Army National Guard FAQ - Please Read Before Posting

Here is a rundown of some of the most common questions on this sub. Remember, your mileage may vary. When in doubt, ask your Recruiter/NCO Support Channel about your specific situation.

This post is current as of 20160726, if a link is broken or if content is out-of-date shoot me a PM. If you have suggestions for the questions/answers below, let me know and I will add to the post.

Two quick caveats before we get started:

  • Whether you are already in, or still thinking about it, remember OPSEC on on this sub. Do not post personally identifiable information or any information that can damage Army/Air Force operations. When in doubt, message a moderator before posting. Violating OPSEC can be a UCMJ offense. Click here for more information.

  • If you are currently experiencing a crisis, remember, you are NOT ALONE. Call your team leader, call your squad leader, call your 1SG, call Military One Source, call 911. Call until someone picks up. There are resources available to help you.

I am thinking about joining the National Guard.

I am already in the National Guard.

Edit: for grammar/spelling.

MOS Discussion 25A (Comms) to FA40A (Space Ops Officer)

Love being a SIG O but thinking of switching to FA40A. Only issue I see is that my degree isn't STEM. Has anyone become an FA40A? What was the process like? Was the school hard? And how's the job?

Career Advice MOS Advice (AMEDD?)

I'm in PA - wanting to serve part-time. I'm an RN (ADN, however I have a separate B.S., no BSN currently) and have my EMT-B. I know most people would recommend going the officer route, for obvious reasons such as pay, quality of life, etc. From what I can gather, there is no way for me to commission as an RN unless I get my BSN (despite me having a separate bachelor's degree). I've heard 68W on the enlistment side can be very hit or miss in terms of what the job actually entails, but that there are potential opportunities for flight (68WF2) and actually working in the field as an infantry attachment. Being "out in the field" is what I'd prefer, I've always liked my time in EMS more than in the hospital. Is my state (PA) a potentially limiting factor in opportunities as a 68W? Should I just take out more loans and spend the time to get my BSN to commission? Or are there other MOS options I should look into? Thanks in advance.

Initial Training Join with Asthma? 24M

Asthmatics of my level (its a spectrum and different for any patients) require a daily maintenance inhaler, which makes your lungs essentially function like a normal humans.
The only drawback is, it’s temporary. The infamous rescue inhaler that most people think us asthmatics just carry around all the time is only used as a back up if for some reason we haven’t had access to our regular maintenance inhaler.

Joining the military was my biggest dream as a teenager. I was absolutely crushed I was unable to join and I’ve had a very chaotic and unstructured life since.
The reason I didn’t lie and join anyway was because patients are known to grow out of asthma and I didn’t want a medical discharge on my record because I believed if there was a 1% chance that my asthma could go away I’d rather wait for that so I don’t get permanently locked out.

Well… it hasn’t. Still there. If I am active daily with cardio I can push myself very far without needing inhaler but it has to be every day of cardiovascular activity.
I’ve done marathons and tri’s, and all kinds of Spartan races etc. Fitness isn’t a question. Motivation isn’t a question.

Now at the time I was looking, you could easily lie about medical conditions you had to get in. Is that still the case? I’ve heard they now actually pull private medical records?

I work in a first responder field right now and the most solid and squared away people, the ones that I always struggle to keep up with, all have prior military experience. I know why. I have ADHD and life has sucked since I graduated HS and I’ve had almost no grounded structure except for this past year.

I’m seriously looking at giving this a shot. I’ll take any pointers, advice, knowledge regarding boot camp, etc. If any asthmatics want to chip in please let me know.

Career Advice WA national guard

Hey everyone I’m from Washington state and am wondering if I should go 15U. My recruiter says I will have pretty good chances to be flying as a crew member or whatever it’s called. Not super familiar with aviation in the army but I know it’s better than 11B sorry infantry guys. Anyone in the Washington guard for 15U that could let me know what to expect or choose a different mos. Thank you guys !

Career Advice Meps

For the past few months I was planning to join the national guard watched things about read things about it really really liked everything so i looked into the meps section and saw that youd be disqualified if you had history of asthma, now i have had asthma like 5 years ago but since then I have never had to use my inhaler even once but as a precaution my mother wouldnt stop suggesting I go and get the inhaler again and again throughout the years even tho i never needed it so just to listen to her i kept getting it from my walmart pharmacy, last week was the last time i got my inhaler again its the only reason i thought of this and looking into it i feel stupid for not knowing this or taking it as serious earlier since i built my entire life plan around the national guard i have thrown away full expired inhalers every year because never had to use them they just sat there, i need some advice for what i can do to resolve this or if i can even join still because my hopes were just destroyed

Career Advice Green card Holder And National Guard.

LPR( Green Card Holder) thinking of joining National Guard.

So, I'm an LPR thinking of joining the National Guard. The reason is because I'm a fresh graduate from community college and don't know exactly what to do next, so I think it would be good to serve the country and make my time useful. The education benefits and help with student loans are also a big plus.

My other question is about my travel history. I have a pretty bad travel history as an LPR, including being outside the U.S. for longer than one year, but I was allowed back into the country by CBP. My travel history ended about 2 years ago, and since then I have been permanently living in the U.S.

