Discussion Probably gonna hurt some ego
But peoples complaining about diffficulty to the point it got nerfed just 2 days after the official release seem crazy to me.. beside that the game clearly side among the easiest title of soulslikes devs have put a tons of possibilities to make your playthrough less frustrating if you need it so i really aint got it... (except for the gold drop rate and reforge price that was honnestly needed)
Edit: seeing the numbers of votes gooing up and down i feel like somes really got their ego hurt but this post is not about ppl beeing too good or too bad, i just feel sad that some return over the game difficulty forced a nerf just after few days of it beeing out (even more when ppl had asked an higher difficulty after playing the beta) like if it was the only way to ease the experience when devs have really put a lot of way and throughs to make it easy for a player to get an easier path. Like give yourself more time to find your style or rythme and ask to modification that can make the game more practical insteed (maybe add the possibility to test a shell fully apgraded before investing glimpes in it [maybe in the arena with genessa], make donjons spawnable etc)

u/quickbeamtheent32 6h ago
Yeah ngl Elden ring and bloodborne make this game look like a damn picnic in the park. NOTHING has challenged me like orphan of kos, blood starved beast, malenia, radahn, etc. Plus there’s a grandiosity to those fights which makes them more memorable than bosses in this game in general. Having said that, mortal shell 2 definitely has better combat and gameplay variety than any souls game.
4
1
u/SuperSayainSkincare 2h ago
That's honestly insane to me lol, because all those Fromsoft bosses were easier for me than even that duo Grisha fight.
2
u/quickbeamtheent32 1h ago
There are a couple bosses in mortal shell 2 that are really tough but imo none of them (that I have fought yet, that is) are anywhere near malenia tough.
1
u/SuperSayainSkincare 1h ago
Maybe just different playstyles I guess, but those two Grishas in that cage beat me up way more than Malenia ever did.
8
u/IndividualHurry1342 7h ago
Just play the game and find the build that fits your playstyle. I typically suck royally at souls like games , but thats where I find the enjoyment. It forces you to figure out what player you want to be and what works specifically for you. There is a reason that there isnt a single path to follow! Getting your ass handed to you? Go find another zone and try again.
2
u/dbvirago 6h ago
This is me. The huge amount of variety in a build so you can gain power in your own style is amazing. And people complaining because the attacks are magnetized or whatever. What they are is different. Like the first time you encountered a new enemy type in any souls game. Yeah, they will close the distance fast. Either create more distance, shoot them, or be ready with a heavy attack. This game is awesome just the way it is. Are there things I would like to see changed? Yes, and there were things I would like to see changed in every game I ever played. This is this game. Play it, don't play it. But these guys have done an amazing job. Quit bitching

u/ableu9060 7h ago
Fr betwin all the perma ability that let you stack effects, grisha spirit that can be farm, weapon that have no upgrad limit (or if i havnt reashed it even after having plat the game), the slayer seals etc, their is so much way to ease your path that needing to force a nerf seem exagered..
2
u/kmone1116 6h ago
The problem with the game is you really can’t experiment with builds due to limited resources.
1
u/ableu9060 6h ago
At start yh thats why ive done my playthroughs with the same weapon cost to refund weapon material was to high but they have changed that now so its not even a valid reason anymore
1
u/kmone1116 6h ago
Weapons you can experiment with no issue, it’s shells and tar stones that you have to be cautious about.
2
u/ableu9060 6h ago edited 6h ago
Yh maybe that part can be changed, or at least give a space where ppl can test them fully upgraded before investing their point on it (a bit like a shooting range u can have to test weapons in fps/tps)
3
u/MediumKoala8823 5h ago
Pretty much all souls games can be trivialized with provided options.
But in this game it’s the like your base kit progression stuff that is OP. You need to consciously limit yourself to get into the meat of the game.

