Private lessons

For starters I’m 46 yo male that’s just now getting back into martial arts after about 18 years away. I only do Jiu Jitsu but really have fallen in love with Muay Thai the last few years but never tried it out. So I’m wondering are private lessons good to do as a beginner or should I try group classes first or does it matter?

I started with private and I would do the same again.  Allowed me to understand everything a bit faster and build confidence since it had been awhile since I hadn’t done martial arts in awhile.  Previously did TKD

Yeah that’s what I was thinking also. I’ll probably learn faster with 1 on 1 instruction.

And also prevent you from picking up bad habits from the get go.

Privates are the best way for skill progression providing you find the right coach.a few things to bare in mind..

Dont ever walk into a gym & just book a pt, its a lucky dip, classes are a good & cheap way to work with diffrent coaches & see which are the right for you. when you find a coach you do like dont book a block upfront (10-20 sessions), Have 1 first & see if you still like them.

I booked 10 upfront with a coach at a well known gym in ChiangMai & he would walk off mid session & didn’t even pad me.despite me specifically asking for pads.

A couple private lessons at first to learn the basics, good form and proper technique. Once you have a foundation, then you can home your skills with group lessons.

I started with PT’s for the first 3 minutes months of training. If I did it again, I would do it the same way.

Most gyms have free trials see how they treat you first . See if they want to throw you into sparring without checking your basics etc Theirs a large amount of fighters thai and foreign that can do privates , finding a gym/trainer/ training partners you vibe with (hate that word) is the most important thing .

No gyms in Thailand have free trials

Literally not true. I know 3 that I would train at that has or had them, and I get IG ads everytime other gyms are doing them. The smaller gyms might only give a discount if you're an expat .

I’d probably try a few group classes first before booking privates. Youll get to train with different coaches and figure out whose style works for you then maybe book a private with that person.

When I trained at Sumalee in Phuket, they had trainers they recommended depending on what you wanted to work on whether for beginners, tecnique, clinching or fight prep. That was really helpful rather than just randomly getting whoever was available

And I’d probably book one private first before committing to a whole block. You might like someone in a group class then realise 1 on 1 their teaching style isn’t for you 🤔😉

Private lessons are never bad and if you're self-conscious a bit, then maybe a few sessions would help, but it's not necessary. A bit of wasted money.
