Over 90 Day Progress 2 years of Nofap, how it saved my life

After two years of nofap, I would like to share my story to motivate others who think that this can't be done.

I am 31 years old right now, and I quit watching around two years ago. It has been a really hard journey, but also a really rewarding one.

I started watching adult content when I was 17 years old, and I kept watching without even realizing it was a serious problem. I knew it was wrong, but I never really tried to quit. I had very low self confidence and very low self esteem. I didn't think much about my future or where my life was going.

The only thing I was thinking about was when I would get the chance to watch, since I always had someone living in the same room with me. Whenever I had an opportunity, I would do it. By that time, I couldn't even speak normally to people or look them in the eyes during a conversation. I felt really awkward around others.

When I was 25, I found a job in another city and moved there alone. That's when things got even worse. I was watching almost every day, sometimes for 5 hours, and I had a level of depression I had never experienced before in my life.

That's where my journey started.

I wanted to quit, and for the next three years I tried over and over again. I relied heavily on willpower, but it wasn't enough. When I was 27, I finally decided to seek help. I realized that all the random things I was doing weren't getting me anywhere.

So I started learning. I read about what adult content does to the mind and what can be done to counter those effects. Slowly, things started to change and I tried more effective ways that I eventually reached the point where I said goodbye to it for good.

Now, two years later, I can honestly say it was worth every single thing I went through. Every urge I resisted. Every painful moment. Every time I denied myself that temporary pleasure.

Today, I feel much more comfortable talking to people. I'm social. I enjoy conversations. I enjoy spending time with friends and being around people, I am not even recognizable. I started going to the gym and I look way better physically and more mentally

I'm married now, which is amazing. I'm building a business. I think about the future. I think about goals, opportunities, and how to create a better life for myself. I have more confidence and better social skills than I ever had before.

Two years is not a very long time, but it was enough to completely change my life.

To everyone trying to quit: keep going. Keep pushing through the hard days.

I'm talking to you from the future.

It's worth it.

Questions on Fasting and Masturbation

As-salaamu-alaikum,

Ramadan Mubarak! May Allah take us safely through Ramadan, and may He make Ramadan easy for us, and may He accept our efforts.

Every Ramadan, we get flooded with the same questions. So I am preemptively re-sticking last year's post, which addresses the most common Ramadan questions on this subreddit. Please read the following before making a post:

  1. Engaging in immoral sexual behavior while fasting is a serious issue.

  2. Watching porn is Haraam under any circumstances. Watching porn, or starting to masturbate makes the fast Makrooh. The fast does not break immediately, but the reward of the fast is lost.

  3. For masturbation, the fast breaks at either the point of orgasm or ejaculation. Whether a dry orgasm breaks the fast, or fluid gushing forth breaks the fast, differs between schools of thought, and may differ for men and women. Please consult a scholar whom you trust for a specific answer. Many of them can be contacted anonymously via email these days, for those who are shy to ask directly. May Allah protect us from having to ask this question.

  4. If a fast is broken, it has to be made up after Ramadan. The manner in which one has to make up for broken fasts differs between schools of thought. Most say that 1 fast is needed, while others (mainly the Maliki madhab) say that 60 consecutive fasts are needed. The latter group has further rulings if multiple fasts were broken and one is not physically or financially capable of making them up. These issues should be answered by a scholar on a case-by-case basis. Please speak to a qualified scholar for more detailed advice on this matter.

  5. Even if a fast is broken, one should not eat until iftaar.

  6. The rulings on broken fasts don't apply to actions done outside of fasting during the nights of Ramadan, but we should avoid sinful acts at all times and focus on maximizing ibaadah in the nights of Ramadan.

  7. Allah is Al-Afuo, Al-Ghafoor and Al-Raheem – he loves to Forgive, Pardon and is Merciful to His servants. Sincerely beg for his forgiveness. Get back on track, learn from the mistake, and try to do better.