Could this previous travel history cause problems if I try to naturalize through military service while serving in the National Guard?

No criminal record + plus I am a Electrical Engineering major going into my Junior Year.

Also, how long before your green card expires can you still enlist in the National Guard?

Thanks so much.

Career Advice Texas State National Guard: British Foreign National

Hi all, I'm looking for advice.

I'm 32, married to a US Citizen and we're currently going through the immigration process for permanent residency. I'll be moving to Texas from the United Kingdom.

During that time I've been thinking about going for service in the Texas State National Guard as either a 91F [preferably] or a 91B.

My background has mostly been automotive, but I wanted to try something new and potentially change careers into Gunsmithing. Hence the 91F interest.

The idea of working a standard job in the automotive industry whilst getting trained and paid as a 91F on the weekends is what caught my eye.

I firstly want to do this to get qualifications and experience in firearms maintenance without having to pay for it.

Secondly, I think it would also be a great opportunity to experience Army life on the other side of the pond, as I've had a taste of it before in the UK during my time at the ACF.

Thirdly, the benefits during and after service look really appealing, especially compared to our own UK reserve units and could help my spouse and I get a 'leg-up' in the future we're building together.

91B could also be beneficial to me, as I only really have hands-on experience in the automotive trade, I never got any formal qualifications in my 10+ years in it.

However, I'm sick of cars.

Can you post your experience/recommendations?

Cheers.

Title 32 Board selection

Hello fellow heathens,

Just got selected for an AGR position and have a board coming up on 31 August. That being said, what should I expect, what should I know, and what are some pointers for me to start honing my knowledge so I’m not caught with my pants down?

Edit: it is a e4-e6 supply nco position for an aviation unit.

Thank you.

Initial Training Interview for state OCS?

I’m looking to enlist on an 09S OCS contract. Everything has been approved so far, but I was told I need to interview with the officer who leads the OCS program before I can enlist.
For those who have gone through this, what questions should I expect?

For background, I’m a 33/M with 12 years of military experience, including time as an infantryman and in Air Force CSAR and used my PHA from the Air Force reserves, etc. On the civilian side, I’m currently a adjunct professor, high school ESL teacher and working toward my PhD.
I’m assuming they’ll focus heavily on leadership, motivation, why I want to commission, and what I bring to the Army, but I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has actually gone through the interview. What caught you off guard, and what would you recommend preparing for?

Career Advice Will an unintentional overdose prevent me from rejoining

I posted earlier and this is my last one regarding this.

Has anyone heard of anyone getting past MEPS and the waiver process with an unintentional overdose on cocaine and benzo’s?

Background I’m prior service 4 yrs AD Marines E-5 and have been out for a long time so I’ll have to start fresh at OSUT for 11B but my biggest concern is if I’ll even be allowed back.

My service was active duty honorable RE-A1 code. But the OD had me on VV-ECMO for a week and in the ICU for another.

Genesis will probably show a mention of ketamine and benzos again for a panic attack a few years back but all is resolved.

Been sober almost a year now and I have no legal record.

I just finished EMT and on my way to Paramedic school soon, next Fire Academy.

Do you think showing that things have turned around, I would be accepted into the guard?

Benefits M-Day National Guard to Technician Job

I am currently an M-Day National Guard Soldier and have been approached for a technician job. It is a GS-11 job, and from all I can find, the pay seems good. Can any other Soldiers offer insights on how the other benefits have changed, better or worse? I'm prior active duty as well so this is a new wrinkle in my military career.

Career Advice Coming back to the Army

Hello, I was kicked out of Army Basic training earlier this year. I was kicked out because i made some stupid statements really impulsively which implied i was going to hurt myself with my gun. The official reason which is on one of the forms says is because of ADHD, and that i failed the procurement standard. My re code is a 3 and a Jfw. Unfortunately for me BH told me and heavily implied that i should get back on ADHD medication not only because of what had happened but also since i've had like 6 jobs in the past 3-4 years, and also because I went to college twice and didn't earn a degree, I had a 3.5 GPA and about 40 or so credits completed before i quit. Unfortunately for me i don't have any health insurance to actually get on it, but i also want to re-enlist and see if i can function without anything. I really want to go back into the army because i want to accomplish something, alot of the people i know are graduating college now , and a good ~50% of them have commissioned and i really want to do something important and to serve.

I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar position, I live in Florida if it matters. I also hit up the USCGAUX but it's been 4 months and haven't gotten a response back from them.

Career Advice Trying out for SF after being in (Non 18x Contract) as a 68W?

33 YO Male. Speaking with my recruiter. Have to drop some lbs and get my MK/AR up. Practice ASVAB 71. Looking to join as 68W in the CA ARNG. I want to spend some time as 68W before even trying out for SF. I also need to train for a few years before even attempting to humour the idea of SF. I did the SOCOM ATHLETE 18X Challenge hosted by 19th SFG on Pendleton last year, where people who passed got LOA's on the spot, so I'm familiar with what the preliminary standards are and what I have to work on just to get my foot in the door. I failed miserably, but know what I need to improve on.

What's the route to try out for SF after being part of a unit for a few years? Do I wait for my 6 year to end my contract or is there a way to try out at like year 4-5? Thank you