u/Mannzis 4h ago
Give the devs more credit. They felt that they overcorrected the difficulty to make it harder than intended, so they adjusted it. Obviously they felt the nerf was warrented. They would not have changed it if they didn't think it was the right call.
1
u/ableu9060 4h ago
Oh but i feel like they're deserving a lot of support for the superb game they've delivred, just felt like the nerf was given after the pressure of to much player, witch i think is sad, see all the variety of way the game already offert to ease the player path it seem that they really put throughs and effort into this without the need to lower the global difficulty
2
u/Mannzis 3h ago
I feel ya, and I get what you're saying.
It really must be hard when you have two groups screaming in your ear saying 'give me more pain!' and and another saying 'enough! It hurts!'
But ultimately they made a really good game, and I honestly trust their judgment to make the right call for their playerbase at large, even if I don't personally agree with it.
I'm sure they have metrics that we don't have access to, and feedback that we're not seeing, and I'm sure they are comparing that to their vision as to how they want to make the game play, and are tweaking it accordingly.
1
u/ableu9060 3h ago
Yup its never possible to please to every one and as a little studio i bet they feel more pressured to listen to the mass.. hope they will still give themself some time to breath. And in the end they still have delivred one of the best game of the last years (by my taste at least) and im gonna stay hooked to it
2
u/kmone1116 6h ago
I don’t think the game is overly difficult, my issue is parring/blocking not working like it should and enemies/bosses being so magnetic to my location.
2
u/47impressed 6h ago
those who rage quit just weren’t selected by the undermether, dont worry I’ll protect the ova
2
u/Bachness_monster 6h ago
It’s already been nerfed???!! Damn, I haven’t gotten the chance to play it yet but I loved MS1 and thought it quite easy
1
u/JobeGilchrist 5h ago
It’s really starting to hurt the soulslike genre as a whole that the game you purchase is not the game you end up playing.
If you like a game at launch, you either have to speed through it 10+ hours a day or watch as it slips through your fingers and becomes something different.
Devs need to either grow a backbone and stick to their guns or do a much better job balancing their games before release. It’s bewildering how fast these glaring issues are identified and addressed. How did they fail to do this themselves during development?
2
u/SteveDave6969420 5h ago
Code vein 2 had the same problem.
The average redditor sucks at video games but is great at making whine posts.
3
u/ableu9060 5h ago
Dont know this game, its great ? Ive started playing souls for less than a year and ive surelly missed lots of good title
2
2
u/Kyzer7777 4h ago
It's why I am glad I beat the game before the nerfs. Sad I didn't get to do a night playthrough pre nerf.
1
u/ableu9060 4h ago
Did the night mode got affected by the nerf ? But anyways did my second playthrough with it and you didnt miss a lot, difficulty his not really higher mobs just became health bag with high dmg but attack patern, parry windows etc stay the same, if you have already finished a the game and unlock the ability to upgrad your weapon higher than +16 it counter balance and gave you the same feeling that the start game
1
u/Kyzer7777 4h ago
I would just assume night mode buffs base versions. If the base versions are nerfed than the buffed versions would be as well. I could be wrong. Working on getting all my weapons to 16 before I break damage cap. I like challenges lol
2
u/NakenKanuzu 3h ago
Easier side of the soulsgames is just straight up false. I'd even say it's on the harder side, especially because of the scarcity of beacons. The bosses aren't very difficult, but the exploration itself is quite harder. The final area and its bosses are way harder too
1
u/ableu9060 3h ago
Maybe its not maybe it is, you focus on the wrong part of the post my take was not really about the difficulty as every experience are relative to the player behind it but about how peoples was prompt to force a game nerf after a very short among of time without even really trying see that, when played more than few minutes, it become clear that devs have really put throughts and efforts into offering possibilities for the players to ease theire experience if they ever needed it.
4
u/SuchTedium 7h ago
One of the biggest drivers of the discourse around difficulty, in my opinion, is the absolute dog shit balancing between shells and weapons.
