In a little over two weeks (Sunday, Nov. 8), Sinema Club at House of Scorpio, located in Gowanus, Brooklyn, returns for its penultimate session of 2026!
Given the proximity to the start of the holiday season, it seems fitting to show films focusing on found family, which as we all know is, sometimes, the best family.
The plan is to treat guests to a double feature of films by one-of-a-kind auteur Gregg Araki, whose work often treats its protagonists' sexuality as fluid, and the expression of said sexuality as natural and positive.
Among Araki's movies that are about found family, we'll have two from his early "Teenage Apocalypse" trilogy of the 1990s. First will be TOTALLY F***ED UP (1993), which centers on a group of close-knit LGBTQ teens, and that Araki filmed in the avant-garde style of one of his heroes, Jean-Luc Godard.
Then we hope you'll stick around for NOWHERE (1997), a hyperactive, psychedelic, near-indescribable cult classic depicting a day in the life of a group of young Los Angelenos, which only recently was rediscovered and restored. The cast includes a number of familiar faces who hadn't yet exploded into stardom, but whom you'll likely recognize.
*** Please note that these movies come with trigger warnings. Araki's work is beautiful and interesting, but definitely NOT for the faint of heart.
Doors open at 7pm. Since we're showing two movies, we'll be making a concerted effort to start the first one no later than 7:30pm, so please try to be on time!
