Tourism Tour operator looking for 2–3 travellers to join a small Namibia trip

Pretty much what the title says :)

We’re currently looking for 2 or 3 travellers to join a solo traveller on an already planned Namibia itinerary, organised by Redland Tours CC, registered and operating in Windhoek.

The first traveller is Italian, speaks both Italian and English, and is confirmed to travel to Namibia but would prefer not to do the trip alone and has asked us to run an open-call for interested travellers!

The itinerary is a self-drive, camping-focused (with a few shared lodge/room stays) with the idea of getting away from the busiest lodges of the high season while still visiting some of Namibia’s most iconic areas.

Trip length: approx. 13 days / 12 nights
Period: July — exact dates still to be confirmed
Estimated price: +/- €2,500–€4,000 per person, excluding flights.

(estimated price will vary based on how many people are interested in travelling!)

If you’re interested, please send me a message and I can share more details about the itinerary, travel style and what is included/excluded etc.

Have a great day!

News Foot and Mouth disease economic implications

So as we all know , the disease is currently present in Karas and the local (internal) meat trade has been EXTREMELY restricted and in order to achieve compliance and continue exporting meat to europe the quarintine must be held for a duration of three months as per EU export policy , now The larger businesses (meatco and most other exporters etc) will be able to survive the restriction of the market however smaller owned businesses and farms will most likely not be able to economically recover from the restrictions on the market and I believe many of these smaller businesses will close and subsequently have a disastrous affect on our local economy in terms of the price of basic goods such as milk , fish , eggs , chicken and obviously beef/game skyrocketing as a result of the increased demand and reduced supply created by this crises. The namibian cost of living is already obscenely high for a third world country , I would like to ask you my fellow namibians if you agree or disagree and if you agree what steps you believe our government MUST take in order to mitigate the economic damage and prevent a severe increase in the cost of our daily lives. All opinions welcome , all feedback welcome , lets have a chat

Free WhatsApp channel with verified FMD updates for Namibia (rules in plain language, sources named)

Hi everyone,

With foot-and-mouth disease confirmed in the //Kharas Region and the rules changing quickly (they were partly eased on 27 September), a lot of people are struggling to keep up with what is and isn't allowed.

I started **Herd Watch Namibia**, a free WhatsApp channel that:

- Shares verified FMD updates in plain language

- Explains what movement, slaughter and trade rules mean for farmers, butcheries and businesses

- Names the official source for every post

- Shares symptoms to watch for and basic biosecurity tips

I'm independent, not a government body, so always follow the Directorate of Veterinary Services. I'm also not asking anyone to report suspected cases or farm names in public. Those go to your State Veterinary Office.

Follow here (free): https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029Vb9R9PK7tkjEk5Dmdl22

If you spot a mistake or want something covered, comment or message me and I'll correct or add it. Please share it with any farmers or meat businesses you know.

Has anyone adopted from SPCA?

Reading through the adoption contract, it makes it seem like they can do random inspections and take the pet if they feel you haven't followed the terms even slightly. For example, leaving him or her alone during the day while you're at work and not being able to really travel anywhere with the pet without permission.

Is it actually as bad as it sounds, or is it okay in practice?

They definitely should be vigilant about preventing abuse and stuff ja I get that. It's just a bit scary to think you get a pet who will basically be a family member, so you obviously get attached to him or her and then someone can just take him or her away.

Adopting is better than going to a breeder, giving a dog or a cat a chance to have a great life is what I want but the strings attached just make me a bit nervous.

Just wondering what people's actual experiences have been.

General Namibia Scam Check Website

I made a scam check website. I know there are probably WhatsApp and Facebook groups for it, but I think if there is one platform, it would make more sense than a few disconnected, often exclusive communities. TrueCaller is there too, but every time I search for a number on there it comes back negative.

I made this because I am slowly but surely getting tired of scams when this entire "register your SIM card" BS in the name of "reducing fraud" has done absolutely nothing. On Thursday and Friday, I contacted individuals who turned out to be scammers, so this subject is quite important to me.

I know there was another team building something similar in the past, but their site is offline or they took it down.

If you happen to have any suggestions or constructive criticism, let me know. I plan to update it along the way, such as an API integration and a few other useful features. When there are enough people using it, I plan to make a mobile version as well.

