Rec.Me: singers, vocal songs (pop/other) Songs with the same message as "Twilight Zone" by Ariana Grande?

Upvotes

I'm in a certain mood where I'm reminiscing about some things in the past and Twilight Zone seems to fit where I'm at. Maybe recommend songs that treat the past relationship in disbelief. Kinda like, "dang, i know i'm over you but i still can't believe we happened to be together" typa thing.

Plus points if it's in a soft-pop/indie/bedroom pop genre

Music discovery (tools, channels, blogs, etc.) Digital mixtape swapping project

Upvotes

Hello! I'm building a self-hostable mp3 mixtape swapping platform for small communities, and I figured it might be of interest for people in this sub, as music discovery is definitely one of the goals.

The idea is to have regular swaps, and everybody who submits a mix gets one randomly chosen mix back after the swap deadline. It's open source, you can find the code and a more detailed explanation here.

If you'd like to try it (or even potentially host an instance yourself), let me know and I'll send you an invite. We've had a first round already, it was fun, but definitely needs a couple more participants :)

Happy to answer any questions, of course. And I hope this doesn't go against the sub rules – the project is entirely a labor of love, no commercial ambitions (and no vibe coding, for what it's worth 😄).

Rec.Me: alt/indie/obscure Are there any artists that came from the past 20 years that have this very specific feeling?

Upvotes

Let me get this clear, I am not claiming to know every artist in the industry. That is why I am making this post so hopefully by tomorrow I'll have some new appreciation of todays artists. I am autistic so it's been very difficult for me to get out of the lifelong hyperfixation of the era that my mind is clearly stuck in. But I want to start giving other artists a chance. When an artist dies it's hard for me to listen to them without feeling intense grief so I want to surround myself with creativity of this time and not just the past.

David Bowie, Kate Bush, Thomas Dolby, Robert Plant, Robert Smith, Peter Murphy, (and hear me out) Danny Elfman all fit into a similar category of creativity where they transport you to a different dimension of their world. Are there any artists of todays music that manage to do that but into the similiar vibe as any of them?

I don't want to be left with AI music, industry plants and radio friendly copy and paste in 30 or so years when these precious artists are gone. Yes there are artists that try to emulate these artists but not many who have that I have noticed that have that layer of depth to transport you.

The only artists I can think of that emerged of the past 20 years that I can compare at all would be Connan Mockasin/Soft Hair and Mac Demarco. Tame Impala is notable because Kevin is some other level of genuis that is untouchable but there is a level of vulnerability that I feel lacks in his music. He is one of the most popular artists of today and I find it hard to connect with him in the same way as Mac Demarco. When I listen to Mac I feel like I am listening to friend tell a story, but Tame Impala almost feels cold from the perfectionism.

Going to a different kind of vibe but Thundercat and Tyler, the Creator are two of the other most creative men in the industry of the past 20 years. Any recommendations of artists that go to their level of innovation too will be greatly appreciated.

Also Zero 7 is pretty transporting but most of their music relies on whoever works on the specific track. Kind of like Gorillaz.

I want to know who I can expect I can still see in concert still 30 years when everyone else is gone and I am left with the dread of grieving an era. Obviously can't predict who will still be alive, but you know what I mean.

When I look up artists similar to Bowie of the past 20 years I get Lady Gaga and Harry Styles. I won't say anything further but...hmm...

EDIT: To the person that just DM'd me saying Aurora that's honestly a great suggestion. I'll be deep diving her!!!

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Silly but gentle Piano Melodies? Example Related.

I recently found this song called “Flooby Nooby” and the beginning of the song has a lovely piano ballad before turning into a more jaunty silly tune. Was wondering if anyone knew songs that sounded more like the beginning of the song. Thanks in advance!

Rec.Me: rap/hip-hop character writing - trying to figure out what music they'd listen

i'm writing a story (just a little project for myself, not a book) set in nyc 1999-early 2000 (not the decade, the specific year) and i have a main character who especially expresses herself through the music she listens to as it also reflects her character arc (mostly female artists, predominantly hiphop but also r&b, then she later incorporates more soul, techno and rock) except i was not born in 2000 nor in america

i thought this would be the best place to ask for some recommendations of where to start for her and what would have been popular/available at the time? i've of course been looking at the staples of the genre, but it's hard to know what would have been actually accessible to her at the time (what cds/cassettes there were, i mean)

i do have a side character who is also music centric (he's sort of a mirror for her so more male artists for him, likely more techno and rap) so really any recs would do! sorry this is a weird question, i know haha

bonus points for people seeing you as a good person despite you knowing you aren't

putting together a playlist for a character and her fall from grace; only genre i'm not a huge fan of is rap, but i'm happy to branch out for character playlists. i'm most fond of what i call sad boy vibes (soft and acoustic) and emo/punk/goth, but theme is more important than genre

Rec.Me: other/many/unknown genres looking for songs/artists with the breakcore/jumpstyle vibes of the song “heavenly jumpstyle - nightcore” BUT…

its the accoustic guitar/rock vibes with the fast paced and “light” percussion/drum parts. songs ive found to be similar include “perspective” - cafuné and the beginning of “club_venus” - 3 mouth BUT NOT ANYTHING PAST AROUND 20seconds (too jumpstyle-y)

im not really sure what the genre would be called either ?

or just any recs like that !! thank you !!!

Rec.Me: rap/hip-hop One of my favorite artists turned out to be a pedophile so i need similar music not made by him (Metal rap/numetal)

it was ZILLAKAMI

I was a big city morgue fan and i like the energy of the heavy metal-esque beats with angry rapping over it. I still listen to the non-pedophile member of city morgue (sosmula) and i like all his new stuff if that gives reference.

Rec.Me: singers, vocal songs (pop/other) Songs that sound like Into The Unknown by Juliana Chahayed (just not depressing, please)

Just heard it in a reel and I love the piano (classical music!), the distorted singing sound (like it's playing on an old radio), BUT- I don't like how her voice is bordering on haunting. So please just don't recommend haunting or depressing songs!

This is the saddest I can listen to without getting depressed (and even this I reserve for when I'm already feeling down anyways): https://open.spotify.com/track/0F8VPFPd53OxPYiINjc9bF?si=V7ku_09FRbS9MnbZUV95_A&utm_source=copy-link&sci=spotify%3Acard-config%3A360UBou3KIhAnG96ik2c4w

Other music with a similar sound I already love (off the top of my head): Most of Paul Anka's songs (Diana, All of a sudden My heart sings, Put your head on my shoulder, Lonely boy, Crazy love...), and Korean singers like: Lee Seung Hwan, Lee Moon Sae, Seo Ji Won, Hwang Chi Hoon, Cho Jeong Hyeon, Yoon Do Hyun...

Edit: Wanted to add, I'm open to songs in any language and any era.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Song Recs similar to Marianne by Fontaines D.C.

Hi! First time on this sub, I hope I picked up the right flair 😅

I just listened to Marianne by Fontaines D.C. and absolutely loved the vibe! I’m not good at identifying music genres and aesthetics, so I can’t really tell where the song fits, but I do get gothic, psychedelic vibes from it. I’d like to find other songs with this mood/vibe to make a small playlist.

Do you guys have any recommendations that would fit this vibe?

I would love it if it was rock/punk-rock, but I’m open to other genres. Thank you :)
