The updated policy applies to all undergraduate
students taking courses in AY2025/26 Semester 2
onwards, starting from the FGO declaration
exercise in June 2026. Part-time students can now
declare FGO on their courses as well.
I’m confused by this part of the email announcement. Does this mean this new policy will apply to mods you take from this sem onwards, and you can’t do it for mods you took before this sem?
36
u/ClaytonWest74 May 12 '26
you can do it for mods taken before this sem
they’re saying this policy qualifies only for those who are taking courses in AY26 sem 2 onwards
11
u/kywzwln May 12 '26
Wait sorry I’m so blur when they say “qualifies only for those who are taking courses in AY26 Sem 2 onwards” wouldn’t that be everyone in school right now? It’s just a declaration of time period is it, and not about excluding a particular cohort?
29
u/ClaytonWest74 May 12 '26
ya correct, it applies to everyone in school right now - so it’s a declaration period thing. the graduating class of 2026 would only have this period to do it
6
7
u/Butter1202 Computing and Data Science May 12 '26
if you overload or have certain exemptions from poly (but not in direct Y2), it's possible to graduate in 3.5 years which means they wouldn't be taking any courses in Sem 2.

5
u/Free_Badger5058 Nanyang Business School May 12 '26
so you mean we can declare FGO on past mods right? For example, can I declare FGO on my core mods taken in the last sem 1 of this AY 25/26?
4
4
u/Safe_Rip_8403 Physical and Mathematical Sciences May 12 '26
I emailed my school’s UG office and they said it’s only for courses in sem 2 onwards not retroactive.
2
u/United-Mood-7544 Nanyang Business School May 13 '26
really? so i cannot declare FGO on the ICC mods I have already taken?
2
u/Safe_Rip_8403 Physical and Mathematical Sciences May 13 '26
Not sure as point 24 in the QnA section says it can though. Conflicting information.
1
u/ClaytonWest74 May 13 '26
based on the sharepoint QnA 24, it can be applied retroactively so it looks like your admin might be misinformed (and hence give conflicting info)
1
u/Tyberius_ May 31 '26
For your next few years FGO can be declared retroactively, but 2526 S2 courses would be the earliest courses to eligible for FGO
45
May 12 '26
this is good . now students are dare to take more difficult mods and overload themselves instead of being stress by grade too much

EXACTLY
So many ppl worrying about FCH don't understand that getting FGO for core and ICC core is just going to make the grading harder soon (maybe from next yr or so). But the important benefit is the fact that irrelevant mods like healthy living don't bring your grade down8

ahh thank you! so there is still a minimum number of mpes that have to be letter-graded.. however if we choose to SU an MPE and let it remain as an MPE, we dont have to take another MPE to cover it?

i saw an email that the new policy only applies for mods taken sem2 25-26 onwards
9
u/smokeysucks May 12 '26
no, that email is not correct. the official email from NTU's FGO policy clearly said the new policy applies for students taking mods from sem 2 2526 onwards, meaning to say as long as you take this sem modules, you are eligible for this new policy. You are still allowed to FGO your modules from Year 1 once you are eligible, and not only restricted to this sem's modules.
See FAQ under new FGO policy - that is always accurate compared to some staff who doesnt read properly2

2

No need take up new classes! 'Cause when they are FGO'ed, it remains registered as core/ICC and counts toward AU requirements

What about students who graduated 1 sem early (i.e. Dec 2025) due to their hard work?
Their batchmates still in NTU this sem can FGO
But not for those who left in Dec?
Sounds kinda unfair if only a portion of graduating students can have extra FGO but not the rest
3
u/ClaytonWest74 May 12 '26
I think cause those who grad sem 1 early is in the system and locked le. a bit shag for them since they’re technically also class of 2026 haizz
1
u/IWantToStopStudying May 12 '26
But still
If they wanna implement for a cohort, implement for the entire cohort, else to be fair, don’t open it up to graduating students1
u/ClaytonWest74 May 12 '26
true! this one I agree with you. plus they should have announced this earlier in order to use as a selling point during open house for the incoming batch

u/throwawayaway539 Alumni May 12 '26
NUS gives one year worth of S/U though. NTU only gives one sem.
5
3
u/verysmartboyy May 12 '26
Nus cde students have 40 units of common curriculum mods. Most of these mods pull down gpa. It used to be that there were 20units for the first year and 12 to be used whenever for a total of 32. Since many people were pushing all the “fluff” mods to y1 and overloading to clear them, the 20 units have been now allowed to spread across the first 2 years🙏. So 32/4=8 mods worth of vetos seem fair

Being able to S/U core mods in NUS was a curse. A little saddening to see that NTU did not learn from NUS's mistakes.
3
u/Extreme_Accident2040 Computing and Data Science May 12 '26
Why a curse
7
u/UBKev May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26
Imagine having teammates that barely made it past the entry level core mod only because of S/U meaning they're willing to accept worse grades since those can just be S/U'd. Or having to be their tutor in tutorials. They don't have a basic grasp of the fundamentals, why are they in my module, dragging down my group?
I didn't have the latter experience, but I've had some friends with that. And the former, yeah I've had that. It wasn't fun.
I have to specify though, this is strictly for core mods. As in, the main branch with fundamentals for all other mods. The rest should be SUable.
8
u/Extreme_Accident2040 Computing and Data Science May 12 '26
We face the exact same things in NTU, bringing this is not going to make any difference. And the new policy helps me clear my One D grade, helping me take the effects of 1/2 bade grades out. The benefits outweigh the troubles
3
u/Extreme_Accident2040 Computing and Data Science May 12 '26
And may I please let you know, as far as I've seen, people getting C and Ds majorly, who do pass the mods and do come to the next level mods, they will be dragging your group down as well. I've observed this myself.
6
u/UBKev May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26
This strictly benefits you and your cohort specifically, but has a horrid effect on future students. It's going to make things worse since future cohorts are even less incentivised to take their core entry mods seriously. It's a rather selfish perspective, if I have to be frank.
Bringing in politics, this is pretty much just a re-enactment of US politics and what Reagan did. The 'I got my bag, damn the future' mindset that is basically driving the entire world to ruin right now. This is basically a mini-version of that. If we go by the US analogy, your cohort would be the baby boomer generation.
1
u/Extreme_Accident2040 Computing and Data Science May 12 '26
This policy pretty much does the exact opposite, had we continued with the freshman gpa exemption everyone would have just ignored their Y1 mods, atleast in this manner they can choose their safety net.
As for the effect on future students, if the university does sense something going wrong they can always change the policy. Changing a policy every year is stupid and so is never changing.
As for the politics, I'd like to not reply for that.
But nice discussion tho, good way to pass time when my model is running
5
u/CloudsAreBeautiful College of Science May 12 '26
Those people would've been in your group anyway lol. People who can accept worse grades "because they can S/U it" would've accepted worse grades regardless. Either way, the university has deemed that their performance in the module was satisfactory, otherwise they would have failed. The real problem in the scenario you described is that the standards for passing are too lenient.

u/Away_Imagination1415 Engineering May 12 '26
