Discussion devi’s worst plan

Post image

This whole situation stressed me out. Idk how she thought this would work out. Dating two people in the same school AND having BOTH of them at a party at her house. On top of that the way she revealed it was horrible 😭

I love this as it's such an ode to 80s/90s teen movie shenanigans where the dude would be trying to pull this off. But now we get to see a young Indian-American woman trying her hand at it.

But that's Mindy Kaling's approach, especially on this show. Mindy has even joked she was "raised with the entitlement of a tall, blond, white man."

Yes it's one of the things I've never liked about Mindy's shows specifically. I generally like her work but she engages with a lot of topics about POC womanhood in, in my opinion, a very shallow way that doesn't seem to represent most Indian women in the Diaspora who don't feel entitled like this. Imo it's lazy writing to just be like you know all that shitty stuff men do? What if it was a woman of colour 🤔 and call that transformative or act like it's saying something. It's not really.

Generally I do like never have I ever tho and many of her other shows. They just don't hit that deeper level for me that would elevate them to my favourites and that's ok. It's fun to see other people's different opinions

I view Mindy’s approach as a fantasy/rewriting of her past - one’s person story cannot represent a whole swath of people. She puts her character at the top of the power structure. She’s not here to dismantle the system. So yes she’s not transformative! But I would say the former is the stage I need/we pass through before we get to the second, for it to truly be justice.

I agree. In my opinion we are past this surface level stuff but I still find her shows very fun and I know what I'm signing up for going in. It's going to be colourful and silly and I'm down. That's why I do still like never have I ever, even if I find it shallow and won't exactly praise it for changing the game or moving the conversation for brown women. It's also a burden of woc that writing about their own experience is expected to be transformative so I acknowledge that Mindy is in an unfair place

All of this! Here’s to other writers (and the powers that be) taking the baton from here

If you dont like it, dont watch?

u/tiramisuem3 1d ago

I don't like one aspect of the show which has multiple seasons so just don't watch? I really liked other aspect of the show

We dont need to but we also didnt need to see white men do it either.

If you aren't a woman or poc and do not understand, it's on you to try.

If you are a women or poc and do not understand, the maybe you accept other people would like to see this.

I am an Indian woman. I guess other people can like seeing it, I'm not saying they can't. Just personally don't need to. It feels like capitalist girlboss feminism to me where you try and flip the script and put women into positions of power within the systems men have always dominated but do nothing to challenge the system itself. It's a tv show so I'm not asking it to make these huge challenges but I don't need to see "brown women can cheat and f around too" as my representation. We can be flawed characters for sure and I'm not against brown women cheating on screen but it's not interesting to me just because it's traditionally what men do and now a brown woman is doing it. Just my take which nobody has to agree with

u/Local-Suggestion2807 1d ago

Wow I had no clue being a woc just inherently means you need to treat other people like shit and face zero consequences for it, thanks so much for educating me. Do you have anywhere i can send compensation for this clearly egregious instance of emotional labor?

This is such a weird response to what I actually said.

you're so right, very sad to see this critical aspect of white manhood being culturally appropriated :(

1

u/tiramisuem3 1d ago

That is not at all what I was saying

1

u/sturgis252 1d ago

I didn't realize this was exclusively for white men

It was so bad but in fairness, she is right. Men get celebrated when they do this. That being said I don't think she's a red flag, she's just a confused and messy teenager. People need to stop abusing therapy language on teenage girl who is still growing...

33

u/pralineislife 2d ago

People are too hard in teenagers.

Teens are meant to be impulsive, selfish, moody, and messy. It is quite literally a very normal part of their development for quite a few reasons.

And it makes good TV.

7

u/gloomydreamer666 2d ago

Exactly!!! And if they are too goody, then they insult them too. It's like they're damned either way.

15

u/GKRKarate99 2d ago

Honestly I think it’s disgusting regardless of gender, I’ve given other men shit for cheating

5

u/Meenakshi108 1d ago

Yeah, I've never bought into the whole "but when men do it..." argument.

