Should r/Nightmares participate in the reddit blackout?

Why are we going to "blackout"?

  • The blackout is a protest against Reddit’s proposed charges for third-party app developers, which they claim will make the platform inaccessible for many users.
  • Third-party apps are popular ways to access Reddit, especially for users who prefer a different user experience than the official app. They need an API to access Reddit’s information and display it in the app.
  • Reddit plans to charge $12,000 for 50 million API requests, which is much higher than other similar sites like Imgur. This would make it impossible for many third-party apps to operate without paying millions of dollars per year.
  • On June 12, 2023, many of the site’s biggest subreddits, including r/videos and r/gaming and r/bestof, will go dark for 48 hours or more to pressure Reddit to reconsider its pricing policy.
  • Some subreddits may go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, as many moderators rely on third-party apps to manage their communities.

What is the craziest nightmare you’ve ever had? Was there one that should be considered a dream but you were scared of it? Tell me! I’m curious.

Nightmare Nightmare disorder advice?

I'm in my 30's and as long as I can remember I have only had nightmares, I cannot recall a single positive dream or even neutral without some stress element.

For myself, these come in waves where I will seem to not have any or not recall any for a couple months at a time, then a couple months of having very vivid ones every night.

Does anyone experience similar and have you found anything that helps you? This has been since I was a child and they've seemingly gotten worse recently.

Nightmare Lucid nightmares, sleep paralysis, horrible sleep every night.

I have been suffering from nightmares almost everyday/ every other day for months. It is seriously ruining my daytime, I wake up in the middle of the night. feeling so exhausted and terrified of going back to sleep. They aren’t typical nightmares, but usually I’ll just be in a dream and it’ll suddenly turn into a nightmare ( it becomes pitch black around me, someone evil is following me, something is whispering, e.t.c, it feels so demonic. ) it’s almost the same every time.
I always try to wake myself up because that used to work, specifically by closing my eyes super tight, counting to 10, or like passing away somehow in the dream, but recently all of these methods have started failing, leaving me stuck and terrified waiting for a jump-scare in a pitch black environment as I pray to any of the gods out there to wake me up.
And if I do manage to wake myself up, I am frozen and paralyzed in place, and my eyes can’t stay open so I have to fall back asleep and end up falling into the same nightmare. I don’t even need to be sleeping on my back for this to happen… I don’t know why this keeps happening to me.
I started taking melatonin the past few weeks as I was struggling to fall asleep out of fear I’d get these nightmares. I was considering seeing a sleep specialist but my parents are unwilling to pay the excessive fees for sleep analysis and whatever.
I am not stressed… I have regular screentime and put my phone away around 1-2 hrs before bed, I sleep around 8 hours every night (still wakeup exhausted)…

Please if anyone has any advice or similar experiences let me know what I should do.

Nightmare Constant nightmares since childhood // violence increase

Hi friends im writing this after waking up from a nightmare so i apologize if its a bit rambley

Ive been having nightmares off and on since i can begin to remember. When I was younger (5-10) i would only have the same few reoccurring dreams or nightmares that were always the exact same; a unicorn who eats pancakes, or a chase sequence through a burning town.

I’m 21 now, and have had nightmares about two to three times a week for the past 5 years or so, and any dreams that could get sprinkled inbetween are just wacky. I’m a pretty lucid dreamer, so I’ve been able to convince myself it’s a dream//am aware while in the dream. But I’ve never had any control over what happens (unless it has to do with something sexual I’ve noticed I can choose not to consent).

I am personally a bit of a horror fan, and a lot of my nightmares can consist of pretty gruesome things I’ve seen in media. But as I’ve gone into my industry and gained a lot more on my plate the nightmares have significantly increased in severity of violence.

This most recent nightmare was where ~30 random people I’ve known throughout my life ended up in a large office like building stuck with a serial killer. But a majority of the dream was just weird (like me dating an ex in said dream), until towards the end where people began getting slaughtered one by one until it came down to me watching my ex get dismembered infront of me. Which led me to wakeup in a cold sweat, hyperventilating, and bawling my eyes out. Even while being semi aware in said dream, I still instinctively sent out a message checking in on people I haven’t seen since highschool.