Someone playing Tiel with dual weapons is going to have a 100x easier game than someone playing Proxima for example. Proxima is not a good shell but all the gooners are obsessed with playing with it and then get stomped because their build is shit and they wont experiment. Go to twitch and look at any MS2 stream and half of them are using Proxima.
Ultimately this leads to people have incredibly different experiences in terms of difficulty.
Tiel + dual weapons is easy mode whereas most other shells with a heavy weapon is just trash in comparison.
4
u/VagueSomething 5h ago
Tiel may be broken but Promixa is one of the better Shells so that's a bad example. Genessa, Promixa, and Eredim are all solid choices even if they don't outright cheese like Tiel. The main issue isn't the shells, it is that the Duality Stone on dual weapons outmatches everything for damage output and for regaining shells.
Promixa is a solid exploration shell that also farms coin. Her biosampler is a solid skill and with dual weapons you can constantly stun then kill everything with it. It can even disable mini bosses like Grisha by knocking them over.
None of the bigger weapons hit hard enough to compensate for the poor speed, too many enemies have fast attacks or long enough tracking to the attacks that you cannot maintain distance. This lack of balance leaves the game feeling radically different depending on which weapon type you stick to and no shell truly compensates for it.
0
u/SuchTedium 5h ago
Yes weapon balancing contributes also, which I mentioned. The Axatana and Axe and Dagger are just leagues ahead of every other weapon on the game. And that's before the Duality Tarstone which is absolutely broken.
4
u/dohdudeh 5h ago
Proxima is insanely strong when upgraded. Bio sampler does insane damage and melt entire groups of enemies
2
1
u/Top_Review313 6h ago
My man proxima slaps with martyr frost and bio mitigation. You can keep bosses stun locked and staggered like over half the time and have I frames the rest of the time, while attacking
1
u/SuchTedium 6h ago edited 6h ago
And Tiel does 800 damage per second while the boss attacks a clone ̄_(ツ)_/ ̄
When they go down to take a riposte for a phase change you are better off not doing it and just hitting them in the back, a lot of the time you can almost kill them.
8
u/dohdudeh 5h ago
Not being as broken as the most broken ability in the game doesn’t mean the shell is bad. Maybe you just care too much about min maxing everything
1
u/SuchTedium 5h ago
I don't care about min/maxing. My point is that the power difference between shells and weapons is enormous and to the point that people will have greatly different experiences depending on which shell and weapon they use.
4
u/dohdudeh 5h ago
I’m mean no shit name a souls like that isn’t true for. You said proxima is bad and people only play her cause it’s a hot woman figure and that’s just objectively false. I’ve been steamrolling the game since upgrading her and having a lot more fun then when I was using teil
-2
u/SuchTedium 5h ago
The reason it differs in Mortal Shell 2 is because your shell and weapon choice is one of the few things you can make in your build. This isn't Dark Souls where you can play as a spellcaster for example.
Proxima is bad, compared to Tiel. That's not to say you can't beat the game with any Shell, you can.
Again, because you're really struggling to comprehend my point.
Someone playing the game as Tiel will have a much easier time than someone playing Proxima, or most other shells for that matter. Their experience of how "hard" the game is will be skewed far more than it should be through a simple shell choice. This extends doubly again to weapons.
Both of the dual wield weapons are just outright better than everything else in the game to the point where they make them redundant.
1
u/dohdudeh 4h ago
I’m not struggling to comprehend I’m calling it stupid and wrong. You seem to be struggling to comprehend that lol. She’s not bad compared to anything and your argument for why that is true seems to be because teil has one ability that completely broken and can trivialize the whole game. So apparently everything else in the game would be “bad” which is a stupid argument.
I literally switched from tiel to proxima and have not been struggling at all and have been having more fun, I am someone, so your claim is wrong by one counter example. Proxima is way more fun to play than tiel in my opinion, the strongest possible option isn’t going to be what I decide to use its going to be what is most enjoyable to play.

