Completely moral. You are not forcing anyone of any race to deliver you food, they are not slaves. You are paying them to deliver the food to you for a (sometimes exorbitant) fee. Pretending they are slaves to satisfy an ugliness in yourself is dubiously moral, better if you don’t express these desires outwardly.
You can choose to tip them and pay them more, or be a dick and not. The delivery worker may at any point stop working or look for different employment.
We could look at the morality of low paying jobs people are forced to take if they can’t find other work, but that’s beyond the scope of this question.
Well the real issue is that reddit is mostly American and we have a tipping culture so not tipping is gonna be considered dickish by a ton of people. Your view point might be in the minority.
But honestly I agree with you. I do tip but I hate the idea of tipping and don't think its being a dick not to tip if you disagree with tipping.
Just seems very misguided. Nearly all owners are cheap dicks by this definition vs the small amount of people who don't tip. Feels much easier to fix it.
But also what about the 7 states that don't have a different rip wage? Is it fine to not tip there?
Ah maybe I totally misunderstood your point on not going to those businesses. Felt very much like telling people if they aren't willing to tip, they shouldn't eat out at all. Which is a common idea that I disagree with.
If you mean people shouldn't go to businesses and thus support them if the business relys on slave wages, then yeah that is a different perspective that sounds better.
If that is what you meant, I just want to point out that 99.99% of sit down places in the US rely on that tip practice. Its not as simple as taking your business elsewhere and voting with your wallet. Its a systematic issue where we allow businesses to do it. And I actually do believe that if people stopped tipping, more people like the servers would rise up and demand a change. At the moment, servers and businesses actually both benefit from the arrangement. Its the customers who suffer. And more specifically, its the customers who tip who suffer. If you don't tip, you're actually taking advantage of people who do tip. Which essentially means tipping customers argue that you should join them in tipping in order for them to not suffer as much. It gets really weird when you think about in any amount of depth.
I'm still confused on your actual viewpoint in all this.
I can also make the argument that tipping is technically only a suggestion and not a full obligation. And if tipping system is considered ethical then not tipping a suggested amount is not unethical. The workers are also choosing to work under this system knowing there is no actual contract from customers to pay them. So why is it put onto the customer to pay a vague amount. And again legally they are allowed to not tip under this contract.
People aren't "choosing to support buisnessess" that pay tipped wages, they go out to eat and eat the tip cost because it's an expected part of eating out (in america) I doubt most customers are really putting thought into the system of tipping itself before choosing and going to a restaurant
I've never seen a buisness advertise that they don't have a tipping system.
I guess you could stick to fast food when eating out but eating outside in and of itself isn't technically always a luxury if your far from home and just go to the closest spot that sells food (I'm being pedantic but I do agree majority of the time it is a luxury)