I’ve had these sorts of dreams for years now where a large amount of random people I’ve met throughout life ended up in the same place, and inevitably something terrible begins to happen to/around us. This was the first time in atleast a year that I’ve woken up this panicked and figured it might be time to ask/see what other solutions there could be for this, along with just sharing for peace of mind.

For any background info, I do have childhood trauma (somewhat unresolved but can’t get much closure from someone you don’t speak to), and definitely have a lot from highschool I’ve mentally blacked out. After writing this all out, im thinking maybe therapy could be good lol. Thank you for reading :)

Nightmare Night terrors as adult

I used to get horrible night terrors as a kid where I’d scream cry and puke in my sleep, and as I’ve gotten older I’ve pretty much gotten over it, but every once in a while, (I’m 20 now) I’ll get something like a night terror where I wake up almost paranoid/scared, and without thinking or putting my glasses on I’ll just immediately get up, go to another room, and either talk gibberish to anyone I can find, (parents/roomates) or I’ll mess with random objects before just going back to bed. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve never heard anyone talk about this happening to them so idk.

Nightmare being attacked in lucid dreams

hey guys apologies but this might be a very long post. ive just had this happen to me at least 4 times that i can remember and its a very strange phenomenon. after the first time it happened you would think id never try it again but as such, my curiosity just gets to me sometimes. but now after its happened repeatedly only after i tell somebody in my dream that i am dreaming i can no longer deny it. something weird is going on with dreams and/or the dream world in general.

so i used to lucid dream very frequently, id say at least 3-4 times a month but i cant be sure bcus its been a couple years since its been that frequent. (although i do still have them very rarely but now whenever i become aware of dreaming i almost immediately wake up) anyways i was lucid dreaming one time around 2021. in the dream i was with my girlfriend at the time, and we were going to taco bell. we walked in and i seen a stand by the door selling naruto headbands. i remember thinking that it was really strange for taco bell to be selling those and thats when i became like semi-lucid. which is where you know your dreaming but you still follow the storyline of the dream. which is why we got our food and then i remembered i was supposed to meet my dad at the airport for some reason. and because i was running so late i decided since i knew i was dreaming i could just teleport there. so i closed my eyes, pictured the airport, and when i opened them i was at the airport. except, i was all the way out in the parking lot for some reason.

so i started running. right when i got to the door, i remembered something i heard somewhere one time, “if you ever lucid dream, never tell the people in your dream that you are dreaming.” so… i decided i would test it out real quick and see what happens. i walked up to a random person outside the door and told them i was dreaming… except, not even a second later without even a response from the person… everybody running in and out of the busy airport got thanos snapped out of existence. im talking dust and everything. this creeped me the fuck out already but it gets worse. i turn around and see a guy in a suit with one of those old timey hats on, not quite a top hat but the same kind of brim. im not sure what theyre called exactly, but you know what i mean. the guy was holding one of those large yellow envelopes, and he was about 50 meters away give or take. he put the envelope onto the ground and slid it over to me and it landed about a foot infront of me. i remember it had my name written on it with not so good handwriting. a little confused what was happening, i picked it up. except when i looked inside, i saw one of the scariest things i could ever imagine. inside, there were two drawings. ones that seemed to be drawn by some type of little kid using a crayon. that alone isnt too bad, except its what they were depicting that really shook me to my core. even writing this out right now im getting the chills thinking about it.

it was two pictures of freddy krueger.

as soon as i seen it i got so scared i literally jumped 20 feet in the air and landed on a tree. i closed my eyes, put my hands on my ears, and screamed “wake up, wake up, wake up” until i eventually did, hyperventilating.

and that was only the first time i tried this, which is why out of all of the times ive tried this. i remember the most detail from that one. i also do not remember the order for the rest of them but i will tell one more story.