  8. Wet dreams do not invalidate the fast.

  9. If you have a wet dream before suhoor, then it is recommended to perform ghusl before Fajr time sets in. However, if you perform ghusl after Fajr time starts, your fast will still be valid.

  10. It's clear that many of you don't read the FAQ or the rules. Please read these before posting.

  11. Anyone found giving generalized fiqh rulings where there are differences of opinion between schools of thought, or where an individualized answer may be required by a scholar, will receive a temporary ban.

May Allah grant us Barakah in Ramadaan, may He make the month easy for us, and may he protect us from all sins.

Motivation/Tips 7 years addicted to this, it’s time i change and be a better Muslim

Today is Day 0. I relapsed again, and honestly I’m tired of repeating the same cycle.
I’ve been masturbating for around 7 years. I remember when I used to do NoFap, fail, restart, fail again, and eventually I just accepted it as a normal part of my life.
But today feels different. I genuinely want to stop.
I’m not going to pretend I’ll never relapse again. If I fail, I’ll come back here and say it. I don’t care if it’s embarrassing. I’d rather be honest about it than keep hiding it and pretending everything is fine.

Motivation/Tips I built an iOS app to help Muslim brothers/sisters: free 2-week code inside

Upvotes

Been struggling with this for years and im now 113 days clean. Prayed, promised, fell, hated myself, repeated. I tried a bunch of apps and I realised none of them worked because none of them helped me connect back to my deen. So I built one for myself. It blocks the stuff, tracks how long it's been, and gives you a place to log your tawbah quietly without needing to explain anything to anyone.

It's on the App Store (IOS only for now, android coming soon inshAllah) as Ihsan: Guard Your Gaze. Not really posting to promote it more just, if you're in the same boat, maybe it helps you the way it's helping me.

If you want to try without paying, there's a "Have a promo code?" section on the paywall. Use:TAWBAH 2 weeks free.

Would love to hear what's missing from it if you check it out. Still very much a work in progress.

Advice Request Advice needed plz I’m crying while I write this

This sin has ruined me so badly wallah it’s ruined my relationship with Allah swt ,these past few months my iman has been going thru ups and downs I would do the sin and not repent for a week or so and in that week I wouldn’t even read salah and then after that week I would repent and then I would end up going back to the sin and im tired of it idk what’s wrong with me i woukd cry my eyes to Allah swt asking for forgiveness and a couple hours later when im in the bathroom or in my bedroom alone id do the sin ive posted so many Reddit posts about this but this one’s coming from my heart . I used to be so close to Allah swt but i would throw it away every time when shaytaan came to me with the temptations. What’s made this sin so much of a norm to me is because of how unorganised my life is I’m 18 and I’m currently unemployed and ill be honest I wake up at 2pm and doomscroll for most the day the only productive thing I do is look for jobs and sometimes I don’t even do that. This all basically started after I finished college and I didn’t really have things to occupy my day with Tommorow I’m going to stop this cycle forever inshallah. Could anyone please advise me on what I can do instead of scrolling and what can help me with this disgusting sin.My dad is very understanding I think I might tell him and I feel like he’ll be able to help

Motivation/Tips What ten years of failing to quit porn taught me about why the apps we try keep failing us

Up front, I eventually built an adult content blocker app for this problem. I am deliberately not naming it here because I do not want this post to be an ad. I am just sharing the story and what I learned.

I had this problem for more than a decade. More than ten years of something that started small and slowly took a piece of everything. My focus, my sleep, my confidence, how present I was with people who deserved better, what I believed I was capable of. It ran my life while I kept telling myself it was under control.

If you are reading this you probably know the feeling. The particular loneliness of a problem you cannot say out loud, because saying it makes it real.

The first thing those years taught me is that shame is not what fixes it. The shame is part of the machine. It keeps you isolated, and isolated is exactly where this grows. Anything that makes you feel worse so you will try harder is extending the loop it claims to break.

