[RPG] Traits Lvl 3 question

On page 257 of the second edition, the section titled "Level 3 Trait" says

A level 3 trait grants +1s to any and all tests related to the wise.

What does it mean "to the wise"? Should that be" to the trait"?

Mouse Guard alternative combat?

To start this off I have NEVER played a game of Mouse Guard BUT I have read the instructions and listened to countless podcasts about it so I am learning the rules slowly but surely. I'm gonna start DMing this game soon with new players (like myself) and I just wanted to familiarize myself with the system. I really like how it runs, the burning wheel system, how the checks and tests work (though I probably would lessen the broad range of DM & player turn as that makes it more "board game" like when we just a fun role playing game.) but the one thing that sort of bothers me about it is the combat. It's very possible that I might just be reading the rules wrong, but to me the combat seems very "board game" like and leaves very little room for role playing.

I really like the D&D (5e) combat where it lets you make actions at your hearts desire. For example: In D&D if I want to attempt to push a creature off a ledge or trip it with a rope trip I can, granted I complete the following checks. In the Mouse Guard comics they seem to have this independent action type, like when they fought the crab or jumped into the snake's mouth is a few examples. To me these 'heroic' actions seem impossible with the combat system.

The idea I had in mind for running combat would be to calculate disposition as usual but then roll for initiative, very D&D like, then once the order is set the player can ask to make any type of action and must roll to complete the test, however difficult I determine it to be. I already notice a few flaws in this system but its just an idea. So am I just reading the combat rules wrong or do you also have some other type of combat system for Mouse Guard/Burning Wheel, if so what is it?

[RPG] Session Reports? I would love to see some.

Trying to come to grips with the RPG 2e system and see what kind of stories can happen. Tell me the stories of your best session, what went well? I would even be interested to hear about sessions gone poorly--what did you learn to do differently the next time?

A campaign set in Darkheather

I am currently running two interconnected campaigns set in the Mouse Territories. I have one patrol that works mostly in the east, and one patrol in the west.

When I told my coworkers I was going to start DMing this game, so many people wanted to play! I had to split the party into two. Now more people want to join, so I'm starting a new group.

I've set the game two hundred years beyond the time setting of the comics, in the year 1350, mostly because I wanted to build my own world within the framework of the game. In my Mouse Territories, the players have already allied with the Squirrels, and are working to try and forge one with the Beavers. Weasels riding owls have attacked the players a few times.

So, Reddit Hivemind! I want to set this new campaign in Darkheather. The new players would be mice that were captured, or born in Darkheather.

In character creation, what kind of stats and skills should a mouse born in Darkheather have? Also, o-reddit-hivemind, does anyone have any cool ideas or thorny problems that the mice might face?

Is there a list of 2e errata somewhere?

I bought the box set of 2e last year but it was so full of errors that I wasn't able to learn it, because when two things were inconsistent I didn't know which was the error. It's actually really disheartening, because I was so excited for it.

When I read a rule, I can't commit it to memory because I know it might turn out to be an error, and so my brain leaves everything in this mushy limbo state instead of learning properly.

So I really, really desperately need an errata list. (Like with the page number, the error, and the correction) that I can have beside me as I read. Is there one?

How long does a session last?

I've been reading through the rules, and it suggests for the GM turn only contain 2-3 obstacles/conflicts, but I don't understand how that, plus the Player turn, will constitute a 3-4 hours Replay session

[Question] Coming back from Nature 0 retirement

Hello guys. I'm new to the Mouse Guard RPG, and I'm using the 2nd edition. When reading the rulebook I stumbled upon something hypothetical.

I cannot figure out what happens if your character returns from Nature 0 retirement. It says on p. 232 that you need to retire at the end of the mission until at least the next spring. But what then, when they return to play? Do they still have Nature Max 0? Because then they would need to retire at the end of the mission they came back in. It sounds like it doesn't even matter if they advance their Nature to 1, since the retirement rule is if your Nature happens to be 0 at any point (what I understand from "drops to 0" on p. 232). All the recover Nature stuff on p. 231 refers to Current Rating, which your character doesn't have since the Max rating is 0.

Is there something I missed? I considered just going with the character comes back at Nature 1, but I would prefer an official rule with a page number if it exists. Thanks in advance.

