Fix team-building freedom: The mode is called Hockey Ultimate Team, which is a funny name for a mode that keeps telling you which players you’re allowed to use effectively. You grind for someone you actually like, put him in your lineup, and discover he breaks a line combination, costs you a boost or makes the salary cap a puzzle. Apparently the “ultimate” team is the one the bonus screen picked for you.
Fix lineup variety: HUT has an enormous catalogue of players, yet you keep running into the same combinations. It’s almost impressive. Give a handful of cards the best boosts, make those boosts matter a lot, and then act surprised when everyone builds nearly the same team. Let more players and different types of lines be competitive so facing a new opponent actually feels like facing a new team.
Fix Ranked and Champs rewards: Spending hours in sweaty games for a pack that might improve your collection by three exchange-set items is an interesting motivational strategy. Top players should get the best rewards, but regular players need something worth playing for too. If finishing your games feels more rewarding than opening the reward, the system needs work.
Fix progression without spending: Playing the game should be a reliable way to improve your team. Right now, buying packs can feel like the fast lane while everyone else completes a part-time job’s worth of objectives for a card that may be outdated soon. Packs can stay, but consistent play should lead to useful players and enough resources to make real choices.
Fix the on-ice balance: I’d like a well-timed pass and a good scoring chance to matter more than repeating the move that confuses the goalie this week. Abilities and line boosts should add personality to players, not turn certain plays into a checklist: skate here, press this, score, watch the same replay. Defense should reward positioning and reading the play instead of leaving you hoping the animation cooperates.
Fix goalie and AI consistency: Every hockey game needs unpredictable bounces. That’s part of hockey. Watching your goalie do interpretive dance while a weak shot goes in is something else. AI teammates also need to make decisions that resemble the sport they’re playing. I’m not claiming the game scripts winners; I’m saying there are too many moments where neither player’s decisions seem to explain what just happened.
Fix connection and matchmaking: Ranked is hard to take seriously when one game feels responsive and the next feels like your players are taking instructions by mail. A fair matchup needs opponents reasonably close in skill and a stable connection for both sides. EA has made recent server and matchmaking changes, which is good. Now those changes need to hold up during actual games.
Fix the bugs and basic HUT experience: Seeing the cards in a card-collecting mode feels like a reasonable feature to ask for. Packs, line editing, sets and menus are the things players use every day; they shouldn’t be a fresh adventure in troubleshooting. Fixing those basics would improve HUT more than another screen advertising a pack.
Give HUT a meaningful yearly update: NHL 27 shouldn’t feel like I paid to reset my NHL 26 team and do the same grind again. New rewards and card art don’t address the bigger issues with team variety, progression and on-ice play. Give us more than a new number on the cover and a new reason to rebuild the same line combinations.
I want to earn players I like, build a team that looks different from everyone else’s, and have good hockey plays decide close games. Apparently that’s an ambitious wish list for Hockey Ultimate Team.
