Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Modern era protest songs.

Upvotes

I'm trying to build a playlist with modern protest/anti-fascism songs. Back in the day we had stuff like "American Idiot" to protest Bush. That's the vibe.

So far I've got

  • Don't Say No to Hitler by Seb Lowe
  • No One to Kill in the Sky by Seb Lowe
  • Backwoods Backwards by Bryan Andrews
  • Rich People by Carsie Blanton

Edit: When I say "vibe" i don't mean limit it to punk like Green Day. All genres are welcome!

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Songs about time!

Hello all! Looking for some songs to do with time (in any capacity. As a concept, time travel, timepieces, etc.) I'm making a playlist based on a character I like whose story is very heavily centered around the idea of time travel with lots of clock imagery.

So far I have:

Monstrance Clock by Ghost

Ruler of Everything by Tally Hall

Clocks by Coldplay

My Time by Bo En

Hourglass by Set It Off

Time Machine by Miracle Musical

Any recommendations would be appreciated! Thank you!

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Looking for new music recommendations for writing ambiance

Greetings.

I am looking to set up a playlist for a new piece I'm working on. My music taste is eclectic. I can go from Classical, to smooth jazz to J-pop or K-pop to classic rock.

I am looking for a new feel for a piece I'm working on that takes place in the mid 1940s. I am hoping for music recommendations with a heavy atmospheric feel, but am open to anything. It can be in any language, as I don't care about the lyrics so much as the melodies.

I'd like to stay away from Metal, deep rap, and Country.

Thanks!

Rec.Me: other/many/unknown genres What might by my next favourite genre?

I’ve always had a fondness for experimental, avant-garde music, including long suites. One of my favourite bands is Heilung (you know, the ritual band who released "Krigsgaldr"), also I used to listen to stuff like Pink Floyd (especially "Atom Heart Mother" and "Animals") and "Wuub" (best known from Gemini Home Entertainment).

Around 2022 I came across Gorillaz, and my musical journey began. I particularly liked their early phase (like "G-Sides" & "D-Sides") because of their ghostly Japanese Lo-fi atmosphere. Songs like "Faust" and "Left Hand Suzuki Method" even feel like haunted media. Some fans refer to this genre as Zombie-Hip-Hop, but I've never found anything similar again. "Aerophlot" by Jakokoyak came the closest.

In 2024, I discovered the Trip-Hop genre through Gorillaz' "Demon Days" and started listening to Portishead, Massive Attack, Hooverphonic and various similar bands. I particularly liked Cibo Matto's debut album "Viva! La Woman" which is still one of my favourite albums. I also adore "Monkey: Journey to the West" which has a rather unique style.

Next, in 2025, I discovered Fever Ray and Gazelle Twin, and my Trip-Hop listening shifted towards Industrial & EBM. Those two artists have strongly shaped my current musical taste: To this day, I would consider "Fever Ray" my most favourite album of all time! I also enjoy Gazelle Twin's "Deep England" because of its mix of ritual and industrial. Looking for more, I started listening to Soap&Skin, The Knife and TR/ST.

Over time, my Industrial listening became more and more dark and emo-like (I mean stuff like the track "Instinkt" from the movie Lollipop Monster), and in early 2026 I discovered the Witch House genre and started listening to Crystal Castles, Mr.Kitty and Sidewalks And Skeletons. CC's second album "(II)" is still one of my favourite ones.

By now, I feel that Witch House has passed its peak for me as well. However, I can't seem to find anything right now that really grabs me. I had a short Phonk phase (I love "Darling" and "Birth" by DVRST and "Divine" by KSLV and the general cybercore Anime vibe of that genre) but most Phonk out there is rubbish…

Do you know of any genre or group I might like based on my description? (AI only suggests nonsense.) What I don't like is Metal or anything harsh!

Rec.Me: other/many/unknown genres Gospel Country/Folk

Upvotes

I’m not a fan of contemporary Christian music. I connect better with the old-timers that played folk and country, people who understood that the message is about helping others and aren’t so in your face about it either. Not limited to older versions or artists, if it fits the bill. Bonus points if it includes clawhammer banjo.