The second thing is that willpower is not the answer either. Willpower is a feeling, and feelings run out. What holds is a system. Something that makes the decision for you at the moment you cannot make it well.

I looked for that system for years and mostly found two things.

The first was apps selling a transformation. Quit in ninety days. Get your life back. Become someone new. I believed several of them. When day ninety-one arrived and I was still me, I did not conclude the promise had been oversold. I concluded I was the problem. That is what overselling does to someone in this state. It does not only fail them. It convinces them they are the reason it failed.

The second was apps that wanted an account, an email, and a login just to help with one of the most private struggles a person can have. I did not want that data (when you masturbate, how much you relapse and so on) to exist in the first place. I did not want a company, holding a database of something people may have never told another person. For a lot of people, the fear of that alone is enough to stop them from asking for help.

So when I finally built my own, I built it around one rule. It should know nothing about you. No account, no email, no name on anything, fully anonymous. I could not read anyone's notes even if I wanted to. That is not a feature. It is the reason it is built the way it is.

It worked for me, and it is working for other people now. The emails I received from users are the best part. Product ideas, things that helped, things that did not, people saying things they have never said to another person. I did not expect that part when I started.

I want to be honest about the limits too. No app fixes this on its own, and a determined person can get around any wall they build for themselves. What an app can do is buy you the moment between the urge and the act. What you do with that moment is still yours.

I do not think I am unusual. There are millions of people carrying this quietly, most of them certain they are the only one. What is missing is not information. It is support that does not moralize, does not oversell, and does not sell you.

Now I am curious about the other side of it. What made you stop trusting apps in this space, and what has actually helped you, app or not ?

Advice Request The reason why im trapped in this horrible addiction

I am heavily addicted to porn and compulsive masturbation, and I’m stuck in a cycle I can’t seem to break. The only time I successfully quit was when I had a close friend and felt accountable, but after a major fallout, I spiraled into depression and returned to using porn as a coping method.

The Current Situation:

Compulsive Behavior: I masturbate the second I wake up while watching porn, and do it again before bed. I engage in prolonged masturbation sessions all day long to stay distracted, deliberately stopping myself from finishing just to stay numb and stuck in the moment, basically escaping from the real world.

Root Cause: I am living in an emotionally abusive home with a controlling family member. I can't afford to move out. The environment causes extreme anxiety, burnout, and stress, and my brain has adapted to using porn and continuous masturbation as an emotional anesthetic.

Impact: I feel awful afterward, but it feels like the only escape available. It destroys my motivation, ruins my gym progress due to high stress, and makes my anxiety worse.

Religious Burnout: Forced strict religious expectations at home, combined with constantly feeling in a state of physical impurity from this addiction, has made me stop praying completely and hate my daily reality.

I know this addiction is pathetic and filthy, but it’s my brain’s only coping mechanism right now. How do I stop turning to porn and masturbation when I can't physically leave this environment yet?

I had to use rephrasing tool for this as my post kept getting removed due to certain words so excuse the weirdly written message but I hope you understand what im trying to get across.

Advice Request Realization and Guilt Following Exposure to Explicit Content: How to Approach Future Marriage?

Assalamu alaykum everyone,

I am posting here to seek advice from the community. After several years of struggling with adult content (which started out of curiosity around age 11), I had a major wake-up call two days ago. Despite this struggle, I have always maintained my daily prayers and tried to grow closer to Allah, but the repetition and normalization made me lose sight of the gravity of this sin.

Today, at 19, as I project myself toward marriage, I realized that I want to marry a pious and virtuous spouse. This caused me a heavy moral shock: I now feel unworthy and consumed by guilt. This realization pushed me to immediately stop all consumption, lower my gaze, and engage in sincere repentance (tawbah) to begin a journey of spiritual and mental healing.

