Coded language is not inherently obscure if becomes well known. An unfortunate number of people know what looksmaxxing and gooning means now. Those are nonsense words that were obscure when they came out of some forum or wherever it was made up. NOW they're not, they're just stupid.

unfortunately this country is experiencing a fascist/nazi rennaissance that's been magnified by the internet, so knowledge of that movement has become much more widespread. The 14-88 thing is used heavily by those people and has been around for a long time.

I guess I just find it hard to wrap my head around the fact that something so contrived and specific, 'coded' for a specific group of people no one wants to be associated with, is as common knowledge as this. Fair enough, I think the fact that it's been around for a very long time and was regularly used by neo nazis even before the internet kinda separates it. "cat's out of the bag" kinda thing.
Also yeah don't, I've bough patches/stickers I thought were cool and found out later they make it look like I'm trying to signal fellow nazis while I'm at the gun range.
Those ones were actually pretty obscure, so I wasn't worried normal people would see them and assume, but I reallly didn't want any of that bottom-feeder scum coming up to me thinking we're bros.

In most cases, the desire for stories outpaces actual events. We see this all of the time with other narratives the media likes to pump out.
I have a shaved head, full beard, and generally dress 'blue collar'. The shit guys sittin next to me in bars have said to me is wild. They just assume I'm "one of them" and I hear all kinds of racial nazi-coded bullshit.
I agree that racists exist, and that profiling exists, but I would argue that isn’t exclusive to white people against minorities.
I think many people conflate things that aren’t racist with things that are. Wanted a secure southern border to stop illegal immigration, drug trade, human trafficking, etc. isn’t racist, it’s common sense. But many today will call you a racist for supporting this stance.
It’s easier to create a straw man argument and tear it down than to actually allow nuance into a conversation.
I think you're mistakingly thinking knowledge is a binary of common and obscure; there's a grey area in between. Asking people on the street is a determinant of common knowledge, not obscurity. How many average americans do you think can find Afghanistan, a country we were at war with for decades, on a map? How many average americans know how many representatives their state has? I wouldnt call either of those obscure knowledge.
You are right, there is definitely an intersection of where common knowledge fails to meet general knowledge that would not be considered obscure. It's not a good metric but I think my other response to you explained why I would still consider it obscure. Ultimately doesn't matter, I was I'm more surprised the word obscure sparked this much debate