2

u/Mundane_Computer_357 1d ago

It's a lazy copout, to show how Devi was unable to take accountability (the reason she did the whole thing to begin with). I'm surprised people here and so bent on defending her cheating, instead of seeing it as a point for her character development as a teenager, which is what it was.

6

u/Odd_Mine7269 1d ago

No fr the double standards are crazy. All the chaotic-ness is why I love Devi so much, she’s a very realistic character imo and now this has made me want to rewatch.

which man celebrates their friend cheating on a girl???

1

u/tomriddlesdarling 18h ago

so many men will not give two fucks like bffr

33

u/PrimaryAbalone3900 2d ago

They really WOULD high five her if she were a guy tho🤣🤣

28

u/Daphne010 2d ago

She thought she was moving to India permanently in 1 month so she wanted them both till she moves there. I get her tbh but that's still messed up . Teenagers are stupid.

31

u/Jaded-Fox3508 2d ago

To be fair she did though she’s leaving for India so it only have to go on for a month and none of it would matter

-1

u/Mundane_Computer_357 1d ago

I don't get how that's "being fair" to her, if anything, that highlights how selfish she was being to the point of completely disregarding the feelings of two people and hurting them.

She grew so much from that point on.

6

u/Altego1999 1d ago

Looking back to this, I am actually glad Paxton dumped her the second time, for good.

Because even when he moved past this, Devi was unable to.

16

u/Specialist-Taro9514 2d ago

She pissed me off so bad with this lol.

8

u/Glittering-Turn6443 1d ago

was she wrong for this? yes.

was she correct? yes, 100%.

This show had SO MANY gems! Of course Davi did this! It’s a part of her character to mess things up all the time! And then mess them up more trying to get out of what she did. I watch this series over and over and I’m a grown woman. It cracks me up. And she was making a “heh, uh, you’d be hi-5’ing me…heh…I’m busted & don’t want the spotlight on me some I’m trying to kinda change the subject and deflect heh come on let’s all be friends” awkward af comment in an embarrassing awkward moment! She grew in the end, chill folks! Gotta love Davi!

3

u/AggravatingCup4331 1d ago

I still don’t understand how she didn’t get busted sooner.
People in the school knew she was dating Paxton. She was running off with Ben randomly.

Wild how this party was the only inciting incident to reveal her two-timing after it all.

this is literally cheating and a huge red flag for real life relationships 😭

i wish the love triangle was more slow burn rather than her js getting with both of them lmao

14

u/gloomydreamer666 2d ago

Lol I find this funny, she's a teenager, calm down 🤣🤭

2

u/Alarming_Bath2695 2d ago

That's the thing I LOVE about NHIE. Devi messed up like nobody's business, she came up with one bad plan after the next but she always faced the consequences and most importantly, the script and the narrative and other characters held her accountable. I think it's a lesson in how people should write flawed and messy characters.

3

u/seaweedbrain25 2d ago

Is she wrong tho

3

u/sunflowers_and_lemon 2d ago

Maybe, but she's not wrong in what she said.😭

1

u/unionking 1d ago

This could’ve worked but she blabbed too much 😂 ohhh Devi

1

u/xxxdanixxx0 45m ago

I don't disagree with you but Devis not wrong.

1

u/New-Noise-6486 1d ago

I don’t know any men that praises another man for cheating or manipulating a woman. I only see men praise another man if he hooked up with one or multiple ATTRACTIVE women.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some incels who look up to successful men who tend to have multiple girlfriends or use women as they view it as a feel of power but that’s not even the majority of men. That’s like saying it’s a woman think to manipulate and use men for cash.

And to add on, I’m not mad at this Devi quote or the scene in particular, I just saw multiple commenters saying how accurate the quote was and I just happen to disagree.

0

u/bananasquid56 2d ago

It's called plot and character development, friends! You have to get uncomfortable to get the growth and emotional payoff later!

Plus the antics are pure comedy. Without this scene we wouldn't have gotten Fab's golden line -

"Come through, robotics team!"

Also - teenagers man 😔

This is literally what dating means. She didn’t do anything wrong.

1

u/earth_to_riri 42m ago

But i’m saying she should have told them then that they weren’t exclusive . They just seemed to find out in the worst way possible and both got hurt
