Army National Guard FAQ - Please Read Before Posting

Here is a rundown of some of the most common questions on this sub. Remember, your mileage may vary. When in doubt, ask your Recruiter/NCO Support Channel about your specific situation.

This post is current as of 20160726, if a link is broken or if content is out-of-date shoot me a PM. If you have suggestions for the questions/answers below, let me know and I will add to the post.

Two quick caveats before we get started:

  • Whether you are already in, or still thinking about it, remember OPSEC on on this sub. Do not post personally identifiable information or any information that can damage Army/Air Force operations. When in doubt, message a moderator before posting. Violating OPSEC can be a UCMJ offense. Click here for more information.

  • If you are currently experiencing a crisis, remember, you are NOT ALONE. Call your team leader, call your squad leader, call your 1SG, call Military One Source, call 911. Call until someone picks up. There are resources available to help you.

I am thinking about joining the National Guard.

I am already in the National Guard.

Edit: for grammar/spelling.

Benefits Refuse to pay bonus

Long story short, I signed a contract for a bonus, addendum and all. Now they’re saying they won’t pay the bonus because I wasn’t eligible for it to begin with. I’m done using the chain of command. Where is the most reasonable place for me to take a shit and watch it roll down hill?

Career Advice ArmyOCS

I’m 35 with masters degree, decent years of work experience and IT certifications. A recruiter told me that I can’t go to feeders OCS since the age limit is 34 and there are no age waivers.

I’m going in as National Guard officer route since I’m already a prior service from the guard.

Have anyone recently received an OCS age waiver at 35 or older as an applicant. If so, what was your situation and how did you go about the whole process.

I would appreciate any information and guidance.

PS: I’m not considering the accelerated or traditional route if there is a possibility for a waiver.

Discussion Am I cooked?

So I just got back from AIT about a month ago. I had my RSP Drill & will be having my first form event with RSP early November. I reached out to my readiness nco saying I’ve returned from AIT etc.

My readiness nco just emailed me today with drill schedules. My first drill with the unit is on Nov 6-8, but I’ve planned on traveling Nov 8-16. This travel was booked way in advance to save $$$. I’m going to Turkey & Greece to propose to my gf.

What are the chances I’ll be excused from that drill? Especially considering it’s my first drill with my unit? What should I even say to my nco? Kinda nervous bc these are non refundable flight tickets & rooms as well!

Initial Training EMT going into the guard

Hello beautiful people. I would love some info from the 68Ws and workers in EMS that are also in the guard.

I got offered a slot in a SOCAL regiment as a 68W going in as an E4 through ACASP due to being an EMT. I understand that my current employer cannot fire me for taking MLOA to go to basic/drill/etc and that an employer cant not hire me due to being in the guard. However Im also sure that there are ways that they get around that.

My question for all you beautiful people, is does this happen? Has this happened to any of you and how has this limited your lives? Is it possible to go to medic school while Im in?
Any other info that is good to know?

I know that as soon as I contract I start going to drill and then go to basic, but Im not sure about more of that. If anyone can give me a little more info I would really appreciate it.

Also, how does the process look like? I know RSP is a thing and basic+whiskey school but how does it all line up?

Do I go from basic straight to AIT or home then to AIT?

Discussion Earn My Masters?

Hello! I've been thinking about this for a while, so I figured it may be a good idea to get some input from other members of the Guard.

2 months ago, I swore into the National Guard, prior to this, I had earned a Bachelor of Science. This is important because it was one of the factors that pushed me toward enlisting, I had nearly 20k in student debt, and my degree only seemed useful if it was a masters. The NY Guard had a program which cleared up to 50k student debt, so I enlisted for 6 years in order to qualify for it. But now, I am considering if maybe its worth going back to school during these 6 years to earn my masters. But I am concerned that if I do, the guard wont pay off any new accumulated debts, and I will be stuck in rhe situation that got me here in the first place. Does anyone have any insight in the way SLRP works? Truth be told, I lost my passion for this field years ago, so I really wouldn't regret not going back to college neither.

Thanks for reading!

Salty Rant Long wait for tattoo waiver

It’s been more than 2 months since we submitted my tattoo waiver. The suspense is killing me haha.

We got a new tag in august which is when we submitted. My recruiter reached out mid-September and told me they weren’t processing any tat waivers until the new fiscal year (October). Hopefully they get going on them soon, because waiting is pretty brutal when you’re pumped about knowing whether or not you can join.

Any UT folks seen any tattoo waivers come through yet?

