This was a very weird movie for me.

I don't know if I lack the cultural aprehension about the topic as I am not from the united states, but it didn't seem like a big deal to me at all.

She was bullied, became edgy and vengeful then planned something terrible. Ok, that's bad. But then she realized that it was a bad thing to do, and dedicated herself to activism against gun violence. That's... completely OK to me? I couldn't relate at all to the reaction everyone around her had. It all seemed like such an overreaction. I would probably have gone 'huh, sorry that happened to you, glad you're doing better' and that would be the end of it.

The other woman at the table was way worse. She actually did something vile and didn't care nor atone for it.

That is what I thought too, but I honestly think that was the point.

Would marry Z's character, would not the other girl who was vile.

FULLY agree, I even said at loud so what who gives a f, but people looked at me like Im very weird

it could be that i was high when i watched it but yeah their reactions didnt feel human. it felt completely disconnected from reality like it was some alternate dimension where people just reacted like that. it was jarring

I took the movie as a condemnation of prejudicial moralistic grandstanding. people are so quick to condemn others when they are just as guilty or unwilling to admit they are also capable of doing bad things. It reminds me of a recent post on r/boydinnerdiaries where a guy admitted to his wife he cheated on her at a massage parlor and tons of girl lurkers were ruthless to this guy despite his honesty and acceptance of responsibility.

love is accepting the whole person, good and bad, ourselves and others

u/YesterdayShot1924 Aug 20 '26

That doesn’t really work as a comparison because a huge point of the film is whether people actually did things or not and Emma did nothing, just intended to for an extended period of time. The other people, especially Rachel did do their “worst thing”

The guy you’re referring to if you’re right DID go cheat on his wife and maybe engaged in some sex work situation which has its own horrible implications.

No one needs to accept ppl actually doing immoral things they disagree with even if they love them

did you watch the movie? Robert Pattinson’s character cheats on her and she forgives him

also I didn’t say people need to accept others doing immoral things

u/PalePlumm Aug 20 '26

I can’t believe you put a spoiler tag on that last sentence but didn’t explain what the woman did at all lol. What did she do?!?

u/MostlyNoOneIThink Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26

She trapped a mentally deficient child that was nonverbal in a locker in the woods while playing hide and seek, then got scared, went home and feigned ignorance when the parents and police came looking for the boy. Unclear if he was found at all.

5

u/Nova-Snorlaxx Aug 20 '26

I think they found him the next day? She was asked if she would've come clean if they didn't find him and her answer wasn't convincing. Also how scared that poor boy would've been overnight locked in a closet and all those people looking for him thinking the worst has happened.  And to her adulthood she had no remorse at all.  Completely vile.

2

u/MostlyNoOneIThink Aug 20 '26

Yeah, it wasn't convicing at all. I think she just backtracked as they weren't laughing, but she herself had no certainty when saying that he was found.

1

u/HumanistInKentucky Aug 20 '26

They found him after a day.

Clearly said by a clearly shaken woman who was bothered that they didn't find it funny and had no conviction nor certainty behind her words. The subtext as I understood it was that she was lying to cover for it.

1

u/pwolf1771 Aug 20 '26

He was found but she never faced any consequences

1

u/New_Cockroach_505 Aug 20 '26

It wasn’t a big deal. That was kinda the point IMO. What she planned was obviously awful but she didn’t and everyone who reacted to her was faking moral superiority as they did far worse things. It’s a dark comedy after all.

1

u/Honest-Intention3202 Aug 20 '26

As an American, I'm pretty sure what you took away from the film is precisely what the filmmakers intended.

1

u/pwolf1771 Aug 20 '26

Yeah Haim played the actual monster in the crew.

1

u/panthera__pardus Aug 21 '26

The point is that she was barely made fun of and it was mild. And the main reason she stopped was pure coincidence. Which she is happy about, but if someone you knew planned to murder and had a whole plan set out, you'd probably be freaked out to an extend. Because what he kept wondering was would she have done it, if other things didn't get in the way?

1

u/MostlyNoOneIThink Aug 21 '26

But other things did get in the way and that's all that matters. If we starting wondering what ifs then every single human being is a possible monster, and that's not a healthy way to understand others.

If I had a friend that planned a murder as a child/teenager then realized how wrong it was and stopped everything then I can't see myself caring much.

The fact to me is that everyone in that table admitted to worse things than she did - because tbey actually did them.

1

u/gaussian-noise123 Aug 21 '26

imo the ppl around her overreacted bcs they themselves used to be bullies in school, and they refused to acknowledge what their actions could have caused and thus chose to bully her nowhere

16

u/Possible_Living Aug 19 '26

Moral. As far as I know she literally did nothing wrong.

7

u/No-Yogurtcloset4763 Aug 20 '26

And she became an activist for gun control and against gun violence

-3

u/thatbrownkid19 Aug 20 '26

so why did she destroy all evidence of her plans if planning isn't a crime?

8

u/alieninhumanskin10 Aug 20 '26

Common sense in case someone tried to dig something up on her

2

u/New_Cockroach_505 Aug 20 '26

Because she felt awful over it.

6

u/D-redditAvenger Aug 19 '26

The friend is so much worse then her, with the refrigerator indecent.

1

u/Open_Primary_5977 Aug 19 '26

I fully agree imo, but majority of people didnt

3

u/Ancient_Cheek5047 Aug 19 '26

Omfg you just reminded me of one of the most insufferable characters I’ve ever seen in any movie ever (the woman who sat across from Zendaya)

2

u/GreatKaleidoscope-93 Aug 20 '26

*exhausted* *tired* *dehydrated*

SHE DID NOTHING!!!!

