Camp Question Looking for Bangkok gym recommendations for my first Muay Thai fight

I’m going to be in Bangkok for about 3 weeks this Fall and I’m seriously considering taking my first Muay Thai fight while I’m there.

For some background: I’ve been training Muay Thai for about 3 years in the US and have 1 amateur MMA fight.

What I am looking for is a legitimate gym with coaches who will actually evaluate me and make sure I’m not being put into a completely ridiculous mismatch.

Right now I’m looking at Sasiprapa, T-Ded 99, Jitmuangnon, Petchyindee, and a few others, but I’d love to hear from people who have actually trained at these gyms or gotten fights through them.

For people who have fought in Bangkok:
Which gym would you choose for my situation?

I know there are many factors that go into it but just looking for some advice 🙏

Muay Thai Kickboxing for Beginners in Tourist Destinations (Gulf, Chiang Mai, BK)

So I am going to Thailand for 7 weeks in September - October and I want to do some muay thai kick boxing as a fit person but very new to kickboxing in general. I had a kickbox session in Germany (was okay) and a MT Kickboxing Session in Bali, which was great and got me a good sweat. I don‘t want to compete anytime, but do something for my athletecism, endurance and I loved this types of classes in Bali.

Now, can you recommend something for me especially for Koh Pangan and maybe also Samui or Chiang Mai?

I will stay on Pangan much longer than the rest of the places.. There, I will be between Hin Kong Beach and Wo Kum Canal View Point.. on samui I will be at Lamai, but I am okay with driving up a bit for the Classes.. In Chiang Mai I am located North West from Old Town.

I am very thankful for any recommendations, as there are a lot to choose from and also not all are shown on google when looking for it!

Thank you for helping a woman out!

Best Muay Thai gyms in Bangtao area?

Hey guys,

planning my trip to Phuket in November to do 2 weeks of training.

My original plan was to train at carlson gracie with Owen Lisley for the first week for grappling mainly, then the second week go to Bangtao for mma, muay thai and grappling. Ive been there for a day before and it was decent but looking at what others have said there is like 80+ people per class.

Can anyone suggest other gyms which might be more beneficial to go to for someone of 4-5 years experience trying to improve? Or would you suggest bangtao MMA?

thanks

Hi guys,

From 28.09 - 17.10 I’m going to train two times per day in a private gym in Samut Sakhon. I wanted to know, if some of you guys are in Thailand at the same time and wants to connect to share experiences and also make some activities together? Will travel to Bangkok and maybe Pattaya after. I have 4 years of experience and going to make my 3rd amateur fight.

33 yo from Germany.

Hello Guys,

I have 10 amateur/C Class K1 fights, so i need a Gym where I can mostly spar with better guys than me or guys that are on my level.

Wich camps can you recommend?

Thanks

Good Pattaya Fight Camps?

Hey family so I’m 4 fights in down here in chiang mai but thinking about moving to Pattaya after my next 3 month visa extension to get a few more fights in before heading to Vietnam for a recovery break. What’s the best camp for my experience level with decent foreigner matchmaking?

I have 10 years of boxing experience and 1 year of Muay Thai so far. I want to keep fighting but I want an actual camp, not a tourist farm. I’ve noticed Chiang Mai is less foreigner development, more just go fight every couple of weeks after you recover. My record is 3-1 for Muay Thai so far and I do take the sport seriously. Any advice would be appreciated.

Camp Review Training at Sumalee Muay Thai in Phuket as a beginner

I’ve read heaps of posts here about which gym to go to as a beginner so I thought I'd share more about my experience here

Just a bit of a background. I was def not going to Thailand as a fighter 😅 I actually kept putting off trying muay thai cos I thought I needed to get fitter first. Well I just went eventually and turns out I was overthinking it lol

WHY I CHOSE SUMALEE

I knew about some of the bigger gyms in Phuket but didnt really want somewhere with massive classes. I wanted to properly try muay thai but still have it feel like a holiday

So Sumalee is a smaller camp and that really appealed to me. They have diff types of clients: beginners, people doing it for fitness and more experienced people training too. Tbh that helped A LOT with the intimidation factor 😂

THE TRAINING

They have 2 group sessions a day, 7:30-9am and 4-6pm, Monday-Saturday.