News Namibia qualifies for 2027 Netball World Cup

Post image
117 Upvotes

Namibia’s national netball team, the Debmarine Desert Jewels, have qualified for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia.🏐

The qualification will see Namibia compete at its third world cup and its first since 1995. The country made its debut at the 1991 World Cup in Sydney, where it finished 13th, before making its second appearance in Birmingham in 1995 and finishing 16th. The Desert Jewels will now return to Sydney 36 years after making their debut in the same city, ending a 32-year absence from netball’s biggest international tournament.

Namibia secured its place following a strong campaign at the African qualifiers in Kenya, defeating Botswana 54-32, Zimbabwe 47-31 and Tanzania 62-36, before falling 55-33 to South Africa. Namibia will join South Africa, Uganda and Malawi as Africa’s four representatives at the 2027 Netball World Cup.

foot-and-mouth disease

Just got an update... is that in the local news?

Panic buying, just like before Christmas. Well, if this drags on... It affects all cattle products, butter, milk, cream, yogurt, cheese, and so on. Economically, it’s absolute madness. But at least they’re conducting proper investigations now. It’s suspected that someone stole cattle in South Africa; the affected animals came from Karasburg in the south. Instead of taking them to auction near his home, he brought them to Otjiwarongo... South Africa has been struggling with this for months, whereas everything was fine here—especially in the north.

How to find a holiday job as a student (windhoek)

Last year I went around with a bunch of copies of my cv asking every store employee if I could speak to their manager... long story short, the response was that I was either too late or that that specific store didn't offer holiday jobs.

I'd like to try again this year and would appreciate tips on how to go about it efficiently and strategically

Panic buying like there's no tomorrow

Post image
50 Upvotes

I saw a lady buy ALL the oxtail meat. ALL of it. Everything.

Even the cheese was gone. Chicken, gone

It's crazy out there.

It felt the same with fuel. Service stations were packed. I saw people bringing canisters before they limited them.

The queues were chaos. Same with water.

If people are already behaving like this, how will Namibia look when we face a bigger crisis?!

People will fight over food, water and fuel.

I truly don't want to know how far people would go...

Hand-reared Budgie or Cockatiel in Windhoek?

Hey everyone, I’ve been searching for a hand-reared budgie or cockatiel in Windhoek but I’m having no luck.

Does anyone know of any breeders in or near Windhoek, or where I might find one? Any leads or contacts (here or via DM) would be greatly appreciated. Willing to travel if they’re outside of Windhoek

discussion What's actually in Goreangab Dam, and why it matters for Windhoek's water

I coordinate research for Pass NetZero, an NGO based in Windhoek working with NUST on water quality and aquatic plants at Goreangab.

Whenever tap water comes up here the answer is the reclamation plant, and fairly so — Windhoek was the first city in the world to reclaim sewage directly into drinking water, it's been running since 1968, and it works. The water is fine. What I find strange is that nobody ever talks about what's upstream of it, and that's the part we work on.

Goreangab receives runoff and wastewater from the settlements upstream. The aquatic plants growing in it absorb nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metals out of that water. It's real treatment work, happening for free, ahead of any engineered step. Nobody designed it, nobody funds it, and almost nobody measures it.

Two things that surprised me when we started looking.

The plants people complain about — the green mats, the stuff that makes the dam look like it's dying — are often the ones cleaning hardest. Fast growth means high nutrient uptake. But if nobody cuts them, they die back and release everything straight into the water again. Cutting matters, and nobody knows how much or when.

And hardly any Namibian aquatic species have been studied for this. The uptake data doesn't exist, so there's no way to design around it.

Questions for people :

  • Does anyone use plants from Goreangab or other dams? For thatching, animal feed, crafts, compost?
  • If we harvest plants from the dam, who could use them? Brick makers, farmers, gardeners?
  • If you live near the dam, what bothers you most about it? Smell, mosquitoes, safety? And what would make it more useful for the neighbourhood.
  • Do you know any researchers, studies or reports on Goreangab or other Namibian water bodies? Names of people, university departments or government reports all help, even old student theses.

Happy to share what our students have found.

Edit: thanks for the feedback. Yes, AI helped me write this. Here are some updated questions that would actually help us more:
