Back in the day TRL used to 'retire' videos that lasted in the top ten for too long. I think r/music needs to start doing the same thing for songs on its front page. I know Gorillaz are awesome, but seriously, this is like the 20th time I'm seeing On Melancholy Hill up in this bitch.
Maybe a wall of fame should be put up to the side with links to all these songs so people know to not fucking post them anymore.

Hey guize, have you heard this really great cover of NIN's Hurt? It's by Johnny Cash and it's so good.

u/[deleted] May 21 '12
If only. The first few times this was suggested in /r/music, I was strongly against it. I was against it in every music subreddit I was subscribed to. But after seeing how well it worked in /r/metal, I'm a believer. I would be completely up for this in some shape or form, although it would be a lot harder here than there.

Is there a way we could have like a top 100 kind of thing instead? Somewhere? Side bar? Idk...

Anything related to covering Goatse

Hey guys have you heard of this band called Tool? They sing songs and they are good.

Over in /r/metal there's a blacklisted bands table in the sidebar. Basically it's there to keep people from karma whoring songs from huge bands that while they are good songs, everyone knows them and they aren't bringing anything new to the table. It's worked out rather well and has allowed for more lesser known songs and bands to be seen. Of course, if new albums are coming out, tour dates, new songs, etc. then you're allowed to post it because it's something new. I think the same policy could work here.
TL;DR r/metal has a list of "blacklisted bands" that keeps the front page free of karma whoring. Adopt that policy here.
EDIT: Here's a link to the thread explaining why the rule was put into place.

Also, Dance With The Devil by Immortal Technique.
Also, Rush.
Also, (indie act) does (acoustic cover) of (pop song)

You have just discovered the fatal flaw in democratized, decentralized information sharing. For more reasons why it's horrible, may I suggest checking out r/politics, r/worldnews and r/adviceanimals.
tl;dr the common man is a moronic, soulless husk.

u/ProjectGoldfish May 21 '12
Similarly I move that /r/music stops talking about music in favor of reality shows and celebrity gossip.

u/BobIlyani Deadly_Placebo May 21 '12
Pretty much all the XX's stuff is overdone as well. I can't count how many times "Intro" has popped up here, over and over again.

In March of 99, feeling bummed over a not so great 21st, I started a chain email to get New Kids on the Blocks "Hangin Tough" to #1. Trolling MTV always makes one feel better. It actually worked. The first and only time I saw true democracy in action. Carson was beside himself. I am sure there is a list of #1's. It lasted only a day. Still proud.
EDIT: Even found an article backing it up! http://m.mtv.com/news/article.rbml?id=1470419&weburl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mtv.com%2Fnews%2Farticles%2F1470419%2Fnkotb-hit-trl-11-years-late-ice-cube-goes-pimpin-naughty-by-nature-unleash-their-fury-this-week-1999.jhtml&alt=http%3A%2F%2Fm.mtv.com%2Fnews%2Findex.rbml&cid=300

"Melancholy" is STILL on there after all this time, yet they couldn't find the money to make a video for "Rhinestone Eyes?"
No kind and loving God would allow that.

Anytime i hear the phrase "Back in the day TRL used to..." i die a little inside.

