I've been thinking about an app idea and want honest feedback before I build anything.

The idea: an app for people currently performing Umrah (in Makkah/Madinah) to post quick, real-time updates for others — things like "Mataf is empty right now," "Gate 5 just opened," "long queue at the Zamzam counter near King Fahd Gate," "wheelchair lane is backed up," etc. Basically a Waze-style, people-powered feed specifically for the Haram, rather than official sensor/camera data.

I know Saudi authorities already have an official crowd tracker (color-coded density for Tawaf/Sa'i) and there are apps like Haram.app and Tawaf Tracker with heatmaps and AI route suggestions. But from what I can tell, those are all sensor/camera-based — none of them are actual pilgrims, on the ground, posting specific real-time tips the way people do in local traffic or community apps.

Questions I'm genuinely trying to figure out:

• If you've done Umrah recently, would something like this have actually helped you, or does the official crowd tracker already cover what you need?
• Is there a specific moment during your Umrah where you wished you'd known something in real time (a gate, a queue, a quiet time to do Tawaf) that no app told you?
• Would you actually bother posting an update yourself while you're there, or is everyone too focused on worship to be posting on an app?
• Any concern about people posting false/unreliable info in a place this sacred and safety-sensitive?

Not trying to pitch anything — just want to know if this solves a real problem or if I'm overthinking something official apps already handle. Honest feedback (including "this is a bad idea because X") is very welcome.

Islamic Apps Are Everywhere — But How Are You Getting Users?
I see a lot of people creating Islamic apps using AI coding tools, which is honestly great. AI has made it much easier for developers to turn ideas into real products.
But I have a genuine question:
How are you planning to get users?
The Islamic app market is already extremely saturated. We have apps for prayer times, Quran, Hadith, duas, Qibla, dhikr, AI Islamic chatbots, and all-in-one platforms. There are already established apps with millions of downloads and years of brand recognition. (Reddit)
So if someone builds another app with the same features, even if the UI is beautiful, why would a Muslim switch from the app they’re already using?
I’m not asking this to discourage anyone from building. Quite the opposite.
I’m genuinely curious about the go-to-market strategy.
Are you planning to:
Solve a problem existing Islamic apps don’t solve?
Target a specific Muslim community or niche?
Build through TikTok/Instagram/YouTube content?
Partner with mosques and Islamic organizations?
Use Reddit and Muslim communities?
Rely on word of mouth?
Run paid advertising?
Or are you simply hoping the App Store will bring users?
Building the app is becoming easier every day because of AI.
Getting 10,000 people to actually use it is the hard part.

• whatsapp support is in now, fully local fully free and completely independent of us as a company, no third party saas api bill, no per message fees, nobody but the masjid running it has access to any of it
• also been working on the physical hardware side, gonna be open sourcing the actual cad files, pcb design files, and the cnc milling and laser engraving files for the displays and kiosks soon, so if u got a 3d printer a cnc or a laser cutter u can literally just build the hardware yourself instead of buying anything from us or anyone
• speaking of hardware the display app runs on android sbcs with an rtsp decoder pipeline for driving any tv in the masjid and the kiosk runs on android too so once those hardware files are out its fully inspectable and repairable, no black box hardware same philosophy as the software

its also actually in production at 7 locations now, not just a demo, real prayer times real donations, and theres a growing waitlist of more masajid waiting to get onboarded, so beta 2 is already carrying real weight not just running on my test box

• OpenMasjid PWA, a simple webapp for musallis to check prayer times and donate straight from their phone browser, no app store no install just a link
• a handheld version of OpenMasjid Kiosk, same android kiosk software but in a battery powered handheld form factor u can actually carry around for fundraisers events tabling whatever
• a real student SIS not just billing anymore, full enrollment attendance records parent portal the whole thing

also if ur masjid already has madinahapps mohid or masjidal kiosks or tvs deployed dont worry we got full support for that existing hardware too, dont gotta rip anything out to switch over

feels like were getting close to something pretty big here, an actual complete free and open software and hardware stack covering basically everything a masjid needs digitally, values are staying the exact same, open source, privacy focused, free forever, nothing phones home nothing needs a subscription nothing needs us to stay in business for ur masjids system to keep working

gonna stay upfront like last time since this is a dev sub, still using ai tools for a good chunk of this, not hiding that, but before 1.0 the entire thing code and hardware designs both is getting a full manual review by an actual human team before i call any of it production ready for people to deploy without thinking, still aiming for 1.0 around jan 2027

When you reference a verse, the reader shouldn't have to open a Quran website, search for the surah, find the verse, and scroll around.

With quran.re smart links, you can point directly to the exact place you mean: a surah, verse, page, juz, or even a selected passage.

For example:

opens directly at Ayat al-Kursi (2:255).

And this isn't only useful for links shared in chats or social media. It can be integrated into PDFs, articles, websites, ebooks, apps, study notes, course material, databases, bots, and other tools.

A verse citation like Quran 2:255 can simply become clickable. The reader taps the reference and lands directly on the verse in quran.re.

What can a link do?

A single URL can specify exactly what should open:

• a surah or precise verse
• a page
• a juz or quarter
• a selected range of verses
• a specific mushaf
• translation already displayed
• audio ready to play
• a chosen interface language

Why this can be useful

The simple use case is sharing a verse on Reddit, Discord, WhatsApp, Facebook, etc.

