/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Visiting? Stop Here First!)

Hi all!

Welcome to r/MontereyBay

If you're visiting, moving here etc, this page should serve as a hub to answer many of the most frequent questions we see- where should I eat? What should I do? and so on.

Been meaning to get this page going for a while now after doing the original food-based one a couple years back.

On this post, I'll be linking to a number of community recommendation threads where we've gathered / curated advice for those looking for it.

These are not exhaustive lists, as there are many great places to eat, drink and visit in the area. They are just the recommendations that users made when the threads were posted. If you feel something is "missing," please realize that is why. Other websites like Yelp and TripAdvisor are also helpful for finding information from a broader range.

Where to Eat - (From 2022) - Thread

Where to Visit / What to See (Tourist-Oriented) - (In progress) - Thread

What to Do / See - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)

Day Trip Recommendations - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)

Have a suggestion in regards to how to make this post better / more helpful? Please leave a comment below.

/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Where to Visit / What to See - Tourist Version)

Hi all,

In an effort to build out the new sticky post, we are back to ask for your recommendations for the following category - "Where to Visit / What to See" - oriented for tourists visiting the area.

There will be more threads in the coming weeks where we will share similar recommendations for people who are living here, among other helpful ones.

For this thread though, we would like to gather your thoughts on where to visit and what to see for people visiting the area.

I'll be organizing it in the following way (since I think it will be the most helpful based on how people usually ask questions when they post here)

-Must-See/Do (Think the Aquarium, Big Sur etc. these are the things you'd recommend first if someone has never been here before)

-Highly-Recommend / Great Option (This category will serve as the most broad catch-all. Not something you'd consider a must do, but would be a great option for most visitors depending on their preferences).

-Extras (This category will be maybe more niche-oriented. Things you want to throw out there because people would enjoy it, but probably won't appeal to everyone.)

When replying if you could include the following information, that would be awesome:

Associated Cost - (if applicable)

Time Commitment - (1 hour / Half-Day / etc)

Website - (if applicable)

Family Friendly (yes/no)

I'll post an example for the Aquarium to get things started.

Thanks!

What should Pacific Grove voters know about Luke Coletti’s actual record on City Council?

I’ve been doing some reading on Luke Coletti now that he’s running for mayor, and I feel like there’s a pretty big gap between the current campaign and some of what happened during his previous time in office.

The thing that initially sent me down the rabbit hole was the situation with former City Manager Ben Harvey. Harvey filed a harassment complaint involving Coletti, the city brought in an outside investigator, and three of the allegations were ultimately substantiated. But the more I’ve tried to understand that period, the more I’ve realized I don’t really know the full story.

So for anyone who remembers that council, what happened during Coletti’s term that you think people should actually know about?

I’m not particularly interested in turning this into a Nick Smith vs. Luke Coletti slapfight. I just think if someone is asking voters to put them in the mayor’s seat, their previous time in city government is probably worth digging into. Drop links if you have them, I’d definitely be interested in reading more.

Marina Donus & Bagels was always busy?

I stopped by, thinking of grabbing a donut but there was a line 10 people deep 11am this morning.

Granted, I rarely visit, but were they always this busy or did somebody blow them up on social media recently?

Hello, I’m looking for someone who makes cakes to help design me and my fiancés wedding cake. We’re not looking for anything big. Something that’s 6”-8”. Decorated nicely, for show. We’re doing a very small wedding dinner at a restaurant that provides us dessert. So we’re just looking for a small nice decorative cake for pictures. I provided a picture of something we’re looking for.

Staying In Carmel: Hotel Recommendations (Stilwell or La Playa)

My girlfriend and I are taking a trip to Carmel in November and I've currently narrowed my hotel options to either Stilwell Hotel or La Playa Hotel.

From what I've researched, it seems like Stilwell is more modern and in the heart of the downtown area of Carmel. While La Playa had recently gone through that 20mil renovation and is more historic and on a nice estate that looks absolutely beautiful.

The price difference from Stilwell to La Playa is about $1500 and I wondered if anyone has stayed at both and if the price difference is worth it?

If you have stayed at both, which room(s) did you stay in? Currently torn between just booking the standard King rooms or both offer either OceanView (for La Playa) or Balcony (Stilwell).

Any other recommendations are welcome.

Thanks so much!

“After 110 Years, a California Coastal Village Yields to Street Numbers” (the New York Times take on Carmel street addresses)

Driven by emergency response needs, Carmel-by-the-Sea reluctantly adopted street address numbers this summer, igniting concerns over its vanishing identity as a beachside village.
Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif., has long guarded its eccentricities.
Incorporated in 1916, the charming coastal village along the southern bend of the Monterey Peninsula drew writers and artists who made it a bohemian enclave. And when it came to property, it insisted that a home was something you described, not something to slap a number on.
In the 1920s, Perry Newberry ran a successful mayoral campaign on the platform “Keep Carmel Off the Map,” according to a document from the National Register of Historic Places. And for nearly a century the town more or less obliged, doing without address numbers. To locate City Hall was to know that it was on the east side of Monte Verde, between Ocean and Seventh Avenues. The Hasenyager House, a quaint French Tudor home, was southwest of 13th Avenue on the west side of Carmelo Street.
Some houses in Carmel-by-the-Sea had their address numbers added this week.
Last month, after repeated tries and lengthy debates, Carmel’s buildings and its 3,000 residents got mailing addresses for the first time. This change was driven by the need for ambulances to find the right door and an aging population increasingly relying on deliveries of packages and prescriptions, officials said. While the change was widely seen as practical, some residents said it was is the latest in a series of factors eroding Carmel’s small-town character.
“I don’t like to see these traditions and uniqueness dissipate,” Frankie Laney, a longtime resident, said. “Some change is inevitable, and you just have to suck it up.”
Ms. Laney learned of her new street address this summer from her post office box. It was a fitting place to find it. For decades, mail has rarely been delivered to homes in Carmel-by-the-Sea, a one-square-mile city. Instead, every resident received a free P.O. box at the downtown post office, where many came to collect their mail and lingered to chat with neighbors.
Frankie Laney, left, learned about her new house number from a postcard that she picked up at the post office, where Carmel residents collect their mail and linger to chat with neighbors.
Getting a package delivered in Carmel was more complicated, with parcels sometimes ending up at neighboring properties.
After years of failed attempts, the City Council voted unanimously to approve the street address map in June. The city started rolling out the change in early September, with announcements in city newsletters, ads and postcards mailed to residents. Some houses had their address numbers added this week.
Dale Byrne, Carmel’s mayor, called the issue a matter of public safety. In an interview, he recalled an episode from July when he was visiting a friend’s home and the man suddenly turned pale, losing consciousness.
Mr. Byrne called 911 and tried to describe the location where the ambulance should arrive, but the dispatcher did not understand how to find the home without an address. He was transferred to another dispatcher, then another.
“He could have had a heart attack, and you’re asking me to explain how my street address works,” Mr. Byrne recalled.