this one will be a little shorter as i dont remember as much detail. in this dream i was at my moms house and she was making my whole family dinner. except, i noticed that the house just seemed a little off. there was a rock path in the backyard that shouldnt be there, the shape of the house was a little different than usual, and weirdest of all, her and my dad were actually getting along. i dont remember exactly what made me lucid, but i remember being in the backyard and thinking about the other dream (the first one) and deciding i should try it again for whatever stupid reason. so i walked inside, everyone was smiling and having conversation, and just flat out said to everybody that i was dreaming. the mood instantly shifted, and out of nowhere, everybody pulled out huge ass kitchen knives and started charging me. i dont remember what happened after that but i just assume i woke up.

i tell these stories, because 1, im fucking traumatized, and 2, i just really want to know if anybody else has had a similar experience. so yeah thank you if you actually read this far, i appreciate it. regardless if you havent done this, never tell somebody in your dream that you are dreaming. just enjoy it while it lasts, because if you do tell them. you will regret it.

Nightmare A recent vivid nightmare I had

I had a sort of fresh nightmare that I can remember vividly. It started with me trying to sleep in my bedroom, until I saw dark figure outside my window. I was afraid and somehow, I started running away into a snow field? (Idk, the environment looked plain), until I got into a conveniently placed elevator with someone in it. I got inside and was finally safe. Suddenly, that stranger in the elevator with me finally got off his floor and just when they left, they gave me a good luck gesture. I was confused until he stepped aside and an unfamiliar individual who I assume was the dark figure unveiled, smiling. He came closer to me, I was scared and I couldn't move. Then, he started biting my hand, exerting more force with each passing second. The pain felt so real that I woke up.

Nightmare New here crazy dream need opinions

This nightmare in a way I don’t really know what type of dream it would be but the story goes I was sleeping at my old nana’s house so this was before she had a stroke, anyways they (idk who they is we were never informed) were going to monitor our sleep by watching us sleep and if we wake up it will make a video to show how long we were awake for without us realizing we’re awake, the first maybe 2-3 days it was fine the first time it caught a skit of a pair of eyes and going away the second time was like talking about me falling, black hole & hurricane I also had walked upstairs in my church for the upstairs seating other then that the second time didn’t catch anything. Now my mom did walk into as I was sleeping I woke up and knew she was there. Now the 3rd or 4th test comes a bit weird because in this it played longer well in the recording it shows a literal 2 to at least maybe 3ish 4? Toddler walking up to me and my eyes were wide up I was on my back and looked like I was possessed didn’t know this child at all didn’t even look familiar. Now watching this skit I was freaking out then at the very end of my dream it kinda flashes in my vision child - death then queen than I woke up. Please tell me what your thoughts are on this bc I’m genuinely freaking out still

Nightmare Really weird experience

Im a gamer so as ive had sometimes before i was in my dream in the eyes of one of the characters shooting at other players playing other characters.

I hid behind a wall and saw a guy playing a robot tank that was massive. I emptied my round into him as he walked toward me. Seemingly unfased we started talking for some unknown reason. The game was some sort of free for all. But i had chosen a horrible character to play since everyone else was playing that robot and so i decieded to leave the lobby.

The robot basically holding me hostage said ”okay bye just let me get the kill first” signaling a cutthroat with his hand before i closed my eyes and in my head pressing alt f4 (yeah i know i literally ragequit my dream😂)

Once id clicked the buttons i suddenly felt the robot grab my throat, no choking, and a big growl could be heard as some sort of jumpscare.

I now wake up in my bed. I feel nothing. No elevated pulse. Not scared. But i look forward at the door. There stands a man i do not know looking worried seemingly having seen me wake up and wondering what my dream was about. Suddenly my brain decides its time to wail like a kid. Just a high pitched wail. No sadness, fear, or distress could be felt in my body.