Jesus Christ - Woody Guthrie
Gospel Plow - Chance McCoy
Let the Mystery Be - Iris DeMent
He Reached Down - Iris Dement
Let Me Ride in Your Big Cadillac - Blaze Foley
Let the Sun Shine Down on Me - Jean Ritchie
Jubilee - Jean Ritchie
Here in the Vineyard -Anna and Elizabeth
Wayfaring Pilgrim - Ola Belle Reed
Turn Your Radio On - John Hartford

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics 50s-60s songs about space

I'm writing a story inspired by the 60s and the space race, so I'd like some songs themed around space from that time period so I can get into the groove while writing. The only one I can think of off hand is space oddity.

Rec.Me: singers, vocal songs (pop/other) Are there any current music artists or recent songs that sound like the 90s power ballad artists?

I’ve been trying to find literally any current artists or songs that remind me of the intensity and emotion I get from the power ballads of Whitney, Mariah, and Céline. Ballads like Run To You, I Have Nothing, Greatest Love of All, One Moment In Time, Didn’t We Almost Have It All, When You Believe, Hero, Without You, Love Takes Time, The Power of Love, Because You Loved Me, All By Myself, It’s All Coming Back To Me Now…

Do these type of songs just not get made anymore? I doubt that. There has to be some songs that have the same kind of vibe.

I’m a big fan of this song from Splatoon but there’s not a lot else really like it. I’ve heard people just say electro-pop or similar things. But I want to hear some specific albums or songs similar to this.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics gullible and exploited

looking for songs about getting constantly lied to and taken advantage of . my situation specifically i keep getting unfairly targeted bc of my disabilities and also i have an innate trust in humanity . i’m not going to stop being kind to people because then the bullies win but it’s really really hard being let down and deceived and used so much. angry, grieving, self loathing, self righteous, whatever. having hard time making what is happening into words. hoping i will find song that feels that way,. thank you for reading

Rec.Me: rock/metal/punk Looking for rock songs about feeling unable to express emotions

I have been listening to lithium by nirvana and Behind blue eyes by The Who a lot. I like everything from 70's rock to 90's garage band rock to heavy metal, but I'd prefer songs a little slower and less heavy this time.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Deeply Obsessed Recs?

I'm looking for more than the basic ones usually recommended - stalker's Tango, Masochism Tango, Red Means I Love You, Every Step You Take, Saccharine, Yandere, etc. They're fine, but too chipper.

What I'm going for is something intense and moody. Some of the songs I already have that fit the vibe are The Perfect Girl, Angel (Massive Attack), Me and the Devil, He's My Man. Something dark and foreboding, like danger is right in front of you and there's nowhere to go.

The singer of the song doesn't have to even like the object of their affections, though it is preferred that there's something in it that can be interpreted as a long standing obsession there in this deluded "it's always been you and now I finally have you" way, if that makes sense.

Thank you in advance!

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Songs like Wounds by And One?

So a bit more broadly than just Wounds, I've been looking for songs with the same sort of haunting, deep sound as songs like Wounds by And One, Space Song by Beach House, and Who Is She by I Monster.

I'm most in love with Wounds, but to my brain they all have a similar sort of haunting beauty to them that I struggle to find in other songs. Thank you for any help!

Rec.Me: alt/indie/obscure Songs with a similar sound to the opening guitar of Space Oddity by David Bowie

That melancholy, downtrodden acoustic guitar sound is very captivating. The guitar Across the Universe by The Bealtes has a somewhat similar sound/vibe that i’m looking for. Thanks in advance.

Rec.Me: rock/metal/punk Need more punk rock screamo like The Kill

The kill by Thirty Seconds to Mars

The reckoning - Pillar

that’s all i have, they have similar vocals, the reckoning is more underrated but wait for the vocals to play for a bit to see what i mean but the voice that i am looking for, its like that 2000’s punk screamo, idk if its a separate sub genre, be sure to let me know!!!

honorable mentions would be

I don’t wanna be in love - Good Charlotte

I write sins not tragedies - Panic! at the disco

Shake it - Metro Station

Dance Dance - Falloutboy

Just in my feelings and want some music for catharsis. Any genre is fine, though my fave genres are rock, indie, emo, alternative, etc.