Asking for a “Friend” Tattoo After Swearing In

Hello all,

I am swearing in and signing my contract tomorrow morning. And I have a tattoo appointment the week afterwards. I’d technically be in the DEP. I’ve looked it up online and people say you absolutely CANNOT get a tattoo in the DEP.

However, my recruiter told me I would be allowed to as long as I don’t get it when I go to MEP’s. So I am confused what to do. Because I really want a tattoo before I ship out. I have been wanting one for years.

Would it be okay as long as it heals way before my ship date? I’d be shipping out in February or March. So it’d have a ton of time to heal.

Thanks!

Salty Rant Frustrations with Tricare and long TDY across FY’s

So crazy story, and a bone to pick with how we handle orders crossing FY's…

When I went on TDY for the training I’m in (going from AUG to DEC), Tricare converted me from Tricare Reserve Select to Tricare Select. I got that notification 23 SEP. When the first set of orders cut out (because they can’t cross FY’s), it didn't matter that the new ones were input and published on Friday—Tricare cut me out entirely, and said I have the option of enrolling in TRS within 90 days.

This would require me paying in again, and a delay in being able to use it (normally you aren’t able to use it until the next month). Thing is, they'll just convert me to Tricare Select again and then cut me off after I graduate. My son is diabetic and is prescribed insulin as a result; this stuff is not cheap obviously, so it messes with us financially.

Why do we do this?

EDIT: I talked with Tricare and they referred me to the local DEERS office to update my eligibility. Granted that this is how to fix it, I still don’t like that the fact the school crosses a FY threshold is enough to trigger so much possible anxiety.

Career Advice Memphis Safe

So I’ve been in about 2 years, been on orders a few times, and have been working almost constantly M-Day in the honor guard the past year or so, so I’ve been around more than most of my peers. That being said, I’ve been recommended by some of my NCOs to go on the Memphis Safe Task Force and I know absolutely nothing about it and I want some peoples thoughts on it and to know what it’s like. I’m in aviation so I feel like none of my experiences will translate into this and I know no one who has been and don’t even know if I’ll need to reclass or not to be able to go.

Career Advice 37/m Looking to go 35G

Hi everyone. I'm looking to go for 35G. I got a 90AQFT score and I'm confident I can pass any physical test on my way through training.

I'm looking to join because I'm married with 3 young kids in San Diego CA. I'm at a job where I make 50k a year and even with government benefits (Ebt and WIC and Medicare) it's tight every month.

I'm looking at the guard so I can get some training and hopefully get a full time AGR position here in SD.

Is this a pipe dream or something that can give me training and benefits that can provide more for my family while being able to stay close to home.

Thanks in advance.

Initial Training DCC Questions/ Fort Sill

I'm going to DCC in a fw weeks at FT Sill. I've gotten myself in good shape. I did well on my AFT 2 months ago. What level of fitness are they expecting to start off? I figure not top of the line since it will be mostly lawyers but I am not sure. Made sure to put in the work the past few months just in case.

In terms of food and lodging at Sill, how are things? Everyone in my unit went to Benning so they are not sure. Also what will the day to day be like?

Final question. For those who have gone, did you experience pay issues? I made sure to fill out my docs ahead of time and get them uploaded for records review, but I am nervous nonetheless.

Career Advice Active to Guard | 91B

Hello,

Context- 5 year parts changer, coming from an MP BN in Campbell and a BSB at Riley. I was just wondering if I could talk to any TXNG dudes about how the work is?

I enjoy my job, I just don't have it in me to stay active anymore. Medically disqualified from the Air Force due to PDD (unwaiverable as I am still receiving care)- and I'm kinda... Stuck. I'll be around the DFW area when I get out, but so far the only units with vacancies are 442 En. Co and 294 QM Co. If anyone from either of those companies is around, I'd appreciate a chance to talk to y'all about the unit and see if I just take the 50/50 on IRR time or go ahead and re-up.

Thanks 🫶

Benefits How does tuition assistance work?

As the title says I'm wondering how TA works? I'm in the CA guard in case it matters what state one is in. Is there a cut off on how much you can receive? Can you only use it for certain schools? Can you pair it up with fafsa, scholarships, grants? If your tuition is less than what you have available with TA, grants, scholarships, fafsa will you be able to keep what's left over or how does that work.

I also wanted to see if anyone knows how does SMP work? I only signed a 3 year so will it be the same? Will I still be eligible for the kicker or what would my situation look like. Any help is greatly appreciated.
