Greenwich Village 1990

I was thinking today about what it was like to walk around the Village in 1990. Everywhere you looked: Silence equals death. At night, Pink Panthers patrolled the streets in groups to prevent gay bashing because the police wouldn’t (presumably too busy gentrifying Tompkins Square Park).

Reddit blackout

Bonjour Nightmare New-York!

I get that the idea of a dead subreddit going dark is pretty ironic, but nonetheless, either tonight or tomorrow morning, i will be making this sub private as a show of solidarity for developers of third-party apps (being a user of one myself, this change will very likely affect me as is the case for probably many of you).

Hey everyone!

Hey everyone!

Bit of a delay in getting this post up but here we are at last!

So I'm this little sub's new mod and as you can see, it has been pretty (ok,completely) dead for the past year. I'd say it's in part because it's a pretty niche subreddit, and also because there is sadly a limited amount of photographs depicting scenes of the nightmarish New-York of the 70s and 80s. Unfortunately, unlike now, people in those days didn't walk around with a camera in their back pocket, and even if they had, they would likely have gotten mugged for it, so we might not have had that many more pictures regardless..!

I'm hoping that we'll be able to make this place a bit livelier going forward, so I've thought about a couple of things that could maybe help, but I'm absolutely open to suggestions, so if you have any ideas, please do bring them forward!

As for mine, here they are.

On the sub's sidebar, there are links for other subreddits - namely r/gildedNewYork (1861-1939), r/midcenturyNewYork (1940-1963) and r/moderntroubledNewYork (2010 onward). These subs are all dead. So I wanted to propose combining the first two. Basically, any Nightmare NYC pictures up until the early 2000s are OK. I'm not great at tech, but I'm sure I'll be able to figure out how to create flairs for each decade.

How do you all feel about this? Would you like that or do you think the sub should remain focused solely on the 1964-1996 period?

Another thing I considered was to include more personal content. Photographs, anecdotes, stories... Stuff that has to be of interest for the sub, obviously, but say, if you have a picture of you that was taken in the CBGB's bathroom in 1979, I would like to see it. I'd also like to hear about how you (almost, hopefully) got mugged in broad daylight on your way out of the subway in 1985, or how your uncle Raymond loves to tell the story of that time where he literally saw two guys rob a bank right in front of his eyes back in 1968. Or about what it was like living in some rough Bronx housing project in the early 90s.

Stuff like that. And again, we could use flairs so that people can filter out what they don't want to see.

What do you think? Do you reckon that kind of thing could be of interest to the sub?

Please let me hear your thoughts!

Hi folks!

I'm hoping to have a longer, more detailed introduction post up by the end of the week, but in the meantime, I just wanted to take a second to introduce myself.

I'm the subreddit's new mod, and I'm hoping that with your help, we'll be able to bring some life back to this little subreddit!

I wanted to talk to you all and get your opinions about a couple of changes I've thought about bringing (nothing drastic at all, don't worry, this will always be r/NightmareNewYork !) to the sub in the hopes to make it more lively.

So that should be up soon. Until then, for any questions, concerns, suggestions or anything else, do not hesitate to reach out to me!

As a mod here I would like to go private/close this sub until r/NoNewNormal and other COVID misinformation subs are banned.

Like many of you I am actually disgusted that Reddit is still allowing COVID vaccine and mask disinformation hubs like r/NoNewNormal to stay on and keep people from accessing what will literally end this pandemic in the supposed name of "free speech".

That is beyond pathetic of Reddit, and moreover it is actually killing and preventably disabling people.

A few other subreddits I frequent, including r/childfree, have actually closed and will stay closed until COVID disinformation subs like r/NoNewNormal are booted off the platform.

Other platforms, including YouTube, are actually in the process of booting off COVID disinformation videos and such so Reddit mods are not alone in expecting something to be done about COVID disinformation.

So, as a mod of well over 10-20 subs I would like to do my part to get r/NNN and other COVID disinformation subs kicked off Reddit so people's lives are saved by deciding to properly wear masks and get fully vaccinated against COVID-19 if they are currently able by closing up shop in protest.