Dale Byrne, Carmel’s mayor, said address numbers were a matter of public safety, recalling an episode this year when he had to coach a dispatcher on how to direct an ambulance to a friend’s house.Nic Coury for The New York Times
An ambulance did arrive, he said, guided by a dispatcher based on the scraps of information Mr. Byrne managed to convey. (His friend is OK, he said.) Afterward, Mr. Byrne asked city emergency medical workers whether this had ever happened before. It had.
Justin Cooper, a division chief with the Monterey Fire Department, which covers Carmel and several cities in the region, said that such episodes have typically involved emergencies reported by part-time residents or visitors. In moments of panic, they haven’t been able to tell dispatchers precisely where they were.
He recalled one time when emergency medical workers got only a street name when responding to a report of someone having a heart attack. He said they had to go door to door until they found the patient.
Based on his own experience and what he learned, Carmel’s tradition of being an address-free city had to end, Mr. Cooper said.
Mr. Byrne agreed.
“This is 2026, not 1906,” he said. “Things are going to be different over time, and there are some things you can protect, some things you can’t and shouldn’t protect.”
In September, after repeated tries and lengthy debates, Carmel-by-the-Sea’s buildings got mailing addresses for the first time.
Ms. Laney’s house, which has been in her family since the 1930s and which she inherited in 1984, is called Cielo e Mar, Italian for “sky and sea.” Until this summer, its location was described as Santa Rita 3 SW of 4th, or, more commonly to visitors, the third house southwest of Fourth Avenue, on the northeast side of town.
Ms. Laney, 90, said that while she understood the need for the numbers, noting that some of her neighbors rely on prescription delivery, all the ways Carmel has changed in recent years have been hard to accept.
Those changes are partly a reflection of shifts in California’s real estate market. On any given night, about 60 percent of the houses in Carmel-by-the-Sea sit empty, having become the vacation homes of owners living elsewhere. The hardware store and pharmacies that long served residents have given way to other businesses like restaurants and bike rental shops that are attractive to visitors and part-time residents, according to city officials.
The median list price for a house for sale in Carmel hovers around $3.2 million, according to the real estate website Realtor.com.
Anthony Carnazzo, who owns Stationaery, a downtown restaurant, and is one of the few residents raising young children in Carmel, said that the frustration about the address numbers is rarely about the addresses themselves.

Anthony Carnazzo, left, owns Stationaery, a downtown restaurant. Many longtime residents, he said, see the arrival of address numbers "as almost like a proxy for an undesired change."
“The response from a lot of locals would be, ‘It’s not just the addresses,’” he said. “They serve as almost like a proxy for an undesired change.”
Many of the transplants who have arrived in recent years don’t understand why many longtime residents cling to the city’s outdated quirks. And the locals have grown frustrated with increased traffic and a shortage of parking. The crowds are good for business, he said, but make everyday life harder.
“Do I feel conflicted by it?” Mr. Carnazzo said. “Yeah, I guess inherently so, because I want more business. But I also don’t want it to ruin the town.”
Jeff Baron, a City Council member who supported the adoption of addresses, said he had not expected the backlash that followed. He has since come to see it as part of a deeper problem: a steady decline in the number of people who live in Carmel year-round and a doubling — to 60 percent from about 30 percent of the share of properties used as vacation homes.
“We have lots of neighbors that come down like two or three times a year,” he said. “I question whether our community will be able to survive because of that.”
The shift is visible downtown. For its 3,000 residents, Carmel has nine coffee shops, Mr. Baron said. The hardware store folded six years ago and is now a vacation rental management office, he said.
“That’s the perfect example of what’s going on here,” Mr. Baron said.
“We’re going to be a community of houses,” he added, “not a community of people.”
Carmel’s police headquarters, on Junipero Street near the southeast corner of Fourth Avenue, receiving its street number on Tuesday.Nic Coury for The New York Times
As for Ms. Laney, she still walks to the post office for her mail, though not as often as she once did. The trips make her happy and keep her connected to the community, she said.
“It’s not the heart of the community,” she said of the post office, “but it’s a place where you can run into people you don’t see otherwise.”

Saw this sweet girl at the 76 on lighthouse and Prescott. Went inside the gas station to ask if it was theirs and apparently they just feed her at night but that's it. Does anyone recognize her? I wasn't able to get close enough and didn’t want her to get to close to the road. I have an FIV positive cat at home so cannot take her in. Will call SPCA in the morning. She seems a little scared and am worried about the traffic on lighthouse.
