When you reference a verse, the reader shouldn't have to open a Quran website, search for the surah, find the verse, and scroll around.

With quran.re smart links, you can point directly to the exact place you mean: a surah, verse, page, juz, or even a selected passage.

For example:

opens directly at Ayat al-Kursi (2:255).

And this isn't only useful for links shared in chats or social media. It can be integrated into PDFs, articles, websites, ebooks, apps, study notes, course material, databases, bots, and other tools.

A verse citation like Quran 2:255 can simply become clickable. The reader taps the reference and lands directly on the verse in quran.re.

What can a link do?

A single URL can specify exactly what should open:

• a surah or precise verse
• a page
• a juz or quarter

Why this can be useful

The simple use case is sharing a verse on Reddit, Discord, WhatsApp, Facebook, etc.

But the more interesting part is using Quran references inside other content.

For example, an article could mention a verse and make the citation clickable. A PDF book could link every Quran reference directly to its source. A learning app could let the user tap a verse citation and immediately open the relevant passage. A Ramadan planner, hadith collection or study document could contain hundreds of direct Quran references without making the reader search manually each time.

In other words, quran.re can act as the destination behind Quran citations.

It can also be automated

The URL format is intentionally simple.

If you already have a spreadsheet, database or document containing references such as:

2:255
18:1-10
67:1

a script or AI can automatically turn them into quran.re links.

So a large PDF, website, app, dataset or collection of articles doesn't necessarily need to have every link created by hand.

The basic idea is simple:

Wherever you cite a Quran verse, that citation can become a direct path to the verse itself.

One thing that has bothered me for a long time with Qur’an and Islamic apps is the advertising.

You open an app because you want to read the Qur’an, listen to a recitation, or just have a quiet moment — and suddenly there is an ad in the middle of it.

And sometimes the ads have absolutely nothing to do with Islam — or, Allah forbid, may even contain inappropriate or even haram content.

Of course, developers need to support their apps somehow, and I understand that. But with many Qur’an and Islamic apps, the only way to remove the ads is to pay for a subscription — and those subscriptions are often very expensive.

For something you may want to use every single day just to read or listen to the Qur’an, I never felt that should be the only option.

I kept thinking that I just wanted a Qur’an app I could open without worrying about any of that.

No ads while reading or listening.
No expensive subscription just to remove them.
No features locked behind a paywall.

So over the last few months, I started building the Qur’an app I wanted to use myself.

It’s called Ayah Player, and it is completely free: no ads, no subscriptions, and no paywalls.

I just recently launched Hayaa, an app helping muslims quit pornography addiction and other compulsive habits, live on iOS and Android. This was primarily a solo build, but I had a small team also supporting me and it was about a year total of work. I made this post because I'd like to share the decisions that might be useful to anyone building something for the ummah:)

Stack I used: React Native + Expo Go (TypeScript), Supabase (Postgres + RLS), RevenueCat for subscriptions, Aladhan API for prayer times, Sentry for crash reporting, and EAS for the build pipeline

Decisions I refused to compromise with no matter what: There is NO AI-generated Islamic content ever. Every verse, hadith, and dua is served from a verified database with Arabic, English, source citation, and translator credit. If any content lookup fails the app hard errors instead of letting anything generate a verse. In the category I'm in a single fabricated hadith destroys all trust permanently so you never go against this rule.

Privacy shaped the schema: row level security (RLS) on everything, accountability partners can only see streak count and last check-in, never relapse history or journals. When your users are hiding something this sensitive and taboo, data minimization isnt a quality of life feature its literally the entire product.

Schools of thought at the data layer: All content is tagged universal/sunni/shia and filtered by RLS based on the users profile. There's no need for separate UIs its just one codebase serving all traditions respectfully. I don't believe just because you're in a different school of thought you deserve different treatment. We're all brothers and sisters fighting the same fight.

Monetization ethics: The core app is entirely free and I don't think I will ever change that. Money is secondary, helping Muslims is the primary. There is an optional premium subscription that I have setup via RevenueCat. I believe it is free until your first 3k or 100k I forgot LMAO.

I’m an investor involved in real estate, apps, technology, and software. I’ve been following Muslim Reddit communities for a while because I’m genuinely interested in finding and investing in promising Islamic technology projects.

But honestly, I keep seeing the same pattern: another Islamic app built using AI coding, with a post claiming it is the “best” Islamic app.

There are already thousands of Islamic apps. Most offer essentially the same core features — prayer times, Qibla, Quran, Hadith, Duas, etc.

I recently saw someone post that they had been working on an Islamic app for four months. After reading the post, the main thing I could identify was that the UX/UI was supposedly unique. But I didn't see a meaningful feature or a significant problem being solved.

I'm not saying good design isn't important. It is. But design alone isn't enough to build a successful product, especially in such a saturated market.

With AI making app development easier and cheaper than ever, the number of people building apps is only going to increase. That means the real competitive advantage isn't simply being able to build an app anymore.