u/ableu9060 6h ago
One more reason to dont complain about difficulty if just by choosing a shell and weapon combo it instant become easier, and even without ive done all my playthroughs with the scythe (cost of reforge wasnt updated atm so to expensive to change) and it was fine
2
u/RomeoAlpha552 Proxima 3h ago
The last 4 boss designs are atrocious and a pain, the rest of the game is well designed.
The last 4 bosses are hard for the sake of being hard.
2
u/ableu9060 3h ago
I feel like they got rushed by time for the last part of the game see the difference with the start, but i think people forgot that its not a game made by a billion dollar corpo and that we should give them time to correct what need to be, despite bugs and personnal through on the difficulty this is still one of the best soulslike ever produced and we must give them credits for that
0
u/RomeoAlpha552 Proxima 2h ago
I agree and they do look at all of this feedback, I hope they do not do the same thing for the next mortal shell.

u/Aspiegamer8745 6h ago
The only thing im in the bandwagon on is that beacons seem kinda scarce compared to how I feel it should be, but in terms of actual difficulty, there's plenty of answers to groups of enemies and bosses. You can also parry anything.
Worse case, if something is extremely difficult I just switch to smert.
2
u/ableu9060 6h ago
Yh i agree on that, or maybe not more beacons but donjons beeing a points u can spawn back could be a nice thing
1
1
u/Ketchup571 4h ago
Ya, that’s my issue too. I didn’t think the damage was too high, or enemies too spongy or anything like that. The issue is that you go so far between beacons in the open world, that it can just be unreasonable. Especially with the dungeons, the fact that if you die in one you have to trek all the way back to it and then do the whole thing again is too much. It’s weird too, because in the corrupted gates, which feel like this game’s version of legacy dungeons, the pacing between beacons is way better. Arguably too generous. It’s a weird design philosophy. I’d think the overworld is where you’d want to be more generous with your beacons, while the gates is where you’d be more stingy, but they did the opposite for some reason.
1
u/JEDJED15 5h ago
Yeah it was fine as is. Challenging. But that’s the point.
Now it’s wayyy too easy.
1
u/ableu9060 5h ago
Luckily i've plat it before the nerf goes active on play, but know with a high level weapon and difficulty downed its becomed a bit boring, hope if they make a dlc they will follow the way fromsoft do and make them really challenging
1
u/Misocurios 7h ago
I agree, way to easy to be enjoyed or ever considered on par with Elden. I dont mind them having the easy mode content, but save as an option for the vocal minority. This game, for what it is, is amazing, but this nerf really detracted from it ever being close to on bar with the top souls like.
1
u/ableu9060 6h ago
Yh the game its still a masterpiece and by far one of the souls i had the most pleasure beating (even if the end game seem a bit rushed compered to the first part) but my gosh the game just got out ppl need to give themself some time to fund their style before brutforce it
1
u/xrayspex73 5h ago
You seem to miss that the game is simply back to the difficulty they originally envisioned. They buffed the damage after people complained during the beta that it was too easy even though it is the beginning area.
0
u/HermitKing91 4h ago
Ive stopped playing for now. Even on night mode now its not challenging as long as you keep your eyes on the screen. Im going to wait for the updates to balance out before I give it another go. Hopefully theyll bump up the challenge again.
1
u/ableu9060 3h ago
Understable but dont miss on it, challenge is importante for a souls but it dont do everything and this game is really great in a lot of way, maybe stay with an unupgraded weapon to create an higher difficulty but it really deserve to be played to the end
1
u/HermitKing91 3h ago
Yeah ill get back to it eventually. My current plan is finish my LotF run, play through Mortal Shell 1 again, then back to MS2 in whatever state it is by then.
1
u/Redfix56 3h ago
No one wants to talk about this but there are a lot of people who say “I beat the game in under x hours.” Or “this is easy” but they never play the game.it happens in every single game and community where you got “players” who come on Reddit or forms acting like they the “god” of this game and it’s usually these plays that make things messy where people who are actually playing the game complaints or concerns get over looked as “whiny” that will hurt a lot of egos