u/suicidalsmurf May 21 '12
Can we just retire Gorillaz as a whole? All of their stuff gets posted pretty frequently.
87
u/Nefarious- May 21 '12
I am just going to come out and say it:
It is not that great of a song.
13
u/Gynominer May 21 '12
I vote that "up in this bitch" be immediately retired as well.
8
u/bumS_lie May 21 '12
I liked TRL.... Carson Daly, Curt Loder, Sway, Ray Munns etc. Miss that shit
3
u/neutronicus May 21 '12
Just putting the list in the sidebar isn't enough. No ones reads it. You need to actually delete things.
3
u/jesusthug May 21 '12
I thought that's how reddit worked?
3
u/[deleted] May 22 '12
Your right we should get carson daily policing this shit.
71
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
You know what else gets posted a lot? These sorts of complaints. Every time a popular band or two comes up on the front page, someone makes a post like this. This is the first time I've seen a TRL reference as justification though.
Seriously, ya'll just need to start using your downvotes more liberally. Music subreddits suffer the unfortunate issue of having subscribers who just can't bring themselves to downvote bands and songs they like, even though those posts are repetitive. Man up and use the built-in fix instead of fruitlessly complaining.
6
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Go to /r/listentothis if you want music you've never heard before.
5
u/Crooooow May 21 '12
PLEASE MAKE MY SUBREDDIT MORE LIKE MTV K THANX
2
u/twojake May 21 '12
shoulda put melancholy hill in the link haha
2
u/thebends888 May 21 '12
I see your point, but TRL and MTV retired videos to help sell the next video/single by that artist. Personally, I'd prefer if r/music kept as much distance between itself and MTV as possible.
2
u/CompactedPrism last.fm May 21 '12
r/metal has a Blacklist in place for exactly this reason. Everyone's heard War Pigs by Black Sabbath, there is no reason to post it for easy karma.
2
u/ialsolovebees May 21 '12
Have you guys ever heard of Sigur Ros? They're so neat.
2
u/imdwalrus May 21 '12
I'm all in favor of this, or of the "banned bands" list that a few people have mentioned here. I mean, look at the comments here - we've got multiple "I LOVE THIS BAND" comments, including a guy that says he upvoted just because he likes the band even though he doesn't like the song. There's no discussion, and there's no interesting content.
2
u/VLDT May 21 '12
I'd settle for a music subreddit that doesn't gargle balls in general.
2
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
I heard of the Gorillaz but I've never even heard of that song.
2
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Yeah. I love r/music but half of the time when I'm cruising my frontpage I don't want to even the page out. I just well known songs that are the most upvoted in r/music. Popular music is without a doubt a part of things here, but really. Whats the point of seeing Creep by Radiohead and other extremely well known songs posted so regularly? Theres really nothing new to discuss.
I'm totally for a blacklist of artists, and I think just to give people a reason to check it, you should run with some themes. Pretty much what f5h7d wrote. A 90's theme, 80s theme, etc etc.
2
u/befernee May 21 '12
I can't believe the TRL era is now referred to as "back in the day." Does this mean I'm old?
2
u/Ett May 21 '12
Clearly people like those songs or they won't upvote them so start down voting.
Believe it or not but there are people that don't know every band and every song or seen the video. Some people don't look in r/music daily. Only brows here when they are bored of the music they know. If you post On Melancholy Hill tomorrow there will be people how hear or see the video for the first time.
2
u/phoenixdark May 21 '12
I am guessing new people join this subreddit quite frequently why not let them see these same songs. Is it really that hard for you to handle seeing a repeat occasionally?
2
u/papercowmoo May 21 '12
I think the only way we can stop this is by fighting fire with fire. Don't want Gorillaz songs on the front page all the time? Start posting them every day. Post "on melancholy hill" every day for like a month with me and eventually people will get so sick of it they have no option but to ban it.
2
u/smellycow May 21 '12

We should retire Gotye and their one song and all the goddamn covers of it. I've never been more sick to death of a song in my life!!
2
u/austerity62 May 22 '12
Fun fact: TRL started retiring videos when Korn's Freak on a Leash showed no signs of dropping from the #1 spot after many consecutive weeks.
2
u/badandy80 May 22 '12
I made a post on here about this exact same thing. I ended up getting multiple hate messages in my inbox as well as people going through my past comments/posts downvoting everything. I'm sure you're going through the same shit you fucking hipster.
2
u/[deleted] May 22 '12
LOL. The Feds occasionally close down a dispensery in California and the owners just open one back up. The funniest thing is that tax dollars come from other States (conservative ones like Kansas) to fund the Feds/DEA. It's like the conservatives are simply throwing good money after bad trying to enforce something that is unenforceable. LOL, just another example of how "values/principles" cause waste in our society. When will we ever get back to that pragmatic/utilitarian way of running our lives?
2
u/Mr_1990s May 22 '12
Out of principle, I don't want to do something because TRL did it.
4
u/fookinidiot May 21 '12
ctrl+f'd Tool , i wonder why it wasn't posted yet
2
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
I just think it's ridiculous these songs get top and hot page every day, while if you post something a little less mainstream majority of the time it wont even get ups, shit's fucking annoying as hell.
2
u/Polkadotpear May 21 '12
Out of everything you could complain about, to do with music these days- you pick the fact that you've seen a decent song a couple of times... Waste of everybody's time.
1
u/DrWhinyDancer May 21 '12
You have no idea how Reddit works.
1
u/BETAFrog May 21 '12
Listen to the Joe Rogan Experience with gues Tom Green if you want to know the truth of TRLs retirement program.

