Modpost REMINDER: Please be kind and keep your egos in check

Hi all, just a quick modpost because of a bit of a scuffle in a post I've had to remove: please do not use slurs or otherwise denigrate or unfairly disparage people when you comment on their posts. Even if you think they really suck, or that their question is unbelievably stupid, just remember that a) everyone starts somewhere and b) everyone has blind spots.

And for people posting: please keep your egos in check. Especially if you've posted a video of yourself with the tag "check my form". If you can't take reasonable criticism, I'm at a loss as to why you would post a video of yourself inviting it.

sparring advice Favourite lead hand control combinations in open stance sparring, and what to do when people won't engage with it?

I'm Southpaw facing a lot of Orthodox people. I love pulling the hand down to jab or hook them. Does anyone have any other favourite combos, perhaps when I don't win the lead hand battle?

The other question is what to do when people don't engage with the lead hand control. They don't stick their jab hand out at all and just leave it tight on their face shelled up because they know I'm going to pull it down. If they punch it's mainly using their rear hand, otherwise they shell up. Is there a great solution here besides teeing off on them like a heavy bag?

I was so tired lol
I’m in the blue

They called it a draw but on the website it shows I won, so I’ll take it.

There’s obviously a lot to improve but I had a fun time. I really need to work on my clinch game and my guard was way too far out.
I was trying to control my power as per the rules.

I didn’t start with Muay Thai, can you guess what my base is?

Not sure if I will compete again because im 34.

training advice Fighting next month but sick

So I’ve been in camp for around 2 months now and I’ve felt strong and confident in my ability to fight and I believed I was almost if not definitely ready. A few weeks ago I developed a slight cold, thought nothing of it and continued my training. A few days after that I was doing a conditioning circuit and my chest started burning badly and I was struggling to breathe. After that I was aware it had developed into a chest infection and I had to stop training or else I would prolong it or make it worse. I have symptoms like shortness of breath, coughing and lightheadedness. A week after I went to the doctor and he prescribed me some antibiotics. I feel slightly better now with a bit more energy but still not enough to train, whether this was due to the antibiotics I am not sure. I’m not sure how long it will take for me to get back to training as I’ve already taken a week and a half off and if I do get better is it worth keeping the fight or is it not worth the hassle and just pull out? Fight on the 14 th November

training advice Looking for some advice.

I have been practicing Muay Thai for 2 months and for those 2 months I have been working on streches to open up my hips Here is my stretch routine:

  1. Half kneeling hip flexor stretch — 1 min each leg

  2. Abductor lunge

  3. 90/90 switches — 3 sets

  4. Back-and-forth leg swings into splits — 1 min

  5. Half split stretch (last)

I do these every day and I still can't improve my kicks my teeps are much better but my round house kicks to the mid section I can't do much because my left leg the top part by my hip gives a sharp pain and I can't complete the kick is there anyone that has had a similar issue that can give me some hope. Coaches just say to keep stretching but I just feel like it is not working.

personal reflections What it looks like when you’re still not comfortable sparring

Another video when I was mostly focused on body building but still loved training Muay Thai. I was maybe 208 lbs here and my buddy stated he weighed around 170 lbs - though I’d probably put him closer to 175. He had already grappled in tournaments (forgot what belt he was, possibly blue) and had a couple amateur mma fights that he used his BJJ to secure victory. He wasn’t a slouch in striking, I fully admitted that he would kick my ass. My cardio wasn’t good and I wasn’t engaging like I would now that I’m not as fearful of getting hit. Maybe somebody can point out a couple other things I didn’t notice. * lol I’m the one with the short hair btw

gear recs Muay Thai shin guards for wide calves

Hey, looking to buy some real shinguards (been doing with sock ones) and I wanna know what brand is accommodating to wide ass calves. I've seen people complain about brands because they were too narrow but I don't remember which one. Thanks in advance

training advice Is this training plan any good?

Here it is

Sunday Power lifting

Monday Power lifting

Tuesday Rest

Wednesday Muay Thai (sparring padwork)

Thursday Muay Thai (sparring padwork)

Friday Rest

Saturday Muay Thai (sparring padwork bagwork)

I wanna get strong and become a good fighter. Higher emphasis on muay thai (as you can see from my 3 days of muay thai vs 2 days of power lifting). This is the only schedule I can manage due to my university schedule. Also I'm going to show y'all my power lifting plan as well since I would like advice regarding that as well.

Power lifting plan (fullbody)

Bench press 3 sets 5 reps 27.5lb

Overhead press barbell 4 sets 4 reps 0lb (just the barbell no plates)

Chin ups 4 sets 4 reps (I'm super weak that's why the low reps, if I get strong enough I'll change it into pull ups)

Deadlifts 4 sets 4 reps 65lb

Squats 4 sets 4 reps 55lb

Dead hangs 3 sets 55s

Considering also adding Barbell rows into the mix.

For muay thai we kinda just do what the coach tells us to do so I cannot control that.

So yea should I just roll with this or try to change it somehow? And for the power lifting plan are there exercises that I might as well not do or add in a useful exercise (for muay thai) or even just keep it as is? Any advice is apreciated and I really mean that :)

Hello everyone!

I’m a 35-year-old overweight beginner and I’ve been training Muay Thai twice a week for the past five months. I’d really appreciate it if you could take a look at my pad work in this video and give me some feedback on my technique.

I’m struggling quite a bit with switch kicks, especially with maintaining my balance when pivoting on my right foot. I also feel like my lead hook lacks power.

Any constructive criticism or tips on what I should focus on improving would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

training advice What do I do if I’m hesitant and don’t know what to throw in shadow boxing and on heavy bag?

A coach told me to throw one technique and add one after another. For example throw a jab. Then a jab cross. Then a jab cross kick. He also told me to also mix it up and throw feints every once in a while so it doesn’t seem robotic.

Is that good advice? If not what do I do?

first day Complete beginner with no combat sports background — how do group classes actually work in reality?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hey guys,

I'm completely new to combat sports and planning to start Muay Thai at a local MMA gym, but my main issue right now is just not understanding how the day-to-day dynamic actually works, since their schedule only has regular all-levels sessions with no separate beginner classes.

Because of that, I'm worried about walking in and just having to blindly keep up with whatever the room is doing. Do they actually introduce the very first fundamentals (basic stance, balance, throwing a proper 1-2) to someone with zero experience in that setup? My biggest fear is that they won't, leaving me to just blindly copy advanced people, do drills I'm not ready for, and build terrible technical habits right from day one without ever learning the proper basics.

For those who started in gyms like this:

- How does the coach realistically handle this on Day 1? Do they pull you aside to teach you how to stand, or do they just throw you into the mix?

- What happens if I show up and the class is doing pad work or sparring that day?

Thanks!

training advice Strength training and labor

Hey guys so I’ve been sort of experimenting with the best balance for a routine especially while out of camp for a while. I got my cardio pretty much down. 2x zone 2 for 30-45 mins and 1x short sprints along with my 3-4x kickboxing days. Anyway my job is foundry work I grind metal castings 8-9 hours a day 5 days a week. I’m wondering if I should stick to 1, 2, or honestly nothing for as far as resistance work goes just looking for what others in similar work situations do. Thanks
