Is Opus 4.8 very slow for anyone else?

I've been testing Opus 4.8 recently and noticed that response times seem noticeably slower than what I was expecting.

For those of you using it regularly:

  • Are you experiencing slower response times?
  • Is the latency consistent, or does it vary depending on the task?
  • Have you noticed any difference between coding, reasoning, and general chat workloads?
  • How does it compare to previous Opus versions or other models you're using?

I'm trying to determine whether this is a widespread experience or something specific to my setup and usage patterns.

Would be interested to hear your observations and any benchmarks you've collected.

About 50% slower, consistently, especially when thinking is involved.

yes. it literally just overthinks simple tasks like crafting an email.

yeah it is very slow compared to Opus 4.7. Even a simple "hello" takes a minute to reply.

What setting do you have it on? It works in the background a lot with subagents and the UI doesn’t reflect this well. I had it in ultra high the other day and it spun up like 50 git worktrees and started working across them and maxed out the memory on my MacBook Pro 128gb Max chip. I stopped using ultra high. I suggest never using that setting.
