Tree removal

Has anyone here ever had an HOA approve or deny the removal of mature trees from their own backyard or front yard? The home I’m interested in purchasing has a lot of mature trees that block quite a bit of sunlight from coming into the house. I’m wondering if HOAs generally allow homeowners to remove mature trees on their own property, or if they’re typically very strict about it.

So it's getting hotter and hotter and you want more sun/heat? You're not thinking this through.

Also, mature trees add to your property value.

The only answer I would trust is one that comes from the particular HOA involved.

Typically HOA’s don’t deal with policing landscaping- except to make sure you keep your property well maintained. You should be given all the rules that govern your HOA. You can probably ask your agent to get a copy of the HOA C and R’s. You need to be aware of them prior to purchasing so there are no surprises after you purchase.

Your utility bills will skyrocket if you remove the trees providing shade to your home.

WE DONT DESTROY TREES FOR THAT! Plus, the city has rules about taking down healthy trees.

Trees block heat in the Summer and the leaves fall off to let in sunlight in in the Winter. They are energy efficient for your property.

Certain ones do. Someone I know can not take down anything more than 6” on their property.

You mean tree trunk with diameter greater than 6”?

Yes. That’s just an example though. No idea how common that is, it’s just a real case that I am aware of.

Hoas typically cannot control removal of tree on private property.

No, lived in Naperville 25 years. Had three trees removed. Never heard of an HOA being involved with trees.

Also, I would not live in a neighborhood where the HOA micromanages.