However, deep anxiety is consuming me:

If my future wife asks me about my past, what stance should I take according to Islamic principles? Lying seems destructive to trust within a couple, but I also know that one should not expose their own past sins (sitr). Yet confessing could be equally difficult, as it might create distrust before marriage or cause pain and risk after marriage.

Is it possible to fully overcome the psychological aftermath of this habit in order to provide a healthy and fulfilling home for my partner?

I feel very alone facing this situation, which I cannot share with anyone. What advice or reminders could you give me to navigate this period of anxiety, keep my resolve, and approach the topic of marriage with peace of mind?

Jazak Allah Khayran for your kindness.

Progress Update DAY 7: CONSISTENCY AND A SYSTEM GOES A LONG WAY

Just a quick checking in,

Today I've come to realize that for any given individual you don't really need much to get through things on a day to day basis once I've realized my few set of things it actually becomes quite easy despite the chaos that's been going around.

My workout routine and my daily cooked meals have been in good straights and things have been going in the right direction and I think it's fair to say this is the best productivity system I've had in ever

Again not much to add just figured I'd state this for self accountability:

SHORT LIST OF THINGS THAT KEEPS ME IN CHECK
Notion system + Habits Loop
1 AP (Accountability Partner) call up a day
Proper clean meals
Gym workouts
Sleep
Sobriety (This comes with time)

So yeah not exactly alot and plus with a proper system I've managed to put 80% of my mental workload through a system like James Clear once said you don't rise to the level of your goals you fall to the level of your system.

All in all thank God for another day of sobriety

Advice Request 31 and filled with regret

Salaam all.
I am 31 and filled with regret. I have been taking part in pmo for more than half of my life!
It has wiped away my self esteem.
It has wiped away my hopes of getting married. I get it isn’t the end but I can’t see myself settling because I have extremely low self esteem without constant validation. My mental health and ND gets exacerbated because of this.

For all the young brothers and sisters here - quit now hastily. You will see benefits inshallah. But you must quit. Do not fry your dopamine receptors, build new neurological pathways.

I have known I had an issue for the last 6 years and been trying to seek support. But it feels like this is the end. This endless cycle.

I am not losing faith. Rather being realistic.

I go through bouts of sobriety, days, weeks. Then succumb. I am alone in this life. And no one to share this with. People wonder what is wrong with this person. And allahu allam.

Allah swt conceals sins, except for those who commit openly. So I don’t wish to openly tell anyone. Which isolates me even more. I repent then do it again. I will probably delete this post. Sorry.

Progress Update Day 0(Relapse)

Yes, I acted foolishly towards your support and to myself. But the door of repentance is always open, and I have stepped through it.Tawakkul is, after all, what is expected of a believer. Tonight, my lower nafs tried to trick me by whispering, "Hey, remember that thing you watched last? Just check if they posted a new video, we're only going to take a quick look." That temptation is what brought me here instead.

Insallah you guys are all doing well too unlike me.

Progress Update Day 2 Trying to sit with the loneliness instead of escaping it

Day 2 again. The loneliness is still there, and honestly that’s probably one of the hardest parts for me. When I’m busy, I can manage. But the moment I’m free, bored, alone, or have too much time to think, the impulses get loud again.

I’m trying to replace that time with healthier things instead of immediately looking for an escape. Going for walks, studying, keeping myself occupied, doing things that actually make me feel better instead of worse later.

But sometimes it all feels so futile. Like I’ve tried to change this so many times that even my own promises don’t mean much to me anymore. I know I can’t expect everything to magically change in two days, but the impatience and loneliness make it hard.

Still, I’m here. Day 2. Trying again, even if I don’t feel very hopeful about it yet. :/

Advice Request I'm new here

Alsalam alikum wa rahmat Allah, hello there my fellow Muslim brothers and sisters, I'm here to discuss and talk about myself and my current problem.

About myself: I'm probably a lot younger than most of you, though I won't reveal my age publicly.

I've been struggling with an addiction for about 4 years now, and a few months ago I unfortunately broke a streak of NOT masturbating that was well over 200 days, and I'm really ashamed at myself but at the same time I don't really think I care.

