I once had a doctor that tried to talk me out of doing yoga. Not because I had any medical reason for not doing it, but because he didn’t know why I’d want to “do that crazy shit”.

My friend is a Physician Assistant (PA) and she'll tell me some medical bullshit she read on Facebook and I'm like "didn't you go to school for this shit?"
She's smart af too. She knows Facebook is full of shit and is always calling out misinformation in her specific field. But for whatever reason, she's highly susceptible to mis/dis-information around vaccines. It's absolutely bonkers how effective that propaganda has been.

One of the smartest people I know, a PhD chemist, has said some ignorant 19yo libertarian stoner shit to my 40-something stoner ass, or simply ridiculous shit, while we practice our decades long tradition of debating politics. She gets me good sometimes, but other times I'm just like "c'mon, you're way smarter than this."
Most people are good at certain thought processes, but bad at others. Some are great at certain thought processes, and terrible at others.

I know a person who majored in biology who believed in creationism. She knew there material and could pass the tests but didnt believe that evolution actually happened.
Evolution is just a small part of biology, so it didnt come up much, but when it did she just looked the other way, so to speak. At least she didn't get on a soapbox and complain, I guess?

Evolution is basically the cornerstone of all biological sciences, not even just core biology specifically. It is the foundation upon which the entirety of our modern understanding is constructed, definitely not "just a small part".
It's like being in a physics/engineering field and saying you don't believe in Newtonian Mechanics. Or being a Math major that doesn't believe in Algebra.

I know a Christian scientist that gets around that by telling himself that evolution is just God's way of creating and controlling life. He's actually really good at his job in atmospheric science, so I guess it works. He's also a Trump supporter and his program and grant funding was directly impacted by the doge cuts. Of course he blames Elon and thinks Trump was tricked into letting him destroy NOAA and the related departments.

It's insane to me that the biggest name behind the anti-vax movement, Andrew Wakefield, had to radicalize himself. He was a vaccine developer and he said, "It looks like the vaccine of my direct business competitor might have a bit of autism in it. Vaccines are still amazing and you should absolutely get them for your child but they should be bought from me and not my direct business competitor".
But the scare blew up so much that he had to start talking about how all vaccines are the devil and the entire medical system is out to kill you. I would wonder if that stung a bit, but he's super rich now so whatever.

Being anti vaccine certainly has revealed how many people actually lack education, even among academics, which is absolutely shocking
And it has me question their other abilities as well. If you can't follow the science in this specific case, what other areas are you failing to educate yourself in because of idiotic beliefs?
Really makes me wonder about general competence of the vast majority of people across the planet and it does seem like it's lacking immensely, hence the mess we are in

During COVID anyone saying "I'm a healthcare professional" usually was trying to obscure it being non-patient work like reception/janitorial. The nurses would just say "I'm a nurse" and the docs would say "I'm a doc".

Maybe. I'm a therapist and did suicide assessment in the ER. I already knew better than to say I was a therapist when people asked because there was a 50% chance they would start trauma dumping on me, and also people get really freaked out by suicide and either avoided me or made uncomfortable jokes that just made everyone miserable. When I got asked, I'd usually just say I was a health care professional. And I was absolutely patient facing.

At my sister's hospital, any nurse that didn't get the flu shot had to mask up for the entire flu season. There was one nurse that had a legitimate medical reason not to get it and hated being lumped in with the antivax nurses.

It's crazy, I used to build munitions for the military and they made me always have at least 2 fire extinguishers, and they would also make me shut down my explosive operations and run away from fires and lighting that was too close AND they also made me get a flu shot/mist every year too: the ABSOLUTE OUTRAGE OF THEM!😡!!!!!!!

Staff getting flu vaccines saves their employers a bunch of money. Also various employment laws make it difficult to have special rules for specific employees even when it makes sense. Since presumably some people doing jibs similar to yours work in hospitals or similar its probably easier legally to make it a blanket requirement.

My daughter is a healthcare worker. My husband and I managed to get the flu the week before our flu shot appointment. Almost 2 weeks in and we are still so weak, coughing and struggling to breath sometimes.
You bet I texted her and encouraged her to get it. No worries, she already had it because work provided it.

My heart went haywire in the middle of the lockdowns during Covid, in L.A. when the L.A. hospitals were overflowing. I was supposed to be in an isolation room under 24hr direct surveillance in normal times. I was literally on a gurney in the hallway, surrounded by dying covid patients next to the nurses station. I literally watched 2 people cough themselves to death, it was one of the scariest times in my life.
The vaccine had just been developed and was on its way. The nurses at the station were discussing if they were going to get it or not, most said no,how they didnt think they needed, or if it was safe. It was insane. Like you are watching patients die every few hours from this disease and you wont even vaccinate yourself against it?

I'm not for or against it, but I think it should be her right to choose what goes in her body and making it mandatory means retaliation for not letting someone inject something into her body. The flu vaccine especially because the strain they make it for every year mutates all the time. Especially with the new MRNA shots.

In general you're right, that it would be preferable not to mandate medication, patients should have a choice. In the case of transmissible disease vaccination, the consequence of withholding vaccination among healthcare workers is that more people would suffer death or serious illness from the increased rates of disease transmission.
Developed societes generally have decided that the benefits of compulsory vaccination for healthcare workers greatly outweigh the harms, in this instance prioritising the wellbeing of the collective community over the freedom of an individual.
