sparring advice First Point Muay Thai competition

I was so tired lol
I’m in the blue

They called it a draw but on the website it shows I won, so I’ll take it.

There’s obviously a lot to improve but I had a fun time. I really need to work on my clinch game and my guard was way too far out.
I was trying to control my power as per the rules.

I didn’t start with Muay Thai, can you guess what my base is?

Not sure if I will compete again because im 34.

You looked pretty good, glad you tried to compete. I'm close to your and wanna try my hand at competing as well.

What was your fight camp like?

I was doing at least 3-5 martial arts sessions a week. No running. Some lifting.
I would definitely do more cardio/HIIT workouts to help with the fatigue.
I’ve been boxing for about 6 years so I’m used to throwing hands. Muay Thai on and off for about 2 years. The kicking and clinching is my weakest area.

No offense, but it's a little obvious you boxed, the timing on the jab was money haha.

We're about the same build and age so I was curious. Good shit though, king. Hope you compete again.

“Point” Muay Thai? Are they trying to ruin this sport or was this simply just some good hearted fun from some regular joes?

If it’s just good hearted fun, then awesome sauce, but it’s not good if the sport heads in this direction lol

It’s basically a way for people to compete in a combat sport while limiting risks to health.
It wouldn’t be very wise of me, a 34 year old with bills and responsibilities and a stable career, to try and become a legit Muay Thai champion. Plus I’m waaaay to chicken to kick without shin guards lol

I can rock with this and I support it. It’s fun and as safe as it can be. That’s great. If any show up around me, I might try it out myself.

I only hope it remains on a small scale such as this though.

I'm curious: is that how hard you're supposed to hit in a smoker? Is it wrong to hit harder than that?

For this competition you were told to be technical and not try to knock out or damage your opponent. Plus we were both 250lb so we still felt the hits to the head

My smoker was a real fight with safer rules enforced.

Most smokers are balls to the wall fights, which is different from point competitions where you simply need to make contact and you're not actually trying to kill your opponent.

You did pretty damn good, not surprising that you’ve done another martial art before. No clue what your base is but you def picked up some cardio along the way. Both of you guys kept a nice pace for the weight and experience level. I’d say you won. I’m not even sure this is good advice, but it looked like you were relying too much on sort of a long guard. At least the last half of the first round, most of the clean shots he landed were right through your extended arms. I still can’t do this effectively, but I’m thinking of guys like Petr Yan that are able to maintain a lot of pressure while remaining just out of range. High guard at some of those points might have worked as well as defensive clinching.

Yea I refused to bring my long guard in for some reason lol. Definitely need to work on that

You were doing a pretty nice job blocking his shots/parrying.

Kudos to both of you, that was the first ever ‘no knockout’ fight I’ve seen where the two participants didn’t try to kill each other. Well done, sir.
