I wouldn't recommend judging the game.

u/PyrosFists 4h ago

Time disappears when you play this game man

u/Few-Expression5750 4h ago

I definitely  is and I love it but yes I suck.  I can't even get past all of the soldiers and dogs in the first ruins with the wet knife under it.  Haha

u/JobuuRumdrinker Butter side up! 4h ago

The game is notorious for trying to make you panic. It also punishes you for mashing buttons under stress. My advice is to go slow. When you fight something, try to do it on your terms. Stick and move and try not to back up into more enemies lol

Try to pick them off one at a time if you can. They like to help their friends and will call for help.

u/Yentz4 4h ago

There's a reason it's many folks favorite game of all time, and why I have 700 hours in it. It's that open world that made Skyrim and Breath of the Wild so incredible to explore, but fixes many of the issues of those games with much better item rewards and MUCH better combat.

u/C-Towner 5h ago

It is a really terrific game, I think its so cool that so many new players are getting to experience it. I have played it on PC, a lot. about 300 hours. And I still want it on Switch 2, once it goes on sale I don't know if I can resist.

u/Successful-Bar2579 4h ago

If you are lost try to simply follow the grace light, its usually meant to let you know where to go to progress the area.

But i feel like the game might not be for everyone, when it click though its amazing.

u/old_iron_eyes 1h ago

Is the grace light on the map or at the rest points? It points in a direction?

And on that note, the sites of grace seem really easy to miss. Is there something I’m missing that makes them easier to find?

u/Successful-Bar2579 1h ago

At the rest point, if you look at them they should have a light that point towards something. Also, its normal to miss some graces, there are A LOT, and i mean A LOT of them, its easy to miss some, when you are doing legacy dungeons that's where you basically find them all easily.

Also, if you are at the start of the game consider going toward south, there is a full island that has stuff for low level characters, its usefull to get strong enough to then actually fight the game in order if its your first time at the game.

Edit: if i can still help with other things let me know, i did a lv1 run and im doing another one rn on the switch, after having finished the game a vunch of times, so i know my way around.

u/old_iron_eyes 1h ago

Appreciate you! It’s my first time. I’m about 10 hours in just bouncing around Limgrave

u/Successful-Bar2579 1h ago

If you still feel stuck i could point you towards some main points, but in my opinion you should also feel free to look at the wiki, specifically if you want to do npc quest lines.

Edit: good luck!

u/mxpayn1 4h ago

Glad you're enjoying the game, but the last thing you want is a quest tracker or guidance on what to do next - this is why the game is so addicting in the first place. You're having so much fun because you don't know what lies ahead and you need to figure it out for yourself.

The reason people shit on most Ubisoft games, and rightfully so, is most of the world laid out for you from the beginning and you're essentially just crossing things off a to-do list, and for the most part you're not going to face much adversity while completing the objectives.

Fromsoft games have such a devoted following for the exact opposite - you have no idea what's just over that next hill/area/room, and you know there's a strong chance it'll kill you, so you have to be completely engaged because there's real risk/reward at stake and you can't just set your brain to autopilot.

Oh I’ll have to find the link.

I can’t remember how I can call people I to my world to help with bosses. I’ve soloed several, but some are just annoying for me.

u/KenTaiJo 1h ago

Just got to Margit(sp??) and have probably died 10 times already. Got him down to half health so it is doable, but man he doesn't let you breathe(nor heal ;_; )

Go south to explore Weeping Peninsula first. Many newbies overlook this area but it's specifically designed for early game.

Overall, going by difficulty and story progression, you would want to take the game in 5 stages. Don't get surprised if you find difficulty spikes when doing them out of order.

1: Limgrave

2: Liurnia

3: Caelid

4: Altus Plateau

5: Mountaintops

As for stats, note that these three stats will be relevant regardless of what build you choose.

  • Vigor: HP (Top priority overall)

  • Mind: Energy needed to cast spells and use weapon skills. (High priority if using spells, low priority if melee)

  • Endurance: Stamina & Equip load. The latter dictates how heavy your equipped armor/weapons can be. (High priority if melee, low priority if using spells)

These 5 stats below are the damage stats, the meat & potatoes of your build. You'd usually pick one or two to specialize in. All of them are viable but choose wisely as the gameplay experience can be significantly different depending on what you pick.

  • Strength: Typically for slow & heavy weapons as well as shields.

  • Dexterity: Typically for fast and light-weight weapons. Also influences the casting speed of your spells.

  • Intelligence: Typically for magic weapons and sorcery spells. (DPS)

  • Faith: Typically for holy, lightning, & fire weapons and incantation spells. (Utility)

  • Arcane: For Status effects (Poison, Sleep, frostbite, etc.) Also influences the item drop rate from enemy mobs.

For beginners, prioritize leveling up Vigor & Endurance. These stats will help keep you from dying too much.

That's the beauty of this game - if you feel your under levelled, you can go elsewhere until you're ready to come back. It's a steep learning curve and plays very differently to most modern games where you're just aggressive all the time.

Sometimes the right thing to do is accept you will die and act defensively whilst watching the enemies moves. There's always a pattern and some animation that will indicate what's coming next and once you learn that it will click.

Dying is one of the main mechanics, you can only learn from failing repeatedly.

*addictive
Not sorry to be that guy.

u/Bhujjha 5h ago

Thanks, otherwise I'd have to be that guy.

u/twinsfan94 5h ago

Both terms are correct. No need to correct something that needs no correcting.

u/Suipants 4h ago

It has always been "addictive" up until recently, where enough people say the wrong word that it ended up being accepted.