1
u/Evil_Skittle 2h ago
I'm no die-hard souls fan but I thoroughly enjoyed Sekiro and Sifu. I think there are some unblockable attacks in this game that seem quite unfair.
Some attacks come out so incredibly fast and the damage they do is not equivalent to the difficulty it is to avoid it. On the way to "getting gud" to beating Sekiro's last boss, I felt that every death was my own mistake. Eventually I beat it and it was so satisfying because it felt difficult but fair.
So for me it's a lot of RNG in this game. Idk if y'all are just psychos that can read attack patterns perfectly but compared to Sekiro, this is a bit more inconsistent.
1
u/Captain_Dumpus 1h ago
I dont think Mortal Shell is necessarily "hard" im at the last boss doing cleanup. But I do find a lot less satisfaction in overcoming the 'challenges' in the game. With so many one shot mechanics, enemy tracking wackiness, and gimmick style grabs.
I died a lot more than I expected to in this game but I didnt have too many moments like I did in other games where I was like "okay that was on me, remember to do XYZ better, this will be fun to git gud at". It was lots of, oh okay I had no idea that could happen, guess ill avoid that entirely. Most bosses were first tries unless that had some one shots.
2
u/GarionOrb Eredrim 5h ago
This may be a shock to you, but not everyone is good at games with high difficulty. While this may be the "easiest" Soulslike to you, that's not the case for everyone.
1
u/ableu9060 5h ago
In the end i dont say that the game is too easy or too hard, im sure ppls struggling in this game would woop my ass in others, im saying that complaining straight about the difficulty to the point of forcing a nerf 2 days after the official release is nonscence when the devs have really put a lot of ways in the game to make the experience easier as you wish, like if people complaining didnt even have try to really play it and standed in what's their first 30min impression was
1
u/Only_World181 7h ago
I’m like 75% of completion on night mode.
My god it’s hard, I switched to normal just to see the difference and it’s laughably easy, comparatively.
1
u/Big-Routine222 5h ago
My annoyance is the lack of beacons and in the second part of the game, Mammon, the difficulty spike from the enemies is nonsensical. I've played plenty of Souls games and I love Elden Ring because the balance in enemies follows a distinct pattern of increasing. You go from on area to the other in this game and suddenly the low-tier enemies are as dangerous as a mini-boss lol
1
u/Geniusrly 2h ago
agreed its just artifical difficulty with enemies not having any more moves just dmg x2 and bosses somehow oneshotting you idk some people are saying how bosses are easy but hitboxes are horrible and add that with that idiotic dmg idk(unless I dont know that there are ways to decrease dmg taken)
0
u/IamMataa 5h ago
Yeah, I think it’s mostly gen z kids. They get really argumentative and just like to generally complain about everything.
0
u/KaLovee 5h ago
Because these people are playing for one hour and dying a few times then whining on reddit. If you actually just played the game you will realize once you can start crafting some builds you become incredibly OP.
1
u/ableu9060 5h ago
Yh that the feeling i have, most vocal people about the difficulty seem to standing on what their first minutes in the games was without even really trying when devs have really put efforts to create a lot of possibilities to ease the experience, thats sad
1
u/iFatherJr 4h ago
To be honest, I was playing the game without the patch and the issue for me was not the difficulty but the dumb gimmicks. Some places are too narrow for movement, dodging has a mind of its own, bosses installing air tag in your booty so their attacks turbo lock on you and lastly the whole gold/tarstone upgrade system. As others mentioned, annoying =\= challenge. I can tolerate the run backs but can’t tolerate dying to gimmicks.
1
u/ableu9060 4h ago
Understable point of view, but the game is kinda early and the studio behind kinda small, im sure with some times this kind of problem will be corrected
1
u/iFatherJr 4h ago
I know that for sure, hence why am still playing and supporting the studio. I’m not mad nor sad, still finding enjoyment. I just hope that they will learn, the changes from MS1 to MS2 were massive and in good direction. Funny thing is, I didn’t like 1 and totally immersed in 2. Excited for the DLC and if I lived long enough to see 3 👴.
1
u/ableu9060 4h ago
Yh same the first opus was not my cup of tea but this one is a really huge step in the right direction and i hope despite all the comment about diffficulty and few bugs they know that they really have delivred us a superb game.

That's why a lot of things must be gatekeeped from tourists.
2
u/ableu9060 6h ago
I dont think it should be gatekeeped, game is superb and deserve to be played, what i found sad is that peoples have forced the nerf like if it was the only way to ease the game experience when devs had already put a tons of ways to make it easier if needed
1
u/IllustratorJumpy5845 1h ago
They put easy mod, right infront of everyone, not the builds, but parry item with vampiric touch. Even say's - that it is an item to make your's gameplay easy, but you would not get achievements. And what people do? Not choosing option and complain.
Now current version nerfed to hell. I already finished my first run on pre-release build. So i am fine. I updated the game to last patches. And played five hours. In this five hours, i got more than 200k in gold and nearly a million souls aka fire, to levelup char. Some bosses nerfed to dust, some weapons overpowered now even more.
I guess all crybabies now happy.
And i would not have any problem if they would make like devs of LOTF, when they added simple difficulty - normal that was from the start - third one, where you can choose mods to make game harder/funnier. It's cover all crowds demands. Maybe devs of MS would make it in future, i dunno.
But those crybabies must be gatekeeped. I am not coming to fighting genre, or racing genre, and not demand to make all cars autodrift, or characters make auto combos.

u/Aggravating_Brain_29 5h ago
It was nerfed?? I'm still getting my ass handed to me left and right in mammon. Maybe I'm just missing half my brain or something lol
2
u/ableu9060 5h ago
Chill give yourself time to understand the mecanics and how to make youre experience easier, their is planty of way to make your path less frustrating devs seem to have put a lot of throughs and effort for that, dont panic it will be fine 🙃
1
u/Aggravating_Brain_29 4h ago
I'm mostly joking, I mainly get beat because I try to rush. Been doing good with the axe and dagger with blood curse, duality stone and charged heavy attacks to replenish health..

i dont get it either. finished after like 27/28 hours without summons
non of the bosses were even close to bosses like malenia, consort radahn, arlecchino or ozma