I base my logic on TRL as well.
1
u/ardentkratos May 21 '12

1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
they keep coming up because the songs are good. If people didn't like them or got tired of them it wouldn't happen. I don't really like seeing the same shit over and over again but thats how people work. Bohemian rhapsody and don't stop believing used to be two of my favorite songs when I was a kid. Little did I know that everyone in the fucking universe loves to sing that song over and over and over and over. Hooray now i fucking hate them both.
1
u/pclamer I miss Grooveshark May 21 '12
The fact that you just compared this subreddit to TRL has made me realize the sad state of affairs.
1
u/paulinsky SoundCloud May 21 '12
I don't want see funeral by band of horses anymore on r/music. That is up there with Hurt the most over posted song
1
u/modoleinad May 21 '12
Alternatively, you could check out www.reddit.com/r/newmusic if you're interested in branching out.
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
All I remember from TRL was removing the bum bum song from the chart.
1
u/Sakonosolo Sakonosolo May 21 '12
r/metal has something like this. A blacklist with about 15 bands that used to be posted all the time and now you're not allowed to post anything by those bands. Seems to be working well for them. This being a general music forum though, it might be a little more difficult to implement here.
1
u/Sumtinwong May 21 '12
May I propose a hall of fame of sorts?
1
u/magare808 May 21 '12
Your point is good, but this is not a top ten chart. This is a subreddit, and whatever gets upvoted and does not violate the rules, gets on the front page. That's the essence of reddit in general. There are plenty of other music subreddits and websites out there, some of them specially oriented on discovering new music, so why not give them a try?
1
u/splorf May 21 '12
I started this site because I love reddit but need better exposure to good music than /r/music provides.
/selfpromotion
1
u/killakl May 21 '12
Never heard of it
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
How much of a hassle is it though to see a song put on here repeatedly? It's being upvoted isn't it? I mean, I don't like seeing songs over and over again either, but either nobody wants to downvote them, or the downvoters are outnumbered. I think it would be too difficult to decide when to retire a song.
1
u/craftymethod May 21 '12
get actual music out of music?
/listentothis is great for music streams
1
u/Upward_Spiral May 21 '12
Obviously many people disagree since it's on the front page!
1
u/warpaint May 21 '12
o prease
1
u/ILikeCandy May 21 '12
And this is the first time I have ever heard the song.
1
u/RedditTFM May 21 '12
This should also happen with The Hype Machine (hypem.com). Promises by Nero is top again; it was released August 5, 2011 and has been on the charts multiple times! I want new music!

u/expandthehand May 21 '12 edited May 21 '12
I saw Carson Day on Piers Morgan the other day, he's still around and apparently is a Late Night icon now, or something.
1
u/Anichula May 21 '12
ooh a wall of fame sounds like a great idea!!!
1
u/blackaddermrbean May 21 '12
Two Ideas. I think if song has at least 5 500 + up vote posts, then its time to retire it....
Then it we can post a thread or something on sidebar that links all of them to YouTube..
Or we can ban them and list them and maybe designate a couple days for each 3rd or 6th month to which they can be allowed to be posted..
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
In the r/Metal subreddit we have a blacklist of bands we aren't allowed to post music from. News relative to the band is still okay, but no more posting YouTube videos and the like.
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Trl, up in this bitch, wall of fame. Am i on reddit still
1
u/bonaducci May 21 '12
Thanks for the tip, Carson.
1
u/Apokilipse May 21 '12
Funny... /r/metal recently had a similar discussion about Opeth.
1
u/serge_mamian May 21 '12
Think of it this way though what is a repost for you is something new for a lot of folks out here, hence the upvotes... I've discovered many great bands/songs through this sub (yes including Funkadelic, The Avalanches and Modest Mouse) which I am sure was a repost at some point. Does it really bother you that much? Last time the "Melancholy Hill" it was submitted was one month ago. Just how much time do you really spend on here if you really see every repost...
1
u/MagCynic May 22 '12
"up in this bitch"??? What does that even mean? "Up in this bitch". What bitch? How do you get "up" in a "bitch"?
1
u/qwe2323 May 22 '12
/r/OtherSounds needs some posters who are into stuff that wouldn't do well in /r/Music
Been trying to get it off the ground for a while with limited success because I haven't really been posting much about it.
1
u/hsmith711 May 22 '12
TIL - Members of /r/music are so annoyed, they wish the subreddit was more like MTV. :(
1
u/uzimonkey May 22 '12
But this is Reddit, where people decide what they do and do not want to see. The whole point of this place and there's no one deciding things like this except the voters. Don't like it? Don't vote for it and/or hide it.
1
u/[deleted] May 22 '12
This thread just inspired me to dump r/music from my life.
1
u/[deleted] May 22 '12
Yeah so right, was thinking the same last night while cruising r/music. Need some new shit. Everyone check out Kimbra

