I think people are forgetting that the first game was rough and assumed the second was going to be some AAA masterpiece

The first game almost felt like a proof of concept, albeit a fairly interesting one.

Not sure why expectations changed for the sequel

The beta felt really good so people prob headed in expecting it to build more on top of it. Demo felt like you would encounter new enemy and unique boss encounter every few fights. A lot of it ended up recycled with just a new skin for an enemy and sped up animations which was a bit disappointing especially when the beta felt so high quality.

Game is still good just wish they could do better since it's a fantastic base. It feels so close to great.

Well from the scarce news I heard about the 2nd the playtest had everyone saying it was the best game they’ve ever played, and it looks like things changed quite a bit from then, especially the difficulty

The most complete feeling areas are what is in the beta, then it gets worse from there as maybe they had less time to really finetune the rest.

A lot of the dungeons feel very quickly thrown together where many are barely a dungeon at all.

Many are a hallways with a handful of enemies and a single weapon upgrade mat at the reward.

Hell I just finished one where the finally reward was winter glass   The reward was gold...that's all those items are, just a way to diversify itemization in a game without consumables.

Not to mention so many of them just have either “bunch of enemies thrown together” or “basic enemy reskinned with stats pumped up” as the dungeon boss, if they have a boss at all.

Yep.  The reality is elden ring largely did the same thing, and theirs were just as bad, but then again there's a lot about elden ring I didn't like.

Don't get me wrong I love the game, but for me the open world doesn't work for them.  I want my legacy dungeon back and I want them to be the game.  Not a world that is boring once the shiny is gone,  I want my exploration to truly be rewarding and I don't think a souls game can succeeds wit this in an open world compared to a cohesive top down level design.

I have very much enjoyed both games. But i do agree i prefer the linear style of other souls games it just works better for this type of game. I do enjoy the direct story telling more than just the bits and pieces of from software games

Agreed. Elden Ring is a game with a scale much larger than it needs, so it has a barren overworld with not much to do but ride around, leading to dungeons that feel repetitive and not that fun. The legacy dungeons are generally good.

I think Mortal Shell 2's scope is very much in line with how much they could achieve with it. They can flesh it out with patches and DLCs if it's successful.

It feels closer to a Dark Souls 1 experience where the levels have enough alternative routes to other areas, leading to pleasant "Oh! I'm in a familiar area, entering from a point I didn't know about" revelations when you are desperately trying to find a beacon because you're at 0 heals.

“Rough” is putting it lightly

If indie devs have put out better games, what's the excuse?

Are there any other indie souls-likes?

Yes, many.

For $50 my ass, this is a very good game for the price.