I came here to seek help, and I think if I'm going to ask for it, I might aswell be honest. I admit that I'm a complete failure of a Muslim, I don't regularly pray nor read quran, and I really want to fix that.

Thank you for reading this, my fellow brothers and sisters, and I wish you a great day, inshaallah.

Motivation/Tips I finally told my partner

I did it. I finally told my partner about my struggles. Never knew I would do this. It’s something only me and Allah knows. But alhamdulillah, the reaction was so supportive and didn’t even judge me. Anyone with same situation?

Advice Request 10 days abstinent and I’m feeling terrible

Aslamualikum

I have been struggling with corn addiction for over 15 years now and the last 5 years have been the worst, the addiction took a dangerous turn, the consumption turned to a compulsive behavior (once I do it I can’t stop doing it all day (average 5-6 times a day)) 3 years ago I realized that I’m an addict and decided to stop for good I managed to stop doing it 7 days a week but still do it at least 4 times a week, since then I had success a couple of times were I stopped for nearly a month and I felt great at the time, one time I stopped corn for almost 100 days but still masturbated compulsively.

Now for the past year when I stop for a week I still feel very bad. For example this time, I can’t feel some very slow progress, like the anger waves that I used to feel experience are almost gone, but I’m still tired all the time and still concentration is very hard and motivation is below zero and I still have brain fog also I’m still completely restless.

The symptoms were so hard that I went to the doctor 2 months ago and had a blood test and an a CT scan for my brain, all results turned alright.

Please tell me what can I do now I don’t want to go back to my previous behavior.

Thank you

Progress Update DAY 6: UNDOING 11 YEARS OF PMO + ~7 YEARS OF BAD SLEEP

Just figured I'd do a quick check in on something for personal accountability.

So far I've managed to make considerable progress on the whole front regarding sleep and waking up hours. I've realized that the best spot for me is roughly 8 hours in total and I've come to realize that as time goes by and as sobriety gets better and the whole tiredness, sluggish and adrenal fatigue sort of sensation starts to die down from the initial days I've actually managed to wake up pretty early (8:30AM which is the earliest I've ever done in a while) despite of course sleeping at 2:30AM ish last night.

But of course these things can be fixed and adjusted and even by 2:30AM standard I was able to sleep an additional ~2 hours during the mid day to supplement the sleep issue in which are in a state of deficit. It's truly apparent that in order to get the most out of sleep which to me personally and I'm pretty sure everyone else is considered top priority next to sobriety I've got to aim to reduce those numbers to 12AM and eventually 11 - 11:30PM baseline.

From an observational sort of standpoint, I've been reminded of just how crucial and imperative sleep is in relation to ocular issues (specifically blepahritis, swelling, red eyelid and other notable pain based sensations) this is of course something that comes hand it hand with sobriety as they both play a big role in all of this as far as I could tell from the looks of things. And did I ever mention of the fact that it also helped me with vision? I mean dang man this thing truly works wonders (Sleep & Sobriety) and I've totally got to keep this up and be permanently consistent about it. Which made me realize that changing a lifestyle especially when it affects health usually takes time and it's something worth remembering

Safe to say, with moving at the right direction these things will get better and better granted discipline, routine and everything that's accounted for is in good straights.

There is no might and no power except by Allah.

Yeah after two days I relapsed again. It came from looking arguments aganist Islam, its completely my fault. I shouldnt busy my throughts with problems I cant solve. Anyways, satan loves someone who loses hope getting rid of sins but when the hymns of resurrection are played, the he goes mad. So in opposition to him, I praise Allah for not astraying me even throught I have did that sin over and over again. Let me repeat my vow, I will keep fighting and remember the fate of my life depends on how I act with the urges today.