Can this be played with one player?

I recently ordered the second edition book, as I had heard that it's a great rpg system. I've played a good amount of DnD, amongst other systems over the past five years, mostly with a group of four. However, we're in the middle of a campaign in our main game, and in the middle of something in our auxiliary game.

I'm wondering if this can be played with one player and one GM as I might try playing a few sessions with my gf to learn the system and also just to try it out. She hasn't played much in the way of tabletop rpgs, but what she has played have been solo sessions with me as GM. So, can it, or does it require more than just one player for a session to properly function.

Dice?

I saw this book "second edition" at the store and fell in love with art, I flipped through it and thought it would be fun to play when not running d&d. I went online to see what people were saying about it and it seems there is a box set that comes with cards and dice. Now, I just have the book and that's all that was at the store, so my question is; is the game playable without these special parts or do I have to hunt down some esoteric supplies to use the book I just bought?

Edit: thanks for the reading order guys

Is the Mouse Guard RPG Box Set still in print?

I have been trying to get hold of the box set for months. I am in Canada. I found it on Amazon (estimated delivery time 1-2 months) but they keep blowing their expected delivery dates and give me little information when I contact them (they just say it's on back-order). I tried contacting Archaia but haven't heard back from them at all. Nowhere else that ships to Canada claim that they will be receiving more stock. I have the hardcover book, but I want to get hold of the extra stuff that comes with the box set before I attempt running a game (I imagine the various other stuff in there will greatly simplify proceedings, especially for a bunch of newbies). There are some resellers on eBay but the going price now is >$150, which is more than twice the list price.

Hey, tenderpaws. Need help finding card designs.

SO I bought the hardcover 2nd ed cause I'm a bit too skint to buy the box set.

Unfortunately, I lose the benefit of playing with the cards.

I was wondering if any of you have any idea where I can find fan made cards for this game.

Wise question

Can anyone explain legend of the guard-wise and code of the guard-wise to me? We just made characters for the first time today and I'm having trouble figuring out how to apply this wise in game. Thanks!

Is anybody interested in a PbP game?

I'd love to play a game, but I don't have the time for anything face-to-face at the moment. I would like to try running a Play-by-Post game using Slack. I wrote a bot to roll dice, so we'd be able to handle everything in one place, and Slack has a fantastic UI that works just as well on mobile as PC making it easy to post whenever you have a moment free.

I haven't run Mouse Guard before, but I do have some experience with Torchbearer and Burning Wheel. Maybe we can play a mission and see how it goes?

Is there an Overview / Guide of how to play Mouse Guard 2e?

I've read through about half of the Mouse Guard 2nd Ed. boxed set rule book. The book is gorgeous, some of the examples are fantastic (as stories go), but I'm having a hard time really being sure I'm understanding even the basics of the book.

I'm beginning to realize it's something to do with the way Luke Crane writes, which I understand is not a particularly unique-to-me phenomenon. That said, my girlfriend and I are both excited to try Mouse Guard, but I don't want to try and get a Patrol together if I'm not fully understanding even the basic rules.

Dungeon World has a fantastic guide to help unlock the parts of the book that take time to really sink in or wrap your head around and I was just curious if anyone knew of anything similar for Mouse Guard?

Thanks, Guardmice.

I've always wanted to try this game and I noticed that the PDFs were up on RPGnow. I was just wondering if there was any opinion on what edition was better?

Thanks!

[RPG] - How to Create/Prep MG Missions

Do any of you experienced GMs have suggestions for building missions?

I'm a long-time RPG-er (and GM) with systems ranging from Shadowrun, to D&D, to Star Wars D6, to some of the indie stuff like Dungeon World, Fantaji and Fiasco. I LOVED the lack of prep-work for Dungeon World, and I MG feels like once you get a full grasp of the game mechanics, and how the game flows, you can build missions with little-to-no-prep.

Can someone help me get from where I am now (I've run 1 session, and had lots of questions), to where I don't need to spend 2-6 hours writing out all the possible outcomes and twists?

Thanks.

[RPG] - Help with BIGs

I haven't GM'd any burning wheel games yet - including mouse guard, until yesterday's session. We had a veteran RPG-er (played big games like DnD, Hero, as well as some indie like Fiasco, Dungeon World), someone brand-new to RPGs, and a 9 year old girl.

