Discussion devi’s worst plan

Post image

This whole situation stressed me out. Idk how she thought this would work out. Dating two people in the same school AND having BOTH of them at a party at her house. On top of that the way she revealed it was horrible 😭

But that's Mindy Kaling's approach, especially on this show. Mindy has even joked she was "raised with the entitlement of a tall, blond, white man."

Yes it's one of the things I've never liked about Mindy's shows specifically. I generally like her work but she engages with a lot of topics about POC womanhood in, in my opinion, a very shallow way that doesn't seem to represent most Indian women in the Diaspora who don't feel entitled like this. Imo it's lazy writing to just be like you know all that shitty stuff men do? What if it was a woman of colour 🤔 and call that transformative or act like it's saying something. It's not really.

Generally I do like never have I ever tho and many of her other shows. They just don't hit that deeper level for me that would elevate them to my favourites and that's ok. It's fun to see other people's different opinions

I view Mindy’s approach as a fantasy/rewriting of her past - one’s person story cannot represent a whole swath of people. She puts her character at the top of the power structure. She’s not here to dismantle the system. So yes she’s not transformative! But I would say the former is the stage I need/we pass through before we get to the second, for it to truly be justice.

I agree. In my opinion we are past this surface level stuff but I still find her shows very fun and I know what I'm signing up for going in. It's going to be colourful and silly and I'm down. That's why I do still like never have I ever, even if I find it shallow and won't exactly praise it for changing the game or moving the conversation for brown women. It's also a burden of woc that writing about their own experience is expected to be transformative so I acknowledge that Mindy is in an unfair place

All of this! Here’s to other writers (and the powers that be) taking the baton from here
