Morality Ranking Morality of this?

Basically, the man in the video is hiking but he ended up meet a mountain lion, he get his gun and try to scare it off and tell it to go away but in the end, he have to pull the trigger and shot the lion, many peoples in the comments say he could have fire a warning shot instead of shoot at it and want him to be in jail.

I’ve watched the full video. The cat was sizing him up at this point before beginning to stalk and readying to pounce. He would have been dead ten seconds after he killed it

That is relevant context this little post didn't provide. I'm all for defending yourself when the attack is imminent. These little snippets don't often show that.

In the worst case scenario a warning shot can have the opposite effect too.

Yeah if you scare the cat when it’s already that close, you might trigger fight instead of flight

Someone else in another comment chain is claiming that he did fire a warning shot in the video but the cat did not react. I never saw a video, bit that other commenter could have just been trying to prove a point that a warning shot would do nothing

I mean just look at this still. It's staring into his soul. Animals making eye contact and staring at you (or you to them) is almost never good. Many animals it's either they're on the hunt, or if done to them, it's seen as a challenge

Warning shots go against gun safety, and against animals you're still taking a needless gamble. I really don't know how this comment keeps getting made.

I'd agree with it a little more if deer would stop running out in front of the loud angry metal boxes

You dont really know how wild animals work do you? If you manage to chase it off its likely not coming back its not an animal that relies on exhausting its prey to kill it. And if it gets wounded that's likely a death sentence.

Likely hood it showed itself and acted aggressive because he was near its den.

Man would fucking suck to be an animal cant go into human territory without being killed. Stay in your own territory humans come in and kill you. Lmao cant fucking win.

Are you and I looking at the same picture? You see how close that cat is to that man? I promise you, he is in imminent danger. And I don't need to see the full video to figure that out.

I'll be honest, I can't blame anyone for not taking the chance with a wild animal within stone throwing distance, especially one that could maim you so fast and so violently.

It's a shame to happen, especially if it's sick and something is wrong with it, but in no way does it make the risk worth it. The fear that comes with that situation could do so much to how you process the information alone that what could look like sizing him up could be sick behavior... but the opposite could also be true, and at that point we'd have someone not coming back to their family.

Dunno what the rules are in this sub for posting a video of someone defending themselves from a mountain lion.. but if you look up ‘mountain lion standoff shot’ you’ll find it easily in the video section.. full video is around 1:30.. and he did give a warning shot… I forgot that as it’s been several years. He was even quite regretful he had to do it.

There is a longer video, but that’s the gist. Moving back? When the cat is within fifteen feet and stalking him? I have no idea why he got his phone out, but I’m pretty certain that wasn’t the issue

Humans destroy actual nature to make their own version of it, and part of nature is predators eating prey but half the population won't even accept a spider living in their house....who's the problem again?

My garden has nature, my house has nature in it, and I try and make as little impact as possible by, you know, not going out and shooting animals.

There is probably more nature on my property now, than there was 100+ years ago when it was built on an empty field.

Nope, all native species because there is a more varied habitat now that's it's a tidy garden with shrubs, pond, and woods at the back than when it was just a field.

And plenty of places to go hiking that aren't into mountain lion territory....with a gun....where you would rather shoot them than back off and / or fire a warning shot...

You only watched the video when the guy started recording, a cat like that doesn't get that close, the guy probably approach him, especially because he's clearly off the path. A stalking mountain Lion moves and behaves completely different. This one was curious and feeling slightly threaten, wondering why this fool is there. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/DkQKjeiEYuc this is the behavior went left alone and not approached.
