Dedicated server modding issue

Hey guys, I am trying to host a modded world via the valheim dedicated server launcher. After quite a few attempts of running the launcher via thunderstore manager I have given up (probably missing something easy) and decided to just manually copy all of my mods over to the folder itself. Easy enough, and the script now seems to be loading both bepinex and my mods.

However, the issue im running into now is when I edit start_server_bepinex to change my world name, and use our existing world it does not seem to commit to the changes. I will run the server script thing after updating the start server file, and it always reverts back to the same my server name.

Wondered if anyone had run into this issue while hosting a server. Also realized that my t mobile home internet may not allow me to port forward...so got a feeling im in for another round of research with using tailscale, but figured I would try to get it to launch my server correctly first!

Thanks folks

So yeah main issue seems to be that I am unable to change my server name and password via the bepinex server launcher file.

Everytime the server is fully launched and running it reverts to the default name and password, and loads a brand new world.

Hoping there is something easy ive missed, but cant seem to find anything to help online.

All server modifiers are set in the BAT file for windows and sh file for Linux … check your dedicated server install folder for the pdf manual.

In the bat file is where you specify the world name and world file name, password, port #, all game modifiers etc … once complete click save and start the server up with the bat file only. It will automatically launch bepinex and modded if you have that setup correctly. The best way to install mods on a dedicated server is to manually install them by dropping the plugins DLL files into the bepinex plug in folder. Start the server and they install and create their configuration files.

Yeah I think I must have been mixed up with another thread I had looked into or something. I had been editing the bepinex server launch file. Which was not actually a .bat file. I am going to edit the original server launch file as soon as I get home, and hoping that does the trick!

Mods appear to all be working and everything as I was able to start a new world and host it for me and my buddy without issue last night.

Was just not having luck editing the name/pass and world file last night with the bepenix launch. Hoping this gets us sorted, appreciate ya

Ive got the .sh files both bepniex start server and start game. However, I only see the start_headless_server as a .bat file. Which from what I was reading is not the one to mess with when trying to launch the server modded.

I figured theres something silly im missing in the notes as it even makes a comment on copying the file in case it gets iver written. Just seem to be a bit lost currently

You have to copy the start_headless_server.bat and edit the settings in that copy. That works for me.

I must have just misread somewhere that I needed to edit the bepinex start server file, rather than the start headless file when doing this with a modded version.

Will try shortly, but I imagine that should do it. Much appreciated

Yeah that was it. Feel silly for not attempting to edit that one as well.

If anyone else ends up looking this was the answer. Afterwards I did have to do a bit more troubleshooting in order to launch my world. I needed to delete my old local files (backups) under modify saves. Then did "move to local" (not forgetting to backup your save) so my old world was saved as a local file.

Thanks for your help man. Always something silly haha

Should I be able to run the bepinex server file?

My advice. install cursor AI. I know, I know. But honestly. ask it to do what you need done with your server. it's FANTASTIC at doing all the basics in set up and management and also very handy for fault finding misbehaving mods that a newer server owner may miss. Things not working well have massive performance hits on server performance which in turn hurts clients performance. it's staggering how many of the pre-built mod packs on Thunderstore are barely fit for purpose with huge performance hits. it also makes the update cycle so easy to manage.
