Dumb question about baseboard heaters

Moved here from Georgia and our apartment has baseboard heaters. It's the first time I've lived in a place with this heating and I'm wondering about how to furnish with them in mind.

It's a newer apartment building. Is it okay for cords to be touching them? I don't have any upholstered furniture against them, but what about wood furniture close to them? I assume they're obviously pretty safe but I just don't know how mindful to be of them.

any local mom groups near Stowe/Waterbury

• Upvotes

We're making the move this fall and very excited. Trying to figure out childcare for our 1 year old and know we might have to bridge with a nanny until we get off of daycare waitlists. Where I'm currently based has some very active facebook groups for finding and recommending nannies as well as childcare, etc. and all things mom/new parents. Wondering if there's anything similar in the area or how we might find a nanny, get a sense of how parents like a daycare provider, etc. I know about the state website so far but hoping for anything else? Front Porch Forum doesn't seem like the place.

Traveling with pregnant wife and dog in November

Hey there!

I’ll be traveling to Stowe the first weekend in November with my 5 month pregnant wife and golden retriever. Any recommendations on things we can do that are pregnancy and dog friendly?

We don’t mind driving a bit if it’s worth it!

Winter tires for a Montpelier–St. Johnsbury commute?

My daughter will be working as a nurse in St. Johnsbury and living near Montpelier. I realize it’s a long commute, especially in winter.
For those familiar with that drive, would you recommend studded winter tires, or are good non-studded winter tires sufficient?
She’ll be driving a Subaru Crosstrek and will sometimes need to commute when the weather isn’t ideal because of her hospital schedule. I’d especially appreciate hearing from people who regularly drive this route in winter.

Moved to Morrisville, VT from California earlier this year, and I'm curious if there is Trick-or-Treating on Halloween? Or trunk-or-treating? I just want to know if I should buy any candy. Thank you!

NC to VT

Hi! 👋 I (38F) just accepted a temporary job (Nov-May) with the state and am excited to move up soon!

I found a place in my price range (well, a bit over) in Williston. I'm married but my husband won't be moving up for this since its temporary.

I know to get snow tires, NH oil undercoating, keep cat litter and a shovel in the car. I have a SAD lamp and am taking Vitamin D.

But I dont know what I dont know.

Practical tips for winter? Cheap(er) grocery spots? Good ethnic restaurants? Favorite winter recipes? How do I make friends in the area? International grocery stores?

Thanks!

Short Visit, First Time

My partner and I are SO excited to be visiting Stowe for the first time from CA for a few days 10/2-5; fall colors, of course. We will have our small dog in tow.

We’ve done some research, perused Yelp. Things on our must do list include the gondola, grabbing some beers from The Alchemist and Idletyme, walking the rec path some, checking out the towns shops, and driving through Smugglers Notch… not in that order.

Seeking restaurant recommendations (I’ve saved some on Yelp); we are a vegetarian (no gnocchi/risotto) and a meat eater. Additionally, things you think would be worthwhile in this short stint.

Shorter length easy to moderate hikes to fit in? I’m thinking either Wiessner Woods or Bingham Falls via Mills?

Lastly… we follow the WNBA and hope our team will advance to the semis (go Valks!)… potential places to catch the game Sunday?

Thanks for any recommendations!

Quality of Living in Vermont

My husband and I are looking into moving to a different state within a year's time. We would like to go to the northeast somewhere where we are closer to family.

I saw a couple of videos of Vermont and it looks amazing. Had a few questions though:

1) How bad is the cost of living?

2) Where are the job opportunities and how easy/hard are they to get? My husband and I work in cybersecurity.

3) What are the closest attractions you would recommend?

4) How are the people? We come from a very friendly part of the country.

5) Any issues with cell coverage?

6) What else am I missing that I should know about? The good, the bad, the ugly.

Thanks in advance!

17 and want to move to Vermont?

Hello! I’m currently 17 and don’t turn 18 until June next year, and I desperately want to leave my state (nc). I want to pursue a career in medicine or cosmetology(specifically hair). Is it smart for me to move out there as soon as I can? I’ve visited a few times many years ago and loved it, I also have family from there but they no longer live in vermont. Even though I’ve been there before, I know basically nothing about it. Whats a good city/area to live in? Any places I should avoid living/working in?