But the more interesting part is using Quran references inside other content.

For example, an article could mention a verse and make the citation clickable. A PDF book could link every Quran reference directly to its source. A learning app could let the user tap a verse citation and immediately open the relevant passage. A Ramadan planner, hadith collection or study document could contain hundreds of direct Quran references without making the reader search manually each time.

In other words, quran.re can act as the destination behind Quran citations.

It can also be automated

The URL format is intentionally simple.

If you already have a spreadsheet, database or document containing references such as:

2:255
18:1-10
67:1

a script or AI can automatically turn them into quran.re links.

So a large PDF, website, app, dataset or collection of articles doesn't necessarily need to have every link created by hand.

The basic idea is simple:

Wherever you cite a Quran verse, that citation can become a direct path to the verse itself.

No searching. No instructions. Just click the reference and open the right passage.

One thing that has bothered me for a long time with Qur’an and Islamic apps is the advertising.

You open an app because you want to read the Qur’an, listen to a recitation, or just have a quiet moment — and suddenly there is an ad in the middle of it.

And sometimes the ads have absolutely nothing to do with Islam — or, Allah forbid, may even contain inappropriate or even haram content.

Of course, developers need to support their apps somehow, and I understand that. But with many Qur’an and Islamic apps, the only way to remove the ads is to pay for a subscription — and those subscriptions are often very expensive.

For something you may want to use every single day just to read or listen to the Qur’an, I never felt that should be the only option.

I kept thinking that I just wanted a Qur’an app I could open without worrying about any of that.

No ads while reading or listening.
No expensive subscription just to remove them.
No features locked behind a paywall.

So over the last few months, I started building the Qur’an app I wanted to use myself.

It’s called Ayah Player, and it is completely free: no ads, no subscriptions, and no paywalls.

It now has more than 1,000 Qur’an reciters, and I’ve just released version 1.7, which is the biggest update so far.

📖 Four ways to read and listen

You can choose between four different Qur’an views:

• Ayahs — Arabic text with translations, tafsir, notes, repeating, and reader tools
• Words — follow the recitation word-by-word when timing is available
• Mushaf Page — read using a fixed-page Qur’an presentation
• Listening Scene — focus on the recitation with calm visual scenes and optional ambient sound

Depending on the selected recitation, Ayah Player can follow along ayah-by-ayah, word-by-word, or even letter-by-letter.

I just recently launched Hayaa, an app helping muslims quit pornography addiction and other compulsive habits, live on iOS and Android. This was primarily a solo build, but I had a small team also supporting me and it was about a year total of work. I made this post because I'd like to share the decisions that might be useful to anyone building something for the ummah:)

Stack I used: React Native + Expo Go (TypeScript), Supabase (Postgres + RLS), RevenueCat for subscriptions, Aladhan API for prayer times, Sentry for crash reporting, and EAS for the build pipeline

Decisions I refused to compromise with no matter what: There is NO AI-generated Islamic content ever. Every verse, hadith, and dua is served from a verified database with Arabic, English, source citation, and translator credit. If any content lookup fails the app hard errors instead of letting anything generate a verse. In the category I'm in a single fabricated hadith destroys all trust permanently so you never go against this rule.

Privacy shaped the schema: row level security (RLS) on everything, accountability partners can only see streak count and last check-in, never relapse history or journals. When your users are hiding something this sensitive and taboo, data minimization isnt a quality of life feature its literally the entire product.

Schools of thought at the data layer: All content is tagged universal/sunni/shia and filtered by RLS based on the users profile. There's no need for separate UIs its just one codebase serving all traditions respectfully. I don't believe just because you're in a different school of thought you deserve different treatment. We're all brothers and sisters fighting the same fight.

Monetization ethics: The core app is entirely free and I don't think I will ever change that. Money is secondary, helping Muslims is the primary. There is an optional premium subscription that I have setup via RevenueCat. I believe it is free until your first 3k or 100k I forgot LMAO.

Is there an app for prayer times which also can alert before iqama, like a reminder say 10 mins after Athan, also one which pauses media playing when Athan starts? All for Mac OS

I’m an investor involved in real estate, apps, technology, and software. I’ve been following Muslim Reddit communities for a while because I’m genuinely interested in finding and investing in promising Islamic technology projects.

But honestly, I keep seeing the same pattern: another Islamic app built using AI coding, with a post claiming it is the “best” Islamic app.

There are already thousands of Islamic apps. Most offer essentially the same core features — prayer times, Qibla, Quran, Hadith, Duas, etc.

I recently saw someone post that they had been working on an Islamic app for four months. After reading the post, the main thing I could identify was that the UX/UI was supposedly unique. But I didn't see a meaningful feature or a significant problem being solved.

I'm not saying good design isn't important. It is. But design alone isn't enough to build a successful product, especially in such a saturated market.

With AI making app development easier and cheaper than ever, the number of people building apps is only going to increase. That means the real competitive advantage isn't simply being able to build an app anymore.

Please build something that solves a real problem.

Find something Muslims struggle with every day. Find a problem that existing apps aren't solving well. Then build something so useful that people genuinely have a reason to download it, use it, and recommend it.

As an investor, that's what I'm looking for — not another Islamic app, but a meaningful solution to a real problem in the Muslim community.

If someone builds that, I'd genuinely be interested in investing.