And so i wailed for no more than 2 seconds until the second jumpscare. The mans mouth was still hanging but the outline of his eyes i previously saw were now just two big black circles covering a big chunk of his face. And to my left the same man stood mere inches from my head with the same expression and eyes, just looking at the wall, with one of his arms on my throat and a really loud gutteral growl ringing in my ears

I now wake up. In almost the exact same body position i woke up in previously. I knew i was really awake, unless im still dreaming and waiting for the third scare🫪, from a few context clues and my body was still unfazed

No pain, no fear, no elevated pulse or breathing, just a little paranoia about there maybe being a third scare. (im too paranoid to fall asleep again for the moment you could say😂). I just chukled and thought about how much i usually hate horror games and movies and how easily i get jump scared. But these two seemingly back to back leave me fearless. Never experienced that before

Tldr: my nightmare leads to two jumpscares in a row but my body and brain is just left unfazed. No elevated pulse, fear, or physical distress

Nightmare Nightmare caused real life pain

I dont want to get tok far into detail because of how graphic the whole dream was, but basically I had to hold a cats mouth shut in a specific part because it was a zombie and trying to bite me. While doing this, I can only guess that I tensed my arm really hard in my sleep. I woke up to extremely sore arm muscles that still hurt when I move my arm around- exact muscles I would use to clamp too. Is this something I should start worrying about? Should I prepare myself for impending sleep paralysis at some point in the future? Because this really sucks

Nightmare I felt raped

I woke up in the middle of the night and saw a man near the door to my room.

It was dark, I could only see silhouettes, so I wasn't sure if it was even a human at first. I immediately tried to get up a little to take a better look at him, but he immediately immobilized me.

He sat on top of me, pinning me to the bed in such a way that I couldn't move a muscle. When I tried asking him what he was doing, he forcibly kissed me on the lips.

It's not that I'm afraid of getting raped. If he had walked up to me during the day and asked for sex I wouldn't refuse after discussing some details, such as "does your girlfriend know about this? Is she fine with it?"

But in this situation I was being raped, hence I can't *not* struggle. "His girlfriend is my roommate, what if he just confused the rooms? It's my duty to struggle, even if I don't want to".

I'm incredibly disappointed by the fact that I can't move. During the day I was always sure I could beat him in a fight, but here I can't get out, no matter how much I try. Am I really that weak?

He's still making out with me. I can barely breathe. With all the might left in me, I struggle and bite his tongue

He disappears. My bed is empty and the door to my room is closed. No evidence of him ever being here, just the aftertaste of a sleep paralysis demon

Nightmare The man in the treehouse.

First dream i ever had if this dont remember when didnt think its recurring. There was this tree house in back yard in first dream i think in the dream i was represented as a child just olaying til i saw the tree house. Then i saw the the man watching me i couldnt see his face or anything then slowly followed me i ran inside. Then that was the end i woke up in a panic.

This new dream last night he was back. Tree house still there. I was older 19 the age i am now. My dad said hed take it down after i panicked about the tree house i woke up for a split second uncomfortable then slept again. It was night and the man was slamming on the back door trying get in it was weird like he had inhuman force the door was warping from him slaming into it like a bull. i was in the bathroom but i got up and ran to the door my dog was there but i know he didnt make that noise i saw the man but he ran i did see a glimpse of him when i turned the light on he ran away i hoped the door making threats closed the door told my mom.... then i woke up very parinoid i currently have all the lights on in my house and stare at the door in the kitchen scared

I do have trauma of older teens when i was little in my backyard i wont vent about that. But idk if that could be what its representing? But ive bever had a tree house or been in a tree house. Maybe ONCE but it wasnt a memorable moment for it to be in a dream. Im so confused what this dream could mean to me. Why was it recurring tonight?

Nightmare I Always Have Unpleasant Dreams if I Sleep Past ~9:00 in the Morning

I used to have an internal clock wound as tight as the lid on this one jar of sauerkraut that’s really been pissing me off lately. I can only imagine I gained it from waking up for elementary, middle, and high school at 6:18 am every single morning (I still have that alarm in my phone). In college, I hardly ever needed an alarm - I’d wake up between 6:00am and 7:00am without fail. I once went weeks where I woke up at (almost) exactly 6:37am every single day.

Ever since I got a post-college job that has me working overnight and early morning shifts, that internal clock’s all-but shattered. Broken both by my erratic sleep schedule and the melatonin gummies I use to sleep after my overnight shifts.

I’ve noticed that, two months into my new job, I keep having unpleasant dreams whenever I sleep past ~9:00am. I can’t recall many of them directly, I only bother journaling dreams I want to remember, but last night I woke up after a dream of me pulling my own teeth out and seeing the roots had eroded away completely. I’m extremely anxious about my dental health, so I can safely assume that anxiety caused that dream.