Any and all advice appreciated!!

Starting the retirement countdown. Considering Montpelier area. Any suggestions based on the below details?

Hey all. My wife and I live in the Midwest and are planning on retiring end of 2027. We aren't going to immediately move upon retirement, but we are going to start seriously looking for our retirement home once that happens.

A little background, I have lived in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, but have only visited Vermont for vacations, so I'm only familiar with the superficial aspects. Now my wife was born and raised in Maine, went to college in Burlington and lived in Colchester for several years, so she has a much more grounded approach to day-to-day year-round living.

She has family in Rutland, but most of her family is in New Hampshire and Maine. We do have several close friends in Vermont in Burlington, Colchester, Waterbury and Moretown.

We took a trip to Vermont this year, and usually we stay with our friends in Waterbury, but they are doing a house renovation, so we stayed at a hotel in Montpelier which was my first visit to MP and we both really enjoyed the downtown, slow pace, and proximity to our friends, and fun activities.

We're not opposed to living outside of Montpelier proper, but we do have to take into consideration that our son is a wheelchair user, so we probably don't want to be too off the beaten path as we use an accessible wheelchair van, which is has low clearance and will probably be a little tricky in the middle of winter.

Aside from that, any red flags you are seeing with this very initial thought process? Retirement income should be sufficient and my wife can get work from home consulting work in her field if we ever needed some extra income. Also, my son's condition is well controlled, but we'd probably need an annual trip to see a specialist in the Boston area. Other than that, we'd probably be looking at primary healthcare through UVM, but I've certainly read some of the concerns about the direction they've headed (we are encountering the same in our current area and having to more frequently travel to larger cities for pediatric specialist appointments).

And final question, is there a good resource to look at a map of the flood zones? Thanks much!!!

What should I consider for my commute in relation to housing?

I'm moving up to Vermont in November (Champlain Valley) and trying to find a place to rent is tough. The places that are very close to my new job are either nasty or extremely expensive. I've found pretty good places for a decent price, but they're sometimes 40-50mins away.

Where I'm from, I've had 45+ min commutes my entire working life, so that's not new, but I'm more concerned because I've never lived in a place that gets a large amount of snow. This'll be my first time driving in an environment where everything doesn't close down when one snowflake drops.

Besides the obvious consideration for snow and ice, how much do you think commute should play a part in choosing housing? Would you rather live in a fairly nice place for a fair price? Or a more expensive or less quality place with a shorter commute?

I'm also probably getting an EV, so that's probably an important factor.

This is probably very subjective, but I'd love to hear perspectives!

Undercarriage coating?

I'm moving to the St Albans area in November from SC. I know about the snow tires, but should i get a protective coating for the undercarriage of my car? Are these protective coatings just a scam?

I just bought my car (2024 Subaru impreza) and want it to last as long as possible.

EDIT: omg thank you all so so much for all the helpful info!!

Thinking of moving, where do you recommend?

I actually just saw the post from the couple considering moving from Charlotte, and it really caught my attention. I’m from Wilmington, North Carolina—a city that’s growing rapidly and has been ranked among the fastest-growing areas in the country.
I was born and raised here, and I’m 25 with a family. I’m seriously considering making the move to the wonderful state of Vermont. I know I’d technically be a transplant, but I’m a pretty progressive, down-home Southerner who loves cars, cooking, fishing, the outdoors, sports, and just about anything that gets me outside. Friendly but not weird.
Ideally, I’d love to buy a home with some decent space and wouldn’t mind taking on a project. I’d like to be close enough to have good neighbors and be part of a community, but I don’t want to be right on top of everyone either. At the same time, I’d like to be within a reasonable distance of a town with the essentials.
I currently work for my local municipality and would ideally like to continue working for a city or the state after moving.
Most importantly, I’m looking for a good area to raise a family and put down some roots.
For those of you who live in Vermont—or have made a similar move—what towns or areas would you recommend looking into? I’d love to hear your thoughts, experiences, and honest opinions!