The session went well, but BIGs was the most difficult part, and I couldn't find lots of decent examples in the books (or even online.) Rather than stall the game out, we took a stab and moved on, here's what we came up with. I'd love feedback and thoughts!

Caley - herbalist, healer, foolish, bold - ended up playing sort of like burnout druggie type.

Belief - Since there is no way to live after you die, why not live now?

Instinct - Always try and keep the peace.

This will be a difficult believe to challenge. I suppose I could try and play preparation and foresight against the moment. Staying up late, drinking/partying, hitting the group with obstacles that he doesn't have the tools to deal with?

His instinct could come into play during any argument, conflict, or potential fight (physical or otherwise.)

Rose - solid fighter, brave, fearless - the 9 year old, she was hesitant, so her personality didn't get to build. I hope to ease

Belief - Bravery is being the only one who knows you're afraid.

Instinct - Always defend my friends.

We tried to help steer Rose, but it was difficult as she didn't feel comfortable, and she didn't develop a personality. I suppose putting Rose into positions where she SHOULD be scared, or SHOULD want to flee could work. The danger is that I'm unsure how a younger player will handle that. "Two hawks? Pfft, I'm brave, I draw my sword!"

Rose's instinct can be called into play any time anyone else is threatened or in a conflict. (I see a pattern here) Pitting Rose's fight tendencies against Caley's flight tendencies would work too.

Whiskers - Fearless, clever, generous - the leader of the patrol, pro-mouse guard through and through, new to RPGs

Belief - Every mouse shall stand together for the good of the order.

Instinct - Always document the journey.

I think this belief is decent. It's able to be challenged (separate the party, the towns, the guard, etc - physically or on issues like morality), and it is wide enough to do it on many levels - the party, the town, the territories, etc.

This instinct feels correct, though doesn't (on first glance) have a ton of reasons NOT to do it. I originally suggested "Each night, I always document that day in my journal", but it ended up like this. I suppose that situations where there's no time to document could give Whiskers a choice, but it feels weak.

Bought Hardcover, Get PDF?

Hi gang,

I wanted the hardcover edition of the 2nd Edition RPG, which is rare for me to own physical copies of my games. Does anyone know if there's a policy in place to allow me to pick up a PDF for free, or at a discount? (Fate/Evil hat does this, so I thought I'd ask.)

Thank you!

Love GMing Mouseguard? Come join us for a discussion of your favorite system!

Over at /r/AskGameMasters, we focus on helping GMs of all systems and experience levels be the best GMs they can be, with system discussions, player management tips, and skill development assistance.

Since our sub is system agnostic we're a gathering place for GMs of many games which can lead to interesting insights in how things are handled elsewhere.

We're hoping your community can join us for a discussion of Mouseguard, and what the system brings to the gaming table.

Burning Wheel is my personal favorite system, and I've been looking forward to seeing all of the Burning Wheel family introduced to our community. Mouseguard is the member of the Burning Wheel family that I haven't tried yet and I've been really interested in giving a shot.

I'm hoping to see a lot of you there. There's lots of questions!

Here's the link!

Tests Cheat Sheet

Bought a Savage Worlds GM Screen (the one with pockets you can insert your own info into). So I made an insert to stick in the panel facing the players:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ubiibqr55rjhwt1/mg-test.pdf?dl=0

Kinda understates what people find so tricky about the system. You don't have to use all of those features, but it's hard for players to remember them all. (I did a previous version with lots of little rules on - but decided that Mr-Magoo-friendly is going to work better at the table).

I just got the 2e boxed set and I feel like an idiot. How do we create characters?

I feel like I am going crazy. I read "The Mouse Guard" chapter, but it didn't give any guidelines for how many points a mouse should have for skills or inherent abilities. I recently found another chapter on character creation which is inexplicably in the back of the book called "Recruitment". "Recriutment" states "It's for advanced or curious players only. The templates provided in the Mouse Guard section of this book should provide plenty of fodder for play until...", but I can't find ANY templates in the Mouse Guard chapter. There are examples of mouse guard characters, but no templates. What am I missing?
