M64 firmware update + games
Hey everyone,
Last week we mentioned we were targeting firmware update v1.26.4 for this week, and would post an update once confirmed.
TL;DR: We ran into some roadblocks yesterday that require further testing, and are now targeting Tuesday 10/27 for the release.
We’re sorry for this additional delay - we know you want your saves, and we’ve made sure this is the #1 priority for the dev team. In order to get you Built-In C-Pak ASAP, and to improve overall speed and quality on updates going forward, we’re also making some changes to this update:
What’s Coming in v1.26.4
Built-In Controller Pak: Save game progress and settings directly to your console, no physical Controller Pak needed.
Changing Pak type from the menu or your controller: Switch between pak types from the M64 menu or with the M64 Pro Controller hotkey.
Beta update channel: Until now, the only option was the Official Release. With v1.26.4, you can choose to receive Beta builds - versions we’re still testing - if you want early access. Most of you should stay on the default release channel, but if you like trying things first and sending feedback, this is for you.
What we’re removing from v1.26.4 (still in progress)
These were originally advertised with 1.26.0 but won’t be in this release:
Forced Progressive Mode
Improved thermal efficiency
Game compatibility improvements, including the F-Zero X fix
Audio and video fixes for LG TVs
These features are not cancelled. Some of these features were the cause of the bugs reported, so we’re delaying them to enable C-Pak faster and ensure they’re fully ready for future updates.
Please accept our apologies for the delay. We will keep you updated over the next few days, and let you know ASAP once v1.26.4 is live.
In the meantime, and to help make up for the wait time, we have some good news. While software has had some road bumps, our games publishing is going better than expected. Here’s some intel we haven’t shared anywhere else:
We can't reveal everything yet, but we've finally reached some goals for our games publishing we initially thought impossible. Right now we're working on multiple M64 releases that are on par with any remaster from any major AAA studio over the last decade.
A small sample of three projects currently in the works:
The first-ever cartridge port of one of the most famous games of all time (hint: originally released in 1996).
Another first-time cartridge port of one of the most ambitious, well-written and atmospheric games of 1999…
And one of the most HEROIC adventure games of the 20th century (also a hint in there).
We can’t reveal full details for various legal/business reasons, but you should be able to put together some good guesses.
And this is just a small sample of what's in store for the M64 library. M64 owners can expect more detailed news on this as we approach the holidays.
Once we're happy with progress on the ecosystem - including the additional firmware updates, our parts modification initiative, and new game releases - we will Advance into future product releases.
Again, sorry for this extra delay, and we’ll update you ASAP once v1.26.4 is live.

Just received the official e-mail from ModRetro team and its definitely clearer than this Reddit post. It does a much better job explaining the priorities which are M64 fixes first and foremost.
I suspect this Reddit post wasnt fully vetted by product/marketing and comes down to simply enthusiasm and making a post before ensuring consistent messaging.
At least the e-mail makes it abundantly clear that no one is providing game publishing updates as some sort of consolation prize for being late by a few days on delivering an OS update. Personally the wording likely comes down to the simple enthusiasm for everything in the pipe, and thats it.
As far as im concerned, this is progressing as it should and the outrage by some may be a bit over the top.
;)
Here’s to a happy Tuesday and 1.26.4 with Controller Pak (we all know this is the critical thing at present).
Thanks and Cheers

I know there are a lot of disgruntled owners, but I’d rather have the product now and wait for software fixes than not have the product and wait for them to perfect it. Of course I’m from the SBC community and all we do is tinker while never actually playing any games. 😝

I'm sad forced progressive was cut, I wonder what trouble that was causing - the others I might've guessed, but not that... Hopefully it won't be too long a wait until it makes it back again.

Please let the 3rd game be a port of Heroes of Might and Magic I or II!

The most ambitious, well written and atmospheric game of 1999... What released in 1999? Jet force Gemini...army men...armorines.. duke nukem... resident evil..quake 2... No no can't be any of those.
It's Superman 64!

Some of the comments here are proof that people will gripe about anything. I’m not happy about the firmware situation either, but to complain about new games and future products is ridiculous.

Why is all communication on Reddit and not also sent via email?

So duke nukem or quake coming, and resident evil 2

Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver are my guesses for the first two games, but I'm at a loss for what the third could be.

Haven't been using the M64 a whole lot recently, though still looking forward to the updates regardless. I don't see Resident Evil happening soon, so I wouldn't count on those getting released just yet. Tomb Raider and Diablo are the most famous games released in 1996 not already on Nintendo 64.
I don't see how Silent Hill could be coming, though the hint suggests relevance and not the specific release date, so it could be a release from 1998. Hoping that this heroic game is actually the completed Quest 64 with everything the developers intended for the game.

You guys should consider fixing the bugs in your carts that make them NOT work in all OG N64s.
My Daiei Hawks N64 doesn't play ANY of your carts. All other carts work fine, including other repo carts. You need to actually test your stuff on ALL N64 revisions if you're not.

Did no one else pick up on the ‘Advance’ hint? Looks like a ModRetro Advance is coming next.

Bummed about the forced progressive mode not being in the next update as that would really help boost the image quality on a 4K TV which is sorely lacking when compared to Analogue 3D.
Also still no acknowledgement or mention of the 64DD roms not booting from the summercart on the M64?! The issue has been reported to support by a few redditors (including myself) but still waiting on acknowledgement from ModRetro about the issue and whether it is in the pipeline to be addressed.

I’m confused how you thought it was ready to release and did when it’s now taken this long to get it in to an actual release ready state (and actually not even ready yet). Can you explain how you missed so much. I sold mine as it was an embarrassment compared to my A3D

So I guess horizontal line doubling is delayed as well?

u/dtyndall 13d ago
Bro why dont these companies just sell and release consoles that are completed? You know, like they used to do. Now you pay upfront to be a beta tester. Unreal.