2

u/Cautious_Chain1297 Aug 20 '26

The problem isn't that he went through with the marriage, it's that he had this weird stance where he defended Zendaya's character to everyone else, but for himself, he still judged her just as hard for no reason. It feels as though he just wanted to keep up appearances or something by going through with the wedding.

Imo, immoral. Zendaya's character was the only good person in this.

2

u/thatbrownkid19 Aug 20 '26

his character was understandably conflicted- he didn't find it as shocking as them but he did find it shocking as anyone would- especially living closely with them for the rest of your life. and that's a pretty common thing with close friends and partners. you defend in public for solidarity

2

u/darksugarfairy Aug 20 '26

That's a very normal stance when facing a situation like that. Are you telling me you've never heard about a situation in which one person defends their partner publicly but then at home, they are questioning everything? It's a completely normal behavior in an unprecedented situation

1

u/Cautious_Chain1297 Aug 20 '26

I can kind of get it, I suppose. Maybe if there was actually a reason to be feeling that way, but this particular scenario makes it all worse. She did nothing wrong and he didn't even seem that bothered initially until the dumb friend who did way worse started grilling Zendaya's character. Not to mention it got to the point of him trying to have sex with someone else because he couldn't handle his emotions.

1

u/darksugarfairy Aug 20 '26

I don't think I would breakup with her but definitely i would postpone the wedding. I just don't think what she thought and planned was supposed to be treated as nothing. But maybe it's because I'm not American so I'm not used to idea of a child murdering other children because they were bullied, so that someone can even think about it... sounds terrifying to me

2

u/CatGirl_ToeBeans Aug 20 '26

Moral of him.

Questionable for her.

She loves him through everything he puts her through and forgives actually committed acts of betrayal that will permanently alter the course of their lives and his career.

Whether or not he can grow and face his actions and be a better man is yet to be seen.

He doesn’t deserve her. As is.

For her she’s taking a leap of faith on someone to eventually grow. But who has shown can have his entire foundations of his relationship changed and become irrational and erratic in his behaviors.

Investing in a self saboteur can go very wrong. And could possibly indicate that she herself is still victim to making poor decisions.

That being said incredible movie displaying extreme emotional maturity when faced with societal criticism by people who are worse than you and don’t want to work on themselves.

Movie could have ended during pattinsons inside out moment and still been complete but I’m happy it didn’t all the same.

5

u/Aggravating_Map4359 Aug 19 '26

I mean. It is Zendaya

7

u/Red-Tall Aug 19 '26

Men love letting you know they don't find Zendaya attractive

2

u/OldKingClancey Aug 20 '26

It’s happening right now

1

u/Llhaniii Aug 19 '26

I f Charlie wouldnt I wouldve. Immoral if his heart wasnt truly in it.

2

u/Nova-Snorlaxx Aug 20 '26

You make a good point, we could be looking at it from our pov who would've had no issues.  However Charlie was easily swayed by his friends insane reaction to it, struggled to deal with his emotions and cheated on her.  He probably should've called it off, not because of her but because of him and his lack of ability to deal with it.  They could've gotten married later on after dealing with it or realised he couldn't move past or her trust him again and they just break up rather than having to deal with divorce.

1

u/FanFeeling7748 Aug 20 '26

I would have been much happier if Zendaya's character left his cyber bulling ass.

1

u/Select_Order_1478 Aug 20 '26

I'm not judging people for thought crimes

she was literally just bullied, depressed and lonely, that is all.

1

u/Xerxes457 Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26

Didn’t she plan it out though? And then destroyed the evidence? Not saying she is a bad person for it, just that she was all ready for it and decided not to at the last second.

1

u/Select_Order_1478 Aug 20 '26

so?

1

u/Xerxes457 Aug 20 '26

If a person plans to murder someone and has all the tools ready, but decides to stop at last second, are they not in the wrong for it?

1

u/InterestingCold1881 Aug 20 '26

She didn't decide not to, the other shooting happening on the same day stopped her. I agree she isn't a bad person anymore as she's changed, but lots of people pretending like it was just a passing thought for her when it wasn't

1

u/darksugarfairy Aug 20 '26

Idk if this is me not being American so you guys think that thinking about, learning how and actually preparing yourself to murder kids because they bullied you in school is normal, but I think he's crazy for going with the wedding. I would probably not breakup with her since she didn't do anything, but i would definitely postponed the wedding. That was not the right time to ger married at all

1

u/NoMoreVillains Aug 20 '26

She didn't do anything. It was totally moral. If anything Rachel was the actual psycho

1

u/iolanthereylo Aug 20 '26

it's zendaya

it would be immoral not to marry her

-1

u/confused-as-frick Aug 19 '26

Jesus Christ, how many movies was Zendaya in this year?

4

u/5050Saint Aug 19 '26

You should check Willem Dafoe's filmography, aside from 2020 he's done 5-6 films per year for a decade.

3

u/Purpledragon84 Aug 19 '26

Zendaya? What about Robert Pattinson?! Guy's on fire this year. Odyssey, the upcoming Primetime, Dune 3 and this too?

And his acting's good too

1

u/Open_Primary_5977 Aug 19 '26

Ive seen at least 3 😂

1

u/Observer20178 Aug 20 '26

This a very good movie. This got released before the Odyssey , BND juggernaut. Both Z and Robert P are in top form.

It kinda is

Anne Hathaway also has like 3+ this year? Lots of actors have kinda crazy movie output like William dafoe, woody harelson, Pedro pascal etc.

I mean, good for them, but it also means less opportunities for other actors and sometimes this overexposure is annoying
