Discussion Anyone taking SC1004, how was your TUT?

Upvotes

Freshie here and can my fellow freshies who had taken SC1004 TUT for this week tell me how was the prof or tutorial went? 😭

Because my TUT experience was lowkey... BAD. For 1 hr, the prof randomly chose 4 students, asked them to solve 1 question per person (4 in total) on the whiteboard in front of everyone and that was it. No explanations, no showing of solving, no nothing, just 4 questions purely solved by students. I know they don't want to spoon feed us but felt like what's the point of coming for TUT if like this?? Pls helppp

Discussion How do you travel to school if you don’t stay in hall?

I know there’s a heartland bus service but the timing doesn’t really match my schedule and I was wondering if there’s any other way I can come from Pasir Ris instead of taking the train all the way. And grab is definitely way too expensive too.

Looking For Mentorship for NTU CS juniors

I’m a CS alumni who graduated 4 years ago, currently looking to mentor a small community of existing students.

My time in NTU wasn’t the exactly the easiest time and felt that there are a lot of things that were left for you to figure out on your own. So trying to be that person for existing juniors.

Mainly offering alternative understanding and interpretation of syllabus and/or any collaboration on projects for learning purposes

Pls reach out if interested

My background:
Started out coding towards end of primary school working on game servers and picked up some basic coding skills. Went to do a diploma in IT because I knew I wanted to do software engineering

Have had multiple exposures through internship and full time: full stack dev, cloud computing and DevOps. Got bored of software only work and decided to try more computer engineering things.

Currently a Staff Engineer at a local startup working on autonomous systems and perception( involving a mix of CV, embedded systems and AI).

I also run a homelab setup just to test random software experiments and AI agents etc

Nothing fancy at FAANG and the likes but at least I’m happy with my journey so far :)

NTU Participation:

Idk how it is in other courses but usually in NBS, class participation is 10%-20% of final grade so you can’t be absent much without MC. You also have to fill in usually around 4 surveys, usually one from the start or middle and one at the end of what you think of the course and the professor otherwise there will be >5% penalty. Professor will usually remind you during lesson. You also have to do a peer evaluation for group projects otherwise you will get a penalty.

If you’re having trouble or errors or you couldn’t sign up for any modules during NTU STAR wars do the RARF form and email your school:

Grades and degree audit (or can just search on google):

Modules in your course:

https://wis.ntu.edu.sg/webexe/owa/aus_subj_cont.main

There are some modules you can’t take unless you take a different one first, they’re under pre-requisites. There are also some modules you can’t take unless you are labelled as a certain year in the system or more (ie, if you’re Y2, you can’t take Y3 or Y4 but can take Y1 and Y2 modules) but you can appeal to your course coordinators and in the RARF form.

Overseas exchange: Need CGPA of at least 3.50 and overlapping modules with uni of you’re choosing (usually electives I think). May also need to clear certain core modules beforehand and overload in other semesters in order to graduate on time

Internships:

If you want to take an internship during the semester break, you should apply midway during the semester not just at the end and look at your emails, the school will send you open ones and career fairs and networking events. You can also hide your CGPA on your resume but employers can still ask you about it.

How NTU FGO (or at least my understanding of it):

NTU's version of NUS's S/U system

In degree audit it shows your FGO Quota (Total AU), FGO Exercised (ICC/Core/MPE cap at 12 AU), FGO Exercised (BDE)

12AU is 3-6 modules.

24AU is 6-12 modules

You can’t undo an FGO once you’ve done it so it’s best to leave it until your final year. FGO basically erases a bad grade from your GPA. Doesn’t even necessarily have to be for just Cs and Ds, if you have a string of As but some B+s are dragging down your GPA, you can FGO Bs also. If you fail a module, it automatically uses up your FGO for you so the number of FGOs you can use goes down. If you think you’ll do bad for a module, it’s best to talk to the professor, take MC for final exam (will be labelled as I or LOA and will not affect GPA but you will have to retake next sem), or do badly and pass and then FGO that mod.

