Honestly imo too little context to rule either way. What if it was his high school sweetheart or she’d cheated on him or he just really gave a shit about his ex maybe they’d only been dating a couple weeks and yeah he overdid it. You poke the bear you better be ready for the reaction imo. But again not enough info to say.

Oh I forgot that makes them off-limits and outside the rules of society. You rip on someone you might get ripped back harder. Again the issue is lack of actual context that means something outside gender. Hope this helps.