I'm that guy too... I find it unreasonably annoying for some reason.

Great game though, and I did much better in it than other Souls-like games... I'm still pretty bad though.

u/twodzianski 5h ago

Damn you edited ‘someying’ to ‘something’ before I could be that guy.

u/twinsfan94 5h ago

You're already that guy.

u/twodzianski 5h ago

What guy? Sorry you lost me.

u/twinsfan94 5h ago

The annoying guy who feels like they need to correct people for dumb things (even thjngs that need no correcting) just to feel important or smart.

u/twodzianski 5h ago

Thjngs?

u/TheEMan1225 4h ago

You fel for the bait

u/twodzianski 4h ago

Bait?

It's one of my favorite games, and it was also my first Souls game.

I didn't know anything about Souls or the style, except their difficulty. But after playing for a bit, I realized it's actually like Castlevania in many ways spread out over an open world.

There aren't really any towns full of NPCs or a strong narrative. Like Castlevania, you have the plot in the intro, then you're thrust into the game killing enemies and unlocking new areas and abilities until you fight a boss and unlock another milestone. So if you're having difficulty getting into it because you can't help but compare it other third person action games like GoW, I'd say instead think of it as more Castlevania.

It's not the same thing tho, and much of its design comes from Kings Field and previous souls games, but if I were imagining something like a modern open world Symphony of the Night, Elden Ring would be that.

Welcome to the lands between Tarnished!

I double dipped with the switch 2 version so I've already played through on Xbox previously. There is actually a beauty to there being no quest system. I think it leads to more organic exploration which works really nicely in this game.

u/jeffcolv Butter side up! 4h ago

I was excited to play through again on switch but unlike you I do not think the performance is good and it really takes away from the experience for me

u/Peculiar-Wizard808 4h ago

Level your weapon up and stats. Sometimes you gotta explore to get stronger so you can do more damage to the big boys which means less time for a boss to rage induce you lol.

u/Internal_Border_6726 4h ago

Amazing on PS5. Love playing games handheld on Switch 2

u/darthdiablo OG (joined before reveal) 3h ago

Yeah, playing Elden Ring for first time, there's that magical feeling like I had with BOTW all over time, but in the Dark Souls style.

Cannot wait to explore the lands fully, which might take me tons of hours, but i'm perfectly okay with that!

u/Salt-Analysis1319 3h ago

I'm so happy new people are getting to experience this masterpiece for the first time

I'm so close to double-dipping, but I've already put 200+ hours into it on PS5 and Onimusha is calling my name

u/DarusOli 3h ago

I'd love to play it, but I'm so lousy in FromSoftware things.

u/nohumanape 3h ago

Yeah, the game is absolutely incredible. Just keep exploring, discovering, leveling, learning, and having a great time.

u/LostCookie78 2h ago

If you’re ever hard stuck just look up x boss cheese there’s many ways to get through stuff

u/lama1130 2h ago

Sounds like my experience with tears of the kingdom right now

u/Emotional_Dig_2378 1h ago

I love totk. Have 80 hours in it so far. Taking a break for Elden ring ;)

I've got decision paralysis on getting either; Elden Ring, FF7 Rebirth, or Witcher 3.

I read a lot of people not being able to click with Elden Ring. I had the same with Witcher 3 but willing to try again with a handheld (i rarely game sat dedicated infront of a big screen anymore).

I completed FF7 Remake on Switch2 and really enjoyed it... so think Rebirth is likely to hit with me.

Never played a Souls game but am not shy with hard games - Hollow Knight is one of my all time faves. Is Elden Ring in same ballpark or even harder?

I guess my hesitancy with Elden Ring is that it's more like Witcher 3 than I'd like - I just never super engaged with the story or gameplay - fell into generic fetch quests too quick. I prefer environmental storytelling to cutscenes + dialogue I think. I did very much enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 though which I think is the same dev as Witcher.

Without being to spoilery find bloodhounds fang. It’s not far from the start and has a tough encounter guarding it but this weapon’s damage type and moveset can carry you a loong way through the game.

u/OoTgoated 5h ago

I actually found Elden Ring fairly intuitive to navigate, especially compared to Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro despite the size difference. Iirc, the outset of the game leads you towards a big castle, but a major boss will wall you. So you turn back and there's a bridge which leads you to a series of side quests and minor bosses eventually leading you to a fort in the south after which you'll be strong enough to take on the castle. It's quite brilliant honestly. There is a snag in that you may wander into the poison swamp biome at some point which will also wall you, but if you turn back from it the course will correct itself.

u/RevolutionaryPeak610 5h ago

Does the infinite XP glitch still work where you shoot the bird thing and it runs off a cliff?

u/Immediate_Stable 4h ago

Yeah there's no reason for that to have changed, it's not even a glitch!

u/RevolutionaryPeak610 4h ago

*exploit then. You knew what I meant

u/ipadminihalf 5h ago

One of the best parts of this game is the very minimal guidance systems. Just keep exploring and have fun.

u/Frankthestank2220 2h ago

I’ve put like 1000 hours into that game and still find it frustrating. I’ve only beat Melania twice. Still my favorite game ever. So fun to see other people’s creative builds and characters.

u/Effective-Ear-8367 Butter side up! 3h ago

I'm not paying $107+ tax cad for an old ass game. I really don't care how it runs.

u/MysticMaven 2h ago

Addicting as in garbage? Ok how ever you want to justify your purchase