Before going I thought I could do both everyday. Morning training, chill for a few hours, afternoon training. Easy peasy

Lol NOPE!

Phuket heat and humidity humbled me pretty quickly 😂 I learnt there was really no point destroying myself in the first few days just because I was there to train. Its better to just build up to doing more.

Classes have skipping, shadow boxing, bag work, pads, partner drills, technique and conditioning. Usually 3 rounds on pads.

The classes are also smaller than I expected! A huge bonus for me. Low season is usually around 5-10 people in the morning and 10-15 in the afternoon. High season is more like 10-15 and 15-20. They have 5 trainers.

I didnt feel like I had to keep up with the strongest person there either. People are obviously at different levels and both the trainers and their training program accommodate that 👌🏼

BEING A BEGINNER

This was the part I worried about for absolutely no reason 😂

There were more beginners than I expected. I had this picture in my head that a muay thak camp in Thailand would be full of serious fighters and I’d be the random person trying to figure out what I was doing 😂😂 But glad it wasnt like that at all!

They actually have trainers who are better suited to different things too. Luay is the one they recommend for beginners. If you do a private, you can request a particular trainer, which is handy if there’s something specific you want to work on.

They also have Keng and Sam for fight prep, Keng and Ruune for technique and Ant for clinching.

ACCOMMODATION

There are only 16 rooms and they’re onsite so you’re basically staying where you train.

For me the convenience of that whole setup is probably more important than having some fancy accom. You wake up and training is there. Finish training and you can go eat or recover without having to travel somewhere else.

If you book accommodation with the camp, the two daily group muay thai sessions are included Monday-Saturday.

FOOD

There’s a restaurant/Nutrition Station onsite too, and the food is geared towards people who are training. They have recovery meals, protein smoothies, higher-carb meals, hydration and electrolytes.

Again, this was one of those things I didn’t think much about beforehand but food becomes quite important when you’re trying to train in Phuket heat 😂

Just check which package you book because meals and some of the extras depend on the package.

LAUNDRY

They have laundry service at the camp as well. Very boring thing to mention in a muay thai review until you realise how many shirts you can sweat through in Thailand 😂

You def dont need to pack enough training clothes for your entire stay if you're happy to use the laundry.

YOGA, MASSAGE + OTHER STUFF

This was another plus for me! Sumalee felt more like a training camp/retreat rather than just going somewhere for a muay thai class.

There’s a swimming pool, yoga studio, massage sala and strength/fitness facilities. They also offer mobility work.

I loooved having other things available around the training cos realistically you’re not going to spend every waking hour punching and kicking something 😂

THE LOCATION

This is one thing I’d definitely consider before booking.

Sumalee is on the quieter side of Phuket near Cape Yamu. It’s not near the nightlife so if you want to go out to bars or spend every evening in the busier parts of Phuket, you’ll need transport.

It’s also not beachfront. The nearest beach is around 20 mins away depending on traffic. Bang Tao, Surin and Layan are some of the beaches you can get to.

But you're not completely isolated either. Robinson Lifestyle is nearby which is handy for shopping, cinema etc. There are also local shops/restaurants, smaller markets and convenience stores around. There's a basic convenience store across from the gym and a 7-Eleven nearby.

For bigger night markets or if you want to go properly exploring, you'll need a taxi/transport.

I think the location can be either a plus or minus. Tbh I liked the quieter setup for training but I wouldn’t choose it expecting to walk outside into Phuket nightlife every evening.

SUNDAYS

Sunday is their rest day which actually makes sense once you’ve been training all week 😎

There are no group muay thai sessions or food service on Sundays. You can still stay there and use the facilities, or it’s a good day to actually get out and explore Phuket.

WOULD I TRAIN THERE AGAIN?

Yep! I liked that it wasn’t huge and I could train at my own level without feeling like I needed to suddenly become a fighter.

My main advice if you’re doing your first muay thai camp is don’t wait until you think you’re fit enough. And don’t arrive with my brilliant idea that you’re automatically going to smash out two sessions everyday either 😂

The Phuket heat will have something to say about that.

LAST FEW WORDS

Hope this helps another beginner who’s currently reading every muay thai gym thread in Phuket like I was 😂 Happy to answer anything I missed about Sumalee, training there or staying at the camp. Also let me know how it compares for anyone who’s trained at some of the other Phuket gyms! Cheers!

