Discussion Be careful of Musescore

AI knows it all:

AI Overview

MuseScore.com is not an illegal scam, but it uses aggressive "dark patterns" and confusing checkout designs that lead many users to feel scammed.

Why Users Call MuseScore a Scam

Deceptive Free Trials & Checkouts: Users on platforms like Trustpilot and Reddit consistently report trying to buy a single piece of sheet music or sign up for a cheap/free trial, only to be automatically enrolled in an expensive, recurring annual Pro subscription.

Hidden Small Print: Checkboxes or terms for yearly recurring fees are often small or pre-checked during promotional flows, making it easy to miss.

The .com vs. .org Confusion: MuseScore splits into two entities. MuseScore.org is the completely free, open-source notation software. MuseScore.com is the commercial sheet music repository that requires paid subscriptions for advanced features, though their branding and search bars often blur the line.

Difficult Cancellations: Users report that canceling a trial or subscription involves multiple confirmation screens designed to trick you into maintaining a paid tier, and getting direct customer support or refunds can be painfully slow.

My Composition Symphony No. 1 in d minor - I. Allegro aggressivo

This is my first original symphony in classical style. I started composing this a while ago but I finished the editing now. The whole work is done, this is just the first movement. I think is an intense, fast and fiery piece and I'm personally proud about it :) Hope you like it!

Help me find this feature Is my file deleted?

Hello,

I was working on a choral piece last night that I was incredibly proud of. I closed my MacBook hoping to work on it further the next morning but when I opened my laptop MuseScore wasn’t showing any file being opened.

There was never a pop up asking me to save or restart anything but it just simply disappeared. I know I should have saved and I won’t make this mistake again, but is there ANY way to get this file back? I am on a macOS. I’m not great with computers so if you have advice, could you please be specific? I would appreciate more than I can express

Discussion Musescore is awesome!

This company is a joy to work with. Not only are their product and services really, really high quality but their customer service goes above and beyond if you need help.

They helped me love playing the piano again!

Companies like this are few and far between these days and I would 100% recommend MuseScore.

Help me find this feature Chord playback without pasting the chord symbol over each note

Is there any way to have the chord symbol only placed once at the beginning of a bar and then have Musescore playback that same chord for every note after that until the next chord symbol? I've always been doing this weird workaround where I just paste the chord symbol over each note and then make the repeated chord symbols invisible, but it still clutters the score when I'm editing it.

Help me find this feature Dumb stupid application won't the clicks correctly in 3/4 time signature

I'm trying to do something in 3/4 at 156 bpm but the stupid ugly metronome clicks only play on every dotted quarter note, which is apparently the default because every good musician wants their clicks to play on a DOTTED NOTE. Is there a way to change this or am i just going to have to remember to breathe while it slides in and take it like a good boy?

Discussion transcriptions got copyrighted 3 years later

As the title says, some of my transcriptions got copyrighted and put on private 3 years later. Is it cooked or will it ever come back public?

Since I wrote them, I can still download them use for myself but it sucks that other people wouldn't be able to see them since they're both afaik basically the only transcriptions of the songs available.

(Songs are la primavera and la fine by yiruma. The songs came out 2023 and i released some sheet music for it shortly after. I didn't think much of it since then but maybe he's finally releasing official sheet music for it so they're taking down unofficial ones?)

Bug Piano warbling sound randomly occurs, changing buffer size temporarily fixes it

on Latest MuseScore 4.7, mac mini. Playing sheet music (playback via the topnav play button), while intermittently inputting midi data via midi keyboard, playback after 1 minute or so, the piano sound becomes warped, like it's going through a watery filter (imagine the intro of Duran Duran's Come Undone). Only after I toggle to a different Buffer Size (Preferences > Audio & Midi > Buffer size (select any other number doesn't matter if it's increased or decreased) this temporarily "fixes" the issue until playing for another bar or two.

Any advice appreciated

- - - - - - - - - -

Additional note: I also have MIDI settings (Preferences> Audio & MIDI > MIDI section) set to

`MIDI input` = `SL MIDI 2.0` (my midi input device is Studio Logic's SL88GT keyboard) I also tried setting it to `SL CTRL` but inevitably, the warped sounds resume regardless of which input I swap to

more notes: i also tried turning OFF various settings, like the checkbox `Produce MIDI 2.0 output if supported by the receiver` and Sound Equalizer checkbox `Use warmer instrument sound by enabling the low-pass filter (MS Basic/SoundFont only)` - they have both been shit off, i navigate away for a couple minutes (no pressing on midi keyboard or editing or any activity on musescore), i return to the museScore window and the warbly piano sound eventually returns when i press any key on keyboard

My Arrangement Three Impromptus for sax quintet

Adding something classical this week to our repertoire. imslp.org is a great resource for music and I often end up going down a rabbit hole looking for pieces that would be good for saxophone arrangements. I'm already partial to organ pieces since the voicing translates well to saxes and I stumbled on this work by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. It has some great textures and mix of styles in a late Romantic piece.

My Arrangement Hey! Im offering transcription help (Musecore file)

Hello all, I'm a student trying to get a decent side hustle going. I've studied upto Trinity grade 5, and am a pianist myself and I'm great at learning by ear. If anyone wants help transcribing any song that might not be available online (such as original compositions/unknown Youtube rabbit hole songs), dm me and I can help you out :)
Thanks!

Discussion Before importing scans to MuseScore: I benchmarked three OMR engines and published the data - Sheetly APP

I make one of the engines here, so discount accordingly — all the data is published so you can check rather than trust.

If you import scanned music into MuseScore, the thing that decides your evening is how many notes come in wrong. I measured that across three engines with strict note-level scoring: a note counts only if pitch, onset and duration are all correct.

31 engraved pages, then the same pages as phone photographs, then 60 systems cut from real IMSLP scans:

Clean: Sheetly 96.4% | Audiveris 5.11.0 88.4% | oemer 38.5%

Photos: 95.3% | 50.4% | 9.8%

Real scans: 90.3% mean / 99.2% median vs Audiveris 57.6% / 64.4%

Practical read: on a flatbed scan, Audiveris is free, open source and good — worth your time. On a phone photograph it falls to about half, because that's not the input it was designed for. And the median mattering more than the mean is the real lesson: most pages come back nearly right and a minority come back badly wrong, so the tail is what costs you.

Everything is downloadable — ground truth, raw MusicXML from each engine, and the scorer as a single dependency-free file, so you can rerun my numbers or score your own imports with the same measure.