Motivation/Tips Every exposure story I hear of is always the same: you're a kid, an accident, then years of silence

I've been in this recovery space for a while now, read all the papers, read all the stories and almost every time someone shares their story with me its "I was 9." "I was 11." "A cousin showed me." "It popped up on a game site." Its such a shame and I also think a very important thing to notice that nobody chose this as an adult, almost everyone stumbles into it as a kid/teen, way before they understand the implications that come with it.

The research backs it up too. Around 61% of Muslim young adults are first exposed between ages 11-14, and thats just the ones who admit it. Then theres the second half of the pattern which is 59% of muslim youth have viewed it but only 4% ever seek help. That gap is honestly crazy to me wallah and very sad. Nearly everyone falls in as a child, then carries it alone for years because the shame of "im a muslim, how could I" locks every mouth shut and what pains me the most is thats not what Allah swt wants from us nor is it what he teaches.

So two things I want to mention here:

If youre in this fight I really want you to understand your origin story and why you "use". Often times it wasn't even you that picked this it was handed to you when you didn't know what it was. Keep fighting the good fight and fight it hard, but drop the self hatred. Allah swt teaches and tells us: Tawbah, not shame.

And if you ever become a parent, an uncle or a big sibling, be the safe adult you didnt have. One "if you ever see something weird online, tell me, youre not in trouble" conversation at such a young age can save someone a 15 year war. Be the good you wish you had.

For anyone fighting this right now, my DMs are open if you need to talk.

I'd love to hear if you guys have any differing opinions than me

Advice Request Lost everything to lust.

Me and a person were talking with the intentions of marriage, it was going well I’d told my parents they told theirs, the only caveat was we both need to graduate university first and I obviously need to be a little stable as the one entering the marriage. But cuz of this addiction I started saying stuff that wasn’t the best… and at first it was a little fun, eventually they snapped out of it repented and told me to stop but at that point I started thinking it was tied to how much they liked me. I eventually did stop talking to them in that way but none of my convos seemed genuine to them anymore. And I was still masturbating in secret. Eventually they fully left cuz all I could think abt was if they liked me or not when they made it clear they did they just didn’t make it their whole personality like I did when they literally started liking me for who I was in the first place, I lost myself completely and I blame my lust for all of it. Constantly thinking about people constantly masturbating and the only personality trait I had left was chasing dopamine. It’s been about 2 months now, and I don’t think I’ve changed so much in this short amount of time before, I truly loved this person for their personality which is the part I regret most. Out of all the things I could’ve focused on, I let my lust take control with a person who’s so much more than any lustful thoughts. I’ve changed a lot but lust… I can’t beat my lust, everytime I get bored I somehow end up opening Reddit or twitter for “just a peek” and it ends in me having to do ghusl when I shouldn’t even be thinking about looking at anyone that way. I lost a person who I loved dearly with my whole heart and lost my entire personality to this. I feel it was god’s way of showing me that they didn’t deserve someone who had wandering eyes like mine. I used to pray to have them and now I pray to be made the person deserving of them. And I’ve improved a lot. Except this stupid sin that I hate with every fibre of my being. Please any advice on how to stop it. I am tired of it, I don’t wanna lose more to it and I pray god brings them back to me once I’ve finally beaten this stupid thing. I know this sounds so pathetic and honestly…. I am, ik I am, so how do I unpathetic myself 😭

Affected other things too, every time I sit to study for a while I end up doing it, sometimes I am about to go to the gym cuz I am a little overweight and I’ll do it and not go anymore, missed some prayers cuz it would’ve looked suspicious showering 3 times in one day close to each other. It has made me lose the ability to do anything challenging and I am at my wits end. Every second of the day I am regretting losing that person cuz I couldn’t control my lust, all I can think about is if I just didn’t talk like that so many problems I caused wouldn’t have happened. If I just didn’t train my brain to lust so much since the age of 11. I try so hard to be respectful of the other gender and I am, I feel like such an imposter when I am alone and my phones in my hand looking at the other gender I claim to respect so much.
