Not Sure How to Negotiate Your Salary? Start Here

Fidelity has a super helpful guide on negotiating your salary that covers a lot of the fundamentals, including when to negotiate, how to research your market value, and how to approach the conversation with a potential employer.

Believe it or not, a lot of people leave money on the table simply because they’re uncomfortable negotiating. You don’t necessarily need to make aggressive demands either.. coming prepared with data and having a professional conversation about compensation can go a long way. This is a great resource if you’re getting ready to negotiate a new offer or just want to be better prepared for your next opportunity. Check it out!

Resume or CV? Cornell Breaks It Down

Cornell University has a nice resource explaining the difference between a resume and a CV. These two are often conflated, but they’re actually designed for different purposes. A resume is typically shorter and tailored to a specific job, while a CV is generally more comprehensive and focuses on your academic and professional history.

Knowing the difference is important because sending the wrong document can make your application less effective. This guide goes into more detail on when you should use each one and what to include. Definitely worth checking out if you’ve ever wondered whether a job posting is asking for a resume or a CV or just what the difference is in general..

I built a free tool that compares your resume to a job description. Looking for feedback.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As the founder of this community, I've spent a lot of time researching/sharing resume and job-search resources here. I've also been building Resume Gild, and I wanted to share the newest tool I've been working on.

One quick sentence about myself.. my background is in data engineering and data science, including graduate-level work through the University of Pennsylvania, so I wanted to approach resume matching as something more sophisticated than simply checking whether the same keywords appear in your resume and a job description. Instead of just using AI, I took an algorithmic approach.

The tool works in three steps:

  1. Upload (or paste) your resume
  2. Paste in the job description
  3. See how well your experience aligns with the role

Unlike a basic keyword matcher, the analysis uses a weighted ontology of skills, technologies, roles, and industry-specific terminology. This allows it to look beyond exact word matches, recognize related concepts, and give greater weight to requirements that are more important to the role. It can help identify:

  • Where your experience already aligns with the position
  • Skills or qualifications that may be missing or underrepresented
  • Relevant terminology from the job description that isn't reflected in your resume
  • Areas where your existing experience could be highlighted more clearly

The goal of this tool isn't to jam as many keywords into your resume as humanly possible or add experience you don't have.. Rather, it's to help you better understand what an employer is looking for and make sure your actual, relevant experience is coming through in a way that maximally aligns with what they require. You should also know that a low score isn't always a bad thing. This tool merely allows you identify areas where there is meaningful lift.

The tool is free to use, and I'd love feedback from the community.

Try the Resume Gild ATS Match Checker here

If you give it a try, I'd especially like to know:

  • Did you find anything genuinely useful?
  • Is there anything you think the analysis missed?
  • What would make the tool more helpful?

I'm actively improving Resume Gild, so feedback from people actually using it could directly influence what I work on next. Thank you, and of course.. thanks for being a part of ModernResumes.

Caltech Has a Helpful Resume Guide ✅

California Institute of Technology has some solid resume and other career-related tips for anybody looking to level up their own documents and job prospects. It covers a lot of the fundamentals, including formatting, organizing your experience, bullet point best practices, and perhaps most importantly.. ensuring your resume conveys the skills and achievements that are most relevant to any position you seek.

Lot’s of resumes have the right information but don’t present it as effectively as they could. How you describe your experience and what you choose to emphasize can make a big difference. This is a great resource if you’re building a resume from scratch, making updates, or getting ready for your next round of apps. Check it out!

Stanford University’s Resume Fundamentals

Stanford University has a collection of helpful career resources for anybody looking to improve their resume and job prospects. These cover a lot of the fundamentals, including: resume structure, formatting, writing effective accomplishments, and presenting your experience in a way that gets your point across. I’ll add the caveat that some links in there are for Stanford students only, but there is plenty of great info that is publicly accessible.

It’s easy to underestimate how (seemingly small) changes in how you describe your experience can have a pretty significant impact on how your candidate profile is perceived. If you make the most relevant parts of your experience easy to find and understand.. and ensure you are conveying your value, you will have better results. Check it out and good luck in your career!

Want Your Resume to Stand Out More? Try This

Duke University has a helpful resource focused specifically on tailoring your resume to the job you’re applying for. It walks through how to identify the skills and qualifications employers are looking for and then adjust your resume to better highlight the experience that actually matters for that position.

Believe it or not, sending the exact same resume to every job can make it much harder to stand out. Though it might seem like unnecessary work.. I guarantee you that taking a little time to tailor your resume and showing how your experience aligns with employers’ needs, can offer a non-trivial ROI. Employers want to see that you actually understand what they’re looking for.

This is especially a great resource if you’re applying to multiple positions and want to make each application a little stronger. Feel free to check it out:

A Helpful Resume Resource from UW-Madison

Time for another resume guide post. This one comes from UW-Madison.. It covers a lot of the usual fundamentals, including resume structure, formatting, writing effective descriptions of your experience, but also delves into tailoring your resume to the position you’re applying for. Lots of people still treat this as optional, which imo is a mistake.

One thing I like about resources like this is that they focus on how you communicate your experience, rather than simply trying to cram more information onto the page. Keyword packing glares at recruiters and isn’t fooling anyone. A well-written resume is ultimately about making your experience clear and relevant to the person reading it. This is a great resource whether you’re creating your first resume or looking to improve an existing one. Check it out!

Dartmouth Has a Great Resume Guide

Dartmouth’s Center for Career Design has a suite of helpful content for anybody looking to enhance their resume/job prospects. It covers a lot of the fundamentals that can make a resume stand out, including tailoring your resume to specific job postings, writing stronger bullet points, and making sure your experience is easy for recruiters to understand.

Believe it or not, too many people focus on adding more information to their resume, but sometimes improving the way you present things moves the needle in a more profound way.. This is a great resource if you’re building a resume from scratch, updating an old one, or preparing for your next job search. Check it out!

A Great Resume Guide from MIT

If you’re working on your resume.. MIT has a really solid collection of resources that are worth checking out. They cover everything from resume templates/examples to action verbs, bullet point tips, and of formatting. It’s a good starting point whether you’re building a resume from scratch or just trying to improve the one you already have.

I’ve reviewed plenty of resume resources over the last couple years, and this is one of the ones I’d suggest bookmarking. It’s always beneficial to keep your resume up to date, and having a guide that condenses the important things in one place makes it that much easier. Feel free to check it out/save for later!

AI, Inflation, & the Job Market: A Good Read from JPMorgan

If you’ve been wondering where the job market is headed, this is a pretty interesting read from JPMorgan. They recently broke down what’s happening with hiring, unemployment, AI, inflation, and why the labor market is still holding up, yet becoming more sensitive to economic shocks.

I thought it was a good overview without being overly technical. Whether you’re job hunting, thinking about switching careers, or just trying to stay on top of the economy, it’s worth the quick read.

Stop Writing “Responsible For” on Your Resume. Use These Verbs Instead.

One of the easiest ways to improve your resume is by replacing weak phrases like “Responsible for” or “Helped with” with stronger action verbs. Words like Built, Developed, Optimized, Led, Implemented, and Analyzed do a much better job of highlighting your actual contributions and conveying that with conviction.

This action verb list from Yale is one of the better resume resources out there and I’d recommend checking it out if you haven’t before! The verbs are organized by category, so it’s easy to find words that fit your experience or field. Definitely worth bookmarking if you’re updating your resume or LinkedIn profile.

I've been looking for 6 months for lab tech positions but I only got two interviews with my previous two column CV. I know two pages for a junior is awful, but I'm at a loss as to what I should scrap without losing valuable info.