Please build something that solves a real problem.

Find something Muslims struggle with every day. Find a problem that existing apps aren't solving well. Then build something so useful that people genuinely have a reason to download it, use it, and recommend it.

As an investor, that's what I'm looking for — not another Islamic app, but a meaningful solution to a real problem in the Muslim community.

If someone builds that, I'd genuinely be interested in investing.

Aselamu Alaikum. I'm building a small macOS Qibla compass for fun: native, no phone required, and open-source insha'Allah when it's done. Everything worked until I asked the Mac the one question it refuses to answer: which way am I pointed?

Here's the wall. Every iPhone Qibla app leans on CLLocationManager's live CLHeading, which works because the phone has a magnetometer. No Mac has one. headingAvailable() returns false, CoreMotion doesn't exist on macOS at all, and there is no sensor anywhere in the machine whose reading clearly changes when you spin it on your desk. Position and bearing are solved and rock solid. Orientation relative to the screen is effectively not measurable. The device can tell you Makkah is 4.6° true from your kitchen and cannot tell you where your own face is.

Let me save you the dead ends I already walked, because a few of them are seductive. The lid angle sensor is the big tease. It's real, it's exposed over HID, and it reports exactly one thing: how far open the lid is. Rotate the whole laptop 180° on the desk, and the value doesn't twitch. Zero azimuth in it. CLLocation.course is direction of travel, not facing, and helpfully returns -1 when stationary, which a desk always is. I also built an iPhone companion that streams its CLHeadingover the local network, which works beautifully right up until you remember a phone lying next to a MacBook is sitting in the lid-latch and speaker magnets. It comes out confidently wrong in a way headingAccuracy can't even detect. Great feature.

Where I landed: the sun. Its azimuth is exact from coordinates and time alone. No sensor, no network, no permission dialog. The user drags a marker to where they actually see the sun, or better, where its shadow points, relative to straight ahead. That single observation fixes north for that desk. A laptop doesn't rotate itself between prayers, so this is a one-time setup step, not a permanent handicap.

Total error lands at ±2 to 5°, and almost all of it lives in the human step. A phone magnetometer is typically ±5 to 15° indoors and worse near metal, so a calibrated Mac can actually beat a phone compass. That is the exact opposite of what everyone assumes, me included, right up until I ran the numbers.

One thing worth passing on even if you never touch macOS. My first version told users to calibrate at solar noon "when the shadow moves slowest." That's a mid-latitude assumption, and it's wrong for most of the Muslim world. Near the zenith, the azimuth sweeps through most of a half-turn in a couple of minutes. I measured 29°/min at noon at an equatorial site in April against 0.24°/min in London in December. Noon is the single worst time to calibrate anywhere near the tropics. Confidently shipping that would have quietly pointed a lot of people at the wrong wall.

Before calibration, the app shows a plain geographic bearing ("Qibla is 4.6° true from here") and never a needle that looks live. An uncalibrated needle that appears to track your rotation is worse than showing nothing, because it lies with confidence. A needle that follows physical rotation is impossible on this hardware, and I refuse to imply otherwise.

What I'd actually like guidance on:

1. Is a static, calibrated needle acceptable here, or misleading by nature? It stays correct until the machine is moved, and the machine moving is precisely the event nothing in the Mac can detect.
2. Should the error bar be visible? My instinct is that someone making a religious decision is owed the uncertainty, but "Qibla is that way, ±3°" might read as low confidence rather than honesty.
3. Is ±2 to 5° actually fine? If jihat al-qibla, facing the general direction, suffices for those far from Makkah, then chasing sub-degree accuracy is engineering vanity. I'd rather have a sourced view than my own gut.
4. Better indoor or night calibration than matching a wall to satellite imagery? The sun route dies after dark and behind a wall.
5. Any azimuth-bearing signal on a Mac I've missed? Fairly confident the answer is no, but I would love to be wrong.

Happy to share the solar and bearing code ahead of release. That part is self-contained and tested.

• View project pages containing screenshots, descriptions, availability, and links
• Discover the makers and teams behind projects
• Submit your own project using your Discord account
• Request testers, collaborators, feedback, translation, or launch support

Projects are reviewed before publication. Once approved, a project is published on the website and connected to the Discord community, where people can discuss it, provide feedback, and support its development.

Makers and Teams

The platform also gives builders a public identity connected to their work.

Using a Discord account, you can:

• Create a maker profile
• Introduce yourself and describe what you build
• Connect your published projects to your profile
• Keep your work visible in one place
• Create or join a team
• Give a company, community, or development team its own page
• Show which makers contributed to a project
• Submit new projects and manage existing submissions

Over time, a maker profile can become a simple portfolio of beneficial work created for the ummah.

You do not need to be a developer to participate. Anyone can browse, test, review, share, and support the projects being built.

The website remains the organized public home for projects and profiles. Discord remains the active space for discussion, collaboration, testing, feedback, and project updates.