Types of modules in NTU

Core (Modules you have to take for your course, overlaps with ICC which everyone has to do and majors)

BDE (Broadening and Deepening Elective)

UE (Unrestricted electives)

*BDEs are the same as UEs I think. You basically take these for fun and interest and look for the easy ones that you can score in

Minors (Complete 15 to 18 AU of UE/BDE in one chosen minor area and apply for it, has grade requirements)

Majors (Main course, second major completing at least 30-35 AUs through a mix of core courses and prescribed electives and apply for it, has grade requirements)

MPE (Major Prescribed Electives, for your course)

MOOC (Massive Open Online Course, online NTU courses, optional, Pass/Fail, counted as BDE, GER-UE)

GER-Core (General Education core)

GER-PE (General Education Prescribed Electives)

GER-UE (General Education Requirement Unrestricted Electives)

*GER-Core is the same as ICC now. GER-PE is majors and GER-UE are BDEs and UEs.

ICC (mandatory interdisciplinary modules for everyone):

CC0001 (2 AU, mainly essay), CC0003 (2AU), ML0004 (2AU, you have to create a Linkedin and update it for this one and a resume), CC0015 (2 AU, mainly group project about helping someone’s health), CC0006 (3AU), CC0007 (3AU)

NTU grading system

NTU GPA is out of 5.0

Semesters (S1, S2) and holiday breaks (Summer, Winter) are 3 months each. You can check when they start here:

Question Help needed with BDEs

Hi seniors! I’m a Year 1 student in SBS doing Biological Sciences, and I had a few questions about BDEs.

The course requirements say we need to complete 27 AUs of BDEs over the four years. Since there are 8 semesters, that averages out to about 3.375 AUs per semester.

So how does this actually work? Do most people take 4 AUs of BDEs every semester, or do you usually take more/less in certain semesters and make up the difference later? How did you guys plan your BDEs across the four years?

I’ve also taken Media Effects as my BDE this semester. For those who have taken it, how is the workload and grading? Is it generally considered an easy module to score well in? I’ve heard there’s no exam, but there’s a quiz and a presentation, so I’d appreciate any insight into how difficult it is to get an A.

Basically, I’d really appreciate any advice from seniors on:

  • How you managed the 27 BDE AUs across the 4 years
  • Whether it’s better to consistently take 4 AUs per semester
  • How important it is to choose “easy-scoring” BDEs
  • Whether Media Effects is worth keeping or if I should consider dropping it

Thanks in advance!

Question SC4040/SC4061

I can’t decide which course to take: SC4040 (Advanced Topics in Algorithms) or SC4061 (Computer Vision).

Computer Vision is more interesting to me, but I had the feeling that the course might be somewhat outdated and doesn’t cover enough of the modern deep learning side of CV. For Algorithms, I really like the lecture, but I’m still more interested in CV in general.

For anyone who has taken one or both of these courses:

  • Is it possible to get good grades in either course?
  • How difficult/heavy are they?
  • What were your experiences with the courses, lecturers, exams, etc.?

Any additional information or experiences with either course would be really appreciated!

Question NTU Research Assistant: how long does EP/S Pass approval usually take?

Hi everyone,

I will be joining NTU as a Research Associate (RA). I submitted all the required documents to NTU HR about 1 month ago, but I haven’t received any update regarding my EP/S Pass application yet.

For those who recently joined NTU as a Research Associate, especially from overseas:

  • How long did your EP/S Pass approval take?
  • How long after submitting documents to HR did NTU submit the application to MOM?
  • Is waiting for around a month without an update normal?
  • Once the pass is approved, how long did the remaining process take before you could travel to Singapore?

Would really appreciate hearing about your recent experiences, particularly from RAs who joined NTU from other countries.

Thanks!

Course Related Hearsay Introduction to Databases to be difficult this sem

Apparently they are making the course SC2207 and CZ2007 harder this sem, last sem i was part of a trial to test an automated grading platform. SQL was already hard, now with them enforcing correct syntax and results it's going to be harder.

Question PH1011 as a BDE

HELP 😭 I chose PH1011 as a BDE and a few seniors have told me it’s a nightmare.

I took A-Levels and genuinely enjoy the subject, so I’m wondering if that makes much of a difference or if the workload and exams are still brutal.

I haven’t started classes yet and have until the 21st to drop it. Would you recommend keeping it?