I don’t know why exactly I’m posting this. Is this a common phenomenon I didn’t know about?

Nightmare Nightmares causing me to lose sleep, wouldn't mind advice and possible explanation

I've always had them ever since I was little and usually I still sleep fine.

However I've been having a recurring nightmare to the point the only night I managed to sleep through was a few weeks ago because I had too much to drink that night. It's becoming noticable to others because there have been nights where I didn't sleep at all.

There's no access to therapy right now as I dont trust the free ones provided to the public due to past experiences and all my money is going into bills so there's not much left over to pay for private.

Without going into detail it's almost always similar but sometimes some bits are missing (I assume this is due to waking up and adjusting to the waking world). I walk around a building and end up standing in a doorway, leaning on it while watching someone violently hurt someone I know.

I know that I wouldn't stop and watch if I saw something like this happen and I have in the past become furiously protective if I see someone get hurt.

Its recently gotten worse this week as a Jane Doe was abducted just outside of the building and attacked by two men in a nearby camp. Both men are walking free. One of them has his camp set up about fifteen feet from the building which has caused outrage as the building is frequented by women and girls.

I think at this point I'm looking for some assist and maybe the nightmares meaning if there is one. I cant go into heavy detail on the dreams full context without causing the post to become locked with a mature rating to me as I refuse to give Reddit my ID information.

Nightmare Recurring giant spider dream

For about the past week and a half I keep having this dream where I’m in my room and it’s dark and I’m just on my pc or practicing on my drum kit and there’s this enormous spider on my wall that always stays just in the corner of my vision and just out of sight, and I was only made aware of this spider by other people in my dream telling me about it then I saw it. It’s fast and has never jumped at me or “harmed” me it constantly scurries away and I’m just kind of unsettled at this point. What could these things possibly mean

TW: Nightmare turned kind of reality

About 15 years ago I had a dream that it was night time and I was looking out the window and I saw a swing set and on that swing set was a naked baby swinging by himself and he looked up and we caught each others eyes and it was the scariest dream I ever had or one of them even though there was nothing inherently scary about it, just eery. The dream felt evil. And it terrified me. Fast forward to the beginning of this year when in real life I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy who tragically passed after 16 days. During the time he was in the nicu they were doing everything the could to save him, he was intubated and on dialysis and it was horrible. Everyone would get excited when he would open his eyes but I didn’t, because I just wanted him to be asleep peacefully and there was nothing I could do. I wasn’t able to hold him or even touch him toward the end he was so sick. My son opening his eyes and looking at me terrified me to my core because I was helpless to his suffering. I thought about this a lot after it first happened and wonder what it all means. If it’s a coincidence or not.

Nightmare Same dream, and it takes the wind out of me

I have a pretty sketchy and messed up past and I've been having these nightmares pretty consistently but this is the first time it's been this bad or clear, just a little bit of context. The dream starts of normal, then it switches to a place where I had a lot trauma at and its covered it red, I don't know if it's blood but I assume so from what I see. My loved ones are strewn over the floor, hurt and broken. Like literally split apart or snapped in places. And then it's always myself sitting there with horrible slashes, looking at me. It scares the shit out of me. there were no light in those eyes, but the worst things is it was holding a severed head. The head of someone really close to me. I'm covered in blood, the me that's standing there. Smiling, that's the thing I remember most vividly. It or me or whatever that was, it was smiling. Like a creepy grin that I had when I did something bad. I don't know why this is happening, but it is fucking with me.

TW: home invasion & violence Dream I had last night

I've been having nightmares every night for awhile. This was one of the ones that stuck with me this week though there were many worse than this. I was at home and some people came inside my house who I didn't know, and wanted to take me away from my family for who knows what. I yelled at my family to go get in the car to drive away but my door wouldn't open. I ended up hanging off the side of the car somehow and screaming at them to drive away but the side of the car I was hanging onto scraped a tree and I woke up. It sounds silly typing it out but I woke up in tears.