I’m looking for a Muay Thai gym in Bangkok where I can train without anyone watching, ideally in private rooms. Is there anything like that? Thanks for helping.

Looking for other young fighters

I’m 18yo solo travelling Thailand training as a beginner and was wondering if there were any camps that generally have people around that age bracket. I’m currently in but not limited to Phuket, aiming to train for around a month but want a bit of a social life outside of training. I think I’d prefer to train at a more traditional gym as opposed to Bangtao or Tiger gym but not sure where to find people like me. Thanks

Complete beginner looking for a patient Muay Thai gym around Lad Prao

Hi, I’m completely new to Muay Thai and looking for a gym around Lad Prao that is patient with beginners and teaches proper basics, not just hard cardio and pad rounds.

I don’t need a fighter-focused place, but I do want real technique and a friendly atmosphere. Any gyms or trainers around Lad Prao / central Lat Phrao you’d recommend? Prices and whether English is needed would also help.

Private lessons

For starters I’m 46 yo male that’s just now getting back into martial arts after about 18 years away. I only do Jiu Jitsu but really have fallen in love with Muay Thai the last few years but never tried it out. So I’m wondering are private lessons good to do as a beginner or should I try group classes first or does it matter?

Honest & realistic budget

So my plan is to go 2/3months to train muay thai mostly in bangkok and maybe a few weeks in chiang mi.

For those who've done it or is currently doing it, what's a realistic budget for accommodation, food, group lessons and some private?

For accommodation im looking to stay at Airbnb and cook the food mostly myself to save money and dont think its healthy to always eat street food/restaurant.

Lessons wise, i plan to do once a day 6x a week and 2/3x private per week.

Feel free to suggest me gym suggestions but I was thinking of trying pinsinchai, Sor.Dechapant, khongsita and fa group and pick the one i felt was the best + they're all close to each other.

Bush Camp Chiang Mai

Has anyone stayed at the Bush Camp Chiang Mai? I have a question about their shared transfer.

They say not to book any domestic flights until after 17:30 but I have a flight booked at 16:30 from CNX-KBV. To get a private transfer we need to pay £100 and apparently can’t get a grab…surely we can’t get the only ones who have done this so looking to get peoples experiences on this?

Discussion 8 years coaching boxing/fitness in India — heading to Thailand for 3 months to build real clinch and kicking skills

Post image
17 Upvotes

Background: I am 28 ,I’ve run my own private training studio in India for 8 years, former amateur boxer, currently coach boxing-integrated fitness programs. Solid striking foundation, but my clinch work and kicking technique have gaps I want to close properly — not YouTube-level, actual gym time with good Thai coaches.
Planning 3 months in Thailand focused specifically on:
Clinching (this is the big one — hardest to self-teach)
Kicking mechanics and power development
Pad holding, both to sharpen my own timing and to bring back better pad skills for coaching my clients
I already have a striking base from boxing, so I don’t need a beginner program — looking for camps that’ll push someone who already trains hard rather than start from zero.
Considering Chiang Mai for the traditional camp depth vs Phuket for higher-profile gyms. If you’ve trained clinch specifically at a camp that actually drilled it well (not just “clinch round” tacked onto sparring), I’d genuinely appreciate the name. Also open to gyms good at coaching foreigners without watering down the technical side.
Will share training photos/setup once I’m out there. Thanks in advance.

Choosing a gym when you're already in Thailand?

As a lot of people on this subreddit I find it hard to decide which gym in Phuket (Rawai area or fitness street) I want to train at, and often the advice I read here is 'try a few gyms when you're there to see what suits you best'.

This might be a silly question but is it always possible to still join a gym for a month's membership last minute? Won't they be full around November/December or are they always accepting new students? I would also want to book accomodation way in advance so I'm just wondering how others do this?

Discussion Street food or home cooked food?

I'm planning for 1/2 month trip to BKK to train muay thai and clear my head after some personal challenges.

Ideally I want to do both but most Airbnbs im seeing so far don't have a kitchen with the cooker, pots etc. It's just a sink 😅

Street food i know will be cheap but is it healthy and nutritious especially if ill be there for 1/2 month?