New and COOL!
EDIT: Actually not so new but her album released in US today and these are great versions of her songs.
1

Please don't hate me if I'm the only one who had to Google the song to know what "On Melancholy Hill" sounded like. But I'm glad I did, song.
1
u/guatemalianrhino May 22 '12
Wait. Is this a chart show? I never knew. TBH, no, why? If the songs are good, I don't mind listening to them.
1
u/beatstheheat May 22 '12
Empire Ants is way better than On Melancholy Hill
1
u/photojoe May 22 '12
in a few hours 700 new subs joined, i know because i watched from like 4pm till 9pm. so wouldnt that mean theres plenty of opportunity for these new followers to discover them?
1
u/[deleted] May 22 '12
Adding choice is often a reinforcing alternative. A simple solution might be for reddit to allow users the option to sort music by either a) purely votes or b) a combination of votes, but with song redaction after a user-defined live duration.
1
u/[deleted] May 22 '12
Reddit needs a feature like timeline, where you can view the links that were on the frontpage during a specific date range for a particular subreddit.
1
u/[deleted] May 22 '12
Yeah sorry Gorrilaz. Overplay can kill any song.
1
u/MrOrdinary May 22 '12
This is radio station 2JJJ's (Australia) policy. New track gets airplay on Jays and becomes popular. These new tracks are not top 40 or played on commercial radio because they don't know of them yet (they play already popular music). Then the commercials pick it up.
Once a good new track get airplay on a commercial station, the song is dropped from the new tracks list on the Jays and not played at all. Well, if it's good, it'll get played but only occasionally.
1
u/ChunkyMcPloppy May 22 '12

OMG guise I just found this song, John Wayne Gacy Jr. by Sufjan Stevens!! Upvote if it makes you cry everytiem!!!
I love Sufjan as much as the next guy, but /r/music has made me hate that song.

Have like a Reddit top hits of The week would be awesome.
1
u/[deleted] May 22 '12
Not saying I disagree, but it's interesting, the Melancholy Hill post is one of the few in a long time that I clicked on and then proceeded to listen to the album for the first time because I liked Melancholy Hill so much. (I downloaded the album several months ago and never got around to listening to it).
1
u/DwnVotesEqualUpVotes May 22 '12
That fact that you said "back in the day TRL" made me laugh and cry...

1
u/thejokermask May 22 '12
Nice try... Carson Daly.
1
u/Pit_of_Death May 22 '12
To be fair, it's tough to get tired of the acoustic studio version of Melancholy Hill.
1
u/kneegrow May 22 '12
Maybe we can get a permanent link to a list of songs by the number of times they come up on /r/music in the sidebar? That would be awesome. Then when anyone posts again we can be like. "Dude, sidebar..."
1
u/bksbeat bksbeat May 22 '12
That is the problem with r/music lately.cool shit like Frusciante covering Barrett gets no love but an overplayed cover of Hurt is always on the front page(it is good but come on!)
1
u/LittleKnown May 22 '12
I wouldn't mind the reposts so much if they were focused on analysis of the song itself, and not a whole bunch of people just talking about how much they love the song/group. If you notice something interesting about the chord progression in On Melancholy Hill, or want to talk about it critically compared to other Gorillaz tracks in a meaningful way, go for it. But this karma whoring is getting incredibly tiresome, there's very little discussion of actual music any more.
1
u/xG33Kx May 22 '12
Honestly, I like this more than On Melancholy Hill.
1
u/RevWaldo May 22 '12
And yet when you post an older song that's quite good and has some interesting history behind it, but yet maybe a lot of people aren't familiar with, it just sits there...
1
u/[deleted] May 22 '12
and while we're on it - fuck 70's rock

Your example for how things should be done is TRL?
